— Elementary Schools in Kentucky and North Carolina Win $30,000 in Grants, New Playground Equipment to Enhance School and Community Wellness–

–Connecticut School Rewarded with $20,000 for Creating Innovative Program Designed to Combat Childhood Obesity–

Silver Spring, Md. (April 30, 2015) – The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), a CEO-led coalition of more than 275 organizations dedicated to helping families and schools fight childhood obesity, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today the winners of the 2015 Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes and Smart from the Start Awards, annually offered incentive programs from Together Counts™. Designed to encourage students to live active and healthy lives, these programs aim to increase the impact of health and wellness programs both in and out of school, and will ultimately award more than $100,000 in prizes to deserving schools across the nation.

The following schools have been chosen as this year’s grand prize winners:

Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes:
Chosen from nearly 400,000 entries nationwide, ArtSpace Charter School in Swannanoa, N.C., and Southside Elementary School of Public Schools of Robeson County in Nortonville, Ky., have been selected as the grand prize winners of this year’s Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes. Acknowledging the importance of supporting low-income schools, each year the sweepstakes selects a Title I school as one of the two grand prize winners. This year, the sweepstakes proudly recognizes both ArtSpace Charter School and Southside Elementary School as Title I grand prize winners. As grand prize winners, each school will receive $30,000 in grant funding, sporting goods equipment and a new playground (valued at $15,500) from Playworld, a leading playground equipment and surfacing manufacturer committed to saving outdoor unstructured play. The sweepstakes commends these schools for their commitment to educating students on the importance of living active, healthy lives.

“ArtSpace is a charter school and, in North Carolina, that means we don’t receive funding for our facilities. Renovating and improving our recreational facilities has been high on the list every year, but it keeps getting bumped down as other issues take priority,” said Josh Batenhorst, Enterprise and Development Manager, Artspace Charter School. “This Playground Makeover will ensure that our students have access to a great play facility where they can exercise as they learn and play! We know our students are going to be thrilled to have the new equipment and we are so happy to have been chosen as a winner!”

“We are ecstatic that Southside Elementary is the winner of the Healthy Playground Makeover Sweepstakes!” said Principal Millie Seiber of Public Schools of Robeson County’s Southside Elementary School. “Winning means that our faculty and staff can expand our commitment to students of providing an environment that promotes lifelong health and physical activity.”

Smart from the Start Awards:
The Smart from the Start Awards encourages early childhood educators to design and implement wellness initiatives in their preschool classrooms. This year, Together Counts has named New Beginnings Family Academy, a public charter school in Bridgeport, Conn., as the 2015 grand prize winner. The school will receive a $20,000 grant.

New Beginnings Family Academy’s development director, Ms. Quentin Ball, developed an innovative three-year program designed to increase students’ understanding of nutrition and exercise concepts. Entitled Ready, Set, Learn!, the program engages students in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, encourages students to eat an additional serving of fresh fruits and vegetables, and emphasizes Energy Balance – a core concept in the Together Counts curriculum that teaches the importance of balancing calories consumed with calories burned. As part of the program, teachers work with students to help them understand their Energy Balance progress. A three-year plan combining Together Counts’ resources and Ball’s newly designed program has made a much-needed impact on students at New Beginnings Family Academy.

“At New Beginnings Family Academy we think that consistent nutrition and physical exercise are paramount in education for both stimulating the mind and body,” said Quentin Ball, development director at New Beginnings Family Academy. “With our Ready, Set, Learn! program, we have the amazing opportunity to provide additional eating and exercising resources to our youngest students – the PreK students – thus instilling in our littlest ones the best habits from day one.”

Established in 2010, Together Counts offers students, educators and families state-of-the-art curriculum and activities – at no cost – that help to build healthy environments and reduce childhood obesity. Results of a Spring 2014 impact study show that students who engaged with the program’s Energy Balance 101 curriculum added one or more physical activities per week to their routine while also making healthier nutrition choices. Additionally, more than 90 percent of educators who implemented the curriculum in their classroom reported that their students had a better understanding of key concepts after using the program tools.

“We are encouraged to see so many creative school leaders demonstrate a real commitment to the health and wellness of their students through their participation in these incentive programs,” said Lisa Gable, President of HWCF. “By implementing the Together Counts curriculum, these preschools are helping children learn the value of active, healthy lifestyles.  We are particularly pleased to provide funding to schools with great need and we look forward to seeing the impact of each award.”

“Discovery Education is committed to providing free resources that not only educate students about the importance of healthy living, but also empower and inspire them to improve the health of their community,” said Lori McFarling, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President, Discovery Education. “We are proud to continue our partnership with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation to provide educators, families and students nationwide with tools they need to fight childhood obesity and achieve healthy lifestyles.”

SILVER SPRING, Md. – April 21, 2015 – USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making audio-visual interviews with survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, will host an interactive virtual experience for middle- and high-school students worldwide to provide a deeper understanding of the Holocaust on Wednesday, May 13 at 1 p.m. EST. During Auschwitz: The Past is Present Virtual Experience, attendees will hear the firsthand perspectives of a Holocaust survivor, 25 teachers and 13 students who recently participated in the 70th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of the Auschwitz German Nazi concentration and extermination camp in Poland, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the relevance of the Holocaust in today’s world.

This virtual experience is part of the Auschwitz: The Past is Present initiative, a global communications and education program offered by the USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education in association with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, in support of the official observance of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Designed to promote a deeper understanding of the continued importance of the Holocaust, this virtual event will connect students with a survivor to explore the history of Jewish life in Poland by visiting Polish memorial sites, including the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the Warsaw Ghetto and Jewish Cemetery, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum; and discuss the consequences of abject hatred and intolerance. Additionally, students will get an exclusive look at the official commemoration that took place on the Jan. 27 anniversary of the liberation outside the infamous Death Gate at Auschwitz Birkenau leading to the concentration camp, and hear survivor stories revealed during the ceremony. Participants may register and submit questions to be answered by some of those who traveled to Poland during the live virtual event at pastispresentauschwitz.com/virtual-experience.

“Going to Poland was a priceless experience,” said Rhode Island teacher Soljane Martinez-Quiles, who was one of 25 teachers selected to participate in professional development programs in Poland. “Many schools could never take their students on field trips to these authentic historic sites, so what better way than to bring these sites – these experiences – to schools all over the world? The validity of what we teach will be enhanced that much more for young people to see us there, not just pointing to it on a map or using a handout to describe it.”

To support educators with this virtual experience, USC Shoah Foundation, IWitness – the Institute’s free online educational platform offering access to more than 1,300 testimonies from survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocide – and Discovery Education will provide classroom resources that include pre- and post-event activities to enrich students’ experience with the virtual event. These activities will enable students to hear survivor testimony, provide some context to the Holocaust, teach students about the past, and encourage them to reflect on how their actions can help make the world a better place.

Earlier this year, USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education selected 25 teachers from North America, Europe, Africa, and Australia to participate in a unique professional development program in Poland as part of the Auschwitz: The Past is Present initiative. These educators along with the 13 students chosen for this program began their journey in Warsaw on Jan. 23, 2015, at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews and concluded their trip by joining the official ceremonies at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on Jan. 27, 2015. The trip encouraged educators to implement digital media resources in their classroom instruction through the use of compelling, primary-source interviews available in the Institute’s Visual History Archive.

“By participating in the Virtual Experience, young people everywhere will be able to learn important lessons while engaging with students like themselves,” said Dr. Kori Street, USC Shoah Foundation Director. “They will also gain a deeper understanding of history before, during and after the Holocaust.”

By working together on this important project, USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education are filling an ever-present need to keep history alive for generations to come. Interacting with testimony as a primary source through IWitness connects young people with voices from the past in a profound and meaningful way.

The program also launched the integration of the USC Shoah Foundation’s testimonies and IWitness activities into two Discovery Education digital services, Discovery Education Streaming Plus and Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook™ for educators to incorporate into instruction.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with the USC Shoah Foundation to provide students around the world with this powerful learning opportunity that strengthens their understanding about the relevance and importance of Holocaust remembrance,” said Lori McFarling, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President, Discovery Education. “This virtual experience will engage students through dynamic digital content that provides important historical context, while introducing them to survivors and connecting them with the past in a way that motivates them to build a better future.”

David Zaslav, President and CEO of Discovery Communications, chairs the committee for Auschwitz: The Past is Present, a global communication and education program that supports official activities of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. In addition to this initiative, the program partnered with Witness Travel Program, in conjunction with World Jewish Congress, which brought 100 survivors and liberators of Auschwitz to be honored guests at the 70th anniversary commemoration.

— All-New Cyberethics Module Explores Critical Concepts Such As Cyberbullying, Online Plagiarism, and Importance of Creating a Positive Digital Footprint —

SILVER SPRING, Md. –Intel® Security, the world’s largest dedicated security technology company, in partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development, has released a new, web-based cyberethics module for students 8-11 as part of the Intel® Security Digital Safety Program, a three-year national education initiative designed to teach children to “Think Before You Link” and make safer decisions when using the Internet. The first and only Discovery Education-supported initiative focusing on cybersecurity education, the Intel Security Digital Safety Program offers educators, students and parents important tips and strategies to help protect their devices and personal information while online.

Similar to the cybersafety and cybersecurity modules that launched earlier this year, the new cyberethics module consists of student-facing, self-paced interactive activities for grades 3-5, an educator guide and a companion parent module. Through participation in the cyberethics module, students will learn how to act more responsibly online, and explore important concepts such as cyberbullying, plagiarism and importance of creating a positive digital footprint. The module is divided into the following three topics:

•         Respecting Everyone Online – Students are reminded that the people they connect with online are real people with real feelings and reputations to protect. Students are introduced to the term cyberbullying, which is a very serious problem online that can upset and frighten those who are being targeted. Students learn what cyberbullying is, what to do if they are cyberbullied, and what they can do to avoid taking  part in cyberbullying behavior.

•         Respecting Others’ Online Property – Students are likely aware that they can download all kinds of digital content from the internet. But they may not be aware that it is unethical, and in some cases illegal, to take, download or reuse digital content that belongs to others without getting permission from and/or crediting  the original owner. Students will learn that digital content belongs to the person or group that created or purchased it, which means non-owners need permission to use it. Students will be introduced to term copyright and learn about the importance of checking websites for copyright lines. Participants will also learn how to create a reference for online citations – an important skill as students are using web-based sources to complete homework assignments. Tips for using digital content safely and legally will also be shared.

•        Creating a Positive Digital Footprint – Students will be introduced to the term digital footprint, the data that is left behind by users on digital services, and learn the “dos” and “don’ts” for creating a positive digital footprint by being respectful of themselves and others online. They will learn that sharing parts of their lives – photos, videos, and posts – is a great way to connect with friends and family; however, that what they share can be viewed by people they don’t know, and once posted online could be there forever.

“Teaching our kids to be safe and savvy online is one of the most important things we can be doing,” said Michelle Dennedy, chief privacy officer of Intel Security. “If we’re successful in these kinds of endeavors, we’ll be contributing not only to kids’ personal well-being but also to their future education and careers – all of which will help spur economic development.”

The Intel Security Digital Safety Program provides educators with standards-aligned resources, including self-paced lessons for use in the classroom to help engage students on timely, relevant topics like Internet safety and security.  At the conclusion of each module, students will receive certificate confirming  they’ve completed the program and have acknowledged that they will act as a responsible cyber citizen.  Additionally, parents can access the program’s at-home family resources to further reinforce the importance of online safety to their children.

Through Intel Security and Discovery Education’s partnership, the Intel Security Digital Safety Program will offer resources designed to teach students ages 8-11 in the United States and Canada the importance of online privacy and strategies for keeping certain types of personally identifiable information (PII) private, create stronger passwords and better protect themselves against cyberbullies. In the partnership’s second year, the program will expand to reach ages 11-14, and in its third year the program will expand internationally  to offer its resources in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

According to the McAfee “2014 Teens and the Screen” study conducted by Intel Security June 3, 2014, 14 percent of youth between the ages of 10 and 18 have posted their home address online, while only 61 percent have enabled privacy settings on their social profiles. It’s more important than ever to educate children about online safety and why it’s important not to overshare and to pay attention to settings and profiles.

Since program launch on November 13, 2014, more than 338,000 students and 900 parents in the U.S. and Canada have engaged in the Intel Security Digital Safety Program modules.

— Teens Put Creative Skills to the Test in Safe Driving Program —

–Through April 30, Public Can Vote Online to Decide which Video will be Turned into a TV-Ready PSA–

Silver Spring, MD (April 16, 2015) – Sometimes peer pressure can be a good thing. Just ask the teen filmmakers who entered Toyota and Discovery Education’s Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge.

Now in its fourth year, the contest invites teens across the country to create short videos to inspire their friends to drive more safely and avoid risky behavior behind the wheel. Today, Toyota and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced the ten finalists chosen from more than 1,000 videos that were submitted this year.

“Each year we are impressed by the creativity and talent of the young filmmakers who enter the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge and this year was no exception,” said Michael Rouse, President of the Toyota U.S.A. Foundation. “At Toyota we believe that when good ideas are shared great things can happen. We applaud the teens who entered the challenge to share their vision to improve safe driving among their peers.”

“We commend this year’s finalists and their use of digital storytelling skills to influence the behavior of their peers, and know that their hard work and creativity will help save lives across the country,” said Bill Goodwyn, president and CEO at Discovery Education. “Discovery Education is proud to partner with Toyota and we salute their leadership in addressing this critical need by providing young people with compelling digital resources and experiences that empower smart decision-making behind the wheel.”

Today through April 30, the public can watch the finalist videos at www.TeenDrive365InSchool.com/vote and place their votes for the People’s Choice Winner, who will receive a $5,000 cash prize and a behind-the-scenes trip to a taping of a Velocity network show. Additionally, a panel of judges at Toyota and Discovery Education will choose first, second and third place winners to receive the following awards.

  • First Place – $15,000 and the chance to work with a Discovery film crew to reshoot their entry video into a TV-ready PSA to air on a variety of Discovery networks
  • Second Place –  $10,000 and a behind-the-scenes trip to a Velocity network show taping
  • Third Place – $7,500

Last year’s grand prize went to Jenny Kim, Tyler Koski, Kevin Kim and Chase Masterstook of Irvine, CA. Their video featured a young boy who visits a tarot card reader and learns he has the power to dramatically alter his future by avoiding distracted driving. The re-created PSA ran across Discovery’s family of networks and can be viewed at http://www.teendrive365inschool.com/teens/video-archive.

The Video Challenge, which was recently named a winner in the annual Communitas Awards, is one component of Toyota and Discovery Education’s TeenDrive365: In School initiative, a comprehensive program offering a range of tools designed specifically for school educators and teens. Resources offered include tools to help teens prepare for the responsibility of driving, such as quizzes, parental discussion points, and a financial calculator; classroom resources for educators, including standards-aligned lesson plans for grades 9-12; and Heads UP!, an interactive game which allows teens to virtually experience the real dangers of distracted driving.

The program is part of TeenDrive365 (www.teendrive365.com), Toyota’s comprehensive initiative to help parents model safer driving behaviors for their children. Building on the programs and resources Toyota has offered for more than a decade, the program offers a collection of online tools, events, expert advice and tips as well as social media elements.

Since Toyota TeenDrive365’s launch in November 2013, millions of people have engaged with its online and in-person resources. Earlier this year, the program introduced a new distracted driving simulator that uses Oculus Rift, the latest virtual reality technology, to bring the dangers of distracted driving to life for parents and teens. To learn more about the resources offered through Toyota TeenDrive365, go to www.TeenDrive365.com.

– New System for Professional Learning and Leadership Cultivates Teacher-Leaders and Supports District Strategic Plans –

SILVER SPRING, Md. (April 14, 2015) – Greenville County Schools (GCS), South Carolina’s largest school system, today announced a deepening of its 13-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. Through this expanded relationship, Greenville County Schools will implement in 10 sites across the district Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps. A comprehensive professional development system, Digital Leader Corps supports the development of teacher-leaders as they serve as change agents powering the district's digital transition.

Since 2002, GCS educators and students have used Discovery Education Streaming, a comprehensive digital library of over 100,000 learning objects aligned to state and national standards. Additionally, the district’s Berea Middle School, Lakeview Middle School, Tanglewood Middle School and Early College School have integrated Discovery Education’s digital Science Techbook into instruction. Beginning later this year, 10 GCS schools will adopt Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps, a professional development program that builds and nurtures a network of teacher-leaders to design and implement successful and innovative teaching strategies that can be shared with their peers.

This new professional learning initiative supports the 2015-2020 Greenville County Schools’ Technology Plan which calls for the development of ongoing and sustained professional development programs for all educators. Over the next several years, the district will utilize current and emerging technologies to create learner-centered instructional environments that enhance academic achievement while growing and sustaining teachers’ capacity to effectively integrate technology into instruction.

“Greenville County Schools is committed to creating an environment where students are inspired to learn, to understand, and to grow into skillful, thoughtful young citizens equipped to play vital roles in our community,” said W. Burke Royster, Superintendent of Greenville County Schools. “Our collaboration with Discovery Education provides the unique combination of digital content and professional development that helps us meet this goal.  We look forward to continuing this partnership.”

Featuring a unique combination of professional development, pedagogy and tools, Digital Leader Corps helps participating educators learn to integrate educational technologies and digital media into classroom instruction. A new innovation included in the model is educator created, student-centered Learning Labs. In these labs, teachers bring to life new teaching strategies, and practice and adapt their skills in a classroom setting before sharing their successes broadly with their colleagues. The program provides teachers with continuous customized consultation throughout the process with on-going modeling, coaching and feedback from Discovery Education expert team in the pre-planning, stakeholder communications and implementation phases.

In addition, the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will continue to support GCS’ educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education shares Greenville County Schools’ belief that engaging digital content and high quality, ongoing professional development are critical to accelerating student achievement,” said Rob Warren, director of partnerships for Discovery Education.  “We look forward to continuing to support Superintendent Royster and the entire Greenville County Schools team as they create the dynamic digital learning environments today’s students demand and deserve.”

Expanded Partnership will Help District Redesign Its Learning Environments and Advance Student Achievement through Integration of Dynamic Digital Textbook

SILVER SPRING, Md. (April 10, 2015) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced an expansion of its partnership with Tennessee’s Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). In the latest phase of this seven-year relationship, MNPS is providing middle school students districtwide with access to Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook™ series, a complete digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks and features standards-based digital content that strengthens literacy, critical thinking and citizenship skills.

This expanded partnership will support the school system’s Learning Technology Plan (LTP), which was designed to develop all students into digital citizens who are prepared to succeed in higher education, the workplace and life. The LTP was created with the guiding belief that access to and purposeful use of technology is essential to students’ development of the knowledge, skills and character necessary to succeed in an increasingly complex and information-rich society. In conjunction with this plan, the school system opted not to purchase traditional, print social studies textbooks for the 2014-15 school year as they quickly become outdated, and instead has begun a gradual shift to digital resources.  Discovery Education is now supporting MNPS’ digital transformation by providing digital social studies textbooks which will empower educators with up-to-date, relevant content to engage learners.

Since 2008, Metro Nashville Public Schools has used Discovery Education Streaming  to transform teaching and learning in classrooms districtwide. Now, the school system will begin implementing Discovery Education’s digital social studies textbook in all of the district’s 41 middle schools, reaching over 20,000 students.  Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook series, which includes courses on United States history, world history and world geography and cultures, uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing and problem solving skills that students will apply in academics and as citizens. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps and informational texts. It is designed to support multiple reading levels and languages, promote personalized learning, inspire curiosity, encourage critical thinking and enable project-based learning.

“Metro Nashville Public Schools is committed to developing our students into tech-savvy digital citizens that are not only prepared to succeed in higher education, the workplace, and life, but to also make a meaningful contribution to Nashville’s economic prosperity and global competitiveness,” said Kelly Henderson, Ed.D., Executive Director of Instruction at Metro Nashville Public Schools. “Dynamic, relevant resources like digital textbooks will help our educators enrich their instruction and empower our students to learn social studies in ways that are simply not possible through the use of traditional, print textbooks.”

Included with each Techbook implementation, Discovery Education experts provide high-quality professional development to support educators as they implement the digital textbook in their classrooms. Discovery Education Professional Development is designed to teach educators how to maximize innovative learning tools and empower them to integrate technology effectively and confidently into instruction.

In addition, the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will continue to support MNPS educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is honored to be a part of Metro Nashville’s efforts to redesign the classroom into a fully digital environment, and transform teaching and learning practices for educators and students,” said Andy Schaefer, vice president at Discovery Education. “We look forward to continuing to support the talented Metro Nashville team as they create authentic, digital learning environments that prepare students for college, careers and citizenship.”
