Offers Students Grades 6-12 a Behind the Scenes Look Into World of Advanced Manufacturing

SILVER SPRING, Md. (September 30, 2014) Alcoa Foundation, one of the largest corporate foundations in the U.S., and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, will celebrate National Manufacturing Day on October 3, 2014, with an interactive virtual field trip. The Manufacture Your Future LIVE Virtual Field Trip will be hosted from an Alcoa facility as part of Alcoa Foundation and Discovery Education’s overall “Manufacture Your Future” program, which provides middle and high school students with an inside look at careers in advanced manufacturing.

The Manufacture Your Future LIVE Virtual Field Trip will occur at a high-tech aluminum manufacturing facility, which has produced lightweight metal and other materials for every American space vehicle, helping to make many milestones possible, including the first moon landing. During the Virtual Field Trip, students will have the exclusive opportunity to tour Alcoa’s Davenport facility to see how products for major aircrafts are manufactured, including the wings of Air Force One. The tour will also showcase the company’s new revolutionary Auto Treatment Line, which enables mass production of aluminum for cars—a growing trend in reducing vehicle weight for increased fuel efficiency.

“Giving students the opportunity to look inside a facility makes manufacturing come to life,” said Mark Case, teacher at Southern Guilford High School, Guilford County Schools, NC. “An event like this creates a stronger impression than getting the information from a textbook. Students can see how information we provide in the classroom translates into a career path.”

“According to The Manufacturing Institute, more than one in seven U.S. private sector jobs depend on the U.S. manufacturing base,” said Esra Ozer, President, Alcoa Foundation.  “We are thrilled to showcase several of these jobs, which are held by talented members of Alcoa’s Davenport team — a Metallurgical Engineer, Electrical Engineer and Process Specialist.  Their passion and enthusiasm for their manufacturing careers will be inspiring for tomorrow’s workforce.”

In addition to the virtual field trip, Alcoa Foundation and Discovery Education’s Manufacture Your Future program provides middle and high school educators, guidance counselors, students and families with a comprehensive online site that includes hands-on resources to build excitement around post-secondary manufacturing career opportunities. Manufacture Your Future encourages the development of critical thinking skills through real-world application, offers dynamic standards-based, Science Technology Engineering and Math-focused lesson plans, career guides, family discussion starters and other online resources that provide insight into today’s advanced manufacturing careers and highlight the crucial role that manufacturing plays in day-to-day life. Hope Street Group, The Manufacturing Institute, and SME Education Foundation provided expertise.

– Impact Study Reveals Together Counts™ Program Significantly Improves Student Understanding About Importance of Physical Activity, Nutrition and Living a Balanced Lifestyle –

Silver Spring, Md. (September 9, 2014) – The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), a CEO-led organization driving a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce childhood obesity, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today the back-to-school launch of the Together Counts™ program. Established in 2009 with the launch of the first ever Energy Balance curriculum in 2010, the Together Counts program is a comprehensive initiative designed to positively impact students to live active and healthy lives, and to understand key concepts of balancing food intake with exercise for energy balance.

The fall 2014 program incorporates updated resources and incentives, giving educators and students across the country access to state-of-the-art curriculum and activities, and the chance to win more than $75,000 in prizes for their schools. These initiatives include:

  • Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes: Administrators, teachers, parents and community members can enter this year’s Sweepstakes for a chance to win one of two grand prizes for their school, including $30,000 in cash and sporting goods and two new playgrounds from Playworld Systems, Inc., a leading manufacturer of imaginative playground and fitness equipment, valued at $15,500 each. The playgrounds feature the company’s new Unity Dome, which takes the decades old geodesic dome and makes it meaningful and relevant to 21st century children. The various activities, including sensory panels, and levels of challenge allow every child to be a part of the play. One of the grand prizes will be awarded to a school that qualifies for Title I funding to jumpstart the school’s healthy transformation.

  • Smart From The Start Awards: The Smart from the Start Awards are designed to encourage preschool teachers to create practical, long-term improvements in nutrition and physical activity at their preschools to promote healthy habits at a young age. The grand prize winner will be awarded $20,000, while 10 runner-up participants will win $2,500 plus a prize pack of books. Smart from the Start is part of a commitment made to the Clinton Global Initiative. Through the National PTA, additional Pre-K schools, including Head Start programs will be funded this fall.

  • Energy Balance Curriculum: To help educators and families teach students about the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle, TogetherCounts.com is providing schools and families with free tools that promote energy-balanced lives. This online curriculum, Energy Balance 101, features standards-aligned lesson plans for grades 3-5 that bring to life the concept of Energy Balance: the balance of calories consumed (Energy In) with calories burned (Energy Out). New resources included in this year’s curriculum include interactive lesson plans and teacher-to-teacher guides.

  •  New Pre-K Portal:  SmartStartPreK.com is a new Together Counts portal designed especially to provide parents and educators of pre-school aged children with age-appropriate content and hands-on activities to teach the importance of a balanced lifestyle. Energy Balance Pre-K, the central curriculum for the initiative, provides non-sequential activities that align to a range of national education standards and government programs including NAEYC, Head Start, WIC, SNAP-Ed, SHAPE America, EFNEP, HealthierUS Schools Challenge and CACFP.

Through TogetherCounts.com, schools and families nationwide gain free access to resources that help to build healthy environments and reduce childhood obesity. Results of a spring 2014 impact study show that students who engaged in the program’s Energy Balance 101 curriculum experienced increased understanding of the balance between food intake and physical activity. Further, data revealed students exposed to the energy balance curriculum added one or more physical activities per week to their routine while also making healthier nutrition choices. Additionally, more than 90% of educators who implemented the curriculum in their classroom felt it made an impact and their students had a better understanding of key concepts.

“Together Counts is a fantastic program that engages students in easy-to-understand concepts of energy balance that help them not only comprehend the importance of maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle, but also take the necessary steps to adopt lifelong healthy habits,” said Jessica Anderson, teacher at Lake Joy Elementary, Houston County Schools. “I am excited to incorporate this curriculum in my classroom this school year and also enter my school in the Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes.”

“We are thankful for all the teachers and parents who recognize the importance of energy balance education and are incredibly proud of all we have accomplished together over the past five years,” said Lisa Gable, President of HWCF.  “When we launched in 2009, we could not have predicted the impact we would have in families and schools all over the country. We look forward to the results of our new and improved programming and are committed to develop even more creative ways to teach children about active, healthy living.”

— Beginning today, Constitution Day, “Of the People” launches its second year of interactive experiences for students on topics such as civics, history, STEM and more —

SILVER SPRING, Md. [September 17, 2014] – The White House and Discovery Education announced today the expansion of the popular “Of the People: Live from the White House” virtual field trip series. Offering upper elementary, middle and high school students unique access to White House and government officials as well as subject matter experts, Of the People will bring a series of 30-minute virtual events hosted by a student and broadcast live from the White House and other special locations to classrooms nationwide. The series, which launched last year, will build upon its success for the 2014-2015 school year with topics such as civics, history, STEM and more. The first virtual field trip will commemorate Constitution Day today at 1pm ET/10 am PT.

As part of the Constitution Day observance, students will take a virtual journey through the National Archives with student host Adalia Jimenez, an 11th grader from James Hubert Blake High School in Maryland’s Montgomery County Public Schools.  During this one-of-a-kind experience, Miss Jimenez will interview the Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero, and ask him questions (both her own and those submitted by students) about the National Archives and its contents, as well as his role. Students will investigate how our nation’s important documents have shaped the American government and impacted the lives of millions of people.  Students will also hear from a historian at the National Archives who will model a document analysis strategy with the Constitution, demonstrating the skills needed to read, write and think like a scholar.  This virtual field trip allows students to experience history and explore how important documents have shaped the country, their communities and their own families.

These unique virtual field trips take students beyond the walls of their classroom to places that they would not normally get to experience. Each installment of the virtual field trip series reinforces critical learning concepts outlined in their subject curriculum.

All installments in this series and archives will be available on Discovery Education’s website at DiscoveryEducation.com and will be supported with digital video and other learning tools to support student engagement.

“The expansion of Discovery Education’s White House webinar series provides students in our district and nationwide unique classroom experiences,” said Dr. Heath Morrison, Superintendent, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. “Through engaging and relevant content, this series reinforces the connection between students’ education and real-world careers and opportunities, while strengthening the everyday critical-thinking skills needed for success inside and outside the classroom.”

“We’re so thrilled that the White House is able to work with Discovery Education on this project,” said Eric Waldo, Executive Director of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative to inspire every student in America to complete their education past high school. “The ‘Of the People’ series gives students the chance to engage directly with challenging and exciting material. And it’s a wonderful opportunity to use technology to connect directly with young people around the country and share the rich history of the White House.”

“It is an honor to extend and expand our relationship with the White House to deliver an even greater range of topics in the ‘Of the People’ virtual field trip series to classrooms across America,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education.  “Through these one-of-a-kind virtual events, we are able to take students beyond the classroom and provide them with experiential learning opportunities that are curriculum-aligned and help broaden students’ understanding of highlighted topics.”

Last year’s “Of the People” series provided students and educators with a behind-the-scenes look at the White House, its administration and events. Virtual field trip webinars addressed the history of the White House and its art, coverage of the Science Fair and the importance of mentorships, and a cultural exchange featuring First Lady Michelle Obama in China.

Customized Education Activities, Once-In-A-Lifetime Teacher Professional Development Program in Poland and Exclusive Virtual Field Trip will be Part of Auschwitz: The Past is Present Initiative

Los Angeles, Sept. 16, 2014 — USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education is partnering with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, on education components of Auschwitz: The Past is Present, a global communications and education program that will support the official observance of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, 2015. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and the International Auschwitz Council are the organizers of the official commemoration event.

A major component of the education initiative of Auschwitz: The Past is Present will include four new activities on the Institute’s free IWitness online educational platform that provides access to more than 1,300 testimonies from survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides. The activities will teach students about the past and encourage them to reflect on how their actions can help make the world a better place. In addition to appearing at iwitness.usc.edu on September 15, 2014, IWitness will also be accessible on pastispresentauschwitz.com later in the fall. Later this year, Discovery Education will also integrate content into its official website, discoveryeducation.com, its digital textbook, Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook™ and its comprehensive digital content service, Discovery Education Streaming for educators to incorporate into instruction.

Activities include:

  • Growing up ‘Behind the Barbed Wire’ of Auschwitz – In this Information Quest activity, students will consider what life was like for children in Auschwitz by studying the iconic image of the children standing behind the barbed wire fence following the liberation of Auschwitz and listening to testimonies of some of the children in the photo.
  • Art in the Face of Death – This activity features visual art, poetry and music that was created during and in response to the Auschwitz experience. Students will develop their understanding of the day-to-day life in Auschwitz and the significance of art in the lives of some survivors, as they construct their own works of art.
  • Arrival at Auschwitz – Images and Individual Experiences – In this Mini Quest activity, students will consider the personal experiences of those who arrived on the ramp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. They will explore images from the Auschwitz Album, showing the arrival of Hungarian Jewish men, women and children in 1944, as well as listen to survivors who endured a similar process.
  • Auschwitz – Inner Strength, Outward Resistance – A Mini Quest activity that provides students with an opportunity to consider the meaning of resistance, with special attention paid to cultural and spiritual resistance and its implications for personal identity and survival at Auschwitz.
  • In all, 16 new activities based on testimony from survivors and witnesses of Auschwitz will be available in IWitness in the coming months leading up to the anniversary of the camp’s liberation.

Additionally, USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education will provide a unique professional development opportunity for 25 educators who support grades 5-12.  USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education are launching the Auschwitz: The Past is Present ITeach Professional Development contest to help select the educators who will participate in this program.  Selected educators will participate in a four-day workshop called Auschwitz: The Past is Present ITeach Professional Development. The experience will start in Warsaw at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews and conclude with the official ceremonies at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

This opportunity will encourage teachers to develop digital and media literacies using the compelling, primary-source interviews contained in the Institute’s Visual History Archive, a collection of more than 53,000 audiovisual testimonies from survivors and witnesses to the Holocaust and other genocides.

The trip promises to deepen teachers’ understanding of the history and continued importance of preserving the historic German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, as well as the testimonies of those who survived the atrocities that occurred there during World War II.

The contest starts on September 15 and closes on October 3.  For more information, visit http://iwitness.usc.edu/SFI/70Auschwitz/.  To provide students a deeper understanding of the continued importance of the Holocaust, Discovery Education, in cooperation with USC Shoah Foundation, will bring the 70th anniversary commemoration directly to the classroom through an exclusive Virtual Field Trip.   Available to schools across the United States in the spring of 2015, the Virtual Field Trip will provide students with firsthand accounts from survivors and witnesses returning to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and motivate them to engage in a meaningful dialogue about history and its relevance today.

By working together on this important project, USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education are filling an ever-present need to keep history alive for generations to come. Interacting with testimony as a primary source in IWitness connects young people with voices from the past in a profound and meaningful way.

“It’s important for us to get involved so we can assure survivors we are carrying on their legacy,” said Dr. Kori Street, USC Shoah Foundation director of education. “We will, with integrity, use their stories for education in perpetuity. We’re seeing all around the world that there are fewer and fewer survivors who can speak to students, so our testimonies will become that educational window into those stories.”

“Discovery Education is pleased to partner with the USC Shoah Foundation on this important project,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education. “This powerful combination of digital content and intense professional development creates a unique opportunity for both educators and students to interact directly with primary sources, see the past through the eyes of others, and gain perspective on historical events and their own lives.”

— “Epic Story” Gives Students the Opportunity to Learn from a Science Channel Producer and Use Cutting-Edge Digital Tools to Empower Them to Create and Present Their Own Stories —

Silver Spring, Md. (September 4, 2014) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, and Science Channel, the network that dares to question everything, announced today the launch of Epic Story. This online program brings incredible network programming, accomplished producers and student-created content together to provide students with tools that build independent learning skills and teach the art of storytelling. Broken into three parts to engage students through the fall term, Epic Story offers an interactive virtual field trip and hands-on activities that promote research, writing and presentation skills while also reinforcing critical concepts key to achieving state standards.

During the first phase of the program, “Pick One,” students across the country are invited to log in to their Discovery Education accounts to view exclusive clips from Science Channel series including: Monster Bug Wars, Outrageous Acts of Science and How the Universe Works. Students are encouraged to vote for their favorite clip to determine the guest executive producer for an Epic Virtual Field Trip. The voting period will occur from September 8th – October 3rd.

The executive producer of the winning clip will participate in phase two, “Hear One,” and be featured during Discovery Education’s Epic Virtual Field Trip taking place at Discovery Communication’s global headquarters on October 15th. During the virtual field trip, the producer will provide students with behind-the-scenes knowledge about the production process for a major network show and exclusive tips that will help them excel in creating their own stories. Students will be able to ask questions and speak directly with the producer in real-time.

Additionally, the virtual field trip will highlight important elements of great storytelling using Discovery Education’s Board Builder, an exciting digital tool that allows users to create multimedia stories that include text, photos and video.

“Discovery Education’s interactive online programs inspire students to learn in ways that traditional educational resources simply cannot,” said Monique Liles, sixth grade teacher at Babb Middle School, Clayton County Schools, GA. “Epic Story is a fantastic resource that provides students with the tools they need to learn how to effectively tell a story and communicate their ideas to others.”

Students will then incorporate skills learned from their experience with the virtual field trip to tell their own story in the third phase of Epic Story, “Tell One.” By utilizing Discovery Education’s Board Builder tool, students will create a Board telling their story which represents themselves including their interests, work, hobbies, community, class and family. Each Epic Story participant will receive an Epic Story Certificate of Participation and an Epic Story Screen Saver. Selected student Boards will be featured on the Discovery Student Network Blog.

“Discovery Education is committed to providing students access to compelling content that is both educational and engaging, and will prepare them with the necessary critical thinking skills needed for their future,” said Scott Kinney, senior vice president, Discovery Education. “With Epic Story, we hope to excite students through our interactive tools and live virtual events, and empower them to share their unique story.”

Wyatt Channell, executive producer of Science Channel says, “I couldn’t be more excited to support this project by sharing some of my experiences overseeing these films. Science documentaries are a wondrous combination of artistic expression and reverence for the remarkable Universe we inhabit. Science Channel is a great place for compelling content that feeds our natural curiosity.”

– Discovery Education in the UK Will Offer Schools Powerful, Relevant and Timely Digital Services to Accelerate Student Learning –

Silver Spring, Md. (September 2, 2014)Espresso Education, the leading provider of primary school digital education content, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of curriculum-aligned digital content and professional development for K-12, announced today that they will join together under the Discovery Education name. The name change follows Discovery Education’s acquisition of UK market leader Espresso Group Ltd. Last year, Discovery Education acquired the company as part of its ongoing effort to speed the transition from static textbooks to dynamic digital content around the world.

“I am excited to hear that Espresso Education is to further develop its new relationship with Discovery Education and become Discovery Education,” said Christine Terrey, headteacher at Harbour Primary School in Newhaven, East Sussex. “I am also very lucky to have experienced first-hand the incredible commitment that Discovery Education has to the professional development of its teachers through my attendance at the Discovery Educator Network Summer Institute this July. I look forward to the significant impact that Discovery Education will be able to make in schools in the UK, especially mine!”

Effective immediately, Espresso Education will assume the Discovery Education name, with the following changes taking effect as the two companies move forward with integration of their high-quality digital resources and professional development services:

  • Espresso Primary is now Discovery Education Espresso: Teachers currently using Espresso’s services can look forward to accessing a wider range of high-quality tools and resources they can utilize to enrich curriculum delivery and inspire pupils. Discovery Education Espresso now includes more content created in response to teacher requests, which will help educators teach new objectives in the National Curriculum. Several brand new modules are available for the upcoming school year, including modules on online safety to help educators implement the new Computing curriculum, Mayan history for the History curriculum, and spelling and traditional tales for English.

  • Espresso CPD offerings are now Discovery Education Professional Development: Discovery Education’s professional development offerings in the UK are taking the best of Espresso’s 13 years of successful professional development partnerships with schools across the UK, and combining them with Discovery Education’s comprehensive, customized professional development to create even more extensive offerings for educators. Professional development will be more widely available, offered via more accessible routes and focused on broader educational/leadership/school themes – ultimately offering better value to schools. Discovery Education will provide a more robust and wider range of professional development, from half-day skills training to longer multi-day strategic programmes, which offer support at all levels from vision planning through to implementation.

In addition, Discovery Education will offer a spectrum of no-cost resources and professional learning opportunities to schools, teachers and pupils. Launching in the Autumn term, Discovery Education will be offering Curriculum Leadership Labs designed to address technology transformation in the context of leadership, literacy, maths and computing at the primary level. Additionally, “Days of Discovery” will be offered to local authorities with curriculum themes tailored to the needs of schools. Teachers will also now have access to an even more frequent and broader calendar of webinar events to give teachers the ability to tune-in to professional learning that is relevant to their classroom and their individual needs. A robust collection of lesson plans and related content on key topics will be available on an ongoing basis, such as the Espresso Coding Summer Camp that delivered valuable resources to support the implementation of the new coding curriculum.

“With Espresso Education rebranding to Discovery Education, we are bringing together the most trusted digital education companies in the U.S. and the UK, offering educators more high-quality content, more professional development, and more value,” said James Rosenstock, president, Discovery Education International. “Through the combination of Discovery Education’s unparalleled digital content and professional development, and Espresso’s strong content, services and partnerships with UK schools, we will continue to provide engaging and relevant products and services that positively impact pupil understanding and achievement.”

“Espresso has a proud heritage of serving UK schools since 1998.  From our origins as a start –up we have worked hard to deliver the best content and professional development support to schools,” said Lewis Bronze, founder of Espresso Education and Director of Content at Discovery Education in the UK. “Now, as part of Discovery Education, we are delighted that we will be able to deliver more best-in-class services and support.  We are proud to be bringing the Discovery Education name to the UK and can promise our school partners that great things lie ahead.”
