– Offers Middle School Students an Exclusive Look Into Real-World STEM Applications and Careers –

SILVER SPRING, Md. (February 19, 2016)Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, and Freeport-McMoRan, a leading international natural resource company, will host an interactive live virtual field trip on March 3, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. EST for students nationwide. The Journey Through Copper Processing live virtual field trip will offer middle school students a behind-the-scenes look at how copper goes from ore to more than 99.9% pure copper. During this virtual event, participants will have exclusive access to Freeport-McMoRan’s leading engineers and metallurgists who utilize STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in their everyday work.

Hosted live from Freeport-McMoRan’s Morenci Copper facility in Arizona, this virtual field trip is part of Discovery Education and Freeport-McMoRan’s overall “Dig Into Mining: The Story of Copper” program, which equips educators, students and families with free resources designed to explain how metals are relevant in everyday life, and to highlight various STEM careers available in the copper industry. During this virtual field trip, students will go behind-the-scenes of a working copper mine to learn about the different phases of copper production and hear from Freeport-McMoRan professionals about their roles as they showcase real-world examples of how STEM is used in the workplace. Students and educators may submit questions in advance on the program website for a chance to have them answered live during the event. To register and submit questions for this event, please visit: http://www.digintomining.com/virtualfieldtrips.

“I’m excited to integrate this virtual field trip into my classroom instruction to take students beyond the walls of our school, and demonstrate how STEM concepts are utilized in a real-world setting,” said Cheryl Lykowski, Teacher, Bedford Public Schools, Michigan. “This unique learning experience will connect students directly to subject-matter experts and highlight a variety of STEM-related career paths available in today’s copper industry.”

Additionally, educators and students may utilize Dig Into Mining: The Story of Copper’s all-new Virtual Lab, From Ore to More, to gain a deeper understanding of topics that will be discussed during the live event. This interactive Virtual Lab offers an authentic, multimedia learning simulation focused on the operations phase of copper processing. During the lab, students navigate the three stages of copper processing and learn how copper goes from ore to more than 99.9% pure copper. In each of the stages, students hear from a Freeport-McMoRan professional about their role and the equipment used during that stage of processing. After navigating all three stages, students complete a summative assessment and provide their feedback on their favorite career path and processes learned about in the lab. Students may go through the lab individually or as a part of a team.

“Our partnership with Discovery Education shares the important story of mining in a way that is relevant and fun for students, and showcases the important and challenging work of our employees,” said Tracy Bame, Freeport-McMoRan Foundation President. “We hope that the high quality resources of Discovery Education provide many more students with a new opportunity to see inside an exciting industry where professionals positively impact society on a day-to-day basis.”

In addition to the virtual field trip, Discovery and Freeport-McMoRan’s program provides middle school students, educators and families with a comprehensive online site that includes hands-on resources to inspire students to explore the world of copper and learn how the earth’s natural resources shape their lives geologically, societally and economically. The program also offers 6th-8th grade educators standards-based classroom tools and lesson plans designed to encourage students’ development of key STEM, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Dig Into Mining: The Story of Copper’s family extensions allow students to share their classroom learnings with family members at home through insightful conversation about geology and the earth, and match their skills and interests to exciting opportunities within the copper industry.

Chase the Race in School to Advance Envision’s Mission of Facilitating Conversations around Civics and the Election Process among Today’s Youth

WASHINGTON, DC (February 17, 2016) – Envision, a leading experiential education organization, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced a multi-year educational partnership that will provide students and educators with tools to engage, captivate and energize the youth voice on the importance of democracy and civic engagement throughout this year’s Presidential election, leading up to the 2017 inauguration. This program, Chase the Race in School, complements Chase the Race 2016 – Envision’s program that will give 12 high school students across the United States the opportunity to play an active role in the election process by serving as onsite reporters at a number of key political events.

Through this partnership, Discovery Education will amplify Chase the Race by helping Envision extend the discussion into classrooms nationwide. Chase the Race in School will leverage Discovery Education’s expertise in developing classroom activities that inform students – and future voters – of the election process in engaging ways, and will provide educators with free, supplemental activities and interactive content. These activities will be accompanied by four video vignettes featuring Chase the Race reporters.

Key components of the partnership include:

  • An all-new program, http://www.ChasetheRaceinSchool.com, that will house all program assets, including Chase the Race classroom activities and interactive content
  • A series of video vignettes created by Discovery Education and hosted by Chase the Race 2016 reporters that will provide students and educators with a unique perspective on how the U.S. election process works and complements the Chase the Race in School classroom activities
  • An interactive, in-person event in January 2017, hosted by Discovery Education at Envision’s Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit, held in Washington, DC and featuring a panel discussion from Chase the Race journalists and a keynote from Malala Yousafzai
  • A virtual, livestreamed “Town Hall” event hosted by Discovery Education during the Summit
  • The use of Discovery Education curriculum to enhance Envision’s respected career exploration programs, particularly in the STEM fields

“Partnering with Envision was a natural fit because of its focus on the importance of civic engagement and the emphasis on the youth voice in the election process,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President, Discovery Education. “The Chase the Race 2016 reporters will have the unique role of serving as conduits between the candidates and America’s youth, and will make sure that topics impacting the next generation are part of the campaign. The engaging digital content available through this program will be invaluable to educators looking to teach the election cycle and founding principles of American government.”

“Through our Chase the Race program and 2017 Presidential Inaugural Leadership Summit, students will receive a behind-the-scenes look at the United States’ democratic process, and through their voices and commentary they have the potential to energize an entire new generation of voters,” said Envision CEO Duncan Young. “We are thrilled that by partnering with Discovery Education, we are expanding access to the content our Chase the Race reporters produce to millions of their peers across the country.”

Silver Spring, Md. (February 10, 2016) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, and Wilkes University, a leader in graduate education, today announced an expansion of their 11-year partnership.  In the latest phase of this collaboration, Discovery Education and Wilkes University have launched a new 12-credit program designed to prepare educators to incorporate STEM strategies into their instructional practice and foster a culture of STEM in their schools and school systems.  Called the STEM Letter of Endorsement, this program provides an alternative pathway through which educators can grow their expertise in incorporating STEM education into every facet of teaching and learning.

The STEM Letter of Endorsement program emphasizes methods through which educators can create engaging STEM lessons that build the analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills students need for success in any career or educational path. Featuring numerous opportunities for hands-on learning, course designers and faculty members have designed a curriculum that is relevant, practical, and immediately applicable to classroom instruction.

The program is conducted entirely online and courses are offered in accelerated seven-week sessions, allowing completion in eight months. Access to Discovery Education’s full suite of services, including Discovery Education Streaming Plus and the Discovery Education Techbook series, are included in the tuition.

“STEM teaching and learning is not just limited to specific subject areas. Developing a successful STEM culture requires teachers to think holistically and with an integrated mindset,” said Rhonda Rabbitt, dean of Wilkes University’s School of Education. “We’re thrilled to grow our partnership with Discovery Education and offer innovative programs that are so relevant in today’s education space.”

Since 2005, Discovery Education and Wilkes University have partnered to support teachers as they integrate educational technology into classroom instruction. In 2008, Discovery Education and Wilkes University launched an online master’s degree program in instructional media. The 30-credit program prepares educators to engage today’s students in learning through digital resources. Since its inception, educators from 46 states and provinces have successfully completed the program.

“Discovery Education is committed to helping educators around the world acquire the skills and expertise they need to advance their careers and improve student achievement,” said Lance Rougeux, Discovery Education Vice President of Learning Communities.  “We are excited to continue our partnership with Wilkes University and launch this new program helping educators develop a culture of STEM in their schools that we know support success both inside and outside the classroom.”

Applicants to the STEM Letter of Endorsement program must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and submit professional recommendations, official transcripts and a copy of their teaching certification during the admissions process.  Classes begin March 7, and upon successful completion of the program, Pennsylvania educators can apply to add the STEM endorsement, which has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, to their teaching certificate.

-Adoption of Interactive Science Techbook Empowers West Virginia Educators With Digital Resources to Transform Science Instruction-

Silver Spring, Md. (February 2, 2016) – Following a thorough evaluation, the West Virginia Department of Education has approved the Discovery Education Science Techbook™ for use as a core instructional resource for elementary, middle, and high school science courses through its state adoption process. An award-winning digital textbook series, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and include robust professional development.

The West Virginia Department of Education adopted all elementary, middle and high school Discovery Education Science Techbook courses, including Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, and Physics, with 100% coverage of West Virginia’s Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives for Science. Discovery Education’s award-winning Science Techbook has now been added to the West Virginia Department of Education’s Official Multiple List of Approved Resources, which school districts statewide use to identify the instructional resources that best meet the needs of their students.

“Science Techbook’s high-quality digital content engages and inspires today’s tech-savvy students in exciting new ways that transform classroom instruction,” said Kristi Tankersley, Title I Reading Specialist, Pocahontas County Schools, WV. “This resource helps our educators create the modern digital learning environments that build the skills our students need for college, careers, and citizenship.”

A complete digital solution built from the ground-up, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook series helps educators transform science instruction. Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, and interactives with hands-on activities, as well as virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich, engaging learning experiences for all students. Additional student features include bilingual text-to-speech and leveled reading tools, and note-taking, and highlighting capabilities. Embedded formative assessment opportunities help educators monitor student progress, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbook works on any device and can be implemented in a variety of instructional settings.

A study conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC found that usage of Science Techbook is associated with higher science achievement scores in South Carolina elementary school students. After one year of implementation in the state’s Rock Hill Schools, fourth grade students whose teachers used Discovery Education Science Techbook scored higher on average on the 2013 Science Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) than students whose teachers did not use Science Techbook. Techbooks are also a substantially less expensive option per student at nearly half the cost of a traditional textbook, with additional savings derived from a lack of textbook replacement or inventory costs.

Discovery Education understands that teacher engagement is critical to implementing successful learning initiatives.  Therefore, all Techbooks include research-based professional development that supports educators as they integrate new digital content and resources into classroom instruction. The Discovery Educator Network (DEN), a global community of education professionals, further connects teachers and administrators around the world with social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events that inspire innovation and facilitates idea sharing.

“The West Virginia Department of Education’s adoption of the Science Techbook for statewide use is the latest indication of the nationwide shift to digital content as a core instructional resource,” said Kelly Burleson, Manager of Education Partnerships at Discovery Education. “While Discovery Education has for years partnered with school systems across the state to provide dynamic digital content and  professional development that supports the success of all learners, we now also look forward to transforming science instruction with the Science Techbook.”
