–New Digital Textbooks and Professional Development Program Power District’s Efforts to Create Engaging, Relevant and Personalized Learning Experiences–

Silver Spring, Md. (July 27, 2015) – Wisconsin’s D.C. Everest Area School District today announced an expansion of its partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.

In the latest phase of this collaboration, the school system will provide students district-wide access to Discovery Education’s award-winning series of Math, Science, and Social Studies digital textbooks. In addition, educators from all 10 district schools will participate in Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps, fueling an innovative change movement within the school system. A comprehensive multi-year professional development program, Digital Leader Corps cultivates teacher-leaders to support the district’s digital transition.

This expanded partnership supports elements of the D.C. Everest Area School District’s Comprehensive Information & Technology Plan.  A strategic plan guiding the district’s development of modern digital learning environments, the Comprehensive Information & Technology Plan calls for the creation of engaging, relevant and personalized learning experiences for all students with the support of state-of-the-art technology. Other components of the district’s technology plan include the creation of rigorous, sustained professional development opportunities for all educators and the launch of a 1:1 initiative that will begin with the distribution of iPads to all K-12 students at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year.  In addition, educators and students district-wide will continue using Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas, which was introduced into district classrooms in 2014.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are a breakthrough digital textbook series that is aligned to rigorous standards, supports a comprehensive curriculum, and is updated regularly at no cost.  The series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. The Techbook series also includes professional development and saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Techbooks are platform neutral and can be used in 1:1 or 1-to-many configurations and in any instructional environment.

Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps helps school systems develop a network of teacher-leaders prepared to design and implement successful and innovative teaching strategies to be shared with their peers.  Featuring a unique combination of professional learning, pedagogy and tools, Digital Leader Corps offers participating educators proven strategies for integrating educational technologies and digital media into classroom instruction including educator created, student-centered Learning Labs. In these labs, teachers bring to life new teaching strategies, and practice and adapt their skills in a classroom setting before sharing their successes broadly with their colleagues. The Digital Leader Corps program provides teachers with continuous customized, job-embedded consultation throughout the process with on-going modeling, coaching and feedback from Discovery Education experts in the pre-planning, stakeholder communications and implementation phases.

“The D.C. Everest Area School District is committed to working with the community to develop knowledgeable, productive and creative individuals prepared to meet the challenges of an ever-changing global society,” said Superintendent Kristine A. Gilmore, Ed.D. “We are pleased to expand our partnership with Discovery Education to support this goal. The combination of dynamic digital content and professional development empowers teachers to meet the diverse needs of our district’s students and creates new leadership pathways for our educators.  We look forward to the next phase of this powerful collaboration.”

The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will continue supporting D.C. Everest Area School District’s educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experience with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

– Dynamic Digital Math Textbook and Rigorous Professional Development Support District Efforts to Create Differentiated Instructional Opportunities and Add Depth to Learning –

SILVER SPRING, Md. (July 22, 2015) – Illinois’ Mundelein School District 75 and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced the launch of a new partnership bringing Discovery Education’s new digital math textbook to all middle school students district-wide. Math Techbook™, the latest addition to Discovery Education’s award-winning line of digital textbooks, transforms the way students and teachers experience math through engaging instructional strategies and real-world problems that motivate and excite students with diverse learning styles.

Seeking to improve access to educational technologies and more deeply integrate technology into classroom instruction, District 75 recently released a new Technology Plan that, when implemented, will create additional differentiated instructional opportunities for students, add depth to their learning and conceptual understanding, and help close achievement gaps district-wide. Discovery Education is supporting District 75’s efforts to achieve these goals by providing all educators and students in grades 6-8 access to the Discovery Education Math Techbook.

District 75’s selection of Discovery Education’s Math Techbook to support their new Technology Plan follows a rigorous, year-long review of the service.  Conducted by members of the district’s Middle School Math Department and Administration, this review highlighted Math Techbook’s potential to transform math instruction and ability to leverage real-world problems to engage students with diverse learning styles. Additional components of District 75’s Technology Plan include a rigorous professional development effort supported by Discovery Education, and the launch of a 1:1 initiative at the beginning of next school year, when Chromebooks will be distributed to all middle school students.

“The District 75 Technology Plan envisions the creation of exciting modern digital learning environments that mirror students’ interaction with the world beyond the classroom,” said Dan Swartz, Mundelein School District 75 Director of Teaching and Learning. “We are excited to partner with Discovery Education to achieve this vision.  Through their digital content and professional development, we are creating the classrooms that prepare students for future success.”

Developed by Discovery Education’s team of expert math educators with the input of teachers and administrators from across the country, Math Techbook uses a Discover, Practice, Apply inquiry-based cycle that is built on the three pillars of rigor:  conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application.  Technology enhanced items and formative assessments are woven throughout the entire instructional cycle and teachers have a data dashboard to monitor student progress instantaneously. Courses include Grades 6, 7, and 8 Math; Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II; and Integrated Math:  Math I, Math II, and Math III. Math Techbook engages students with real world problems worth solving while supporting any device, anywhere, anytime in any secondary instructional setting.

In addition to dynamic, Common Core and state standards-aligned content, interactives, videos, digital tools, and game-like activities that increase students’ motivation to learn math, Math Techbook includes useful student tools such as a graphing calculator, a geometry tool, a whiteboard tool, and a matrix solver.  A Student Dashboard embedded within the Math Techbook helps students track their individual progress and take responsibility for their learning. To promote the effective integration of digital textbooks into classroom instruction, Discovery Education is providing District 75 educators transitioning to the new Math Techbook customized, job-embedded professional development.  This professional development not only helps educators explore the engaging resources embedded in Discovery Education Math Techbook, but also provides the strategies needed to engage students in inquiry-based instruction, math investigations, and collaborative, real-world problem-solving.

The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will provide District 75 educators additional support in their efforts to transform students’ learning experience with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to be a part of District 75’s efforts to provide a meaningful and rigorous curriculum for all students, and to prepare each and every child for lifelong learning,” said Discovery Education Partnerships Manager Emily Keith. “We look forward to collaborating with Superintendent Henrikson and the entire District 75 team on our joint mission to create modern digital learning environments that promote student success and foster deep, lasting understanding of math concepts.”
