Comprehensive Educational Initiative Offers All New Standards-Aligned Digital Resources and Engaging Curriculum to Inspire Students Grades 3-8 to Be Physically Active for 60 Minutes Every Day

Dallas. (November 30, 2015) – The American Heart Association (AHA) and National Football League (NFL) have partnered with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to expand the AHA-NFL PLAY 60 Challenge to offer all-new, standards-aligned digital resources for students, educators and families across the country. The new resources include interactive classroom activities, engaging curriculum and lesson plans, and family resources. Available at no cost, the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge is designed to inspire students grades 3-8 to get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day and help more schools become places that encourage physically active lifestyles year-round.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Acknowledging that physical activity produces overall physical, psychological and social benefits, and inactive children are likely to become inactive adults, the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge leverages the American Heart Association’s health expertise and the NFL’s commitment to physical fitness to motivate children to become physically active and instill healthy fitness habits. Powered by Discovery Education, the new PLAY 60 Challenge resources include:

  • Curriculum and classroom activities: Aligned to National Physical Education Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards, NFL PLAY 60’s curriculum, lesson plans and classroom activities cover topics such as the impact of physical activity on cardiovascular health, and movements and strategies that best contribute to strong physical health.
  • Downloadable family resources: Designed to extend learning beyond the classroom, NFL PLAY 60’s at-home family resources encourage the development of personal and family goals for weekly physical activity.
  • Interactive video segments: Featuring Ryan Kerrigan, outside linebacker for the Washington Redskins, NFL PLAY 60 offers short, interactive videos for classroom or home use that excite and educate students about various exercises. During these videos, Kerrigan coaches participating students through various movements while explaining the benefits of each physical activity.

“Engaging students in physical activity not only provides fitness benefits, but also aids in improving academic achievement,” said Andy Losik, teacher at Hamilton Community Schools, Michigan. “I am looking forward to implementing NFL PLAY 60 resources in my classroom to inspire my students to become physically active and understand the importance of daily exercise.”

According to a recent study published in the online journal PLOS ONE, kids who are physically fit have differences in their brain structures that might allow them to achieve higher in math. The study found that children who could run for longer periods of time had increased functioning in their frontal cortex. This part of the brain is important for academic performance because it is involved in working memory, which especially helps in solving math problems, as well as cognitive flexibility, or the ability to tune out distractions.

“The American Heart Association is delighted to partner with the National Football League and Discovery Education to expand the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge,” said Nancy Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the American Heart Association. “By working together we’ll be able to provide new digital resources to help increase the engagement of children and their families in physical activity. By developing healthy habits at the earliest age possible, kids greatly reduce their risk of facing heart disease and other chronic illnesses later in life.”

“We are pleased to work with Discovery Education to expand the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge through online activity guides and physical fitness videos,” said Clare Graff, NFL Director of Social Responsibility. “These online classroom resources will benefit students, educators and families across the country and help continue the American Heart Association and NFL’s long-standing commitment to youth health and wellness.”

“Discovery Education is proud to collaborate with the American Heart Association and National Football League to extend the NFL PLAY 60 Challenge through dynamic classroom resources,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President of Discovery Education. “This important initiative provides classrooms and families nationwide with unique learning opportunities that excite and engage students in important health topics and inspire lifelong healthy habits.”

U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance Partners with Discovery Education to Launch Educational Resources based on the Documentary, FARMLAND, Connecting Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship Skills to Today’s Agriculture Industry

Elizabeth Hillman, Discovery Education
Elizabeth_hillman@discovery.com, 240-662-2664

SILVER SPRING, Md. (November 23 , 2015) – The U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance® (USFRA) announced today the launch of an all-new educational initiative designed to provide high school students a first-hand glimpse into modern agriculture. Created in conjunction with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, Discovering FARMLAND offers interactive resources that allow teachers and students to experience the industry through the eyes of six young farmers and ranchers, all while learning about food production’s connection to science, economics, technology and sustainability.

Discovering FARMLAND provides high school students, educators and parents with standards-aligned lesson plans and interactive activities that explore concepts critical to modern agriculture, such as sustainability, technology, and science. Designed by Discovery Education’s curriculum experts, these resources aim to stimulate thoughtful conversations between educators and students about key issues including: innovative use of technology on farms and how it has transformed the industry, challenges farmers face such as weather and growing conditions, common stereotypes around farmers and ranchers, and market supply and demand. Additionally, FARMLAND will be integrated into Discovery Education Streaming Plus™, a comprehensive digital library containing more than 200,000 learning assets aligned to state and national curriculum standards.

“I'm excited to show my students the connections between chemistry and agriculture through real-world examples showcased in Discovering FARMLAND," said Rob Lamb, Chemistry Teacher, Pattonville School District, Missouri. “This program will introduce different career paths available in today’s rapidly evolving agriculture industry while also helping to build students’ critical-thinking skills.”

FARMLAND was created by Academy Award®-winning director James Moll to connect viewers with people who grow and raise our food. Many people have never visited a farm and do not know that 95 percent of the farms in the U.S. are family-owned. With the use of this film and accompanying resources, teachers and students will have a better understanding of where their food comes from, as well as the various career paths available in this essential industry.

Director James Moll said, “Before making this film I had never even stepped foot on a farm, and that seems to be the case for more and more Americans.  So I’m thrilled that Farmland is reaching a whole new level together with Discovery Education.”

“Since the theatrical release of FARMLAND, we have held hundreds of screenings of the film and have often been asked by teachers for content they can share in their classrooms,” said USFRA Chairwoman, Nancy Kavazanjian. “The expansion of the film’s distribution to high school teachers and students across the country will continue to give more people the opportunity to better connect with their food and farmers and ranchers. Through this film and interactive lesson plans, students will be able to learn about the science, technology and focus on sustainability that goes into today’s farming and ranching practices.”

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance to provide students across the country, especially urban youth, this unique learning opportunity,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President of Discovery Education. “The engaging resources available in Discovering FARMLAND will transport students to farms across America, and connect science, technology and entrepreneurship skills to real-world careers and practices in today’s modern agriculture industry.”

The Discovering FARMLAND materials are available for viewing and download at www.DiscoveringFarmland.com. The film is also available on various platforms including Netflix, Walmart.com (as well as select retail outlets) and additional video-on-demand and digital download platforms. Please visit www.FarmlandFilm.com for additional information.

Produced by Moll’s Allentown Productions, FARMLAND was made with the generous support of the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance®.

Discovery Education’s Math Techbook is the second Techbook to be adopted by the Oregon State Board of Education as a core instructional resource and follows the state’s adoption of the Discovery Education Science Techbook in 2009.

Developed by Discovery Education’s team of expert math educators with the input of teachers and administrators from across the country, Math Techbook uses a Discover, Practice, Apply inquiry-based cycle built on the three pillars of rigor:  conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application.  Technology enhanced items and formative assessments are woven throughout the entire instructional cycle, and teachers have a data dashboard to monitor student progress instantaneously. Math Techbook engages students with real world problems worth solving while supporting any device, anywhere, anytime in any secondary instructional setting.

In addition to dynamic, Common Core standards-aligned content, interactives, videos, and game-like activities that increase students’ motivation to learn math, Math Techbook includes useful student tools such as a graphing calculator, a geometry tool, a whiteboard tool, and a matrix solver.  A Student Dashboard embedded within the Math Techbook helps students track their individual progress and take responsibility for their learning.

“By adopting Math Techbook as a core instructional resource, the Oregon State Board of Education empowers educators to create modern digital learning environments that transform teaching and learning and improve student outcomes,” said Jason Barnes, Vice President of Educational Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We look forward to working with schools systems statewide as they leverage this dynamic resource to support the success of each learner.”

To support the effective integration of digital textbooks into classroom instruction, Discovery Education provides each educator using the Math Techbook customized, job-embedded professional development. This professional development not only helps educators explore the engaging resources embedded in Discovery Education Math Techbook, but also provides the strategies needed to engage students in inquiry-based instruction, math investigations, and collaborative, real-world problem-solving on any device and in any classroom configuration.

– National Program Launching on December 1 Uses Famed Sports Video Game to Ignite Students’ Passion for Math and Science –

SILVER SPRING, Md. [November 4, 2015] – EA SPORTS™, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, have teamed up for a national educational program that taps into children’s excitement about football and video games to ignite a passion for math and science. EA SPORTS Madden NFL: Football by the Numbers, a comprehensive educational initiative, is a first-of-its-kind initiative to engage students in grades 5-9 with science and math content through an interactive digital learning game. The program also includes a virtual field trip to EA’s Tiburon development studio to meet the team behind the Madden NFL games and a local school community night featuring an NFL player, in addition to other learning tools.

A national survey from the Games and Learning Publishing Council about teaching with digital games found that 78 percent of teachers agreed digital games improved students’ mastery of curricular content and skills, and digital gaming helps to motivate students to attend class, pay attention and make stronger efforts to succeed. Madden NFL: Football by the Numbers will excite students about math and science by using a combination of famous Madden NFL highlights and plays by some of the League’s most recognizable players and additional compelling content from the series. The educational program takes students inside the science and math behind football fundamentals and teaches them how and why certain offensive and defensive plays work. The program will launch on December 1 and will be available at no cost to educators, parents and students worldwide at www.footballbythenumbers.discoveryeducation.com.

“This is an amazing new program to reach kids and engage them in math and science, and we’re excited to be a part of it,” said Anthony Stevenson, VP of Marketing for Electronic Arts. “We’ve always strived for Madden NFL to be a teaching tool for the sport of football, and now we’re marrying the art of the video game to the science behind our young fans’ favorite sport, teaching them both the fundamentals of the sport and the math that fuels it.”

The program consists of interactive scenarios that are broken down into three sections: Explore, Learn and Game Play. In “Explore,” students are introduced to football-related concepts, positions and strategies that relate to the game. Students then “Learn” about specific math and science concepts as they relate to various offensive and defensive strategies. Lastly, students will apply learnings during “Game Play.”  For example, in the offensive scenario, after receiving a set of conditions of what is needed to execute a pass between NFL players Eli Manning and Odell Beckham, Jr., the student selects which type of pass is best for the play, and at what angle and velocity the ball should be thrown based on concepts explained in the earlier sections. The program keeps giving the student plays to run until he either scores a touchdown or uses three plays without gaining a first down. Conversely, in the defensive scenario, students assume the role of defensive coordinator and are encouraged to use probability to make game-time decisions about what type of defense to use based on the yardage and downs of their opponents.

“Learning to love math and science has always been important, and even more so now as our world becomes more dependent on technology. Many of our players are passionate about these subjects, and through the Madden NFL: Football by the Numbers platform, kids will see that math and science can be fun and relatable,” said Ahmad Nassar, President, NFL Players Inc. “We're proud to team up with innovators like Discovery Education and EA SPORTS to provide kids an extraordinary opportunity to learn and achieve results alongside their favorite players.”

“Discovery Education is thrilled to collaborate with Electronic Arts and the NFL Players Association to use game and play to reach students at a time when research shows their interest in math and science fades,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education. “Not only does Madden NFL: Football by the Numbers engage students in these critical subjects through interactive, dynamic content, but it shows them the real-world relevance of these classroom subjects.”

Discovery Education will also broadcast into thousands of schools a virtual field trip in the Spring of 2016 that will take students inside EA’s Tiburon development studio in Orlando, Fla., to meet the team behind the Madden NFL games that they love. The virtual event will showcase how engineers, animators, designers, analysts and producers work together on the Madden NFL series to bring the games to life and ignite emotion into sports.
