Home> Vocabulary - Greenhouse Gas

Greenhouse Gas

Definition
A gas, usually carbon-based, that contributes to global warming through the greenhouse effect, which prevents the escape of radiant heat from Earth's atmosphere

Key Context
Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane trap heat in Earth's atmosphere through the greenhouse effect. Many human activities add greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, particularly the burning of fossil fuels. The more of these gases exist in the atmosphere, the more heat is trapped. This contributes to global warming.
