DISCOVERY EDUCATION PRESENTS REED TIMMER AS THE FEATURED SPEAKER OF ASCD 2012

– Extreme weather enthusiast from Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers, Timmer will share stories from his career and discuss the importance of STEM education for the next generation of leaders –

Silver Spring, Md. (March 19, 2012) – Discovery Education is proud to present Reed Timmer as the keynote speaker of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) 2012 conference. Timmer, chief meteorologist for Discovery Education and extreme weather enthusiast from Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers, will address conference attendees beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 24. He will share his experience chasing some of the most powerful storms on record and discuss how he works with Discovery Education to ignite the curiosity of students across the country and get them excited about STEM education and careers.

ASCD will take place March 24-26, 2012 at the Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pa. In addition to Timmer’s keynote, education experts from Discovery Education will also conduct a number of interactive workshops during the conference. In various sessions throughout the weekend, they will share strategies and techniques to leverage digital media and technology in the classroom to engage students, support teachers and positively impact student achievement.

Workshops featuring Discovery Education experts include:

  • “They’re Coming from the Cloud and They’re Here to Help” presented by Hall Davidson from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, in the Terrace Ballroom 2. Davidson, a renowned education expert, will discuss what digital ‘techbooks’ really mean and share the digital tools that make tablets magical. Davidson, who began his career as a teacher and co-authored TechWorks, an internationally distributed classroom technology kit, is an international keynote speaker who travels the world addressing educators about the importance of digital technology in the classroom.
  • “The Power of Glass Schools” presented by Steve Dembo from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, March 26, in the Terrace Ballroom 1. Dembo will share how school and district leaders are utilizing Web 2.0 technologies to make learning transparent, create a strong sense of community and provide students the opportunity to collaborate with others globally. A former teacher and school director of technology, Dembo is an expert on the capabilities of social networking, the power of educational technologies and Web 2.0 tools, and the ability of digital content to empower teachers to improve student achievement.
  • “The Digital Classroom: What Does it Look Like?” presented by Brad Fountain from 2:15 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, in Discovery Education’s corporate room (203B). Fountain will share strategies for successfully implementing digital technology in any classroom, and will showcase Discovery Education’s digital textbook series. Fountain began his career as an elementary teacher and technology facilitator. He provides leadership training for school system administrators and professional development on technology integration.
