New York, N.Y. – In keeping with its 27-year mission to support education and lifelong learning by igniting curiosity and delivering the thrill of discovery to people around the world, Discovery Communications today announced a number of new partnerships and commitments in support of United Nations, Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and Obama Administration education priorities through its Discovery Education division and the nonprofit Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership (DCGEP).

The new commitments, announced this week at separate events in New York City by Discovery Communications Founder and Chairman John Hendricks and Discovery Education CEO Bill Goodwyn, include:

  • A new $7.4 million commitment to extend DCGEP`s efforts to use the power of media to transform education and improve lives in the developing world, in support of the UN`s ‘Education First’ initiative and the Global Business Coalition for Education, of which Discovery is a founding member.
  • i.am.STEAM, a collaboration between artist and youth advocate will.i.am`s i.am.angel Foundation and Discovery Education to engage U.S. students in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) education as part of Discovery`s commitment as a member of CGI.
  • STEM POWER!, a new Discovery Education program dedicated to empowering girls in the U.S. with tools for succeeding in STEM-related fields, and `Discovery Girls,` a new DCGEP program in Africa dedicated to improving the education outcomes of marginalized girls, in support of the Equal Futures Partnership led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
  • Additionally, Hendricks joined UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon, former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and other leaders at UN General Assembly events on September 26 and 27 to address business` role in acting on global education priorities, and, on September 24, Goodwyn represented Discovery on a plenary panel at the CGI Annual Meeting to discuss Discovery`s overall commitment to improving global education through its Discovery Education division, the i.am.STEAM initiative with will.i.am and the i.m.angel foundation, and DCGEP.

“Empowering and supporting education has been part of Discovery`s DNA since the day we launched Discovery Channel on June 17, 1985, and the first call we received was from a teacher asking to use our content to ignite and inspire the curiosity of students in the classroom,” said Hendricks. “Discovery is proud to be partnering with the United Nations, the Clinton Global Initiative, and other members of the Global Business Coalition for Education to make a difference in the lives of young people around the world, both through Discovery Education and the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership.”

“When John Hendricks founded Discovery Communications he recognized the power and responsibility that private industry has in helping to drive education priorities around the world,” said Goodwyn. “Today we`re excited to continue building upon that legacy through Discovery Education`s partnership with the i.am.angel Foundation on a groundbreaking youth engagement initiative, i.am.STEAM.”

As part of today`s announcement, Discovery is committing an additional $7.4 million to the work of DCGEP, of which John Hendricks is chairman, to continue its successful innovations that have enabled the development of an award-winning library of educational programs specifically for communities in the developing world served by the project. The library, together with equipment and tailored teacher training, is provided to all DCGEP Learning Centers, which to date have engaged and impacted more than one million students. This effort is part of Discovery`s commitment in support of the UN`s `Education First` initiative and its role as a founding member of the Global Business Coalition for Education, which brings together corporate leaders committed to delivering on the promise of quality education for all of the world’s children.

i.am.STEAM is a five-year youth engagement initiative, implemented by Discovery Education on behalf of will.i.am`s i.am.angel Foundation, designed to bring STEAM education to life for millions both inside and outside the classroom. Launching this fall, i.am.STEAM will provide a portfolio of immersive learning experiences for under-resourced elementary and middle school students, including after-school enrichment programs, immersive summer camps and educator tools and resources. i.am.STEAM is part of Discovery`s commitment in support of CGI, on behalf of the i.am.angel Foundation.

Developed by Discovery Education, STEM POWER! is a program dedicated to tapping into girls` passions, interests, and capabilities, and empowering them with the tools that will enable them to succeed in STEM-related fields. The key components of the STEM POWER! initiative will target girls in U.S. middle schools and high schools, and include the development of STEM-related curricula that prepares girls for later success in college coursework, exposure to female role models to create a belief system that women can succeed in STEM, and exposure to exciting STEM-related careers in everything from game design to fashion design to connect girls` passions to STEM fields. As part of Discovery`s commitment as a founding member of the Equal Futures Partnership, STEM POWER! is an opportunity for like-minded partners to join forces on a program dedicated to realizing women’s human rights by expanding opportunity for women and girls to fully participate in public life and drive inclusive economic growth in our countries.

Also in support of the Equal Futures Partnership, Discovery Communications is committed to closing the girls` education gap in some of the world`s most under-resourced communities through an innovative program in Africa designed to build on the success of DCGEP. By creating educational video content with, for and about girls, and through innovative teacher training and community outreach, the `Discovery Girls` project will seek to increase enrollment and retention, and improve the education outcomes of marginalized girls.

Silver Spring, Md. (September 26, 2012) – Discovery Education has partnered with the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools to bring its new digital social studies textbook to classrooms. Social Studies Techbook™ transforms teaching and learning through a dynamic, interactive platform that links to historical resources; features activities that make students think, do and develop arguments supported by evidence; and provides students with 21st century skills needed for college and to compete in today`s global economy. The partnership is designed to support the Common Core State Standards and help schools meet the Obama Administration`s mandate to get digital resources in students` hands within five years. Middle schools that are part of the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools are invited to participate in a Social Studies Techbook™ beta program for the 2012-2013 school year.

A complete digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks, Social Studies Techbook™ features an innovative multimedia reference library that links key documents to people and places; interactive maps, digital explorations and activities; primary source documents; and informational text. “Mooresville Graded School District had the opportunity to pilot Discovery Education`s Science Techbook last school year. Our teachers love the digital textbook, and we saw substantial gains in student achievement,” said Dr. Mark Edwards, superintendent of Mooresville Graded School District and a member of the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools. “We are very excited about the partnership between Discovery Education and the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools and the opportunity to participate in the Social Studies Techbook beta program with other League members.”

    – “fit 4 the classroom” Engages Elementary Educators with Interactive Learning Tools and Incentives to Expand School-based Health and Wellness Education –

Silver Spring, Md. (September 25, 2012) – Sanford Health, WebMD and Discovery Education announce today the launch of fit 4 the classroom, a unique program for elementary educators, students and their families to encourage healthier food choices and more physical activity among children. Supported with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) based learning materials for teachers, the program connects balanced eating and activity with sleep and a healthy emotional life for a more holistic approach to wellness.

According to recent reports by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. From 2009 to 2010, almost 17 percent of children were reported obese. Educators and schools can play a key role in preventing childhood obesity by providing an environment where children can develop the good habits of a healthy and active lifestyle. fit 4 the classroom is designed to give educators the resources they need to create that healthy environment while also meeting STEM Common Core Standards.

Rooted in the four pillars of fit – mood, move, food and recharge – fit 4 the classroom helps promote healthy habits among students through dynamic, up-to-date cross-curricular lesson plans that span across STEM subjects and videos aligned to national education standards. The lesson plans reinforce the interconnectivity of the four pillars and encourage insightful conversations between educators, students and their families, covering topics such as the effect of music on mood, the benefits of stretching, understanding how much sugar they consume, and how sleep affects the body and mind.

“We are excited about our partnership with Discovery Education on fit 4 the classroom,” said Dave Link, Senior Executive Vice President of Sanford Health. “We believe teachers play such an important role to educate, motivate and inspire children to live a balanced, healthy lifestyle. With the engaging and helpful fit 4 the classroom resources, we hope to make it easier for educators to promote healthy choices that lead to lifelong healthy habits and behaviors in children and families.”

“As the leading source of health information for consumers and professionals and a free source of trusted information on children`s health and wellness, WebMD is proud to collaborate with Discovery Education and Sanford Health to support teachers and help families make healthy choices,” said Dr. Hansa Bhargava, WebMD`s expert pediatrician medical editor for pediatrics. “Children need a balanced lifestyle based on a holistic approach that considers food and exercise and also incorporates the need for rest so that kids have the energy to move and eat right.”

“Discovery Education is pleased to partner with Sanford Health and WebMD to bring the fit 4 the classroom lesson plans and videos to schools nationwide,” said Mary Rollins, Discovery Education vice president. “We know that educators play an integral role in providing students with practical knowledge that extends beyond the classroom and into their everyday lives. The resources available through this program can help students become stakeholders in their own health and empower educators and families to encourage healthy habits.”

The partnership also includes a national sweepstakes for elementary school teachers, awarding one grand prize winner a school assembly, a $5,000 prize and $5,000 in funding for the teacher`s school to extend programs that benefit student health and wellness education. Second and third place winners will each be awarded a $1,000 prize and $1,000 in funding for their school. Homeschool teachers can use the school funding toward a local non-profit. The deadline for entries is Feb. 14, 2013.

    – Explore the Blue Program Resources Expanded To Include Middle School Students –

Silver Spring, Md. (September 17, 2012) – Take Me Fishing and Discovery Education announce the launch of the Explore the Blue Water Challenge, a hands-on service learning challenge for middle school students designed to bring learning to life, by getting students out on the water and reinforcing the benefits of aquatic conservation. The Water Challenge is part of ExploretheBlue.com, a free, comprehensive resource empowering K-8 teachers and parents to engage students in a dialogue about the importance of outdoor recreational activities, such as boating and fishing, and to foster an appreciation for the protection and conservation of America’s lakes, rivers, streams and oceans.

For the Water Challenge, students in grades 6-8 are asked to choose a local waterway or water-related issue in their community, conduct research, develop and implement an action plan by getting out on their waterway and reflect on their findings in a two- to five-minute-video. One grand prize winning team will be awarded a US water-based adventure trip, a $5,000 grant for their school to continue working on their service project and a $1,000 scholarship check for each student on the winning team. Scholarship checks and teacher prizes will also be awarded to second and third place winning teams. Entries for the Water Challenge are due by March 14, 2013.

“We are delighted to expand our program with Discovery Education, encouraging a new group of middle-school aged children to get outside and learn about boating, fishing and the environment,” said Frank Peterson, President and CEO of the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, the non-profit that runs the Take Me Fishing campaign. “Ninety percent of adult outdoor enthusiasts are introduced to nature-based activities between the ages of 5 and 18. Providing opportunities to get involved with the outdoors through programs like Explore the Blue, will help foster an appreciation for our natural world for years to come.”

Building on the website’s robust collection of resources for students in grades K-5, Take Me Fishing and Discovery Education have expanded the site’s reach to K-8 students with new middle school earth and life science lesson plans to help nurture a passion for outdoor recreation and conservation. In addition to the new resources, more than ten family activities on the site will now be available in Spanish, providing important resources to Hispanic populations nationwide.

“Discovery Education is pleased to expand the Explore the Blue program to middle school students and give them a truly hands-on opportunity to explore the world around them and extend the concepts they are learning in school beyond the walls of their classrooms,” said Mary Rollins, vice president, Discovery Education. “By expanding the site’s resources to include students in grades K-8, we can help encourage all youth to participate in on-the-water activities and engage in aquatic conservation efforts.”

Take Me Fishing and Discovery Education are also launching the Explore the Blue Educator Sweepstakes. K-8 educators can enter the sweepstakes once a day until it closes on March 14, 2013 for the chance to win the grand prize of a one-day outdoor fishing adventure field trip for their entire class, outdoor exploration kits for their class and a $500 cash prize. Two runners up will each receive outdoor exploration kits for their class and a $100 cash prize.
