— Participants Invited to Experience Award-Winning Digital Textbook Series —

Silver Spring, Md. (February 26, 2014) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today hosted the second annual Future@Now: Roadmap to the Digital Transition. A forum focused on one of the most critical issues in education today – implementing effective, district-level digital transitions that prepare students for citizenship, college, and careers, Future@Now provided attendees a step-by-step, actionable roadmap for transforming teaching and learning through educational technology, dynamic digital content, and job-embedded, sustained professional development.

Approximately 2,000 participants in 40 states and countries including Italy, China, Canada, New Zealand and Greece joined the live stream of the event, which was held at Discovery Education’s global headquarters in Silver Spring, Md. Offering stimulating panel discussions throughout the day that highlighted the key steps in a successful digital transition, Future@Now explored a variety of important topics, such as planning, creating a community and culture of change, developing teacher leaders, and integrating digital devices into the classroom.

“In the ever-evolving world of digital learning, it is important to stay on the cutting edge and be aware of what’s new, what’s working and what isn’t working,” said Lori Gash, curriculum coordinator, Meridian Joint School District No.2. “At Future@Now, I gleaned valuable insight regarding the implementation of best practices as they relate to the digital transformation and digital integration.”

Featured speakers included Congressman George Miller (D-CA), sponsor of the Transforming Education through Technology Act and the Senior Democratic Member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, and Alberto Carvalho, winner of the 2014 AASA Superintendent of the Year Award.  In addition, a variety of senior policy-makers, educators, and business, association, and foundation leaders joined Future@Now to offer insight into how various community stakeholders can support the successful transition to digital learning environments.

“All students deserve access to educational tools that will give them a 21st-century skill set and prepare them for high-growth, high-demand jobs,” said Representative George Miller, senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee. “Making the latest digital technology available to all students is monumental work, with the potential to dramatically change what, how, and how well our students learn. This major shift will also require adjustments in how we run schools and how we teach. It is essential that we continue to explore these issues so that we can manage the digital transition well and continue to improve the education of students across the country.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, as part of Discovery Education and the White House’s “Of the People” webinar series, concluded the event by taking participants on a live visit to a digital classroom at Wheatley Education Campus in Washington, D.C.

During Future@Now, Discovery Education announced that educators across the United States will be offered up to 60-day, no cost trial access to the Discovery Education Techbook™ series, the award-winning digital textbook solution featuring K-12 science; physics, chemistry and biology; and middle school social studies. In addition, they will be extended access to the evaluator edition of the Discovery Education Math Techbook series, which will give them the opportunity to submit feedback on how this new digital textbook can best meet the needs of their students. Finally, educators across Canada will be given up to 60-day trial access to the Discovery Education Science Techbook series, while all educators will be provided with the opportunity to participate in a series of virtual professional development sessions, at no cost, to support the effective classroom implementation of digital tools.

The Discovery Education Techbook series is a digital textbook solution for K-12 teachers and students in science, social studies and, launching in the fall of 2014, middle and high school mathematics. Built from the ground-up to be specifically aligned to national and state standards, the series delivers individualized resources and engages students in learning concepts through rich digital content, including virtual labs, video clips, an interactive glossary, and more. It is also cloud-based and platform-neutral, working with whatever hardware a district has – iPad, tablet, mobile device, laptop, or desktop.

“Discovery Education would like to thank everyone who participated in and supported our second annual Future@Now,” said Bill Goodwyn, CEO of Discovery Education. “We are thrilled to provide a forum for educators to learn best practices from those who have had success improving student outcomes through the use of technology. – LIVE Virtual Field Trip Highlights the Creative Process and Science Behind Google’s Logo Transformation –

SILVER SPRING, Md. (February 25, 2014) – As part of the seventh annual Doodle 4 Google competition, Discovery Education and Google are taking students from across the U.S. behind the scenes to meet the team of artists who create Google’s doodles.

Offering classrooms nationwide a chance to hear from the Google illustrators and engineers behind the world-renowned doodles, “From Sketches to the Google Homepage” will broadcast live from Google headquarters on Wednesday, March 5 at 1 p.m. ET. The virtual field trip will give students a first-hand look at how a doodle comes to life including the brainstorming, design tools and science behind the process.  In addition, Sabrina Brady, the 2013 Doodle 4 Google competition winner, will tell her story of how she created her touching doodle and is pursuing her dreams in art school.

“Discovery Education is thrilled to work with Google to inspire students nationwide with real-world experiences that deepen engagement,” said Lori McFarling, Chief Marketing Officer, Discovery Education. “Sparking student curiosity not only ignites innovative thinking, but also serves as a critical ingredient in creating the problem-solvers that will be so critical to the workforce of the future.”

The Doodle 4 Google competition invites K-12 students to use their artistic talents to think big, redesigning the homepage logo for millions to see with the chance to become an honorary Google doodler for a day.

“Each year we are so impressed by the talents and ideas coming from these kids.  This year’s theme about invention is especially close to our heart at Google since throughout history, ideas big and small, practical and playful, have started out as doodles.  I can’t wait to see what the students come up with this year,” said Ryan Germick, Doodle Team Lead.

In addition to the virtual field trip, Discovery Education worked alongside Google to create classroom resources designed to kick start creativity in K-12 classrooms including free videos and corresponding activity packs.

“Cutting-edge classroom resources like this virtual field trip give our students the opportunity to see and experience the powerful results that so often come from the marriage of creativity and science,” said Selena Ward, Instructional Lead Teacher for Arts Integration, Northwestern High School, Prince George’s County Public Schools. “This new content is inspiring our students to think in creative, original ways, and showing them how the creative process, coupled with science and engineering, are put to work at one of the world’s most innovative companies.”

New course developed specifically for Texas educators and fully aligned to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards

Silver Spring, Md., (February 18, 2014) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, announced today it has added a new Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC) course to the Discovery Education Science Techbook™ for Texas. Built from the ground-up and developed specifically for Texas school districts, the new IPC course is fully aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards.

Now available for educators statewide, Science Techbook for Texas is a complete digital textbook featuring compelling video; interactive text; digital simulations and explorations; virtual and hands-on labs; and an interactive glossary with animations, audio and video. Through its adoption process, the Texas State Board of Education recently approved the use of the Discovery Education Science Techbook series as a core instructional resource for elementary, middle and high school science courses.

The new IPC course, and all courses within the Science Techbook, offer a variety of resources to support Spanish-speaking students.  In addition to comprehensive literacy supports for English language learners and struggling readers, the IPC course also includes hundreds of Spanish language video segments, a multimodal interactive glossary with definitions in Spanish, and a Spanish reading path with text-to-voice capability.

“Every student in Texas should graduate with a foundational knowledge of physics and chemistry. The Integrated Physics and Chemistry course recently added to Discovery Education's Science Techbook provides a greater understanding of the concepts found within the TEKS, and how those concepts impact our everyday lives,” said Yolanda M. Rey, Ph.D., Executive Director, Texas ASCD. “This resource will help create engaging classroom experiences that encourage students to think, analyze and communicate like scientists.”

All K-12 Discovery Education Science Techbook courses provide coverage of the TEKS and English Language Proficiency standards. In addition to the new IPC course, Science Techbook is currently available for K-8 science and high school courses including Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, and Physics.

A cloud-based application that works on any platform and classroom configuration, the Science Techbook series is built upon the 5E model of instruction that promotes inquiry-based learning, enhances literacy skills and improves student achievement.  A recent study conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC found that usage of Science Techbook increased student achievement scores, including that of ELL learners on the FCAT, Florida’s standardized test.  In order to more fully impact student achievement, Texas educators using Science Techbook will receive rich professional development that supports the effective integration of digital content into classroom practice.  Techbooks are also a substantially less expensive option per student at nearly half the cost of a traditional textbook, with additional savings derived from a lack of textbook replacement or inventory costs.

“We are excited to support Texas educators with the addition of an integrated physics and chemistry digital course available through our Science Techbook,” said Brett Felten, director, Discovery Education. “Paired with our customized professional development, this course will satisfy students’ scientific curiosity and drive student achievement.”

— Dynamic Multimedia Resources Support District’s “Students & Teachers Accessing Tomorrow” —

TOWSON, Md. (February 5, 2014) – Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) will partner with Discovery Education, a leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to support the school system’s digital conversion, called Students & Teachers Accessing Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.).

The five-year partnership will support an initiative centered on transforming teaching and learning by effectively integrating technology into the classroom. The instructional digital conversion, which was introduced as a school system priority last year by BCPS Superintendent Dallas Dance, calls for a fundamental curriculum-driven shift in teaching and learning through the integration of technology.

The partnership will provide classrooms across the district with access to Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a library of more than 200,000 digital learning resources that support all subject areas and learning styles. In addition, Discovery Education will deliver professional development to support district teachers as they implement S.T.A.T.

“To prepare every student with the skills they will need, we must ensure our schools are equipped with engaging, high-quality content that blends with digital learning,” said Dr. Dance.  “As we celebrate Digital Learning Day, we are excited to provide educators access to Discovery Education’s digital resources.”

Discovery Education’s Streaming Plus content will support the school system’s strategic plan, Blueprint 2.0, and its focus on enabling all students to be globally competitive upon graduation. Ten Baltimore County elementary schools, called “lighthouse schools,” will begin S.T.A.T. implementation during the 2014-15 school year, with each school providing individual digital learning devices for all students in grades 1-3 and implementing blended learning environments. The district’s goal is to fully adopt 1:1 personalized learning environments for all schools and grade levels by the 2017-2018 academic year.

To ensure these new digital resources are introduced and used effectively, educators also will receive curriculum-based professional development from both Discovery Education and the school system’s organizational development and technology staffs. In addition to participating in extensive professional development, BCPS school leaders, staff development teachers, and educators will take part in a Teacher Leader Corps (TLC) learning community, a program that showcases creative ways to motivate students and invigorate curriculum using the latest innovations in teaching and learning.

“We are proud to partner with BCPS to help bring the inspiring vision of Blueprint 2.0 to life and empower educators with rich, dynamic multimedia content they can leverage to enhance instruction,” said Coni Rechner, senior vice president at Discovery Education. “This partnership illustrates the district’s commitment to creating a digital and blended learning culture that builds the skills and knowledge necessary for postsecondary success among all students.”
