On that day, terrorists from the fundamentalist group Al-Qaeda hijacked American airliners and used them as weapons to attack American landmarks, including the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. An additional airliner bound for Washington, D.C. crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers confronted the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including more than 400 first responders.
