— Online Destination, “Manufacture Your Future,” Spotlights Modern Manufacturing Careers for Middle and High School Students —

SILVER SPRING, Md. (May 28, 2014) – Alcoa Foundation, one of the largest corporate foundations in the US, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today the launch of “Manufacture Your Future,” a new online destination designed to inspire thousands of students in grades 6-12 to take the first step towards exploring and pursuing today’s manufacturing careers.

The program provides middle and high school educators, guidance counselors, students and families with hands-on resources that build excitement around post-secondary manufacturing career opportunities. Manufacture Your Future encourages the development of critical thinking skills through real-world application, and offers dynamic standards-based, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-focused lesson plans, a manufacturing career guide, family discussion starters and a Virtual Field Trip designed to give students an inside look at some of today’s most prominent manufacturing careers.

Educating students about careers in manufacturing is especially relevant knowing that, according to The Manufacturing Institute, more than one in seven U.S. private sector jobs depends on the U.S. manufacturing base. The sector supports millions of people who make things in America and a large number of employees in other sectors of the economy.

“As the manufacturing industry continues to evolve, it’s becoming increasingly important that we nurture a future workforce that is interested in pursuing careers in manufacturing, and that they are also equipped with the STEM skills necessary for these critical jobs,” said Karen Zilhaver, Middle School Educator from Seminole, Fla. “Manufacture Your Future allows me to do both of those things for my students; using these tools, I can build excitement and skills.”

“The manufacturing industry is an innovative place full of exciting potential,” said Esra Ozer, President, Alcoa Foundation. “However, we need a strong pipeline of talent to fill the increasing demand in the manufacturing industry. Programs like Manufacture Your Future help kick-start a student’s understanding of possible manufacturing careers. Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation are proud to help ignite that spark of interest.”

Manufacture Your Future’s comprehensive, cross-curricular lesson plans also look at the history of manufacturing and include STEM-based resources on robotics, designed to stimulate conversations between educators and students around potential manufacturing careers. Designed by Discovery Education’s curriculum experts, the site’s resources provide insights into the science behind the manufacturing design process. Family Discussion Starters extend the conversation beyond the classroom, giving parents a way to highlight the crucial role that manufacturing plays in day-to-day life. Educating families is an important goal of the program, given that according to a national survey by The Manufacturing Institute, less than 20 percent of Americans said that their parents or their school system encouraged them to pursue a career in manufacturing.

Virtual Career Guide and Virtual Field Trip

The program’s virtual career guide provides an additional layer of support, offering guidance counselors detailed, first-hand information about manufacturing careers – from welding to mechanical engineering –that also gives students a more holistic look at the industry’s wide-range of occupational options.

Manufacture Your Future will launch its first virtual field trip on National Manufacturing Day, October 3, 2014. Students will get an inside look at careers in advanced manufacturing through an interactive event hosted live from an Alcoa facility.

For more information on the program or to access the site’s free resources, visit: www.manufactureyourfuture.com.

— Data Illustrates Use of Science Techbook Accelerates Student Achievement in Science —

SILVER SPRING, Md., May 14, 2014 − A new study released today found that usage of Discovery Education’s digital science textbook is associated with higher science achievement scores in elementary school students. Specifically, the data suggests that the Discovery Education Science Techbook™ increases student science achievement and bolsters the effectiveness of teaching when educators integrate it into classroom instruction.

Conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC, the study reviewed results on the 2013 Science Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) for fourth grade students in York County, South Carolina. During the 2012-2013 school year, Rock Hill School District Three partnered with Discovery Education to pilot the Discovery Education Science Techbook, a digital textbook for their K-5 science curriculum. Included in the implementation was in-depth, customized professional development from Discovery Education’s professional development team, which supported elementary school educators as they integrated the Science Techbook into classroom instruction.

Key findings from the study include:

  • Fourth grade students whose teachers used Science Techbook for instruction scored six points higher on average on the 2013 Science PASS than fourth grade students whose teachers had not used Science Techbook for instruction.
  • Students in classrooms using Science Techbook were more likely to score at the “exemplary” performance level by exceeding grade level standards than students in classrooms not using Science Techbook.
  • 21 percent of students using the digital textbook scored at or above the exemplary level on the Science PASS, compared to 15 percent of students who were not using the digital textbook.

“This study shows that Discovery Education’s Techbook series has the power to advance achievement when used by talented educators who are deeply committed to student success and passionate about transforming the learning experience with digital media,” said Dr. Harriet Jaworowski, Associate Superintendent for Instruction and Accountability at Rock Hill School District Three. “We are proud to collaborate with Discovery Education to offer our teachers high-quality resources and professional development that ultimately results in students being authentically engaged in the learning process and prepared for successful futures.”

Discovery Education Science Techbook series is a complete digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks and features compelling video; interactive text; digital simulations and explorations; virtual and hands-on labs; and an interactive glossary with animations, audio and video. The series is available for K-8 science and high school courses including Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science and Physics. To support the effective integration of digital textbooks into classroom instruction, Discovery Education provides each educator using the Techbook customized, job-embedded professional development.

“The results of this study are a testament to the fact that when educators are empowered with dynamic digital content and robust professional development, they can create the authentic learning environments that inspire students and prepare them for life beyond the classroom,” said CEO of Discovery Education, Bill Goodwyn. “Discovery Education is proud to support educators with cutting-edge tools and resources that foster engaging learning experiences and meet students’ diverse instructional needs.”

Since 2004, Rock Hill Schools has partnered with Discovery Education to create authentic learning environments that build the critical thinking skills today’s students need for college, careers and citizenship. Students throughout the district currently use Discovery Education Streaming, a library of 100,000 digital assets aligned to state and national standards, as well as the Discovery Education Techbook series, a digital textbook solution which includes K-12 science and middle school social studies subjects.

— Winners from Maryland, California and Florida Awarded Funds to Expand Healthy Living Initiatives in Schools —

Silver Spring, Md. (May 12, 2014) – Sanford Health, WebMD and Discovery Education announced today the winners of the ‘fit 4 the classroom’ national sweepstakes, awarding educators with funds to expand health and wellness initiatives at their schools.  Chosen from thousands of entries across the country, Zakia Ashley, a teacher at Mary Ann Winterling Elementary School #150 in Baltimore, Md., was named the grand prize winner and awarded $5,000 for her classroom and $5,000 for the school.  Additionally, Jennifer Wright of Montara Elementary School in Barstow, Calif. and Johanna Rodriguez of Renaissance Charter School at Plantation in Plantation, Fla. were named second and third place winners and given $1,000 for their classroom and $1,000 for the school.

Rooted in the four pillars of fit – mood, move, food and recharge – fit 4 the classroom helps to promote healthy habits among students with dynamic, cross-curricular lesson plans and videos that spans across science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects aligned to national education standards. Lessons cover topics such as the effect of music on mood, and how sleep affects the body and brain. Techniques include using analytical and graphing skills to explore the concepts of potential and kinetic energy, connecting those ideas to athletic performance and living a healthy lifestyle.

fit 4 the classroom recognizes the critical role that schools and teachers play in promoting healthy habits for our students, while helping to expand critical health and wellness initiatives to achieve that goal,” said Tisha Edward, interim CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools. “We are grateful to Sanford Health, WebMD and Discovery Education for providing these valuable resources to our schools.”

Last year’s winners from Fairfield Elementary in Fairfield, Mont. used their award to fund a running program to keep students active at school.  To-date 70% of Fairfield students in grades K-6 have participated in the program by running a mile or more.

“We are very pleased with the overwhelming response to the second year of fit 4 the classroom and are grateful to our partners, Discovery Education and WebMD, for their continued cooperation to expand this valuable program across the country. As we continue to offer these resources, we hope that more educators will take advantage of this fun and straightforward method to incorporate the fit principles into their classrooms while still focusing on the critical STEM subjects,” said Neal Nachtigall, Director of Children's Health and Fitness Initiatives at Sanford Health.

Now in its second year, the ‘fit 4 the classroom’ program for elementary educators, students and their families promotes students’ ‘whole-body’ health and wellness. The program recognizes, as young children begin their educational journey, that elementary educators like Zakia Ashley, Jennifer Wright and Johanna Rodriguez not only have the opportunity to build the foundation for a child’s academic success, but also to provide an environment where children can develop good habits for a healthy lifestyle.
