Discovery Channel content now available through Discovery Education Streaming and Discovery Education Streaming Plus includes:

  • The President’s Gatekeepers: For the first time ever, all 20 living White House Chiefs of Staff come together to share their previously untold stories. This series profiles pivotal moments from the past nine presidential administrations and reveals how each Chief of Staff worked to transform the President's agenda into reality. In addition to looking at the day-to-day responsibilities of the Chief of Staff, the program showcases the role of the Chief of Staff in key events such as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Cold War, the 2008 economic crisis, the assassination attempt on President Reagan, and more.

  • Flipping the White House: When a U.S. President is sworn into office at high noon on Inauguration Day, a hand-picked and highly trained team is tasked with transitioning the old administration out as the new administration moves in, all in less than six hours. The outgoing president exits the home on Inauguration Day, and the incoming president enters the home complete with pictures on the walls, books on the shelves, and socks in the drawers just a few hours later. This special interviews former White House staffers who describe the flipping process and share insight about past presidential transitions.

  • JFK: The Lost Tapes: Audio recordings from Air Force One, the Dallas Police Force, on-site radio reporters and top government officials reveal the riveting, behind-the-scenes story of the Kennedy assassination on November 22, 1963.  The program paints a vivid portrait of one of the greatest manhunts in American history and offers new insight into the final moments of President Kennedy's life.

  • All the President’s Men Revisited: This program brings Watergate to life with riveting archival footage, shocking Oval Office recordings, and compelling new interviews with those who perpetuated the crimes, those who pursued them, and those who portrayed them. The presentation unravels the story that began with a “third-rate burglary attempt” and escalated into the first and only Presidential resignation in American history. A remarkable cast tells the tale, including Robert Redford, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Stewart, Rachel Maddow, and others.

“The Discovery Channel programs recently added to Discovery Education’s streaming services are both educational and engaging,” said Monique Liles, a teacher at Babb Middle School in Georgia’s Clayton County Schools. “This content empowers students to learn about our nation’s leaders in ways that are simply not possible through the use of traditional text.  I plan to use these resources to create engaging classroom experiences in which my students can more deeply examine the individuals shaping American history.”

— Dynamic digital textbooks and customized professional development to be implemented in conjunction with district’s 1:1 learning program —

SILVER SPRING, Md., [January 23, 2014]Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, announced today an expansion of its partnership with Horry County Schools (HCS), South Carolina’s third largest school system and a member of Digital Promise’s League of Innovative Schools.  Through this expansion, Discovery Education will support Horry County Schools’ new Personalized Digital Learning (PDL) initiative with engaging digital content and sustained, customized professional development.

Horry County Schools’ PDL initiative supports the district’s vision of being a premier, world-class school system in which every student acquires an excellent education and where schools are welcoming centers organized around high-quality teaching and learning.  The district’s PDL initiative supports that vision by providing students individual pathways for learning and by enhancing each teacher’s ability to create customized student learning plans that are more engaging.

At the beginning of this school year, Horry County Schools launched the new 1:1 effort as part of the PDL initiative, distributing iPads to students in all of the district’s 11 middle schools. The program will expand to include all students in grades 3-12 over the next three years. To further support the district’s PDL initiative, HCS is now providing students in grades 6-8 access to the Discovery Education Science Techbook digital textbook, a fully interactive program with state-of-the-art lesson plans that can be used on any computer, laptop, or tablet. Since 2004, Horry County Schools has utilized both Discovery Education Streaming and Discovery Education’s professional development services to transform teaching and learning.

HCS is supporting its PDL initiative with job-embedded and ongoing professional development for both school leaders and teachers.  This professional development focuses on integrating educational technologies into classroom instruction and developing school-wide practices and strategies to meet a variety of educational challenges. Discovery Education’s team of professional development experts are contributing to the professional development component of the PDL initiative by providing professional learning opportunities that concentrate on how to use digital content in HCS classrooms to differentiate and personalize learning.

“Personalized learning is the key to increasing student engagement and allows us to maximize the value each student receives by tailoring the learning based on a student’s needs, interests, and ability,” said Dr. Cindy Elsberry, superintendent of Horry County Schools.  “Through the thoughtful implementation of our Personalized Digital Learning initiative, the Horry County School District is creating the authentic digital learning environments today’s students need for college, career and citizenship readiness.”

Discovery Education Science Techbook is built upon the 5E model of instruction, a non-linear curriculum pathway that promotes inquiry-based learning, enhances literacy and thinking skills, and improves student achievement through interactive digital lessons that bring science to life. The Techbook series is revolutionizing instruction by supporting multiple learning styles through interactive content that specifically appeals to digital learners and real-time updates that allow teachers to incorporate current events and cutting-edge thinking into their curricula.

In addition, Discovery Education Techbook digital textbooks offer built-in assessments that measure students’ progress and support individualized classroom instruction. Aligned to individual state standards as well as the Common Core State Standards, the Techbook series creates learning environments that promote collaboration, creativity, and participatory learning.

Discovery Education Science Techbook is cloud-based and works on any platform: iPads, tablets, mobile devices, laptops, and desktops. In addition, the model lessons embedded throughout the Techbook series provide teaching strategies for different classroom configurations, whether whole group, small group, or 1-to-1. Techbook digital textbooks are also a substantially less expensive option per student than a traditional textbook, with additional savings derived from a lack of textbook replacement or inventory costs.

“We are thrilled to support Horry County Schools’ Personalized Digital Learning initiative,” said Discovery Education director Rob Warren. “The PDL initiative illustrates Horry County Schools’ continuing commitment to providing a premier education to their students, and we look forward to continuing to support their efforts in the future.”

In addition, the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will continue to support HCS educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

— Data Illustrates Use of Science Techbook Also Boosts ELL Student Achievement in Science —

SILVER SPRING, Md., January 16, 2014 − A new study released today found that usage of Discovery Education’s digital science textbook is associated with higher science achievement scores. Specifically, the research suggests that the Discovery Education Science Techbook™ increases student science achievement and bolsters the effectiveness of instruction when teachers with one or more years of experience use it in classroom practice.

Conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC, the study reviewed results on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in science for fifth and eighth grade students in Collier County, Fla. During the 2011-2012 school year, Collier County Public Schools partnered with Discovery Education to implement Discovery Education Science Techbook, a digital textbook for their science curriculum. Included in the implementation was in-depth, customized professional development from Discovery Education’s professional development team, which supported educators as they integrated the Science Techbook into classroom instruction.

The researchers concluded that students whose teachers had one or more years of teaching experience and used Science Techbook for instruction scored higher on the FCAT than students whose teachers had similar levels of experience but had not used Science Techbook for instruction.  Additionally, fifth grade English Language Learner (ELL) students whose teachers used Science Techbook for instruction were 66 percent more likely to score at the proficient level or higher on the FCAT, compared to ELL students whose teachers were not using Science Techbook for instruction.

Other key findings from the study include:

  • At the fifth grade level, on average FCAT scores were 4.36 points higher among students whose teachers had more than one year of teaching experience and used Science Techbook than for students with similar teachers who did not use Science Techbook.
  • At the eighth grade level, on average FCAT scores were 16.54 points higher for students whose teachers had more than one year of teaching experience and used Science Techbook than for students whose teachers had similar levels of experience who did not use Science Techbook.
  • Fifth grade ELL students with teachers who used Science Techbook during the 2011-2012 year scored about 14 points higher on the Science FCAT on average than ELL students whose teachers did not use Techbook.

“The results of this study are a testament to the fact that Discovery Education Science Techbook fosters engaging and effective digital learning experiences,” said Dr. Kamela Patton, superintendent of Collier County Public Schools. “We are proud to partner with Discovery Education to provide our teachers the high-quality resources creating the dynamic, exciting learning environments we know are critical to student success.”

Discovery Education Science Techbook series is a complete digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks and features compelling video; interactive text; digital simulations and explorations; virtual and hands-on labs; and an interactive glossary with animations, audio and video. The series is available for K-8 science and high school courses including Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science and Physics.

“These results continue to prove that utilization of dynamic digital resources like the Discovery Education Techbook series, along with intentional professional development, has the power to enrich instruction and advance student achievement,” said CEO of Discovery Education, Bill Goodwyn. “When educators have the tools and resources to create interactive learning experiences that support a variety of learning styles, abilities, and languages, they can create an environment that supports academic success and the skills necessary for college, careers and global citizenship.”

In addition, Techbooks offer built-in assessments that measure students’ progress and support individualized classroom instruction. Aligned to state standards, the Techbook series creates learning environments that promote collaboration, creativity and participatory learning.

Discovery Education Science Techbook is cloud-based and works on any platform-iPads, tablets, mobile devices, laptops, or desktops. In addition, the model lessons embedded throughout the Techbook provide teaching strategies for different classroom configurations– whether whole group, small group, or 1-to-1. Techbooks are also a substantially less expensive option per student than a traditional textbook, with additional savings derived from a lack of textbook replacement or inventory costs.

“By adopting Science Techbook as a core instructional resource, the Texas State Board of Education is helping to bring the world of science to life for every type of learner in the state through the use of dynamic and engaging digital content,” said Brett Felten, Director at Discovery Education. “We are excited to continue to partner with school districts in Texas and across the country as they leverage digital resources to create rich, 21st century learning environments.”

In order to more fully impact student achievement, Discovery Education partners with districts to effectively transform teaching and learning. Understanding that teacher engagement is critical to that process, all Techbooks include rich professional development that supports the effective integration of digital content into classroom practice.  The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) further supports educators in their efforts to transform the learning experience with digital media.  A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.
