–Grand Prize Winner Awarded Trip to Yellowstone from Take Me Fishing™ and Discovery Education–

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (March 30, 2011) The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation’s (RBFF) Take Me Fishing™ campaign and Discovery Education have announced five first prize recipients and one grand prize winner of their recent ‘Explore the Blue’ essay contest.

In September 2010, Take Me Fishing™ and Discovery Education set out to educate students about the importance of outdoor recreational activities, such as boating and fishing, and the value of clean and healthy natural resources through a new web site called ExploretheBlue.com. In support of this goal, the groups launched an essay contest, sponsored by The Sports Authority, and asked young people to describe their favorite boating or fishing memory in words.

Barnsdall, OK fifth grader James Cole’s essay “Our Special Pond” was chosen from hundreds of entries as the grand prize winner. At the end of his essay, James imparted a key lesson learned: “I want to take care of my ponds, lakes, and rivers, so one day when I grow up I can enjoy fishing with my kids.” As the grand prize winner, he and his family have been awarded a trip to Yellowstone National Park including airfare, lodging, $650 in spending money for fun on-the-water activities and a $250 Sports Authority gift card. Fifth graders Colton Whitaker and Tommy Leadbeater, third grader Lillian Knetl, second grader Jackson Wall and first grader Aidan Conner-Harris were each awarded first place prizes of $100 Sports Authority gift cards.

“We are thrilled to be able to reward these inspired youth for their passion and talent,” said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “The enthusiasm we saw amongst these essay submissions was extremely uplifting. We hope to continue to instill the emotional and social values that boating and fishing bring to the younger generations and we’re happy to see that the appreciation is apparent.”

The contest began on September 16, 2010 and entries were accepted through January 31, 2011. Students enrolled in kindergarten through 5th grade were eligible to enter by composing a short essay of 350 words or less describing an outdoor fishing or boating experience and touching upon the importance of protecting and conserving our nation’s waterways.

“We were extremely impressed with the quality of the entries,” said Discovery Education Vice President of Education Partnerships Mary Rollins. “It’s apparent that these children are very excited about the great outdoors and their parents and schools are doing an excellent job at conveying the importance of conservation. We hope this contest only enhanced their interest in boating, fishing and protecting their environment.”

Though the contest is complete, those interested in learning more can still visit ExploretheBlue.com or TakeMeFishing.org to search thousands of places to boat and fish, find local services, activities and events, or learn more about the aquatic plants and animals in your area. If the weather isn’t cooperating for outdoor activities, parents and children can also take a virtual underwater field trip, keep an online boating journal and play a variety of exciting games. For more information on Explore the Blue and other conservation or outdoor activity tips and tricks, visit Take Me Fishing’s Facebook page or follow us on twitter @Take_Me_Fishing.

–Florida district combines digital content, professional development, assessments, and curriculum alignment from Discovery Education to create digital learning environments–

Silver Spring, Md. (March 23, 2011) – Building on the successful implementation of digital resources and assessment services, Florida’s Santa Rosa County School District is deepening its partnership with Discovery Education to further integrate digital content into the curriculum. To achieve this goal, the district is working with Discovery Education to augment their robust use of Discovery Education’s digital content and assessment services with customized professional development and curriculum alignment services.

Over the past five years, Santa Rosa County School District and Discovery Education have successfully partnered to provide educators with the digital resources and assessment services they need to engage students in learning and drive academic achievement. Discovery Education is the leading provider of high-quality curriculum-based digital content and professional development resources. Available in more than half of U.S. schools, Discovery Education’s services support educators nationwide as they transition to using dynamic digital media as their core instructional resource.

“All children deserve an education that will prepare them for the 21st century, and to become productive members of our community,” said Tim Wyrosdick, superintendent of Santa Rosa County School District. “The new services Discovery Education is providing deepen an already comprehensive relationship. In addition to outstanding digital content, Discovery Education is equipping teachers with even more tools and resources and helping to evolve our curriculum to meet the changing needs of 21st century learners.”

At the foundation of the expanded relationship is digital content from Discovery Education streaming PLUS and Discovery Education Science. Aligned to Florida academic standards and assessments, Discovery Education streaming PLUS content is searchable by keyword, content area and grade level. Empowering educators to quickly locate and employ a variety of dynamic multimedia resources to engage students in science, Discovery Education Science propels the district’s science curriculum with standards-based virtual labs, simulations, video clips, and reading passages, and encourages student exploration and stimulates critical thinking. In addition, for three years the district has been employing Discovery Education Assessment services to monitor progress toward academic goals and inform instruction.

To further leverage these digital resources, Santa Rosa County School District is turning to Discovery Education for curriculum alignment services. During the next four years, Discovery Education will work with the district to embed digital content from Discovery Education streaming Plus and Discovery Education Science into curriculum guides for math, science, English-Language Arts, and the Common Core State Standards. By embedding Discovery Education content directly into curriculum guides, educators will be able to click and launch digital assets aligned to Florida’s standards as well as Common Core State Standards to differentiate instruction and engage students with different learning styles.

“By aligning digital content to their curriculum, Santa Rosa County School District is positioning itself as a leader in the creation of world-class digital learning environments for students,” said Coni Rechner, Discovery Education vice president. “District educators and administrators are dedicated to improving student engagement through the integration of the latest educational technology and digital content, and we look forward to supporting them in this endeavor.”

The professional development program will be jump-started with immersive sessions to provide participants with necessary technical skills to use the digital resources and corresponding technologies in their classroom instruction.

Follow-up professional development will support and mentor educators from Santa Rosa County School District as they continue to develop cross-curricular lessons that include digital content for use in large groups and differentiated instruction. Throughout the implementation, Discovery Education will provide consistent evaluation of the program, which will both shape the continued implementation of the program as well as the next steps for the district.

Discovery Education will continue to support educators from Santa Rosa County School District with one of the nation’s largest professional learning communities, the Discovery Educator Network (DEN). Through the DEN, educators have access to a wide range of technology training as well as a resource library of teacher-generated projects and tools.

Silver Spring, Md. (March 1, 2011) – Georgia’s DeKalbCounty School System (DCSS) is committed to improving the academicachievement of all students and leading the nationwide transition todigital curriculum. After implementing digital resources from Discovery Education, the district sought to make instructional time more effective throughdigital content curriculum alignment. In 2010, the DeKalb County SchoolSystem became the first district in Georgia to partner with DiscoveryEducation on cross-curricular alignment, which has led to improved studentachievement in science.

Over the past six years, the DeKalb County School System and DiscoveryEducation have partnered to improve student achievement, advanceprofessional development, and evolve curriculum to meet the needs of 21stCentury learners in a cost-effective way. Discovery Education is theleading provider of high-quality curriculum-based digital content andprofessional development resources. Available in more than half of U.S.schools, Discovery Education’s services support educators nationwide asthey transition to using dynamic digital media as their core instructionalresource.

The foundation of the partnership includes dynamic digital content fromDiscovery Education. In 2004, the school system began receiving Discovery Education streaming through astatewide partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting. Aligned to Georgiastate standards, Discovery Education streaming is searchable bykeyword, content area and grade level. “I strongly believe that DiscoveryEducation gives children the ability to experience the world in new ways,or through multimedia when direct experiences are not always possible,”said Kelli Harris-Wright, Director, Department for Elementary Teaching andLearning for DeKalb County School System.
