Today’s driving statistics are staggering:

  • 70% of all child car seats in the U.S. are improperly installed.
  • Vehicle crashes are the single greatest cause of death for teenagers.
  • A driver is 8 – 23 times more likely to crash if texting while driving.
  • Fatality rates per mile driven for 75-79 year olds are more than four times as high as those for 30-59 year olds.
  • Across the nation, hospitals, universities and corporations are partnering with one another to tackle these critical issues and decrease fatalities. From Toyota’s innovative “Buckle Up for Life” community outreach program with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital educating parents on proper car seat installation to new technology allowing parents to monitor and track their teen’s driving habits and MIT’s groundbreaking empathy suit designed to teach us all about the challenges faced by older drivers on the road, LIFE BEHIND THE WHEEL showcases a broad range of driver education and attempts to offer real solutions.

“At Toyota, safety is a priority in everything we do, we are focused on making sure drivers everywhere have the resources they need to keep their families, friends and loved ones safe and secure,” said Pat Pineda, Group Vice President, National Philanthropy, Toyota Motor North America, Inc. “Toyota’s partnership with Discovery Channel is significant and underscores our efforts to keep the roads safe for all.”

“We are proud to partner with Toyota for this important documentary. Safe driving is a life-long lesson. LIFE BEHIND THE WHEEL gives people of all ages critical information while highlighting important new strides in technology that are creating better drivers and saving lives along the way,” said John Whyte, MD, Chief Medical Expert for Discovery Channel.

LIFE BEHIND THE WHEEL is available for free download at www.discoverychannelpatiented.com or on iTunes. In addition, portions of the documentary will be available on ToyotaTeenDriver.com, a free, online program in partnership with Discovery Education designed to provide safety educational resources to schools, educators, parents and students.

LIFE BEHIND THE WHEEL is produced with support from Toyota.

    – Teachers and students are invited to create videos of standards-based songs for a chance to win prizes and a school assembly with renowned education expert Dr. Lodge McCammon –

Silver Spring, Md. (Feb. 24, 2012) – The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) has launched the DEN Dr. Lodge Video Challenge, a competition that invites classes across the country to select one of Dr. Lodge McCammon’s standards-based songs, learn the dance moves and film a music video. The purpose of the challenge is to connect concepts to music and movement to better engage students while they learn. The grand prize winner will receive a school assembly with Dr. Lodge McCammon (Dr. Lodge), a renowned education expert who writes songs and supporting materials, about science, math, language arts and social studies topics for K-12 classrooms.

“The Discovery Educator Network is proud to partner with Dr. Lodge McCammon to provide teachers an engaging and creative way to help students learn science, math, language arts and social studies concepts,” said Kyle Schutt, account manager for the DEN. “The challenge is designed to help teachers differentiate their instruction by incorporating technology while providing a fun and educational experience for students.”

To participate in the challenge, classes should visit the DEN Dr. Lodge Video Challenge website, https://www.discoveryeducation.com/DEN/drlodgevideochallenge.cfm. Classes should film their video using the simple, one-take technique (no transitions, digital effects or editing is permitted) and submit through the website by March 4, 2012. Sample music videos are available on the website.

A panel of judges will select the top 30 entries based on their content, organization and creativity. The entries will then appear on the DEN Dr. Lodge Video Challenge website, and the public will be invited to vote March 19-25 to determine the grand prize winner. Winners will be announced at the beginning of April.

The top 11 finalists will receive a Flipcam and 30 backpacks for students. The grand prize winner also will receive a school assembly during which Dr. Lodge will perform the winning song live while the class acts out their video. The performance will be streamed to classrooms across the country.

The DEN is a community of educators who are passionate about teaching with digital media, sharing resources, collaborating and networking. Through a variety of activities, such as the DEN Dr. Lodge Video Challenge, the DEN supports educators in leveraging digital media and technology in their classrooms to engage students in learning.

Dr. Lodge is a specialist in curriculum and contemporary media at The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, part of North Carolina State University’s College of Education. He developed a teaching and professional development process called FIZZ, which encourages teachers and students to use simple video creation techniques in the classroom to enhance standards-based lessons.
