Silver Spring, Md. (Jan. 31, 2012) – Discovery Education named Tanya Van Court senior vice president of partner marketing, where she is charged with overseeing the development of consumer-facing programs and district-led initiatives to support educators in their transition to digital learning environments. With more than 15 years of experience in media, interactive technology and youth-based learning experiences, Van Court will lead the development and execution of marketing programs that optimize the power of media and the resources of Discovery to bring the world to classrooms nationwide.

“Tanya is a seasoned executive with an incredible record of developing innovative products and programs that deliver real results,” said Lori McFarling, chief marketing officer for Discovery Education, to whom Van Court will report. “Tanya’s passion and expertise will be tremendous assets to Discovery Education’s partners as we facilitate transformation with digital solutions that ignite students’ natural curiosity.”

In addition to Van Court`s marketing portfolio, she also will lead Discovery Education`s strategic partnerships with key educational foundations, accountable for guiding the development of innovative educational programs for the K-12 and higher education markets.

She joins Discovery Education from Nickelodeon, where she was senior vice president and general manager of NOGGIN, ParentsConnect and NickJr.com. In that position, she led Nickelodeon to become a key player in the parents’ online space and bolstered NOGGIN and NickJr.com`s positions as educational, interactive, resources that provide rich experiences for both children and parents.

Prior to Nickelodeon, Van Court served as vice president of new media products for ESPN, where she led the launch of ESPN 360. Van Court began her career in the telecommunications industry, spending several years with Covad Communications, where she was instrumental in the launch of DSL in several international markets.

Among her many industry achievements and affiliations, she is a graduate of the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications Executive Leadership Development Program and was named a 2005 Betsy Magness Fellow by Women in Cable Telecommunications. She also was named one of the top 50 most influential minorities in Cable World. Van Court holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in industrial engineering from Stanford University.

– North Myrtle Beach Primary School’s Diane Scher Named Winner in ‘Catch Me Being Curious’ National Sweepstakes –

Silver Spring, Md. and Santa Clara, Calif. (Jan. 30, 2012) – Discovery Education and Intel Corporation have named Diane Scher, a Technology Assistant at North Myrtle Beach Primary School, the winner of the ‘Catch Me Being Curious’ national sweepstakes. Chosen from nearly 80,000 entries from across the country, Scher won an all-expense paid family vacation to Yellowstone National Park.

“I am thrilled to have won the ‘Catch Me Being Curious’ sweepstakes and am honored that I get to embark on this amazing vacation to Yellowstone National Park with my family,” said Scher. “I can’t thank Discovery Education and Intel enough for this adventure. This will give my family the opportunity to discover new places and explore and embrace the world around us.”

Scher and her family will travel to Yellowstone National Park on an all-expense paid trip where they will explore hundreds of geysers and hot springs, observe wild animals, such as bears, wolves, elk and buffalo, and enjoy a variety of exhibits, films and Ranger-led programs. They will also make stops at Mt. Rushmore, Little Bighorn and the Grand Tetons.

Designed to help students understand the importance of their education and motivate them to make a difference, the webinar series will feature thought leaders on a variety of topics of importance to students and educators throughout the year.

To kick off the series, Discovery Education is hosting a webinar on Jan. 23 featuring General (Retired) and Mrs. Colin L. Powell of America’s Promise Alliance (America’s Promise). General and Mrs. Powell will speak to students about the high school dropout crisis, why it’s more important than ever to get a high school diploma and the important role students can play in helping their peers stay in school. Downey and McGrath will provide students a behind-the-scenes look at how one goes from candidate to elected official. With political campaigns in full swing across the U.S., Downey and McGrath will explain the elements of a political campaign and the election process. They will also discuss how Super Tuesday is an important milestone in choosing a presidential nominee.

    (Silver Spring, Md. and St. Paul, Minn.) – Discovery Education and 3M are proud to announce the opening of the 14th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge (http://www.youngscientistchallenge.com). The nation’s premier science competition for students in grades 5-8, the Challenge rewards middle school students for their science acumen, demonstration of innovation and curiosity, and communication skills. Through the Challenge, students have the opportunity to compete for $25,000 and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

    Encouraging students to share their passion for science, the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge asks students to create a one to two-minute video communicating the science behind a possible solution to an everyday problem related to one of the following categories:

  • The Way We Move
  • The Way We Keep Ourselves Healthy
  • The Way We Make a Difference

    Evaluated on their creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation, ten finalists will be selected to participate in an exclusive summer mentorship program working directly with a 3M scientist. The students will meet virtually with their mentor and will receive resources and support provided by 3M and Discovery Education. Each finalist also will receive a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn., to compete in the final challenge in October, 2012.

    All video entries must be submitted online at www.youngscientistchallenge.com no later than April 19, 2012. Videos will not be judged on production skills and may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital cameras.

    – Campaign Brings Innovative Technology into the Classroom with One-of-A-Kind “Win a Wireless Lab”–

    VERNON HILLS, Ill., and SILVER SPRING, Md. – January 5, 2012 Schools with a New Year’s resolution to increase the technology in their classrooms can turn to the 2012 Win a Wireless Lab Sweepstakes to meet their goal. Today, CDW Government LLC (CDW-G), a leading provider of technology solutions to education, government and healthcare customers, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of curriculum-based digital content services and professional development resources to more than half of all U.S. schools, announce the launch of the 10th-annual sweepstakes program.

    The 2012 Win a Wireless Lab Sweepstakes will award three grand prize 21st-century classroom technology packages, which include 20 tablet or notebook computers, an interactive whiteboard, student response system, printer, document camera and $5,000 Discovery Education digital media grant. CDW-G and Discovery Education will also provide on-site training at each winning school.

Through the Win a Wireless Lab website, entrants can submit 30-second videos and written essays that describe how their school is encouraging people to enter the sweepstakes and how they will use the technology. CDW-G and Discovery Education will post selected videos to the Win a Wireless Lab Facebook page, and entrants will be included in a special drawing for additional prizes.
