— Dynamic multimedia resources and customized professional development to be implemented in conjunction with district’s 1:1 learning program —

Silver Spring, Md. (March 26, 2014) –Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today a new collaboration with Tennessee’s Oak Ridge Schools to create authentic digital learning environments in classrooms district-wide. Through a six-year partnership, Discovery Education will support Oak Ridge Schools’ plan to implement a 1:1 learning initiative with engaging digital content and sustained, customized professional development.

This new partnership also supports Superintendent Dr. Bruce Borchers’ recently announced plan to transform Oak Ridge Schools into the premier preK-12 STEM school district in the nation. The district’s goal is to become a leader in STEM education through continuation and expansion of Oak Ridge’s already well-regarded educational opportunities for students along with additional enhancements to technology infrastructure, professional development and access to devices, which will place dynamic digital content in the hands of each student.

As part of this new collaboration, all K-12 classrooms will have access to Discovery Education Streaming Plus.  Discovery Education Streaming Plus features more than 155,000 dynamic digital learning objects that support all subject areas and learning styles, including videos, skill builders, games, audio files, images, writing prompts and encyclopedia articles. It also includes hundreds of model lessons and instructional exemplars.

In addition, Oak Ridge students in grades K-8 will use the Discovery Education Science Techbook and middle school students will utilize the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook. Discovery Education digital textbooks create learning environments that promote collaboration, creativity and participatory learning. The series delivers individualized resources and engages students in learning concepts through rich digital assets, including virtual labs, video clips, an interactive glossary, and more.

Oak Ridge Schools is also providing its educators robust, customized professional development from Discovery Education experts who will guide them through the process of integrating Streaming Plus and Techbooks into classroom instruction. 50 teachers will join a STEM cohort that will receive 10 days of customized professional development and coaching from Discovery Education each year.

“Oak Ridge Schools’ goal is to become the premier STEM school district in the country, and this new collaboration with Discovery Education will help us meet this goal,” said Dr. Bruce Borchers, superintendent, Oak Ridge Schools. “We are looking forward to working with Discovery Education’s expert team to create the authentic digital learning environments that will provide students the critical skills they will need to be successful not only in STEM, but in any field of their choosing.”

This initiative commences at a STEM Leadership Retreat for Oak Ridge educators, administrators and community members scheduled for later this month. During this retreat, the Oak Ridge School Board, superintendent and senior staff, teachers and local STEM leaders will examine STEM data for their region, experience STEM teaching and learning, and begin to create the STEM definition and vision for their district.

In addition, the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will support Oak Ridge Schools’ educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to be a part of Oak Ridge Schools’ STEM and digital transition initiatives,” said Rob Warren, regional director, Discovery Education. “The efforts of Dr. Borchers and his team illustrate the school system’s deep commitment to preparing their students for college, careers and citizenship, and we look forward to working with them to support the success of each learner.”

– Discovery Education App for iPad supports 24/7 learning and helps bridge the digital divide –

Silver Spring, Md. (March 17, 2014) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms nationwide, today announced the launch of a new iPad app for its award-winning Science Techbook series. The Discovery Education Techbook app is available for download on the App Store in the U.S. and Canada at no cost and empowers educators and students with an active Science Techbook account to access Discovery Education’s dynamic digital content anywhere, anytime.

Discovery Education’s new Techbook app enables educators and students to access and interact with Discovery Education's rich digital textbook content in locations without Internet access. Through the app, users may download the interactive Techbook content they need– from an individual video to an entire concept – to iPad wherever and whenever they have an Internet connection.  Once downloaded, that content is available to students anywhere they take their device, 24 hours a day.

In addition, the Discovery Education Techbook App supports school administrators managing Internet bandwidth by negating the need for constant connectivity in the classroom.

“The new Discovery Education Techbook app provides access to dynamic digital content to all students with iPad and helps extend learning beyond the classroom,” said Emma Haygood, eighth grade physical science teacher at Berrien Springs Middle School. “Now, because I can have all the content my class needs to complete their work downloaded to devices before they leave school, I can give my students digital assignments to complete outside the classroom, regardless of their Internet access beyond our campus.”

The Discovery Education Science Techbook series, currently available for K-8 science and high school courses including Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, and Physics, offers students a multimodal digital learning environment that includes compelling video, digital simulations and explorations, virtual and hands-on labs, and an interactive glossary with animations and audio and video.

recent study, conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC, found that usage of the Discovery Education Science Techbook is associated with higher science achievement scores.  Discovery Education Science Techbook is built upon the 5E model of instruction, a non-linear curriculum pathway that promotes inquiry-based learning, enhances literacy and thinking skills, and improves student achievement through interactive digital lessons that bring science to life. The Techbook series is revolutionizing instruction by supporting multiple learning styles through interactive content that specifically appeals to digital learners and providing real-time updates that allow teachers to incorporate current events and cutting-edge thinking into their curricula.

To maximize the impact on student achievement and ensure the effective implementation of digital resources, Discovery Education includes intensive, customized professional development along with the Techbook series. Discovery Education Professional Development is designed to teach educators how to maximize the use of innovative digital tools that facilitate learning and empower them to integrate technology effectively and confidently into classroom instruction.

“School districts across the country are making great strides integrating rich digital content into core classroom instruction,” said Kelli Campbell, Senior Vice President, Discovery Education. “Through the Science Techbook iPad app, we hope to accelerate equitable access to digital instructional materials whether online or offline, at home, on a bus, or in the classroom. By empowering students with access to content that excites them, we expect kids to take more ownership of their learning facilitating deeper engagement and collaboration."
