— ‘Juntos Contamos’ Provides Spanish Resources to Help More Families Lead Active, Healthy Lives —

— Additional Pre-K Resources Bring Active Healthy Living Awareness to a Younger Audience —

Silver Spring, Md. (May 22, 2013) – The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and Discovery Education are reinforcing their commitment to deepen active, healthy lifestyle resources with the launch of a Spanish language version of the popular Together Counts™ website. The new site, Juntos Contamos, will host neutral Spanish versions of school, home, and community resources on how to live a healthier life from TogetherCounts.com.

According to the US Census Bureau, 52 million Hispanics accounted for 16% of the total US population in 2011. This Latino community is continuing to grow and also experiencing an increase in obesity rates year after year. Acknowledging these statistics and ensuring that language isn`t a barrier to active and healthy living, Juntos Contamos addresses the undeniable need to provide educational, active and healthy living resources for the Hispanic community. The site complements its English counterpart by offering resources for both the home and school. Spanish-speaking families can utilize the resources to lead active, balanced lifestyles and connect what children are learning at school to their lives at home. Spanish-speaking classroom can also take advantage of free Spanish versions of the entire K-5 Energy Balance 101 lesson plans featured on the English language site.

“We want to be able to reach families all across our community when educating about healthy living, and we have a large number of Spanish-speaking parents and students” said Kristine Meurer, executive director of Student, Family and Community Supports for Albuquerque Public Schools. “The partnership between Discovery Education and the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation will offer one more tool we can use to reach more people and spread awareness about the need to stay active and follow a healthy diet.”

The Together Counts initiative is a national campaign that promotes active, healthy living through energy balance – balancing the calories we consume with the calories we burn. The program focuses its efforts on two critical areas – families and schools. It provides tips, tools and incentives for parents, teachers and school health professionals to use in encouraging energy balance.

Together Counts also announces the addition of preschool resources available this fall. The Pre-K offering, also in English and Spanish, will tap into new territory providing health and wellness content for those with young children. The program will offer developmentally appropriate activities with two broad thematic units, “Me and My Choices” and “Give It a Try!” highlighting the need for early adoption of healthy lifestyle choices.

“We are very proud to broaden our reach to the Spanish speaking community and to pre–schoolers by providing them with the same award winning curriculum that has already been so helpful to students and teachers across the country,” said Lisa Gable, President of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation. “Energy balance has been a hallmark of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and we are happy to be able to continue to build on the success of the Together Counts™ initiative.”

“Discovery Education is continuing its commitment in the fight against childhood obesity. Expanding our Together Counts initiative to reach Spanish speakers and Pre-K students will give even more people the important tools needed to make health and wellness a priority,” said Mary Rollins, vice president, Discovery Education.

Silver Spring, Md. May 6, 2013 – Bullying has become an all too harsh reality for many of America`s school children and one of the most pressing issues parents and educators face today. National PTA and Discovery Education are proud to stand alongside a nation of concerned families in pledging to take concrete steps toward change. In hopes of furthering the conversation, a series of town halls will launch beginning this spring to discuss bullying prevention and intervention as well as mental health assistance with students, parents, educators and other community members across the nation.

Announcing anti-bullying and comprehensive school safety initiatives as a top priority on his agenda, President Obama has challenged the nation to work together in empowering our children, educators and communities to find common solutions. The National PTA alongside Discovery Education have developed these town halls as a way to bring together our communities to address bullying and mental health assistance in a meaningful response to President Obama`s call for action.

Town halls will take place across the country, making stops in Charlotte (May 9) and Cincinnati (June 20) and additional cities throughout the year. Of these, some of the town halls will focus on family-school partnerships while others will focus on student interventions. All conferences will feature a taped message from Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden, in addition to an experienced panel of experts who will provide information on and solutions to bullying behaviors and on how to access mental health assistance. The town hall will promote interaction and discussion between the panel members and all attendees.

The Cincinnati town hall will be an important part of the 2013 National PTA Convention and Youth Summit this June. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Kari Byron, co-host of MythBusters, will be featured speakers at the town hall.

Discoveryeducation.com also will host a wide assortment of content that addresses contemporary issues students face around bullying.

“The students in our nation have a right to receive a high-quality education to prepare for their futures, and if they cannot go to school without fearing for their safety, they cannot exercise that right,” said Bill Goodwyn, CEO, Discovery Education. “Discovery Education is proud to be working alongside the National PTA and our school district partners to engage educators, parents and students to help bring about real changes that keep our children safe both in their schools and the communities that they call home.”

“Not every incident of bullying makes headlines, but each and every one is a significant disruption to a student`s learning and affects their social and emotional development,” said National PTA President Betsy Landers. “The National PTA is grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Discovery Education and answer parents` questions, promote promising strategies to address the problem, and mobilize students to take action.”

— Discovery Education STEM Camp broadens company`s deep commitment to ensuring all students have access to the critical tools needed to support college and workforce readiness —

— Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel`s Chicago Summer of Learning program and the Chicago Public Schools first to deploy free STEM tools —

Silver Spring, Md. (May 1, 2013) – Recognizing the need for meaningful, high-impact STEM curriculum that can be used in any environment when students are not in school, Discovery Education today announced the development of Discovery Education STEM Camp, a dynamic series of standards-aligned STEM curricula available at no cost to schools, districts, non-profit organizations and parents. Created for use as part of summer camps, after-school learning opportunities and other educational programs, Discovery Education STEM Camp supports President Obama`s “Educate to Innovate” campaign to encourage more students to pursue careers in STEM fields and is designed to keep students inspired and engaged in learning during the summer months and after school.

“Building STEM literacy among America`s next generation of leaders is critical to meet the global challenges that lie ahead and prepare students for tomorrow`s careers,” said Bill Goodwyn, CEO, Discovery Education. “Today`s announcement broadens our decade-long commitment to fostering student achievement. Discovery Education STEM Camp provides parents, educators and summer program leaders with easy-to-use resources that maximize after-school hours and summer months to keep students engaged in learning.”

Created in collaboration with leading educators and launched in partnership with the Afterschool Alliance and STEMconnector®, Discovery Education STEM Camp features hands-on and virtual labs, engineering challenges, digital investigations, videos and career connections designed to inspire and engage students in learning about STEM subjects. Launching this summer, STEM Camp will be deployed in conjunction with key partners, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel`s Chicago Summer of Learning program and the Chicago Public Schools. STEM Camp is designed to support the grand challenges of science issued by the National Academy of Engineers with curricula built around STEM-related topics of water, urban infrastructure and energy.

“Every summer, the city is a classroom for our children. Through our Chicago Summer of Learning initiative, we are encouraging all of our Chicago youth to participate in hands-on learning outside of the classroom, and I am proud that Discovery Education has partnered with this initiative to offer engaging learning opportunities that connect STEM education to real-world experiences and challenges,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

“We know that too often, unequal access to summer and after-school learning opportunities contribute to disparities in student achievement,” said Cindy Moss, director of global STEM initiatives for Discovery Education. “After-school hours and summer months provide rich opportunities to broaden all students` exposure to the STEM concepts we know are critical for their success in the classroom today and that are vital to prepare them to compete for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Discovery Education STEM Camp is part of Discovery Communications` “Connect the Dots” campaign, which is designed to help students connect the dots between learning and life. Other initiatives that are part of the campaign include the new science-focused series THE BIG BRAIN THEORY: PURE GENIUS on Discovery Channel, and a partnership between Science Channel and America`s manufacturers in support of Discovery`s ‘Discover Your Skills’ initiative to inspire STEM learning and careers in the skilled trades, among other programs.

In addition to the development of the Discovery Education STEM Camp, Discovery Education partners with like-minded organizations committed to STEM achievement to bring supplemental curriculum programs to schools at no cost. Some of Discovery Education`s long-term partners include the Siemens Foundation, 3M and America’s Navy. Through programs including the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge and Navy STEM for the Classroom, Discovery Education and its partners empower educators and promote STEM engagement in classrooms around the world.
