–Ontario School District leads state in adoption of digital science ‘techbook’ from Discovery Education–

Silver Spring, Md. (Sept. 14, 2010) – Leading the state in embracing digital content to meet the learning needs of 21st century students, Ontario School District in Oregon has adopted Discovery Education Science K-5/6 , the dynamic digital science “techbook” from Discovery Education. Ontario School District will use the Discovery Education solution as their core instructional resource for 4th and 5th grade science curricula.

The first digital, basal instructional solutions to be approved for statewide use in Oregon as part of its K-12 Science and 9-12 Mathematics Instructional Materials Evaluation Process, Discovery Education Science K-5/6 and Discovery Education Science 6-8 are correlated to Oregon Science Curriculum Standards. Organized around an inquiry-based framework, both techbooks cover the physical, earth and space, and life sciences, encourage student exploration, and stimulate critical thinking and deepen students’ understanding of science.

“Within Discovery Education Science K-5/6 , videos, reading passages, engaging hands-on virtual labs, and more come together to bring the world of science alive for every type of learner,” Linda Florence, superintendent of Ontario School District said. “The Discovery Education Science techbook helps district educators address every type of learning modality and engages students in the digital world in which they live. Discovery Education’s unique digital service represents the future of science education.”

The district’s forward-thinking decision to implement online curriculum follows the creation of five technology-rich learning environments at Ontario Middle School in January 2010 through a $274,000 technology grant.

Featuring up-to-date, standards-based videos, virtual labs, simulations, ebooks, text passages, and more, Discovery Education Science solutions offer digital content in multiple modalities. Each Ontario School District student will be able to access the service with a unique username and password, so that educators can differentiate instruction to meet the many learning styles of their students through engaging video, colorful text passages and interactive explorations. DVDs, printable worksheets, activities and hands-on suggestions facilitate use of the service outside the classroom or where Internet access is unavailable.

The formative assessment tool built into the digital instructional materials provides educators and students with information on which skills and concepts have been mastered, and directs individual students to remedial activities that address areas in need of improvement. Educators can quickly identify student understanding of science concepts throughout the learning process via a pre-test, mid-point check and post-test.

In addition to high-quality digital assets and a powerful assessment tool, the Discovery Education digital instructional materials feature comprehensive professional development resources and printed teacher’s guides. These elements showcase best practices and highlight new techniques for integrating digital content into classroom instruction, making it easier for teachers to plan, teach and improve student academic achievement.

“We are sensing a shift in school districts across the state as superintendents and other administrators begin to consider the tremendous upside and benefits digital content offers as a core instructional resource,” said Alex Morrison, vice president, Discovery Education. “Discovery Education is proud to be working with Ontario School District on our joint mission to improve student academic achievement, and we a confident it is leading the country in the right direction.”

In addition to Oregon, Discovery Education is pursuing adoptions of the Discovery Education Science techbook in Florida, Louisiana and Indiana.

–Mix of professional development and curriculum alignment services grows traction of digital content as core instructional tool–

Silver Spring, Md. (Sept. 9, 2010) – Building on their successful implementation of digital content services and growing the role of digital resources as a core instructional tool, administrators and educators in Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula Borough School District are continuing their efforts to integrate digital media into curriculum with professional development and curriculum alignment services from Discovery Education .

In August 2009, district administrators rolled out Discovery Education streaming Plus , as well as Discovery Education Science and Discovery Education Health to educators across the 44 school system as part of an ongoing effort to engage 21 st Century students in learning. This digital content, locally hosted on a Discovery Media Server within the district firewall, immediately became an integral resource used by both teachers and students district-wide. In addition to dynamic digital resources, the district also purchased a subscription to Discovery Education’s MediaShare in an effort to facilitate teacher collaboration.

A central component of the initial roll-out of Discovery Education’s digital content included 15 days of professional development. These immersive trainings, designed in consultation with Kenai administrators and led by Discovery Education’s professional development staff, provided participating educators the basics of using digital media with existing educational technologies and quickly built the skills necessary to integrate digital content into classroom activities.

“Our school system’s mission is to provide stimulating, integrated learning opportunities that develop creative, productive learners who demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to meet life’s challenges,” said Dr. Steve Atwater, superintendent of schools. “Our initial implementation of Discovery Education’s digital services was so successful in helping us meet that goal that we wanted to continue to improve our proficiency in using this resource and integrate it even further into instruction.”

Kenai Peninsula Borough School District recently renewed their partnership with Discovery Education, ensuring teachers and students district-wide continued access to Discovery Education streaming Plus, Discovery Education Science and Discovery Education Health. In addition, the district has increased its commitment to professional development, purchasing more than 130 additional professional development days over the next three years. These professional development days are designed to help educators leverage educational technologies and digital content to support several district initiatives including teaching elementary science with an emphasis on literacy, integrating STEM into middle school curriculum, and integrating English language arts lessons into current middle and high school social studies lessons.

“Our classrooms are dynamic environments that seek to engage every student, no matter their learning modality,” said Sean Dusek, assistant superintendent of instruction. “Our district is committed to empowering educators not only with flexible digital content that engages all types of students, but with the latest strategies and techniques to help us meet the goals of our science and literacy programs.”

In addition to professional development services, Discovery Education’s curriculum alignment team also will analyze district curriculum documents related to key learning initiatives to determine the best digital assets, including video chapters, images, articles, audio, writing prompts, games, and interactives for each district standard. Once the content has been matched to the appropriate standard, those assets will be embedded directly into the district’s curricular documents. By aligning digital assets from Discovery Education to Kenai’s curriculum at a granular level, district educators are further empowered to engage students with different learning styles and interests through many types of digital media.

“Discovery Education and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District share a joint mission to help every student live up to their fullest academic potential,” said Betsy Drennan, director, Discovery Education. “Their talented corps of educators and administrators is dedicated to improving student engagement through the integration of the latest educational technologies and digital content into instruction, and we look forward to supporting them in this endeavor.”

In addition to providing digital content, professional development and curriculum alignment services, Discovery Education will continue to build capacity and to support educators in Kenai through one of the nation’s largest professional learning communities, the Discovery Educator Network (DEN). Through the DEN, educators have access to a wide range of technology training as well as a resource library of teacher-generated projects and tools.

    — Nation’s Premier Sustainability Challenge Opens to High School Students for First Time —

    — Over $100,000 in Grants and Prizes for Students and Mentors; Registration Open at www.wecanchange.com —

ISELIN, N.J., Sept. 8, 2010— The Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) today announced the kick-off of the third annual Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge , a program that educates, empowers and engages students and teachers nationwide to become “Agents of Change” in identifying and solving environmental problems. The third year of this national sustainability challenge—now expanded to include high school students—encourages all students, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, to team up with their classmates to create replicable solutions to environmental issues in their schools (grades K-5), community (grades 6-8) and world (grades 9-12).

After expanding last year to elementary school students, this year’s Challenge is turning to the nation’s high school students to identify and address environmental issues that they see as problems in the world. In keeping with the Challenge’s overall mission to build a more sustainable world, high school students will be specifically encouraged to focus on energy-related issues using scientific investigation, and create a replicable solution using web-based curriculum tools powered by Discovery Education.

“The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge inspires our nation`s students to become stewards of our planet through scientific exploration,” said Siemens Foundation President Jeniffer Harper-Taylor. “We have been incredibly impressed by the scope and impact of the projects completed over the past two years and are looking forward to even more extraordinary solutions this year as we open the Challenge to high school students.”

Over 13,000 students competed in the 2010 Challenge across elementary and middle school grades. Projects ranged from reducing lunchtime waste to saving local trees and encouraging eco-friendly gardens. The grand prize team, “No1Idling” from Novi, MI, focused on reducing community pollution by raising awareness about the environmental impact of vehicle idling among area drivers.

Teachers, students and mentors can log on to www.wecanchange.com now to register for the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge . Student and teacher/mentor prizes, which vary according to grade level, include savings bonds, school grants, exciting trips and much more. Fostering learning, team work and problem solving around sustainability, the website offers robust resource guides, lesson plans and teacher materials to accompany each stage of the challenge. These materials are created by Discovery Education, the division of Discovery Communications providing scientifically proven, standards-based digital content and resources to classrooms nationwide, and the NSTA, the largest science teacher organization in the world dedicated to improving science education and increasing student learning by engaging all teachers of science. A panel of environmental experts, science educators and the College Board (high school) will judge teams on both their ability to create a positive, measurable solution to a local sustainability issue or challenge using scientific methodology and their ability to explain how the solution can be replicated by other communities.

The deadline for all entries is March 15, 2011. Finalists and winners will be announced in April 2011 and the national winners will be announced in May 2011. For more information, visit www.wecanchange.com or www.facebook.com/wecanchange .
