— Partnership to Address the Digital Divide and Need for Increased Access to Resources in the Nation’s Urban School Districts —

SILVER SPRING, Md. [August 27, 2013] – Today the National Urban League and Discovery Education announced a new partnership to bridge the digital divide by transforming urban education and preparing students to be college, career and citizenship ready. This new partnership, which U. S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan recognized during today’s Civil Rights panel Discovery Education hosted commemorating the 50th anniversary of the “March on Washington,” will seek to raise awareness about the benefits of digital learning and support programs that are deploying digital educational resources in meaningful and innovative ways.

Later this year, as part of a comprehensive effort to address the digital divide, Discovery Education and the National Urban League will host education thought-leaders and school district and community leaders for a forum at an Urban League affiliate focused on the state of digital learning.  This event will explore the power of digital learning to transform education by improving student outcomes, closing achievement and opportunity gaps, boosting educator skills in and out of school, providing enhanced content, and improving efficiency and productivity.

“Fifty years after the height of the civil rights movement, the promise of equal education and educational attainment has yet to be realized.  The achievement gap for African-American children, particularly in science and math, is a serious—but not insurmountable—barrier to their ability to fully participate in and benefit from the global economy,”  said National Urban League President Marc H. Morial. “We are proud to partner with Discovery Education, a leader in providing high-quality content that engages children and enriches learning and we look forward to integrating its STEM-focused products into our Project Ready STEM platform.”

In addition, Discovery Education will make its Discovery Education STEM Camp curriculum and professional development resources available to the affiliate through the Urban League’s signature program, Project Ready STEM, which delivers out-of-school time STEM instruction to middle and high school age students across the nation.  The program’s goal is to ensure that students have the necessary support and opportunities available to them in order to succeed in STEM-related class work, and to expose them to STEM-related careers, including the fields of health, digital media production, app development, green jobs, and robotics. Discovery Education STEM Camp is part of Discovery Communications’ “Connect the Dots” campaign, a new multimedia, national STEM education initiative designed to provide pathways for kids to achieve today and lead tomorrow by inspiring interest in STEM subjects and careers within industries looking for highly skilled workers..

“Bridging the digital divide in today’s classrooms helps ensure that all students have the opportunity to build the skills needed for college, career and citizenship,” said Bill Goodwyn, CEO, Discovery Education. “Schools across the country are quickly embracing the benefits of digital learning tools and the importance of increasing STEM education to prepare our children to compete in the global landscape. Our partnership with the Urban League is a great step toward ensuring the bar is set evenly for all of our students.”

— Discovery Education Streaming Plus supports educators district-wide implementing BYOT initiative with digital content and content-creation tools–

Silver Spring, Md. (Aug. 26, 2013) – Forsyth County Schools, the ninth largest school system in Georgia, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, announced today an expansion of their partnership.  This expansion supports Forsyth County Schools’ nationally recognized Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program, which encourages students to bring their personal technology tools to school for learning.

Forsyth County Schools began its BYOT initiative several years ago.  The initial pilot phase for BYOT involved 40 teachers in seven schools who explored innovative uses for students' technology tools through the 4 C's of Digital Age Learning – Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking. Over time, teachers have also developed strategies to address the following issues: equity of devices, responsible use, and classroom management.  Now, BYOT is supported in every school within the district, and as devices and tools continue to change, new instructional skills and strategies are evolving to promote their use.

Since 2001, Forsyth County Schools have used Discovery Education Streaming to transform teaching and learning in classrooms district-wide.  However, beginning in the 2013-2014 school year, Forsyth will begin implementing Discovery Education Streaming Plus in all district classrooms as part of an effort to have students utilize their personal technology devices in school for collaboration, research, problem solving, content creation and more.  Discovery Education services have been designed to be cloud-based and platform neutral to work with any hardware – iPad, tablet, mobile device, laptop or desktop.

“We are pleased to expand our relationship with Discovery Education,” said Dr. L.C. (Buster) Evans, superintendent of Forsyth County Schools. “While the device is an important component of our effort, it is world-class teaching and high-quality content that really engages students and facilitates the growth of the critical skills we know they need for college, careers and citizenship.  We will continue to look to Discovery Education to provide the videos, games, text and more that, when integrated effectively into instruction by great teachers, bring key ideas and concepts to life.”

Discovery Education Streaming Plus features more than 155,000 dynamic digital learning objects that support all subject areas and learning styles, including videos, skill builders, games, audio files, images, writing prompts and encyclopedia articles. It also includes customized assessments as well as hundreds of model lessons and instructional exemplars.

In addition, interactive student features like My DE and Board Builder transform classrooms by creating an environment that encourages engagement, inquiry and creativity. My DE provides students individualized learning and exploration resources via different pathways through content. Board Builder enables students to create content by gathering evidence, forming arguments and supporting their claims.

Discovery Education Streaming Plus also saves teachers valuable time by putting curriculum, instruction and assessment resources all in one place. It also engages students with dynamic and interactive digital resources and promotes the development of literacy, critical thinking, problem solving and higher order thinking skills to prepare students for college, careers and citizenship.

“Discovery Education is proud to be a part of Forsyth County Schools’ effort to leverage each student’s personal technology to increase student learning,” said Andy Schaefer, vice president, Discovery Education. “We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Dr. Evans and the entire Forsyth County team on our joint mission to accelerate achievement and inspire life-long learning.”

The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) supports Forsyth County Schools’ educators in their efforts to transform the learning experience with digital media.  A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

School districts are invited to visit Forsyth County Schools to learn more about how they harness the power of BYOT in their schools.  More information about these tours can be found at BYOT Tours.

— Educators rewarded with exclusive opportunity to meet with some of the country’s top scientists, government officials and thought leaders to better integrate STEM principles into classrooms —

ISELIN, N.J., August 13, 2013 – A select group of educators will return to their classrooms this fall better equipped to integrate real-world science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts into their classroom instruction after participating in the Siemens STEM Academy, an innovative professional development program sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and administered by Discovery Education in association with Oak Ridge Associated Universities and the College Board.

Last week, 50 select teachers from across the country took part in the exclusive Siemens STEM Institute, a fellowship designed to teach educators how to better integrate STEM disciplines into their classrooms. The fellowship provided participants with one-of-a-kind field trips, networking opportunities and access to 21st century digital tools. Earlier this summer, another group of 40 teachers participated in research projects at one of two Department of Energy national laboratories in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Richland, Wash., through the innovative Siemens Teachers as Researchers (STARs) fellowship, which matches educators with some of the country’s brightest scientific minds to collaborate in conducting authentic research.

“As a participant in this summer’s STARs program, I wholeheartedly believe that the STEM Academy is invaluable not only in terms of providing authentic research methods that are easily modified for classroom application but also in terms of re-fueling the passion in educators for implementing a research-based teaching style with their students,” said Jacqueline Parsons, Chemistry and Biology teacher at Tuscarora High School in Frederick, MD. “With this experience I can take my students beyond classroom walls and standardized exams to a place where I can equip them with 21st century skills and real world experiences. Science is cool! I won't let them forget that!”

The programs are designed to turn these Fellows into ambassadors who will work in their schools and communities to advance STEM education and pass on to their peers the tools and knowledge they gained over the summer. The hope is that the teachers will bring these experiences back into their classrooms and inspire students to pursue opportunities in STEM-related fields.

Siemens STEM Institute

Now in its fourth year, the Siemens STEM Institute connects teachers with the tools and best practices they need to inspire today’s students to pursue STEM education. The week-long professional development program at the world headquarters of Discovery Communications just outside of Washington, D.C., puts teachers together with leading scientists, thought-leaders, personalities and innovators whose work across STEM disciplines shape and define the science world today.

The STEM Fellows heard from guest speakers, including education pioneer Dr. Lodge McCammon; Senior Advisor of STEM for the Department of Education, Camsie McAdams and University of Iowa professor Dr. Joe Krajick. They had the opportunity to take field trips to leading institutions of STEM innovation and meet with practicing experts in the field including members of the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, CSPAN and the Chief of Museum and Learning at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The fellowship also provided opportunities for participants to network and collaborate with peers from both urban and rural school systems across middle and high school grade levels in an effort to bring new and innovative digital tools into the classroom. The mission is that these educators will become key influencers in their schools and communities to help change the way STEM subjects are taught in American classrooms.

Siemens STARs Program

STARs is an innovative fellowship sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and administered by Discovery Education in association with Oak Ridge Associated Universities and the College Board that brings two cohorts of 20 teachers each to participate in research projects either at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., or the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash.

This year, teachers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory studied neutron sciences, chemical sciences, biosciences and energy and transportation sciences. Those at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory studied energy consumption, metal organic frameworks, carbon dioxide injection in aquifers and microbial activity in the Columbia River.

"These are the types of professional development programs that give our teachers the tools to inspire their students to become our country’s next generation of innovators," said Jeniffer Harper-Taylor, president of the Siemens Foundation. "Only by mastering STEM education will our students have the best chance to excel and push the envelope in areas that will help this country grow. The Siemens STEM Academy fellows are important pieces of the Siemens Foundation’s effort to improve the state of our country’s STEM education.”

The programs were offered at no cost to the 90 teachers selected out of nearly 1,000 applications.

Please visit www.siemensstemacademy.com for additional information.

The application process for the 2014 STARs program and the 2014 STEM institute will open in late 2013.

— Mooresville Graded School District deepens partnership with Discovery Education preparing students for global citizenship with digital content —

Silver Spring, Md. (Aug. 5, 2013) – The nationally recognized Mooresville Graded School District (MGSD) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, announced today an expansion of their partnership that brings Discovery Education’s digital social studies textbook to middle school classrooms district wide. Discovery Education is the primary provider of digital content and digital textbooks to MGSD.

Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook™ series transforms teaching and learning through dynamic and interactive content that links to historical resources and features activities that help students think critically, develop arguments and investigate history. During the 2012-2013 school year, MGSD middle school educators piloted Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook and found it an ideal resource to help meet their goal of preparing every child, every day to be a successful and responsible citizen in a global workplace and community.

Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook is the latest Discovery Education service to be adopted by the district as part of their digital conversion. Previously, MGSD has adopted Discovery Education’s Science Techbook series, as well as Discovery Education Streaming Plus for use district wide. As part of its ongoing relationship with MGSD, Discovery Education has provided customized professional development to district educators supporting the integration of its digital content into classroom instruction.

Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook series is a complete digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks and features dynamic digital content and engaging resources for United States History, World History and World Geography & Cultures. Each subject area includes a multimedia reference library that links key documents to people and places; interactive maps, digital explorations and activities; primary source documents; and informational texts. It is designed to support multiple reading levels and languages, promote personalized learning, inspire curiosity, encourage critical thinking and enable project-based learning.

“We are excited to expand our partnership with Discovery Education,” said Dr. Mark Edwards, superintendent of Mooresville Graded School District. “One of the cornerstones of our transformation has been the introduction of the highest quality digital media into all core content areas. The deepening of our relationship with Discovery Education supports us as we provide all students a firm preparation for global citizenship.”

Significantly less expensive than traditional textbooks and platform independent, the all-in-one resource works with any device, including iPads, tablets, mobile devices, laptops or desktops, maximizing investment in existing technology and lowering district costs. Constantly updated to reflect today’s changing world, the series also enables teachers to incorporate current issues into their curriculum.

In addition, Discovery Education’s Techbook series supports educators as they implement the Common Core State Standards through detailed lesson plans and model lessons that demonstrate what the new standards look like in action. The series also includes custom assessments that measure students’ progress and recommend individualized resources that reinforce classroom instruction.

“Discovery Education is pleased to be a part of Mooresville Graded School District’s efforts supporting the learning of every child, every day and we look forward to continuing to provide Superintendent Mark Edwards and the entire Mooresville team with the highest quality digital content and targeted, effective professional development,” said Andy Schaefer, vice president, Discovery Education.

Discovery Education launched its revolutionary digital textbook series in the fall of 2011 with a Techbook program for K-8 science. Proven to increase student engagement and achievement, Discovery Education announced in March 2012 the expansion of the series to include middle school social studies and high school science subjects.
