What is a Virtual Viewing Party?

A virtual viewing party is a shared viewing experience of a brand-new Discovery Education video, Celebrate with DE: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, looking at the life of Martin Luther King jr. and why we remember him each January. The video will explore who Martin Luther King Jr. was, the civil rights movement and major events he was involved in, and his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee.

Thousands of classrooms will simultaneously access this video and share their thoughts and reflections around Dr. King, the importance of his belief in peaceful protest, and his legacy, then and now. If this is your first virtual viewing party read our FAQs for additional information.

The content and activities are suitable for all grades but we recommend you preview the video to determine if it is appropriate for your students.

How to Watch



We recommend you download the video, Celebrate with DE: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, in advance of your viewing party for the most seamless viewing experience.

Your class can watch the video any time and join the discussion independently. If you are participating on-demand, you may want to have students review the Martin Luther King Jr. Padlet or Twitter discussion to compare ideas and make connections. You can also use the suggested resources below to support your discussions.

Suggested Viewing Activities


To make the most of the virtual viewing party with your class, we suggest the following activities.


Before the Viewing Party

Invite your students to study and talk about the beliefs, actions, and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Discovery Education has a wealth of resources about this civil rights activist, including text, video, images, lesson materials, and more. Lead your students in at least one formal discussion about Dr. King’s work and legacy prior to the viewing party. Encourage them to consider his work critically: Why was he an effective leader? How did he build a following? Why were his speeches, especially “I Have a Dream,” so powerful? How do your students feel about nonviolent protest techniques?

During the Viewing Party
Students will have a lot to process during the virtual viewing party. Help them digest the information and form their own thinking by using the strategy Get Your Thinking Hat On from our Spotlight on Strategies series. This strategy provides students with a specific type of “thinking hat,” or thinking style, from which to consider information and ideas. Hats include feelings hat, information hat, benefits hat, judgment hat, and more.

After the Viewing Party
Immediately following the viewing party, use the images above or select your own and have students engage in the SOS Multiple Perspectives. This strategy requires students to engage deeply with an image as they assume a perspective other than their own and student will be well prepared to do this after the virtual viewing party.

Finally, have students identify an issue they care about. For younger students, this issue may be a personal or local issue; for older students, this issue may be personal but may also be of global concern. The issue need not be political or controversial. Have your students consider how they could take nonviolent, persuasive action, such as writing, creating art, speaking, or building. Offer to share your students’ thinking via your personal, class, or school Twitter account. Don’t forget to share it all with us on Padlet and Twitter @DiscoveryEd using #CelebratewithDE.
