–U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker to Join Alcoa Engineers for an In-Depth Look at Today’s Advanced Manufacturing Industry; Field Trip Connects STEM to Real-World Advanced Manufacturing Careers–

SILVER SPRING, Md. (September 24, 2015) Alcoa Foundation, one of the largest corporate foundations in the U.S., and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, will celebrate Manufacturing Day on October 2, 2015, with an interactive virtual field trip that provides a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most sophisticated manufacturing facilities in the world. Hosted live from the global headquarters of Alcoa Power and Propulsion, a business unit of Alcoa Engineered Products and Solutions, the Manufacture Your Future LIVE Virtual Field Trip will connect science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classroom concepts to various career paths available in today’s advanced manufacturing industry.

Available at no cost to classrooms worldwide, the Manufacture Your Future LIVE Virtual Field Trip will transport students to Alcoa Power and Propulsion in Whitehall, Mich., to explore the manufacturing processes that yield several of the company’s innovative products – all of which play an important role in keeping planes in the air and passengers safe while flying. Participating students will tour the facility’s research center for a look at state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing technologies including 3D printers, high-tech robotics and process modeling, as well as hear from Alcoa’s leading engineers as they discuss and demonstrate the relevance and importance of STEM skills in their jobs and careers.

The virtual field trip will also feature an exclusive interview by a high school engineering student with Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, who will discuss the important role of the advanced manufacturing industry in the U.S. economy and the critical need to build a highly skilled workforce. Students and educators can register for the virtual event and submit questions ahead of time to be answered live by Mike Pepper, President of Alcoa Power and Propulsion, at: http://www.manufactureyourfuture.com/VirtualFieldTrip

“I’m excited to integrate this virtual field trip into my classroom instruction and engage students through interactive, digital content that takes them outside the walls of our classroom and connects STEM skills to real-world careers  in the advanced manufacturing industry,” said Jessica Donaldson, teacher at Cane Bay Middle School, Berkeley County School District, S.C. “This virtual field trip provides a unique opportunity for students to learn directly from subject-matter experts and see first-hand how STEM impacts our everyday life in ways that are simply not possible through the use of traditional text.”

“The manufacturing industry has been and will continue to be a principal engine of our economy. According to the Manufacturing Institute, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will likely need to be filled in the next decade, and the skills gap in our nation is expected to result in 2 million of those jobs going unfilled,” said Suzanne van de Raadt, Director, Program Development, Alcoa Foundation. “Now more than ever we need to show tomorrow’s workforce the exciting career options they have in the manufacturing industry, and we are proud to have some of our talented members of Alcoa’s Whitehall team share their stories.”

This virtual field trip is provided as part of Alcoa Foundation and Discovery Education’s award-winning “Manufacture Your Future” program, a comprehensive online site that offers middle and high school educators, guidance counselors, students and families hands-on resources to build excitement around post-secondary manufacturing career opportunities. Manufacture Your Future encourages the development of critical thinking skills through real-world application. It offers dynamic standards-based, STEM-focused lesson plans, career guides, family discussion starters and other online resources that highlight today’s advanced manufacturing careers and demonstrate the crucial role that manufacturing plays in daily life. Hope Street Group, The Manufacturing Institute, and SME Education Foundation provided expertise.

“Discovery Education is proud to continue our partnership with Alcoa Foundation to deliver innovative educational resources that strengthen students’ STEM skills and build a workforce-ready talent pipeline for the advanced manufacturing industry,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President, Discovery Education. “Digital content such as this Virtual Field Trip engages today’s 21st century learners through dynamic, interactive experiences that transform teaching and learning and increase student achievement.”

–Dynamic Digital Science Textbooks Will Advance District Efforts to Create Challenging, Learner-Centered Environments that Prepare Students for College and Careers–

Silver Spring, Md. (September 21, 2015) – Georgia’s Marietta City Schools (MCS) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced an expansion of their 15-year partnership.  In the latest phase of this collaboration, MCS will provide students district-wide access to Discovery Education’s award-winning Science Techbook™. A digital textbook series, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and include professional development.

MCS’s integration of the Discovery Education Science Techbook into classroom instruction supports the school system’s new District Technology Plan.  Created by the district’s Technology Innovation Committee with the input of district educators, parents, and other stakeholders, this strategic blueprint is guiding the creation of the inquiry-based, experiential learning communities critical to MCS’s efforts to ensure all students graduate college, career, and life ready.

Discovery Education’s Science Techbook series empowers educators to transform science instruction. Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Additional student features include bilingual text-to-speech and leveled reading tools, and note-taking and highlighting capabilities.

Embedded formative assessment opportunities help educators monitor student progress, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbook works on any device and can be implemented in a variety of instructional settings.  To ensure each MCS teacher is fully supported in their transition to the Science Techbook, Discovery Education experts will provide all Science faculty high-quality professional development supporting the integration of the digital textbook into classroom practice.

A recent study conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC found that usage of Science Techbook is associated with higher science achievement scores in elementary school students. After one year of implementation in South Carolina’s Rock Hill Schools, fourth grade students whose teachers used Discovery Education Science Techbook scored higher on average on the 2013 Science Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) than students whose teachers did not use Science Techbook. Techbooks are also a substantially less expensive option per student at nearly half the cost of a traditional textbook, with additional savings derived from a lack of textbook replacement or inventory costs.

“As a school system committed to innovation, MCS prides itself on ensuring that all students achieve high levels of academic success and are prepared to be college and career ready upon graduation,” said MCS Superintendent Dr. Emily Lembeck. “We are pleased to expand our collaboration with Discovery Education.  Together, we are providing the technology-rich learning experiences that are critical for all of our students to obtain the skills necessary for global competitiveness.”

The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) will continue supporting MCS educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experience with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the DEN connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.  In addition, MCS educators and students will continue using Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas.  First introduced into Marietta City Schools in 2001 through Discovery Education and Georgia Public Broadcasting’s long-term partnership, Streaming Plus is currently used in classrooms district-wide.

“Discovery Education is pleased to deepen our collaboration with Marietta City Schools, and we look forward to continuing to support their efforts to build the inquiry-based, experiential learning communities today’s students demand and deserve,” said Shayla Rexrode, manager of partnerships at Discovery Education. “We applaud Dr. Lembeck and the entire MCS team for their continued dedication to creating supportive, engaging and technology-rich classrooms that advance academic achievement.”

–New partnership with the Tennessee College Access & Success Network and Discovery Education addresses the challenges of lower-income, first-generation college students–

New York, NY – UBS announced today a $2 million commitment to launch The TalentED Project, a new initiative aimed at increasing college success through strategic partnerships with the Tennessee College Access & Success Network (TCASN) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. The TalentED Project, which will launch its pilot in October 2015, is an innovative technology-based solution, designed to increase the recruitment of high-potential, lower-income, first-generation college students. The portal connects college admissions officers with college access professionals enabling them to match talented students to colleges that are a good fit for them.

"The TalentED Project is a new approach to tackling challenges faced by lower-income, first-generation college goers," said Bob McCann, President Americas, UBS. "In partnership with TCASN and Discovery Education, we can help accomplish something that is important to every single person in this country — getting more students into the schools and universities that will put them on the road to lifelong success."

Last year, UBS announced a $10 million, multi-year commitment to building out a platform for college success, UBS NextGen Leaders, with a goal to increase graduation rates among first-generation and lower-income college students. The platform's first initiative, UBS-SEO College Scholars, is an intensive college success program in partnership with SEO Scholars that provides support and resources to a cohort of African American and Hispanic/Latino young men. The TalentED Project is the newest program under UBS NextGen Leaders, with TCASN serving as the project's lead content and implementation partner and Discovery Education leading the technical development of the platform, and playing a key role in raising awareness and distributing these innovative resources to its growing community of educators and students.

The TalentED Project enables admission recruiters to connect with students earlier in the traditional admission process, so that they can more efficiently and effectively recruit them to their campuses. For college access professionals and students, the portal helps in identifying "good fit" colleges and synthesizing information including selectivity, affordability, retention and graduation rates.

“We know from research that college fit – finding a college that meets your academic, financial, social and emotional needs – is critical to college success and completion. High-potential, lower-income, first generation students are not always aware of the many college options available to them,” said Bob Obrohta, TCASN Executive Director. “The TalentED Project, created with input from over 150 college admissions and college access professionals, not only helps these students realize their potential, but it also allows colleges to actively recruit these students to their campuses.”

"Governor Haslam’s Tennessee Promise makes community college free for every high school graduate in Tennessee, the president just took a first step to making it easier for any student to apply for financial aid by letting families use tax information they already have, and UBS is going to connect high school guidance counselors with college admissions officers to help low-income students get into good colleges,” said Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn). “Today’s Tennessee high school students have the best opportunity in history to earn a college degree – and it will be the best investment they’ll ever make."

“Through the Drive to 55 and Tennessee Promise initiatives we are working to change higher education expectations in Tennessee, but this is not just about ‘access’ but also ‘success,’” Governor Bill Haslam said. “We want to do everything we can to empower Tennessee students in their pursuit of a degree and a high quality job, and The TalentED Project creates another avenue to help lower-income, first-generation college students in this effort.”

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with UBS and the Tennessee College Access & Success Network on this important initiative,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO of Discovery Education.  “In today’s global economy, the knowledge and skills acquired through a college education are more valuable than ever.  We are pleased to support this innovative effort to help first-generation, lower-income students across the country increase their chances for success beyond high school graduation.”

The partnership is designed to address challenges that are faced by students when matriculating to selective institutions and persisting to graduation. For the pilot, The TalentED Project aims to have 50 select colleges and universities nationwide, and college access professionals from New Jersey, New York, Tennessee and Chicago, IL.

“A virtual field trip is an exciting way to promote civic education and to celebrate Constitution Day,” said Paulette Brown, president of the ABA. “We are pleased to join Discovery Education and the National Constitution Center in this innovative educational effort to help students gain a better understanding of the United States Constitution.”

Kerry Sautner, vice president of education at the National Constitution Center says, “The National Constitution Center is thrilled to open the museum doors to invite students around the world to take part in a learning experience that they may not have been able to experience in person. This Discovery Education opportunity to experience the museum’s constitutional content and to hear from Judge Rendell is a history lesson like no other.”

“Discovery Education is proud to collaborate with the American Bar Association and the National Constitution Center to present students worldwide this unique learning experience,” said Scott Kinney, senior vice president, Discovery Education. “Understanding the importance of the Constitution in our everyday lives is important to college, career, and citizenship readiness, and we thank our partners for their support in creating this exciting digital learning opportunity.”

— Kilimanjaro Learning Xpedition Will Culminate With Exclusive Virtual Field Trip on October 8 —

SILVER SPRING, Md. (September 8, 2015) – On September 24, an international team of scientists, teachers, and students will embark on an eight-day expedition to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the world’s Seven Summits and the tallest mountain on the African continent.  The Kilimanjaro Learning Xpeditition, led by GLOBE teacher and partner Michael O’ Toole, is a joint project between The GLOBE Program, a worldwide K-12 science and education program, GLOBE Africa, Colorado’s St. Vrain Valley School District, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.

GLOBE students and teachers from Benin, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Oman and the United States will work side by side with research scientists, Dr. Hamid Sulaiman (scientist – Department of Biology Sultan at Oman's Qaboos University), Mr. Sylvester Chaisamba (research scientist – Tanzania Meteorological Agency), and Yliass Lawani (graduate research assistant – University D'Abomey-Calavi, Benin) collecting data on the shifting biomes and shrinking glaciers of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

During the Xpedition, participating students, teachers, and scientists will investigate the terrain, culture, and wildlife of Mount Kilimanjaro.  The team will collect data using GLOBE protocols on each of the mountain’s six different biomes and major communities of plants and animals, study the region’s climate and weather, and describe their journey to a worldwide audience through a variety of digital resources.  Data are entered into GLOBE’s international science database, where students and scientists can access them for visualization and further research.

Students around the globe are encouraged to virtually participate in this event by following the Kilimanjaro Learning Xpedition team’s journey at https://www.discoveryeducation.com/Kilimanjaro/ and via #Discoverkili. Conditions permitting, the team will answer questions each day, display the data they collect during their journey, and post photos and videos of their ascent and descent.

Discovery Education will further support the expedition by hosting a Virtual Field Trip on October 8th at 1:00 PM (ET). Broadcasting live from St. Vrain Valley School District in Colorado, the Virtual Field Trip will provide students the opportunity to hear firsthand experiences from educators who hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro. Students will also be able to explore the findings of the learning expedition and find out more about real-world applications of the research. Schools worldwide are invited to attend this event at no cost.  For additional information and to register, visit: https://www.discoveryeducation.com/Kilimanjaro/

“St. Vrain's students, teachers and staff continue to reach the pinnacle of success in every aspect of their roles and responsibilities,” said Don Haddad, Superintendent of Schools at St. Vrain Valley School District. “We're very honored to partner with the GLOBE Program and Discovery Education with this type of endeavor, which has become the standard of excellence that defines our district's dedication to student achievement.”

“During GLOBE’s 20th anniversary, the 5th Kilimanjaro Learning Expedition is a wonderful example of the power of bringing students, teachers, and scientists together to investigate local environments while connecting and sharing the data and experience globally,” stated Dr. Tony Murphy, director of the GLOBE Implementation Office. “While observing firsthand the diversity of the six biomes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the team will challenge those GLOBE schools following from around the world to answer the question: What is it like where you live?” (To enter data into the database, students have to be in a GLOBE school with a GLOBE trained teacher.)

In addition, on this particular trek, students and teachers will assist with data acquisition for NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive Mission (SMAP).  This satellite measures soil moisture from space, while students collect the same information on the ground.  Both scientists and students can then compare these measurements in their research.  “Working with Discovery Education expands the reach of the Kilimanjaro Learning Xpedition and GLOBE’s involvement with this science education and cultural experience” Murphy said.

“Discovery Education is excited to partner with St. Vrain Valley School District and The GLOBE Program on this unique expedition,” said Jason Barnes, vice president of educational partnerships at Discovery Education. “We are pleased not only to be supporting this once-in-a-lifetime journey, but also to be demonstrating the power of digital content and educational technologies to take students beyond their classrooms to visit people and places they might otherwise not see.  I am thankful to our partners at The GLOBE Program and the St. Vrain Valley School District for the opportunity to support this exciting event.”

Following the expedition, Discovery Education’s expert team of content professionals will use the digital artifacts and data gathered during this journey to create a variety of standards-aligned digital resources.  These resources, which may include images, oral interviews, articles, videos and more, will be incorporated into Discovery Education Streaming, Streaming Plus and Discovery Education Science Techbook
