— Students Earn Scholarships Recognizing their Impact on Creating Positive Changes in their Community —

— Middle School Classrooms Receive Free, Standards-Based Curriculum and Multimedia Tools to Develop Students’ Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving and Creativity Skills —

Silver Spring, Md. (May 29, 2015) – Belk, Discovery Education and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) announced today the winners of the third annual Belk Service Learning Challenge. Designed to support educators, and based on research that students who participate in service learning initiatives demonstrate improved problem-solving skills and increased interest in academics, the challenge encouraged middle school students to help improve their communities through undertaking a service-learning project of their choice.

The Belk Service Learning Challenge invited students to work in teams of up to four classmates with the support and guidance of a teacher/mentor to identify an issue in their local community and design an action plan to implement a solution. The three grand prize winning teams will each receive $2,000 per student team member and a $2,000 teacher award. The grand prize winners include:

Team: “Prosthetic Kids” from District 5 of Lexington & Richland Counties’ CrossRoads Middle School

Location: Columbia, SC

Project Description: Students used 3D printers to create prosthetic hands for children in need, and hosted a school-wide Hand-A-Thon event to assemble more than 20 additional prosthetic hands.

Team: “Dead Run Stream Cleanup” from Baltimore County Public Schools’ Southwest Academy Magnet School

Location: Baltimore, MD

Project Description: Students researched pollution levels of Baltimore’s Dead Run stream, and created an action plan to revitalize the stream by removing all trash and pollutants, preventing runoff, and balancing the water’s pH and oxygen levels.

Team: “Saving Sidewalks” from Buncombe County Schools’ A.C. Reynolds Middle School

Location: Asheville, NC

Project Description: Students designed an action plan to gain approval from the City of Asheville to build new sidewalks in downtown neighborhoods with busy roads to help protect pedestrians, and keep their community members safe.

“The Belk Service Learning Challenge empowers students to take hands-on, interactive approaches to solve important issues that not only affect them, but the entire school community,” said Lexington / Richland School District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner. “The Challenge builds students’ everyday critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills through an exciting opportunity outside of their normal routine, and allows them to understand that they can make a remarkable difference in this world.”

Created solely to support these students through every step of the Challenge, the dynamic online destination BelkServiceLearningChallenge.com equips 6th-8th grade educators with free, standards-based service-learning curriculum, including lesson plans and multimedia tools that reinforce the importance of social responsibility and volunteerism to societies and economics. This year’s Challenge was open to students in grades 6-8 who reside in one of the 16 states where Belk has a presence – including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

“Community involvement is one of our core values at Belk, and we are honored to see young students participate in the Challenge by taking actions to strengthen their communities,” said Jessica Graham, Belk’s vice president of communications and community relations. “We hope that these students will continue to give back, and maintain a sense of commitment to service and their communities.”

“ISTE is proud to honor these amazing middle school students for their creative and impactful service-learning projects that will make tremendous changes in their communities,” said Craig Thibaudeau, Chief External Relations Officer of ISTE. “Through the Challenge, students become more engaged in their learning, and build valuable critical thinking and collaboration skills, which will ultimately make the world a better place for all of us.”

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with Belk and ISTE to provide students with this powerful service learning initiative,” said Lori McFarling, Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President, Discovery Education. “Education is much more than what is taught within the walls of a classroom. Some of the best learning opportunities for students are those that encourage them to connect classroom concepts to aspects of their everyday lives.”

– Codeathon 3.0 Will Inspire Next Generation of Engineers, Computer Scientists and Innovators Through Dynamic, Hands-On Experiences with Coding, Programming and Videography

SILVER SPRING, Md. (May 20, 2015) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, and Virginia’s York County School Division (YCSD) today announced they will partner to host the district’s third annual Codeathon on Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Tabb High School. During Codeathon 3.0, over 100 YCSD students and their families will experience first-hand dynamic career opportunities in the computer science and technology fields and be immersed in hands-on activities involving coding, programming, robotics and videography.

Throughout the event, YCSD students in grades 6-8 will work in small groups to program customizable robots using Lego Mindstorm, while learning and practicing the important skills of programming and coding. Simultaneously, students will use iPads to capture video and photographs documenting their learning and will share the multimedia content they have created through Discovery Education’s Board Builder. Developed with input from administrators at York County School Division, Discovery Education’s Board Builder is a tool which allows students to create virtual project boards using multimedia and text to synthesize their thinking and provide evidence of their understanding of a concept or problem.

“Knowledge of coding is critically important in today’s technology-rich society as it helps students develop essential skills like logical reasoning, problem solving and critical thinking,” said Reginald Fox, coordinator of online learning at YCSD. “In partnership with Discovery Education, we hope to show students the incredible opportunities available to them in the computer science and technology fields and inspire their interest in pursuing these careers.”

Additionally, families and members of the community are invited to attend an engaging panel session where they will learn about current computer science opportunities for students in YCSD and how the subject promotes critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. The panel discussion will feature leading experts in the fields of IT and education, including Gary Lupton, Online Learning Specialist at YCSD; Jack Bowden, Computer Science Student at Thomas Nelson Community College; Chris Dovi, Co-Founder of CodeVA; Joe Dixon, President/CIO at ZEFlearning; and Reem Jaghlit, Director of IT at Discovery Education.

“We are pleased to partner with the talented team at YCSD to support their mission of cultivating York County’s next generation of technology leaders who are prepared to succeed in the global workplace,” said Matt Monjan, vice president at Discovery Education. “The annual Codeathon puts students at the center of the learning process by encouraging them to not just be consumers of multimedia, but to get actively involved in creating their own new digital content and technologies.”

Since 2011, Discovery Education and York County have partnered to bring digital resources to classrooms to empower teachers, enhance curriculum, and inspire students. York County students district-wide currently use Discovery Education Streaming, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas. Resources are aligned to state standards and are searchable, and include videos, images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, audio books, articles, and more. Discovery Education’s Board Builder, now available through Discovery Education Streaming, was created in response to former YCSD superintendent Dr. Eric Williams’ request for a tool that empowered students to create their own content, rather than just consume it.

Launched in November 2014, the Intel Security Digital Safety Program equips educators, students and parents with some of the tools they need to be more confident, safer digital citizens. The program provides educators with standards-aligned resources, including self-paced lessons for use in the classroom to help engage students on timely, relevant topics like Internet safety and security. The program’s interactive student modules teach children ways to help keep personally identifiable information (PII) private online, create stronger passwords, and deal with cyberbullies. Additionally, the program offers at-home resources for parents to reinforce the importance of online safety to their children.

“Intel has a long history of creating reliable technology to enhance the everyday user experience—whether at home, in the classroom, or playing outdoors,” said Gary Davis. “With every new, connected device that hits the market, there is a serious need to teach families and educators how best to use their technology safely and ethically. In the May 18 virtual field trip, high school students will learn about the rewards and challenges of entrepreneurship, how to achieve success, and the characteristics that set entrepreneurs apart. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to meet young entrepreneurs who have turned their creative ideas into reality.

“I’m looking forward to using this virtual field trip as an exciting way to introduce my students to the important world of entrepreneurship,” said Sara Badiner, teacher at Ostego High School in Michigan’s Otsego Public Schools. “This new program will inspire creativity and innovation in my classroom while fostering my students’ everyday critical thinking skills and knowledge to understand the impact of their food choices.”

Mt. Carmel High School Student Wins $15,000 and Will Work with a Discovery Film Crew to Produce His TV-Ready PSA

Silver Spring, MD (May 11, 2015) – When Chicago high school student Elijah Wilborn created his safe driving PSA, he left his phone, music and other distractions curbside – and picked up the grand prize in the TeenDrive365 Video Challenge from Toyota and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.

Now in its fourth year, the challenge invites teens across the country to create short PSAs to inspire their friends to drive more safely and avoid risky behavior behind the wheel. Elijah’s video, which was chosen by a panel of judges at Toyota and Discovery Education from more than 1,000 submissions, takes a creative, humorous spin on the distractions that teens face every day behind the wheel.

In the video, a teenager attempts to navigate his morning routine and drive to school while being beset by a range of all too common distractions – represented by other teens in t-shirts reading “phone,” “radio,” “ego” and more.  As the distractions build to crescendo, the teen finally exclaims from behind the wheel, “everybody out!” and literally drops them off on the curb.  You can view the video here.

“We loved how Elijah’s PSA addressed driving safety with creativity, humor and a clear-eyed view of the distractions that face drivers of all ages,” said Michael Rouse, president of the Toyota USA Foundation. “We offer him our heartfelt congratulations and are proud to help share his vision for encouraging other teens to drive more safely.”

“The TeenDrive365 initiative addresses the need to keep students safe on the road by providing engaging digital resources and experiences that encourage smart choices behind the wheel,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education. “We are honored to stand alongside Toyota in congratulating Elijah and the rest of this year’s winners for their creativity, innovative thinking, and dedication to positively influencing the behavior of their peers.”

"On behalf of the entire Mount Carmel community, I proudly congratulate Elijah on his production of an exceptional safe driving video,” said John Stimler, Principal at Mount Carmel High School. “We are impressed with his efforts to generate excitement among students nationwide about this topic. With his hard work and creativity he will empower his peers to have conversations about teen driver safety."

Second place winner, Demi Straulino, a student at George School in Newtown, PA, will receive $10,000, as well as a behind-the-scenes trip to a live show taping on the Velocity network. Third place winners, Jordan Bjorklund, Daniel Harte, Joseph Salazar and Karina Vazquez, students at Antioch Unified School District’s Deer Valley High School in Antioch, CA, will receive $7,500.  The third place team from Antioch also won the People’s Choice Award, which was determined by an online vote, and will therefore receive an additional $5,000 cash prize as well as a behind-the-scenes trip to a taping of a Velocity network show. These videos, along with the other six finalists, can be viewed here.

The Video Challenge, which was recently named a winner in the annual Communitas Awards, is one component of Toyota and Discovery Education’s TeenDrive365: In School initiative, a comprehensive program offering a range of tools designed specifically for school educators and teens. Resources offered include tools to help teens prepare for the responsibility of driving, such as quizzes, parental discussion points and a financial calculator; classroom resources for educators, including standards-aligned lesson plans for grades 9-12; and Heads UP!, an interactive game which allows teens to virtually experience the real dangers of distracted driving.

The program is part of TeenDrive365, Toyota’s comprehensive initiative to help parents model safer driving behaviors for their children. Building on the programs and resources Toyota has offered for more than a decade, the program offers a collection of online tools, events, expert advice and tips as well as social media elements. About the SIIA CODiE™ Awards

The SIIA CODiE™ Awards were established in 1986 by the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), so that pioneers of the then-nascent software industry could evaluate and honor each other’s work. Since then, the CODiE Awards program has carried out the same purpose – to celebrate the software and information industry’s finest products and services.

The SIIA CODiE Awards are the industry's only peer-reviewed awards program. The first round review of all nominees is conducted by media, publishing, and information services executives with considerable industry expertise, including members of the industry, analysts, media and bloggers, and bankers and investors. The judges are responsible for selecting the CODiE Awards finalists. SIIA members then vote on the finalist products and scores from both rounds are tabulated to select the winners.
