Explore Discovery Education’s extensive library of rich and engaging media and learn how Discovery Education Streaming Plus can help transform instruction and facilitate the transition to the Common Core. Participants learn how Discovery Education Streaming Plus supports multiple learning modalities with content that is easy to integrate and aligned to standards. A Discovery Education Specialist demonstrates site navigation throughout this training while providing integration ideas and discussing instructional strategies. Exemplar Common Core lessons are discussed and explored for easy use and adaptation for the classroom, and participants have the opportunity to experience a model lesson.
Centers-Based Teaching and Learning
|Experience the future now! Participants are immersed in a Discovery Education Streaming Plus teaching and learning experience. Using a centers-based instructional approach, participants experience a model lesson firsthand, moving through a variety of stations designed to build student content knowledge, collaboration and communication skills, and problem solving ability. Directions, management, resources, and planning techniques for centers are shared. With the support of planning materials and a Discovery Education Specialist, educators create their own centers-based lesson appropriate for a one-to-one or one-to-many computer environment.|
Taking a Bite Out of ELA Common Core Using Discovery Education Streaming Plus
Embrace and implement the Common Core standards for ELA. Standards provide a framework for a common understanding of curricular expectations for students to ensure that everyone is working toward the same learning and performance goals. This workshop uses model lessons embedded with digital media and aligned to the CCSS to help teachers implement the Common Core ELA Standards. Participants explore the depth and breadth of Discovery Education’s rich media and learn how to plan, implement, and assess curricular units of study based on the Common Core standards. This course is offered for elementary and secondary subject specific groups, including Science, ELA, and Social Studies.
Taking a Bite Out of Math Common Core Using Discovery Education Streaming Plus
Embrace and implement the Common Core standards for Math. This workshop uses model lessons embedded with digital media aligned to the math standards to help teachers implement the Common Core. Participants explore the depth and breadth of Discovery Education’s rich media and learn how to plan, implement, and assess curricular units of study based on the Common Core standards. This course is offered for elementary and secondary mathematics.
iRead, iWrite, iThink (K-2)
Enhance effective fluency instruction in K-2 classrooms and extend the connection between reading, writing, and thinking in early elementary classrooms to support student learning. Participants discuss three proven fluency strategies and discover ways to enhance them through the use of technology and Discovery Education Streaming Plus resources. Participants engage in hands-on exploration of newly introduced tools and strategies and incorporate ideas into lessons that can be implemented immediately with students. Emphasis is placed on using media with targeted Web 2.0 tools and applications to increase student engagement and achievement in the area of fluency.
Discovery Education Classroom Demonstrations
See a Discovery Education lesson in action in an authentic classroom environment. A Classroom Demonstration brings a Discovery Education Specialist into the classroom to deliver a short, media-enriched presentation to students while the teacher observes. The demonstration lesson combines research-based instructional practices with a Discovery Education service (such as Streaming or Science Techbook™) to engage students with grade- and subject- specific content. Afterward, the teacher and Discovery Education Specialist discuss their observations, debrief the experience, and develop plans for future lesson design and delivery with students.
Launching Student Access
Maximize the use of the Discovery Education Student Center, an active, engaging learning environment currently available to students. During this session, a Discovery Education Specialist works in a lab setting with participating teachers and their students for one class period to increase access to the Discovery Education Student Center. Teachers and students learn to navigate Student Center and make the most of corresponding digital content to boost student engagement and build understanding. Students learn multiple ways to access content, store digital assets, and complete a digital activity assigned through the Discovery Education Student Center.
Instructional Support Using Discovery Education
Discover how Discovery Education Instructional Support can provide just-in-time, job-embedded support for teachers. Participants work directly with a Discovery Education Specialist to apply the knowledge and skills they learned during whole group learning sessions in their classrooms. Discovery Education Instructional Support is a natural follow up to full-day, in-person learning sessions and is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice and reduce implementation barriers. Discovery Education Instructional Support can be customized to meet the goals and needs of the teacher or students. A Discovery Education Specialist can support four to five educators per day. For maximum results, educators should participate in a minimum of three follow-up sessions over a six-month cycle.
