The campaign is a part of Discovery’s comprehensive Disaster Relief and Rebuilding initiative, responding to national and global disasters by launching matching campaigns for disaster-stricken areas, and partnering with rebuilding organizations to rebuild homes destroyed by disasters. The 30-day campaign aims to amplify the collective impact of Discovery employees’ generosity.

Discovery Impact hallmark initiatives include an annual day of global employee volunteerism and a pro bono creative marathon and conference.

Started in 2012, #GivingTuesday is a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In the same way that retail stores take part in Black Friday, the partners behind #GivingTuesday want the giving community to come together and create and commit to a project for #GivingTuesday and then help spread the word to their networks.

In 2012, more than 2,500 partners from all 50 states joined in the initiative, leading to more than $10 million in online donations a 46% increase in online donations and an average gift increase of 25%. More than 50 million people worldwide spread the word about #GivingTuesday – resulting in milestone trending on Twitter.

New Online Destination, “Open Doors: Unlock Your Future,” Launches with Educational Resources and Challenge Offering $10,000 in Prizes

Silver Spring, MD and Englewood, CO (November 12, 2013) The Western Union Foundation, Discovery Education and the Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) announced today the launch of  Open Doors: Unlock Your Future, a new online destination providing high school students, educators and families with high-quality tools and resources to help students prepare for their future through in-depth career exploration. The program represents the shared vision of its partners, who attribute the future success of America’s youth to a solid educational foundation.

Designed to encourage high school students to explore and prepare for their future, the program encourages career-readiness through an expansive offering including:

  • Career Resources for Students: The site’s digital resource center features an interactive tool that helps students match personal interests with complementary career options. In addition, the site’s career profile section gives students a firsthand look at potential career opportunities with in-depth interviews featuring professionals in five of the hottest fields of tomorrow, including construction management, biomedical engineering and medical technology.
  • Targeted Resources for Parents and Children: Bridging the gap between parents and their children, Open Doors: Unlock Your Future offers bilingual family discussion starters intended to foster open dialogue around students’ post-high school goals and desires. The discussion starters help parents better facilitate conversations around crucial questions: how can students identify career options that align with their interests, where do students begin with career research, and what are the actionable steps that need to be taken? Available in both English and Spanish, Open Doors: Unlock Your Future ensures that these resources are reaching the largest possible audience consciously inclusive of those communities displaying the greatest need.
  • Open Doors Challenge: The program’s dynamic online resources are accompanied by the inaugural Open Doors: Unlock Your Future Challenge. Presented by Discovery Education, the Challenge is open to high school students nationwide, and aims to underscore the connection between personal interests and career opportunities by encouraging students to reflect on their future by making direct connections between what they strive to do in the future with their current passions and interests. The winning high school student, selected at random, will receive $5,000 to support their own career plans as well as $5,000 for their school’s job readiness efforts.

With wide access to a dedicated network of educators, students and parents across the country, Discovery Education will ensure that Open Doors: Unlock Your Future reaches into classrooms and homes nationwide. Through grassroots outreach, direct-to-teacher e-blasts, e-newsletters and media campaigns, the program’s resources will reach deep into the educational community.

“We are pleased to work with Discovery Education and the Association of Educational Publishers to bring this important initiative to parents, teachers and students across the country,” said Patrick Gaston, president of the Western Union Foundation.  “As an organization, the Western Union Foundation is committed to supporting educational programs that enable career readiness and set the framework for financial inclusion.  By creating a dialogue around career opportunities, and utilizing online and digital platforms to extend the reach of the effort, the Open Doors program is an innovative approach to unlocking the true potential of America’s youth.”

The Open Doors initiative with Discovery Education and the Association of Educational Publishers is an extension of the Western Union Education for Better program, which is a three-year commitment to growing young minds through strategic grants that focus on secondary education and vocational training.

“I'm excited to share this program that can give students the tools and resources to better understand how their current passions can be nurtured and developed to create meaningful careers and futures,” said teacher Rita Mortenson of Verona Area High School in Verona, WI. “This program is a valuable resource in preparing students to be college, career and global citizenship ready.”

“We are thrilled to be a part of this ambitious initiative that encourages high school students to explore the wide variety of career options that are available,” said Susan Fletcher, grant manager for the Association of Educational Publishers and Senior Director at the PreK-12 Learning Group of the Association of American Publishers. “Open Doors will help enlighten students to the possibilities and give them a foundation on which they can build their futures.”

– “fit 4 the classroom” program re-launches with interactive lesson plans and an educator sweepstakes offering $10,000 for healthy living initiatives in schools –

Silver Spring, Md. (November 6, 2013) – Sanford Health, WebMD and Discovery Education announced today the fall re-launch of fit 4 the classroom, a unique program for elementary educators, students and their families to promote students ‘whole-body’ health and wellness. Now in its second year, fit 4 the classroom announces the expansion of its resources to include new interactive lessons as well as the return of a national sweepstakes offering educators nationwide the opportunity to win funds for health and wellness initiatives at their schools.

Rooted in the four pillars of fit – mood, move, food and recharge – fit 4 the classroom helps to promote healthy habits among students with dynamic, cross-curricular lesson plans and videos that span across science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects aligned to national education standards. The program recognizes, as young children begin their educational journey, that elementary educators not only have the opportunity to build the foundation for a child’s academic success, but also provide an environment where children can develop good habits for a healthy lifestyle.

“It’s important that we show our students that being on the move is just as important to their learning as studying in the classroom,” said Courtney Bake, Principal of Fairfield Elementary School in Fairfield, MT. “Our school was fortunate enough to win the grand prize in last year's fit 4 the classroom sweepstakes and as a result we’ve been able to use the grant to start a running recess club at our school."

Each lesson plan available on the site reinforces the interconnectivity of the 4 fit pillars – bringing mood, move, food and recharge together as a holistic approach to healthy living. Lessons are intended to encourage insightful conversations between educators, students and their families, covering topics such as the effect of music on mood, and how sleep affects the body and brain. Techniques include using analytical and graphing skills to explore the concepts of potential and kinetic energy connecting those ideas to athletic performance and living a healthy lifestyle.

The program also includes the return of a national sweepstakes for elementary school teachers, awarding one grand prize winner a $5,000 prize as well as an additional $5,000 in funding for the school to extend programs that benefit student health and wellness education.  Second and third place winners will each be awarded a $1,000 prize and an additional $1,000 in funding for their school. Homeschool teachers can use the school funding toward a local non-profit. The deadline for entries is March 11, 2014.

‘With a captive audience of 55 million children in schools every day, it is vital to use this opportunity to teach them about the importance of healthy habits,” said Dr. Hansa Bhargava, WebMD Pediatrician. “The fit 4 the classroom sweepstakes helps teachers and schools give children the tools they need to have a healthy lifestyle and ultimately lead better lives.”

“Sanford Health is happy to partner with Discovery Education and WebMD for the second year of fit 4 the classroom. We are pleased with the positive response that the program received in the first year from schools and teachers across the country.  As we expand fit 4 the classroom, we look forward to continuing to help teachers integrate the fit principles without taking valuable time away from critical STEM subjects,” said Neal Nachtigall, Director of Children's Health and Fitness Initiatives, at Sanford Health.

“Educators and schools play a key role in promoting children’s health and wellness by providing an environment where children can develop good habits of a healthy and active lifestyle,” said Mary Rollins, Vice President, Discovery Education. “fit 4 the classroom allows students to make connections between those habits they learn in the classroom and their everyday lives effectively incorporating those lessons into real-world scenarios.”
