FULTON COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO PARTNER WITH SCIENCE CHANNEL AND DISCOVERY EDUCATION ON NEW STEM INITIATIVE

- New Collaboration Igniting Student Interest in STEM to Feature Comprehensive Professional Development for Educators, Engaging STEM Community Night, and Math Resources -

SILVER SPRING, Md. (May 14, 2015)Science Channel, the network that dares to question everything, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced they will partner with the teachers and students of Fulton County Schools’ Feldwood Elementary School in College Park, Ga. on a new STEM education initiative.

Through this new collaboration, made possible by Science Channel and Discovery Education in partnership with The Planetary Society, Girls Inc., and Maker Ed, Feldwood Elementary will launch a unique Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education initiative. This program is part of the recently launched Support Our Science (S.O.S.) program, which seeks to ignite students’ curiosity while providing educators with the means to build skills and knowledge in STEM.

This new learning initiative is designed by Discovery Education’s team of curriculum experts to meet the specific learning goals of Feldwood Elementary educators and students and includes:

  • A celebratory kick-off event for Feldwood Elementary School’s students and faculty launching this new collaboration and including an interactive demonstration and Q&A with Science Channel’s Hakeem Oluseyi from OUTRAGEOUS ACTS OF SCIENCE;
  • Robust professional development for all Feldwood Elementary School teachers from Discovery Education’s expert team supporting the effective integration of digital STEM resources into classroom instruction;
  • An engaging community night for area students, families, and community members highlighting the real-world applications of STEM lessons and showcasing the dynamic, inquiry-based, STEM learning environments that prepare students to succeed beyond the classroom; and
  • Math & Geometry sets including dynamic manipulatives that allow students to build, investigate and explore geometry concepts, vocabulary, and structures in a 2-D and 3-D world.

In addition to providing Feldwood Elementary and another deserving school in Houston, Texas with a customized STEM education initiative, the S.O.S. program includes a nationwide sweepstakes offering one lucky elementary or middle school a $10,000 grant to apply to its own STEM efforts, as well as an interactive STEM-themed assembly. Now through May 31, parents, teachers, and community members can enter a school of their choice and learn more about S.O.S. by visiting www.supportourscience.com.

“Thank you Science Channel and Discovery Education for developing this multi-faceted, customized initiative enhancing STEM instruction for our educators and students,” said Dr. Scott Muri, Deputy Superintendent of Academics at Fulton County Schools.  “We look forward to partnering with Discovery Education’s expert team to both grow our teachers’ instructional practice and ignite our students’ passion for STEM education.”
