— Digital content and professional development support district’s five-year organizational plan —

SILVER SPRING, Md. (September 30, 2013) – Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS), Maryland’s ninth largest school system, announced today it has partnered with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, to create rich, 21st century learning environments in classrooms district wide.

Previously, CCPS students and teachers had limited access to digital content in the classroom.  However, through a competitive grant from the Maryland Digital Learning Innovation Program, initiated by the Maryland State Department of Education and Gov. Martin O’Malley, CCPS will now provide the district’s students 24/7 access to an award-winning science digital textbook and dynamic curriculum-based content from Discovery Education.

This content supports Superintendent Stephen Guthrie’ five-year organizational plan, CCPS Vision 2018, by empowering CCPS educators with the digital resources and learning objects to ensure instruction that meet’s each student’s needs.  The district has committed both fiscal and technical resources to support the implementation of this content beyond the life of the grant so that the vision upon which these efforts are based can be sustained.

“Resources that are relevant to the 21st Century learner are critical to preparing students to be competitive in the global economy and meeting students’ instructional needs,” said Margaret Pfaff, director of curriculum and instructional resources, Carroll County Public Schools. “Access to the Discovery Education Science Techbook and Streaming Plus service will allow teachers to add value to each student’s learning experience from kindergarten through graduation, and we look forward to implementing these resources.”

Students in CCPS grades 3-8 will now use Discovery Education Science Techbook™, a fully interactive digital textbook with state-of-the-art lesson plans that can be used on any computer, laptop or tablet. In addition, all K-12 classrooms will have access to more than 155,000 dynamic digital learning objects that support all subject areas and learning styles through Discovery Education’s Streaming Plus service.

To ensure these resources are implemented with fidelity, CCPS is also providing its educators robust, customized professional development from Discovery Education experts who will guide them through the process of integrating these resources into classroom instruction.

Discovery Education Science Techbook is built upon the 5E model of instruction, a non-linear curriculum pathway that promotes inquiry-based learning and enhances literacy and thinking skills and improves student achievement through interactive digital lessons that bring science to life. It supports college, career and citizenship readiness, and can work with any device, anywhere, anytime.

Discovery Education Streaming Plus features model lessons, dynamic digital content and content creation tools to support educators, engage students and prepare them for college, career and global citizenship.  It also includes customized assessments as well as hundreds of lesson plans and model lessons that help facilitate the transition to a digital learning environment.

Interactive student features like My DE and Board Builder transform classrooms by creating an environment that encourages engagement, inquiry and creativity. My DE provides students individualized learning and exploration resources via different pathways through content. Board Builder enables students to create content by gathering evidence, forming arguments and supporting their claims.

In addition, the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will support CCPS educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experience with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is excited to partner with Carroll County Public Schools in our joint mission to support the success of each learner and prepare students for their future,” said Matt Monjan, vice president, Discovery Education. “This partnership illustrates the district’s commitment to transforming teaching and learning in a way that engages today’s students and prepares them for life beyond the classroom.”

— New Program Offers Schools, Parents and the Community $500,000 in Grants, Training and Awards —

Silver Spring, Md. (September 25, 2013) –The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), National PTA® and Discovery Education, announced today their Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Commitment to Action, Smart from the Start.  An early childhood education grant program, Smart from the Start, offers critically important healthy living resources to preschoolers and their families across the nation.

Smart from the Start is the latest brainchild of the Together Counts™ initiative by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and Discovery Education. Together Counts encourages educators, students and families to live active and healthy lives in an effort to address childhood obesity nationwide.

Indra Nooyi, Chairman of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo said, “Smart from the Start is a great example of the progress that can be achieved when diverse stakeholders join forces to support common goals. This program will have a meaningful impact on the lives of young people and help address important issues facing our communities.”

Smart from the Start will award up to 47 grants, ranging from $20K to $2.5K. Each grant will serve up to 500 families, community members, students, and faculty. Over the first two years of the program, up to 47,000 people will be enabled to make life-changing decisions for a healthier lifestyle.

Smart from the Start and our Pre-K Energy Balance programming gives us the chance to reach more than 24 million preschoolers in the United States,” said Lisa Gable, President of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation.” This program is a new addition to the $42 million multi-year financial commitment already made by our members to provide the tools parents and teachers need to promote active, healthy lifestyles.”

The Quaker Oats Company, a subsidiary of HWCF founding member PepsiCo, today announced it will take an active role in promoting the program to more than 2 million consumers through its social media and online properties – demonstrating a continued commitment to fueling healthy families. Bumble Bee Foods, LLC, General Mills, Inc., Nesquik and other HWCF partners will also promote the program through their social channels with an estimated reach of over 3 million consumers.

Launching this fall, Smart from the Start will support and bolster nutrition and active lifestyle initiatives for preschoolers, their families and communities by offering:

  • A grant program. This comprehensive and competitive awards program targets schools, parents and the community. With support from the HWCF coalition of organizations – most specifically National PTA – schools and communities across the country will be awarded grants and other prizes for the implementation of healthy living initiatives at the preschool level. Through our existing Together Counts site and National PTA’s wide network of local, council and state PTA’s as well as 14,000 Title I schools with Pre-K programs, the Smart from the Start grant program will award $500,000 in grants, training and awards.
  • Pre-K curriculum. Featuring developmentally-appropriate activities within two broad thematic units, Me and My Choices and Give It a Try!, the curriculum is designed in a flexible grab and go format. The Pre-K curriculum allows educators to integrate lessons and activities intermittently throughout the year or as a 20-day thematic unit. Each of the new lessons and activities are also aligned to a range of popular preschool health programs including Head Start, NAEYC, WIC, SNAP-Ed and NASPE among others.
  • Opportunities for community engagement with HWCF nonprofit partners. This will complement the grant and award program. These nonprofit organizations will have the opportunity to win cash prizes in exchange for supporting schools or communities in the grant application process. Nonprofit partners like Girl Scouts of the USA and Yellow Tractor will also be engaged in ensuring grant applicants are aware of turnkey programs that can be incorporated into applications and modified to fit unique Pre-K programs.

“Teaching children and families about the importance of energy balance, nutrition and physical activity is critical to help them make good decisions now and set the stage for a healthy lifestyle into adulthood,” said Otha Thornton, National PTA President. “PTAs play an important role in educating, engaging and bringing together families, schools and communities, and we are pleased to partner with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and Discovery Education to empower them with tools and resources to inspire active, healthy living.”

Smart from the Start is part of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and Discovery Education’s joint Together Counts initiative. With the help of TogetherCounts.com, schools and families nationwide gain free access to funds and dual language resources that help to build healthy environments and reduce childhood obesity. The Together Counts initiative is a national campaign that promotes active, healthy living through energy balance – balancing the calories we consume with the calories we burn. The program focuses its efforts on two critical areas – families and schools. It provides tips, tools and incentives for parents, teachers and school health professionals to use in encouraging energy balance.

— Partnership will provide Girls Inc. network of 136,000 girls with access to Discovery Education’s STEM Camp resources —

NEW YORK, September 24, 2013 – Girls Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold, and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-based digital content and professional development for K-12, announced a partnership to provide Discovery Education’s STEM Camp resources to girls across the United States.

Yesterday, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States, Valerie Jarrett, announced this partnership at an Equal Futures anniversary event in New York City. The Girls Inc.-Discovery Education partnership will provide a dynamic series of standards-aligned STEM curricula built around the National Academy of Engineering’s grand engineering challenges as well as providing opportunities for Girls Inc. educators and mentors to participate in a series of Discovery Education professional development opportunities. This professional development training will teach best practices for implementing innovative STEM curricula and will support the effective implementation of Discovery Education STEM Camp.

The Girls Inc.-Discovery Education partnership will utilize the network of local Girls Inc. affiliates across the U.S. and Canada that annually help 136,000 girls aged 6 – 18 gain substantive, informal education designed to inspire them so that they lead successful and productive lives.

Girls Inc. and Discovery Education are working together as part of the broader Equal Futures Partnership, a multinational campaign launched in 2012 by Valerie Jarrett and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and backed by UN Women, the World Bank, and leading businesses and non-profits, aimed at creating opportunities for women to participate fully in public life and to lead and benefit from inclusive economic growth.

Women employed in STEM fields earn on average 33 percent more than those employed in non-STEM fields, yet women represent only a quarter of all workers in STEM-related jobs. Girls Inc. is committed to helping girls see STEM as an option for their futures through interactive programs and introduction to women with STEM careers. Its professional staff and mentors provide hands-on activities that encourage girls to ask questions, persist, and solve problems and develop interest and skills in STEM subjects.

— Service based competition targets new cities and expands challenge to include younger grades —

Silver Spring, Md. (September 16, 2013) – For the second year in a row, Belk, Discovery Education and theInternational Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) are teaming up to encourage students to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to real-life challenges and facilitate positive changes in their communities.  Targeting new cities and expanding to include fourth and fifth-graders, the second year of the Belk Service Learning Challenge will once again encourage students to improve their communities by undertaking a service-learning project of their choice.

The Belk Service Learning Challenge is currently open to all students in grades 4-8 living within 50 miles of Atlanta, Ga., Birmingham, Ala., and Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point, N.C.  Working in teams of two to four with the support and guidance of a teacher/mentor, students are asked to identify a community issue and create an action plan using core classroom skills to solve the problem.

Entries for the Challenge are due by January 31, 2014. The grand prize winning team in each state will receive a $1,000 scholarship per student team member and a $250 teacher award. The second place team per state will receive a $500 scholarship per student team member and a $100 teacher award. The winning teams will also receive Belk prize packs for each student team member and teacher and will be celebrated at Belk in-store events in the spring.

“Taking an active role in our communities has been a core value at Belk since our founding almost 125 years ago, and teaming up with Discovery Education and ISTE in this initiative provides us an opportunity to teach students in our markets about the importance of service and giving back,” said Jessica Graham, Belk’s vice president of communications and community relations. “The winners of the inaugural Challenge have set the bar very high, and we are looking forward to seeing transformative projects from new participants.”

Winners of the inaugural year of the Challenge included the Neuse Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C. who created an assistance program for a group of Burmese refugees living in the Raleigh area. With the prize money awarded to them, the students from Neuse Christian Academy organized a series of English language classes, a job fair, acclimation kit, and lobbied their local congressman for relief.

“Service learning projects like the Belk Service Learning Challenge are not only a terrific way to show youth that corporate America is interested in education but this type of project also serves as an incentive outside of the normal routine of school to recognize and motivate exceptional students,” said Les Burleson, student advisor to last year’s Grand Prize winners from Raleigh, NC. “The benefits are undeniable. Teachers can use the Challenge as a part of their classroom differentiation plan and students can stretch their boundaries in ways that would otherwise not be available.”

To supplement the efforts of these students in their service learning projects, dynamic online destinationBelkServiceLearningChallenge.com anchors the Challenge and equips 4th-8th grade classrooms with free, standards-based service-learning curriculum, including lesson plans and multimedia tools.
