Tectonic Plates

Definition
One of several huge pieces of Earth's crust

Key Context
The pieces of a puzzle fit together to form a picture. Like the pieces of a puzzle, the earth’s surface is made of large sections that fit together called tectonic plates. These plates float on the hot middle layer of the earth called the mantle. Tectonic plates are always pushing together or pulling away from each other. Earthquakes or volcanic eruptions often happen at the places where the plates meet.
