– 2014 Discovery Educator Network Summer Institute Focuses on Strategies for Integrating Digital Resources into Classroom Instruction –

Silver Spring, Md. (July 23, 2014) – Discovery Education’s Discovery Educator Network (DEN) hosted 150 educators from across the U.S., Canada and United Kingdom for an immersive, week-long professional development experience. The six-day DEN Summer Institute (DENSI), held July 13-18 at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., focused on enhancing learning through the power of collaboration and educational technology.

DENSI 2014 featured a number of seminars and hands-on workshops designed to support educators as they use the latest technologies to create authentic digital learning environments that engage students and improve achievement. In addition, the DENSI provided an opportunity for participants to connect, collaborate and share resources, ideas and strategies for integrating digital resources into classroom instruction.

“I am honored to have been selected to participate in DENSI 2014. This experience has allowed me to learn from and connect with other enthusiastic educators who share a passion for incorporating digital resources in our students’ education,” said Jessi Anderson, a teacher at Lake Joy Elementary in Georgia’s Houston County Schools. “I am excited to inform my colleagues in Houston County Schools about these new, creative strategies and techniques for advancing student achievement, and to apply them in my classroom for the 2014-2015 school year.”

The prestigious summer learning opportunity is exclusive to educators recognized by Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, as STAR Discovery Educators. STAR Discovery Educators are active members of the DEN community and proven leaders in transforming teaching and learning. The DEN is the largest and most active community of educators who are passionate about teaching with technology and digital media, sharing resources, collaborating and networking. The DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events like the DENSI, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“I feel privileged to have been welcomed in to the professional learning community that is the DEN,” said Christine Terrey, headteacher at Harbour Primary School in New Haven, East Sussex. “I have met and networked with many teachers from all over the USA and Canada – sharing ideas, tips and ways forward to incorporate an even wider range of digital learning in to our curriculum and our teaching practice.”

During the DEN Summer Institute, educators heard from a variety of speakers, including Adam Bellow, Founder and President of eduTecher and eduClipper; Dr. Lodge McCammon, noted educational consultant specializing in curriculum-based music composition; Greg Siers, Director of Live Production and Technology at Discovery Communications; and Wyatt Channell, Executive Producer of Science Channel.

In addition to hearing from speakers, attendees participated in workshops led by the Discovery Education team and DEN Gurus about creating digital content and integrating mobile and web-based tools into instruction; collaborated with fellow educators on a variety of educational technology projects; and shared ideas and best practices with his/her peers.

“This exceptional group of educators selected to attend DENSI demonstrated their outstanding leadership and commitment to using the most innovative methods to enhance students’ learning and classroom experiences,” said Lance Rougeux, vice president of learning communities and instructional implementation for Discovery Education. “The skills and knowledge these educators have gained from this opportunity will increase their students’ engagement in their own learning, and better prepare them with the critical skills needed for college, careers and citizenship.”

After participating in the DEN Summer Institute, educators will return to their schools in the fall with numerous classroom-ready multimedia projects as well as new strategies and techniques to integrate digital resources into curriculum and instruction to transform teaching and learning.

– Expanded Access to Digital Content and New Professional Development Program Cultivating Teacher-Leaders Supports District Effort to Create Culture of Academic Excellence  –

Silver Spring, Md. (July 10, 2014) Texas’ Burkburnett Independent School District today announced a deepening of its partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. In the latest phase of this nine-year relationship, the district is expanding access to Discovery Education’s digital content for all students in the coming school year.  In addition, the school system is embarking on a new comprehensive professional development program supporting teacher-leaders as they serve as change agents powering the district’s digital transition.

As part of Burkburnett ISD’s effort to create digital learning environments in each classroom, this coming school year the district is providing all students and teachers iPads.  This effort is guided by a group of district stakeholders called Voices Effectively Collaborating on Technology and Teaching with Ongoing Reflection (VECTTOR). Comprised of teachers, administrators, technology department staff, parents, students and community members, VECTTOR ensures the latest digital tools and resources are being effectively implemented to accelerate learning across the district.

Discovery Education is also supporting district efforts to accelerate learning in 21st-century classrooms. As part of its expanded partnership with Burkburnett ISD, students district-wide will, in the coming school year, enjoy access to Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital library of over 150,000 learning objects aligned to state and national standards. Students in grades 7 and 8 are already using the award-winning Discovery Education Science Techbook™ series, which includes compelling video, digital simulations and explorations, virtual and hands-on labs, and an interactive glossary with animations and audio and video.

In addition, Burkburnett ISD educators are now participating in Discovery Education’s recently launched Digital Leader Corps. A new multi-year professional development program, Digital Leader Corps nurtures a network of teacher-leaders prepared to design and implement successful and innovative teaching strategies that can be shared with their peers.

Through Digital Leader Corps, Discovery Education is helping the school system build the capacity of district teacher-leaders to effectively integrate digital content into instruction and prepare students to be globally competitive, 21st-century citizens. Four teacher-leaders and a principal at each of the district’s five campuses are engaging in this intensive professional learning model.

Featuring a unique combination of professional learning, pedagogy and tools, Digital Leader Corps offers participating educators proven strategies for integrating educational technologies and digital media into classroom instruction. A new innovation included in the model is educator created, student-centered Learning Labs. In these labs, teachers bring to life new teaching strategies, and practice and adapt their skills in a classroom setting before sharing their successes broadly with their colleagues. The Digital Leader Corps program provides teachers with continuous customized, job-embedded consultation throughout the process with on-going modeling, coaching and feedback from Discovery Education experts in the pre-planning, stakeholder communications and implementation phases.

“At Burkburnett ISD our goal is to help all students succeed at each grade level and graduate from high school well equipped for the next stage of their educational journey,” said Danny Taylor, superintendent, Burkburnett ISD.  “To achieve this goal, students need access to engaging, high quality digital content and educators need sustained, job-embedded professional development that helps them maximize new educational technologies.  We are excited to expand our partnership with Discovery Education to bring both of these critical elements to our digital transition plans.”

The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will also continue supporting Burkburnett ISD educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“We are excited to deepen our relationship with Burkburnett ISD,” said Brett Felten, director, Discovery Education. “Superintendent Taylor and his team share Discovery Education’s vision for combining dynamic digital content and sustained professional development to create the engaging learning environments our students need and deserve.  We commend the district’s leadership for providing these critical resources, and look forward to continuing this great partnership.”

— Discovery Educator Network’s “Summer School” will Provide Educators with New Strategies for Integrating Digital Content into Instruction Next School Year —

Silver Spring, Md. (June 30, 2014) – Discovery Education invites all educators across North America to get back in gear for the new school year and avoid the “summer slide” with the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) Summer School. Launching August 1, this month-long initiative will provide educators with new tactics and strategies for transforming teaching and learning with digital content and educational technologies. Supported by Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, the DEN is one of the largest and most active communities of tech-savvy educators passionate about teaching with digital media, sharing resources, collaborating and networking.

Throughout the month of August, each day of the week will be dedicated to introducing new digital tools and resources educators can use to create authentic, engaging digital learning environments for students. Every Monday, educators can discover the creative and effective ways their peers have been implementing 21st century technology through Spotlight on Strategies (SOS), a weekly blog series that features simple integration strategies for using digital media.  Teachers and administrators are also invited to join the Discovery Education Summer School webinars each Monday at 7:00pm EST, which will explore in greater depth the topics covered in the SOS blog series.  Interested educators may register for the webinars by visiting dlc.com/desswebinar.

Each Tuesday, educators will learn through a series of insightful presentations, how to maximize the impact of Discovery Education’s full suite of digital solutions in the classroom. These presentations, conducted by the experts from the organization’s Support team, will highlight the latest content, features and resources now available in Discovery Education products and services.

On Wednesdays, the Discovery Education team will highlight the DEN's community programs, which connect educators with their most valuable resource – their peers in the education field.  The DEN community programs allow members to stay active all year long and collaborate with one another through social media channels, engaging reading materials, podcasts, and radio programs.

“Throwback Thursdays” will highlight the DEN team’s favorite archived events, allowing participants to tune in to the DEN’s flagship professional development events such as the semi-annual VirtCon and the annual DEN Summer Institute (DENSI).

Fridays will feature a “Digital Challenge,” encouraging educators to dive into Discovery Education’s digital content offerings. Through a series of five steps that include videos and step-by-step guides, educators will learn how to build effective learning experiences for students that utilize the very best resources and strategies from Discovery Education. Participants will see how they can use Discovery Education resources as an integral part of their daily lessons, differentiate instruction with digital media, and develop an understanding of the resources available for students.

“I’m looking forward to spending the month of August with the DEN and to showing my students that learning doesn’t have to end on the last day of school,” said Dacia Jones, Area Instructional Facilitator, Durham Public Schools. “I plan to connect virtually with other dedicated educators and to gain valuable insight on how I can continue to evolve my classroom practice through the thoughtful integration of digital content.”

A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration. As one of the largest professional education learning communities, the DEN has impacted more than one million educators worldwide. In 2011, researchers from the Harvard Graduate School of Education conducted a study of the DEN to determine how it has impacted educators’ professional development and their use of technology in their work, finding that 90% of study respondents believed their participation in the DEN had tremendously or very much supported their professional growth.

“The summer is a crucial learning period for both students and educators; we are thrilled to provide a valuable forum for educators who are eager to build their skills and create dynamic digital learning environments for their students,” said Lance Rougeux, vice president of learning communities at Discovery Education. “The DEN is committed to connecting educators with their peers, helping them to meaningfully integrate digital content into everyday classroom activities, and to ultimately advance student achievement.”
