Epicenter

Definition
The location on Earth's surface that is directly above an earthquake's focus

Key Context
When tectonic plates shift suddenly, the movement can cause an earthquake deep in the crust. The point where this earthquake originates is the focus. The point on Earth's surface located directly above the focus is the epicenter and is usually the area most strongly affected by the earthquake.
