Discovery Education Honored With Two 2011 BESSIE Awards
--Digital Curriculum Solution and Science Digital Textbook Recognized for Outstanding Content--
Silver Spring, Md. (April 20, 2011) – Discovery Education has been honored with two 2011 BESSIE Awards for Discovery Education streaming Plus and Discovery Education Science Techbook. For the past 17 years, the Best Educational Software (BESSIE) Awards have been presented by ComputED Learning Center, targeting content-rich programs and websites that provide teachers with technology to foster educational excellence.
Named Best Digital Library Website for the second consecutive year, Discovery Education streaming Plus features a collection of more than 150,000 digital learning objects, including videos, interactives, images, and articles, that integrate seamlessly into any curriculum. Aligned to state and national standards, including Common Core, and searchable by keyword, content area and grade level, the rich media from Discovery Education engages today’s students in learning.
“The video quality and content of Discovery Education streaming Plus is always impressive. The website offers more than 10,000 full-length videos divided into nearly 75,000 content-specific video segments, some of which include actual footage of real life events and occurrences,” said a BESSIE Award judge. “Robust search tools and dynamic browsing capability enable the user to quickly locate media and refine search results by subject, grade, media type, and more.”
Discovery Education Science Techbook won a BESSIE for Best Science Website. Four textbook adoption states, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, and Oregon, have approved Discovery Education’s digital science service as a core instructional resource for elementary science instruction. Organized around an inquiry-based framework, the Techbook covers the physical, earth and space, and life sciences, encourages student exploration, and stimulates critical thinking and deepens students’ understanding of science. The Techbook also includes full days of custom, in-person professional development that build educators’ capacity to leverage the power of digital content to engage students.
“As schools and districts across the country transition from traditional textbooks to a digital curriculum, this recognition validates and confirms the success that so many educators are experiencing with Discovery Education’s services,” said Kelli Campbell, senior vice president of content and Product Development for Discovery Education. “ We are honored to receive two consecutive awards from ComputEd Learning Center demonstrating that the education technology community recognizes Discovery Education’s digital curriculum offerings as valuable and effective solutions.”
The winners for this year’s BESSIE Awards were selected from titles submitted by software publishers around the world. Products were chosen based on academic content, potential for broad classroom use, technical merit, subject approach, and management system.
