– Access to Award-Winning Science Digital Textbook and New Professional Learning Program Helps Educators Prepare all Students for College and Careers –

Silver Spring, MD (May 25, 2016) – Arkansas’ Rogers Public Schools (RPS) today announced an expansion of its partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. In the latest phase of this collaboration, RPS is empowering educators at all of the district’s 15 elementary schools to create authentic digital learning environments with Discovery Education’s Science Techbook. To further accelerate the district’s efforts to prepare all students for success beyond graduation, RPS elementary educators will develop the district’s culture of STEM education by participating in Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corps. A four-year professional learning program, the STEM Leader Corps develops and nurtures teachers and administrators as they build a culture of STEM teaching and learning in their school system.

This expanded partnership supports elements of RPS’ Strategic Plan, which guides the school systems’ efforts to increase student achievement, close achievement gaps, and prepare all students for college and/or successful careers. First developed in 2005, the plan’s specific objectives for 2015-2016 include increasing the use of effective instructional practices; exploring and developing district-wide STEM initiatives; continuing to develop leadership capacity in the district; and becoming a premier school district in the use of technology to support student learning.  To support this plan, RPS began integrating Discovery Education’s digital Social Studies Techbook into middle school classroom instruction at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year.

“Discovery Education’s combination of dynamic digital textbooks and professional development is helping our teachers deliver the best possible instruction and challenging our students to realize their fullest potential in this ever-changing world,” said Dr. Virginia Abernathy, Assistant Superintendent at Rogers Public Schools. “Rogers Public Schools is pleased to expand our successful collaboration with Discovery Education, as they are a valuable partner supporting our efforts to provide an environment of educational excellence where all belong, all learn and all succeed.”

A complete digital solution built from the ground-up, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook series helps educators transform science instruction. Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, and interactives with hands-on activities, as well as virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich, engaging learning experiences for all students. Additional student features include bilingual text-to-speech and leveled reading tools, and note-taking, and highlighting capabilities. Embedded formative assessment opportunities help educators monitor student progress, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbook works on any device and can be implemented in a variety of instructional settings.

Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corps offers participating educators robust professional development opportunities, job-embedded instructional coaching, and administrative leadership support. Through their engagement in the program, educators will learn how to develop high-quality STEM lessons, transdisciplinary units, and the leadership skills to grow a culture of STEM teaching and learning in their school system. More than 60 educators from each of the district’s 15 elementary schools will serve as teacher-leaders and will progress through the STEM Leader Corps over a period of four years. Discovery Education experts will work closely with these teacher-leaders to establish ‘learning lab’ classrooms in their school. These classrooms will provide opportunities for colleagues to observe and collaborate on the instructional strategies demonstrated and modeled in the “learning lab”, so they can apply similar teaching strategies in their own classrooms and share with their peers district-wide.

Discovery Education is also supporting the RPS team as they engage members of their community in efforts to enhance STEM instruction.  Through a series of community-focused STEM events, local stakeholders will explore STEM education through hands-on activities, connect with local experts, and build a shared vision for STEM teaching and learning in their schools. These activities help community members understand how this four-year partnership transforms teaching and learning, and how STEM education prepares students for success beyond graduation.

As part of this expansion, the Discovery Education Community will continue supporting RPS educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to be a part of Rogers Public Schools’ efforts to prepare all students for future success,” said Amy Knower, director of partnerships at Discovery Education. “By combining sustained professional development with dynamic digital content, the RPS team is creating authentic digital learning spaces that will engage today’s learners and propel student achievement.”

'Careers Beyond the Court’ Provides Students, Educators and Families Nationwide Digital Resources Highlighting Careers in Tennis and Beyond

Silver Spring, MD (May 18, 2016) – The United States Tennis Association (USTA), the national governing body for the sport of tennis, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today the launch of an all new educational initiative, Careers Beyond the Court. Available at no cost, the program provides high school students, educators and families engaging resources that give an all-access look into the many career opportunities available in the tennis industry. Careers Beyond the Court is the USTA’s first partnership with a global education company, and includes video vignettes, accompanying career profiles, industry guides and a list of colleges with specific degrees to consider.

Resources to Introduce Careers Beyond the Court:

  • Bell Ringer Vignettes. Four different professional career areas in the tennis industry are highlighted in 1-2 minute vignettes, from youth development and technical innovations, to hospitality and coaching. Go one-on-one with USTA staff and tennis industry leaders and experts.
  • Vignette Companion Guides. More detailed information about each tennis professional’s roles and responsibilities, skills and interests and recent innovations in the professional tennis industry, as well as their advice for current high school students accompanies each video.

Guides to Pursue Careers Beyond the Court:

  • Career Pathways. Teachers, guidance counselors and families alike can use these guides to highlight the technical innovations defining the sport today, the complex business skills necessary, potential career paths and how a talent for helping others could make students a perfect ambassador for the sport they love.
  • Focused colleges and universities.  Colleges and universities with specific degrees and programs in professional tennis management are highlighted including Ferris State University, Methodist University, Berry College, Rosen College of Hospitality Management: UCF and Grand Canyon University. All of these institutions assist students with networking, paid internships, and job placement opportunities in the professional tennis industry.

“I’m really excited about the connection between USTA and Discovery Education and their new program ‘Careers Beyond the Court,’” said Rob Lamb, science teacher and head track coach at Pattonville High School of Pattonville School District in St. Louis, Mo.  “Many people think that if you’re not on the court, that you’re not really involved.  With this program, students’ eyes are opened at the career possibilities in this industry.  Plus there are so many technological aspects that I will be able to use in my classroom, such as my favorite lesson of slow motion capture of someone serving, then breaking that down to showing forces of friction and muscle action happening.”

Resources available through Careers Beyond the Court are designed to build students’ excitement and skills in the professional tennis industry, and offer a holistic look at the industry’s wide-range of career opportunities. With high quality lesson plans, the program lays out the critical roles needed in this sport, beyond just professional play.

“To develop the next generation of leaders in our sport, it is essential to provide professional development programs and education,” said Scott Schultz, Managing Director, USTAU. “We are extremely proud to team up with Discovery Education to provide high school students the resources and skills to achieve success in the tennis industry.”

Now available to schools and families nationwide,  Decoding Cancer is powered by BioCONECT (Biology of Cancer, Online Education Connecting Teens), an inquiry-based biology curriculum for high school students developed by the LIFE Center at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Rutgers School of Public Health, in collaboration with the Val Skinner Foundation. The program was successfully piloted in schools in New Jersey, South Carolina and Florida.

Through the curriculum, students develop problem-solving and decision-making skills with real-life applications, apply their knowledge of biology, expand their understanding of genetics, explore relationships between science and technology, and learn about health-related careers. Decoding Cancer featuring BioCONECT teaches students how cancer develops, how to identify risk factors for cancer and allows them to investigate ways to reduce cancer risk. Discovery Education will amplify Decoding Cancer by extending the discussion into high school classrooms nationwide.

“By reaching kids at a young age and educating them on the science of cancer, we are also helping them become aware of the critical importance of early detection,” said Val Skinner. “BioCONECT has proven to be an incredibly effective tool in classrooms through our pilot program and the partnership with Discovery Education now gives the program, now called Decoding Cancer, a much-needed national platform.”

According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 40% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes. Decoding Cancer facilitates meaningful discussions about this important topic among high school teachers, students, and families through a powerful combination of digital resources including:

  • Dynamic lesson plans: Dynamic lesson plans with accompanying teacher guides present topics including genetics, diagnosis, treatment and risk reduction. Fully aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), the interactive lessons are designed to enhance existing high school science and biology curricula. The plans are accessible on DecodingCancer.org and will also be available to half of U.S. classrooms through Discovery Education’s award-winning Streaming Plus service.
  • Health and biomedical career profiles: More than a dozen profiles offer students a look into exciting and rewarding careers in the health and biomedical fields, such as a physician, pharmacist, researcher and social worker. Profiles include high school courses to consider, an average annual salary range, and a 'day in the life' snapshot.
  • Family discussion guide: This guide offers thoughtful advice to adults on the best way to address the topic of cancer when a student is personally affected, and equips families with tools to facilitate meaningful conversations about this sensitive issue.
  • Virtual lab (COMING SOON): This virtual lab will allow students to act as virtual physicians and technicians. Students will test tissue samples from different breast cancer patients with the goal of determining possible treatment approaches based on the results.

“Cancer touches and deeply affects millions of people across the nation each and every day,” said Mark Case, science teacher at North Carolina’s Guilford County Schools. “That’s why it’s essential that we support the study of cancer in the classroom today and empower educators with engaging, dynamic tools they can easily integrate into instruction to teach their students about this topic and help them understand the emotional affects. I’m looking forward to using these cutting-edge resources in my classroom to help deepen my students’ understanding of the science behind cancer.”

“We are thrilled to be partnering with these outstanding organizations to bring BioCONECT to a national audience,” said Deborah Toppmeyer, MD, Director of the LIFE Center and Chief Medical Officer at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. “Educating students about breast cancer, its risk factors and how to prevent it will hopefully lead to a better understanding of the disease and improved early detection.”

-Registration Opens for Premier Research Competition, Chance to Win College Scholarships of up to $100,000-

-Regional Competition Rounds will be Conducted Virtually-

ISELIN, N.J., May 3, 2016 — Registration has opened for The 2016 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology the nation's premier science research competition for high school students.

The Siemens Competition, established in 1999, is a signature program of the Siemens Foundation, administered by Discovery Education. Each year, the program invites high school students nationwide to submit original research projects in math, science and technology for the opportunity to win college scholarships ranging from $1,000 up to $100,000. Students can compete as individuals or as members of a team.

As with last year, the regional competition rounds will be held on-line in a secure virtual environment.  Participants will present their projects via a secure cloud-based technology platform to a panel of judges who will be assembled at regional hosting universities in November.

The regional judging will take place at six leading research universities across the country:  California Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame and The University of Texas at Austin.

Winners of these Regional Finals will be invited to present their research in-person to nationally renowned scientists and mathematicians at the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in December at The George Washington University.

Last year’s Grand Prize individual winner utilized small plastic beads to remove sulfamethazine, a common contaminant, from drinking water in a way that was reusable and scalable in many of today’s water delivery systems. The winning team utilized a loofah sponge to help clean up oil from oil spills and then turn it into electricity which could be used to generate clean power i.e. for remote sensors.  The previous year, winning teams identified an approach to improve program obstacle avoidance for drones and self-driving cars, and a computer model that simulates how a tree will grow in varying conditions, which could improve current practices in harvesting timber and growing tree-based foods.

Video, photos and bios of the 2015 finalists are available at:  http://siemensusa.synapticdigital.com/US/SIEMENS-FOUNDATION/2015-siemens-competition-national-finals—gwu/s/3FD5D410-2F23-4EA7-97CC-B6A25DDDCCD0
