— Texas Demonstrates Continued Nationwide Shift to Digital Learning with Adoption of Interactive Social Studies Digital Textbook —

SILVER SPRING, Md., [January 29, 2015] – Following a rigorous evaluation, the Texas State Board of Education has approved the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook™ for statewide use as a core instructional resource through its state adoption process.  Discovery Education is the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms nationwide. More than 1,000,000 students across the U.S. and Canada currently have access to the Discovery Education Techbook series, and over 7,000 schools in Texas have already integrated Discovery Education services into classroom instruction.

The Texas State Board of Education adopted all middle and high school Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook courses, including World Geography & Cultures for Grade 6, as well as U.S. History for Grade 8 and high school. School districts across Texas now have the option to implement the Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook, a fully interactive digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks and features standards-based digital content that strengthens literacy, critical thinking and citizenship skills. Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook is a complete digital solution that has been built from the ground-up to be fully aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and English Language Proficiency standards.

The Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook is the second Techbook to be adopted by the Texas State Board of Education as a core instructional resource.  In 2014, the Texas State Board of Education approved the Discovery Education Science Techbook as a core instructional resource for elementary, middle, and high school science courses through the state adoption process.

“The Social Studies Techbook’s rich multimedia resources and wide variety of activities make Social Studies lessons more interesting and exciting to students,” said Yolanda M. Rey, Ph.D., Executive Director, Texas ASCD. “In addition, having model lessons, primary and secondary source documents, interactive tools and more all in one place saves educators a tremendous amount of time, allowing them to concentrate on their primary job: teaching.”

The Social Studies Techbook series uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing and problem solving skills that students can apply in academics and as citizens. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps and informational texts. Social Studies Techbook supports English language learners through helpful features such as hundreds of Spanish language video segments, a multimodal interactive glossary with definitions in Spanish, and a Spanish reading path with text-to-voice capability.

Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook is built upon the 5E model of instruction, a non-linear curriculum pathway that promotes inquiry-based learning, enhances literacy and thinking skills, and improves student achievement through interactive digital lessons that bring history to life. The Techbook series is transforming instruction with interactive content that specifically appeals to digital learners and real-time updates that allow teachers to incorporate current events and cutting-edge thinking into their curricula. In addition, Techbooks offer built-in assessments that measure students’ progress and support individualized classroom instruction. Aligned to state standards, the Techbook series creates learning environments that promote collaboration, creativity and participatory learning.

Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook is cloud-based and works on any platform-iPads, tablets, mobile devices, laptops, or desktops. In addition, the model lessons embedded throughout the Techbook provide teaching strategies for different classroom configurations– whether whole group, small group, or 1:1. Techbooks are also a substantially less expensive option per student than a traditional textbook, with additional savings derived from a lack of textbook replacement and inventory costs. Also available for download at the App Store in the U.S. and Canada at no cost is the Discovery Education Techbook app™. Through the app, users may download the interactive Techbook content they need — from an individual video to an entire concept — to their iPad when they have an internet connection. Once downloaded, that content is available to students, anywhere, anytime even without any internet connection.

Discovery Education understands that teacher engagement is critical to implementing successful learning initiatives.  Therefore, all Techbooks include research-based professional development that supports educators as they integrate new digital content and resources into classroom instruction. The Discovery Educator Network (DEN), a global community of education professionals, further connects teachers and administrators around the world with social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events that inspire innovation and facilitates idea sharing.

“Discovery Education applauds the Texas State Board of Education’s adoption of the Social Studies Techbook for statewide use,” said Brett Felten, director at Discovery Education. “Across the state, educators are working hard to meet the educational needs of all students.  We look forward to continuing to support Texas educators’ efforts with engaging digital resources like the Social Studies Techbook, and effective, research based professional development.”

SILVER SPRING, Md. [January 23, 2015] – On Thursday, January 29, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms, are partnering to present a unique distance learning opportunity for students across the globe. At the eighth annual “Reading Discovery Program” held at Texas A&M University, former First Lady Barbara Bush will speak about the importance of literacy, read excerpts from an award-winning book about Mount Rushmore, and answer students’ questions from around the world via interactive video conference.

For the first time in the history of the program, students will not just read text on the pages of a paper book, but will experience that book coming to life through computer-generated technology. Discovery Education’s Senior Director Hall Davidson will lead participants in a demonstration of this augmented reality technology, which allows students to overlay digital information, such as engaging videos, audio and graphics, on any image being viewed through a device, such as a smartphone. Elementary students from Houston Independent School District and Bryan Independent School District will share the content they have created to enhance the book about Mount Rushmore using augmented reality technology.

— Next Generation of Scientific Thinkers Invited to Compete for $25,000 in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge —

— During Unique Summer Mentorship, 3M Scientists Will Support Student Finalists in Developing Innovative Solutions for Everyday Life —

Silver Spring, Md. and St. Paul, Minn. (January 15, 2015) – Everyday life is full of everyday issues and the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge calls on the next generation of great scientists to dream the ideas that will change the way people live for the better.

Discovery Education and 3M are proud to announce the opening of the 17th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier science competition for students in grades 5-8.  Through the program, students have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work closely with a 3M Scientist Mentor, compete for $25,000, and earn the title of “America's Top Young Scientist.”

The Challenge rewards students who use their science acumen and innovative thinking to solve these everyday problems. Sahil Doshi, who won last year for his battery cell invention, entered the contest because he loves science and he wanted to know others who shared similar interests.

“Participating in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and working alongside my incredible, supportive 3M Scientist Mentor has opened up opportunities that I never had before and has also taught me valuable lessons about using technology and innovation to make a difference in the world,” Doshi said.

“Ideas know no limit, and we are thrilled to support this program and help students push boundaries to explore what is possible. Science and imagination are exactly what 3M uses to solve the world’s everyday problems,” said Jesse Singh, senior vice president for marketing and sales at 3M.

Any student in grades 5-8 can enter the contest by creating a one to two-minute video communicating the science behind a possible solution to an everyday problem.

Video entries will be evaluated based on their creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation. Ten finalists will then be chosen to participate in an exclusive mentorship program where they will work closely with a 3M scientist. During the program, finalists will be challenged to develop an innovation that positively impacts them, their family, their community or the global population. The students will meet virtually with their mentors and will receive additional resources and support from 3M and Discovery Education. Each finalist will also receive a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn., to compete at the final event in October 2015.

All video entries must be submitted online at www.youngscientistchallenge.com no later than April 21, 2015. Videos will not be judged on production skills and may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital cameras.

Since its inception, the Young Scientist Challenge has awarded more than $600,000 in student scholarships and prizes, paired students with world-renowned scientists to give them real-world insights and delivered much-needed science resources to millions of students, teachers and families across the country. Winners have gone on to speak in front of members of Congress, meet the President of the United States, work with the nation's top scientists and pursue academic careers in science.

“This one-of-a-kind program and partnership between Discovery Education and 3M has inspired thousands of students across the country, giving them the valuable opportunity to hone the critical skills they need for college and career success,” said Godfrey Rangasammy, PreK-12 Science Curriculum Supervisor at Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland. “The Young Scientist Challenge not only encourages our next generation to solve the challenges of tomorrow, but this competition also highlights the incredible possibilities for today’s young minds to develop breakthrough creations that will change the future and revolutionize the way we live our lives every day.”
