Definition
Solid material, moved by wind and water, that settles on the surface of land or the bottom of a body of water
 
Key Context
Look at a stream after a long rain. The water is muddy. The rain has washed soil into the stream making the water murky. The soil floating in the current is called sediment. In time it will settle to the bottom of the stream.
