As MGSD’s Superintendent, Dr. Edwards oversaw the creation of authentic digital learning environments that engaged all students and improved academic outcomes. In his new role at Discovery Education, Dr. Edwards will work with school systems worldwide to successfully implement similar digital transitions supporting the success of each learner.  He will also lead the continued evolution, expansion, and implementation of Discovery Education’s strategic vision for transforming teaching and learning through its unique combination of professional development, award-winning digital content, and educator community.

In addition, Dr. Edwards will provide strategic guidance and support across all aspects of the organization including, but not limited to, educational partnerships, state outreach, product development, partner success, and corporate partnerships.  His deep expertise in managing district-wide digital transitions, implementing successful 1-to-1 programs, designing effective professional development initiatives, and purposefully integrating digital content into classroom instruction will further enhance Discovery Education’s efforts to support educators and students worldwide.

A 38-year veteran of public education, Dr. Edwards previously served for nine years as MGSD’s superintendent. Under his leadership, the district was an early adopter of digital content as a core instructional resource, which helped drive dramatic increases in test scores, graduation rates and college readiness. Since 2007, the number of MGSD students testing proficient or advanced on state end-of-grade tests has increased by 16 percentage points from 73 percent to 89 percent, second best in the state of North Carolina despite being ranked 100th out of 115 districts in funding.

“Discovery Education is perfectly positioned to transform teaching and learning on a global scale and is the ideal place for me to broaden my impact on education and continue my personal mission to see that every child, every day, has the opportunity to receive the education they demand and deserve,” said Dr. Edwards.  “I am excited to embrace the challenges of my next role and will always be extremely proud of the groundbreaking results we accomplished as a team in Mooresville, and will forever be grateful to the Mooresville community for their tremendous support.”

A highly respected and sought-after global spokesperson on digital transformation, Dr. Edwards has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career.  In 2001 he was named Virginia State Superintendent of the Year, and in 2002, he was recognized as a Tech Savvy Superintendent by eSchool News and received the Community Leader Award from the Mooresville NAACP. In 2013, he was named National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators and Common Sense Media’s Educator of the Year. In 2014, Dr. Edwards was the recipient of the North Carolina Public School Forum’s 2014 Jay Robinson Education Leadership Award.  Most recently, he received a Bammy from the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences and was named Technology Educator of the Year by the NC Technology Association.  Dr. Edwards has also briefed Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on the digital conversion and was asked to help launch Digital Promise at the White House. He is the author of Every Child, Every Day: A Digital Conversion Model for Student Achievement.

“Discovery Education is thrilled to welcome Mark to our innovative and growing global team,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education. “His work in transforming teaching and learning in Mooresville, combined with his efforts to support the work of the educators from around the globe who have visited the district to witness first-hand his teams’ impact on students, makes him the perfect leader to support Discovery Education’s vision for the future of education.   He will be a tremendous asset to both Discovery Education and the 30 million students and 3 million educators we serve around the world.”

Before coming to Mooresville, Dr. Edwards served as dean for the University of Northern Alabama’s School of Education, and superintendent of Virginia’s Henrico Public Schools and Danville Public Schools.

Dr. Edwards holds a Ph.D. in education from Vanderbilt University, a M.Ed. in administration and supervision from Tennessee Technical University, and a B.S. in education from the University of Tennessee.  He will be based in Discovery Education’s office in Charlotte, N.C., and will report directly to Discovery Education’s President and CEO Bill Goodwyn.

-Guided by Educator’s Best Practices and Latest Research, New Features Added by Discovery Education’s Instructional Experts Support Pedagogical Best Practices-

Silver Spring, Md. (June 27, 2016) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced significant enhancements to the instructional content and design of the award-winning Discovery Education Science Techbook™. A complete digital solution built from the ground-up, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook combines different types of media to explain and reinforce complex science concepts.

Guided by pedagogical best practices, educator feedback, and the latest research synthesized by Discovery Education’s instructional experts, these updates will change the way students and teachers experience science instruction. Among the enhancements is a new, simplified design that provides all students an even easier-to-follow experience, accessible from any device. Science Techbook’s streamlined look and feel helps students find and focus on what’s important. Additional enhancements to Science Techbook include:

  • New STEM resources across STEM subjects and careers: Discovery Education is introducing two new authentic resources that drive student engagement in STEM instruction and provide students context for learning. STEM Project Starters allow students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. STEM In Action helps students connect their work with STEM careers, developing clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.”

  • New phenomena-driven, relevant learning experiences: Phenomena in science are instances in the real-world that may seem extraordinary to students, such as weather events, animal migration, and lunar eclipses. Each concept in the enhanced Science Techbook now begins with a phenomena-driven question that acts as a catalyst for the inquiry process, triggering students’ natural sense of curiosity and wonder.

  • New features supporting differentiated instruction:  The Core Interactive Text feature blends text with multimedia resources and focuses on phenomena, problems, and questions that are relevant to students of different learning styles and abilities. Students can have the text read aloud, highlight text, or add sticky notes. Text can also be modified for different reading levels or viewed in Spanish. Also, an extensive collection of Technology Enhanced Items (TEIs) are embedded in digital text to help teachers uncover what students already know about a concept and to support further interaction and understanding.

“The new enhancements to Discovery Education’s Science Techbook make this breakthrough service even more intuitive and accessible,” said Jennifer Zolikoff, teacher at Scottsdale Unified School District’s Anasazi Elementary in Arizona. “The expanded content and functionality will help me even more deeply engage my students in science instruction, and help improve overall academic achievement, no matter the student’s learning style.”

Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Embedded formative assessment opportunities help educators monitor student progress, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbook works on any device and can be implemented in a variety of instructional settings.

Discovery Education understands the importance of supporting educators as they implement new learning initiatives, so each Science Techbook includes research-based professional development that empowers teachers to effectively integrate new digital content and resources into classroom instruction. The Discovery Education Community, a global network of education professionals, provides additional assistance to educators as they transform learning experiences with digital media. By connecting members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, the Discovery Education Community fosters valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration among participants.

A study conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC found that usage of Science Techbook is associated with higher science achievement scores in South Carolina elementary school students. After one year of implementation in the state’s Rock Hill Schools, fourth grade students whose teachers used Discovery Education Science Techbook scored higher on average on the 2013 Science Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) than students whose teachers did not use Science Techbook.

“Since its debut in 2011, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook has empowered educators to transform science instruction through a unique combination of high-quality digital content and sustained, job-embedded professional development,” said Kelli Campbell, senior vice president and digital learning officer at Discovery Education. “The latest enhancements to the Science Techbook represent a quantum leap forward in Discovery Education’s ongoing effort to provide educators the resources they need to improve student engagement, address multiple learning styles and advance student achievement in their classrooms.”

– School System Adopts Dynamic Digital Math Textbook to Assist Educators as They Shift Instruction to Better Prepare Students for Success Beyond Graduation –

Silver Spring, Md. (June 23, 2016)New Mexico’s Roswell Independent School District (RISD) announced today an expansion of its two-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.  Beginning next school year, RISD will begin integrating the Discovery Education Math Techbook™ into teaching and learning at all of its middle schools. Math Techbook transforms the way students and teachers experience math through engaging instructional strategies and real-world problems that motivate and excite students with diverse learning styles.

Discovery Education’s expanded partnership with Roswell Independent School District supports the district’s transition to the New Mexico Common Core State Standards, which call for several key shifts in math instruction. These shifts include coherent progressions from grade to grade so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years, and increased rigor, which is defined as the pursuit of conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and application with equal intensity. The district is also focused on improving literacy, with one of its main goals being that all students increase their comprehension and application of informational reading material across the curriculum. To support this effort, middle school educators will in the 2016-2017 school year begin using the Math Techbook as a core instructional resource. Educators and students districtwide will also continue using Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas which was introduced into district classrooms in 2014, as they transition to the new standards.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Discovery Education, as it has been instrumental in our ongoing effort to prepare all students to succeed in college, career and life,” said Dr. Arsenio Romero, Assistant Superintendent at Roswell Independent School District. “Discovery Education’s Math Techbook will not only empower our teachers to bring mathematic concepts and ideas to life for all learners, but also help grow the problem-solving and critical-thinking skills students need beyond the classroom.”

Developed by Discovery Education’s team of expert math educators with the input of teachers and administrators from across the country, Math Techbook uses a Discover, Practice, Apply inquiry-based cycle that is built on the three pillars of rigor: conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application. Technology enhanced items and formative assessments are woven throughout the entire instructional cycle and teachers have a data dashboard to monitor student progress instantaneously. Math Techbook engages students with real-world problems worth solving while supporting any device, anywhere, anytime in any secondary instructional setting.

In addition to dynamic, standards-aligned content, interactives, videos, digital tools, and game-like activities that increase students’ motivation to learn math, Math Techbook includes useful student tools such as a graphing calculator, a geometry tool, a whiteboard tool, and a matrix solver. A Student Dashboard embedded within the Math Techbook helps students track their individual progress and take responsibility for their learning. Math Techbook also supports English language learners and struggling readers through an interactive glossary which includes illustrated and animated definitions to provide visual support to students, as well as definitions translated into Spanish.

To promote the effective integration of digital textbooks into classroom instruction, Discovery Education is providing RISD educators using the Math Techbook customized, job-embedded professional development.  This professional development helps educators explore the engaging resources embedded in Discovery Education Math Techbook and provides the strategies needed to engage students in inquiry-based instruction, math investigations, and collaborative, real-world problem-solving on any device and in any classroom configuration.

Additionally, the Discovery Education Community will continue supporting RISD educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experience with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to be a part of Roswell Independent School District’s drive to transform math instruction,” said Amy Knower, Director of Partnerships at Discovery Education. “Together, we are providing educators the engaging, high-quality resources they need to connect students to the real-world mathematics necessary to achieve college and career readiness.”

-‘Digital Leader Corps’ Builds Capacity of Nearly 500 Educators From All 87 District Schools to Effectively Integrate Digital Content and Meet Needs of All Learners-

Silver Spring, Md. (June 17, 2016)  – The Greenville County Schools (GCS), South Carolina’s largest school system, today announced an expansion of its 14-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. In the latest phase of this collaboration, 480 educators from all 87 district schools will participate in Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps. A comprehensive professional development system, Digital Leader Corps supports the development of teacher-leaders as they serve as change agents powering the district's transition to dynamic digital learning environments.

Since 2002, all K-12 classrooms in GCS have had access to engaging digital content through Discovery Education Streaming Plus, an award-winning, comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas. Last year, ten GCS schools piloted Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps. Beginning in August 2016, 77 additional schools will implement the Digital Leader Corps model, providing 330 new teacher leaders and 150 administrators with nearly 2,800 days of professional development over the next three years.

This expanded partnership supports the 2015-2020 Greenville County Schools’ Technology Plan, which calls for the development of ongoing and sustained professional development programs for all educators. Over the next several years, the district will utilize current and emerging technologies to create learner-centered instructional environments that enhance academic achievement, while growing and sustaining teachers’ capacity to effectively integrate technology into instruction.

Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps helps school systems develop a network of teacher-leaders prepared to design and implement successful and innovative teaching strategies to be shared with their peers.  Featuring a unique combination of professional learning, pedagogy and tools, Digital Leader Corps offers participating educators proven approaches to integrating educational technologies and digital media into classroom instruction.  These approaches are then practiced in educator created, student-centered Learning Labs. In these labs, teachers practice and adapt their new skills in a classroom setting before sharing their successes broadly with their colleagues. The Digital Leader Corps program provides teachers with continuous customized, job-embedded consultation throughout the process with on-going modeling, coaching and feedback from Discovery Education experts in the pre-planning, stakeholder communications and implementation phases.

“The Greenville County Schools are committed to creating dynamic digital learning environments that engage, inspire, and prepare all students for success beyond the classroom,” said Jeff McCoy, Executive Director of Academic Innovation and Technology at Greenville County Schools. “With Discovery Education’s dynamic digital resources and robust professional development, we are empowering our teachers to continue building a strong culture of teaching and learning that engages today’s media-savvy students.”

In addition, the Discovery Education Community will continue to support GCS’ educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to continue supporting Greenville County Schools’ efforts to build teacher capacity and improve student achievement,” said Rob Warren, Vice President of Education Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We applaud Superintendent Royster and the entire team at Greenville County Schools for their dedication to empowering all teachers and students with the professional development and digital tools that foster authentic, real-world learning experiences.”

Combination of Dynamic Digital Textbooks and Professional Learning Program Will Support District Educators As They Build Innovative STEM Learning Environments-

Silver Spring, Md. (June 14, 2016)Louisiana’s Caddo Parish Public Schools today announced an expansion of its eight-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. In the latest phase of this relationship, Caddo Parish schools and Discovery Education are launching the iLearn initiative, which will build a strong culture of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) districtwide.

To support this new initiative, Caddo Parish educators will, beginning in the 2016-2017 school year, integrate Discovery Education’s Science Techbook (Grades K-12), Social Studies Techbook (Grades 6-8) and Math Techbook (Grades 6-12) into classroom instruction. In addition, 44 Caddo educators will help develop the district’s culture of STEM education by participating in Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corps, a six-year professional learning program that develops and nurtures teachers and administrators as they build a culture of STEM teaching and learning in their school system.

This expanded partnership directly supports Caddo Parish’s five-year strategic plan. Entitled Re-Imagine Caddo: The Plan for Excellence, this document sets the direction for the district’s efforts to better meet the needs of individual students and improve the school system as a whole. Developed with extensive input from community members, parents, students, educators, and staff, this multifaceted plan will shape future rigorous instructional programs that accelerate academic opportunities and help reinvent learning environments that prepare all learners with the skills and capacities for life beyond the classroom.

“We are pleased to continue our important strategic partnership with Discovery Education,” said Caddo Parish Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lamar Goree. “Their dynamic digital resources and comprehensive professional development help our educators equip all students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes they need to succeed as productive and responsible citizens in a local, national, and global society.”

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and are updated regularly at no cost.  The series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. The Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Techbooks are platform neutral and can be used in 1:1 or 1-to-many configurations and in any instructional environment.

The Social Studies Techbook series uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing and problem solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, a multimedia reference library, interactive maps and informational texts.  Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the 5E model, the Science Techbook, through hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities, helps teach students to read, write, and think like scientists. Math Techbook, the latest addition to Discovery Education’s award-winning line of digital textbooks, transforms the way students and teachers experience math through engaging instructional strategies and real-world problems that motivate and excite students with diverse learning styles.

To support educators as they implement these new digital resources, Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corps will offer Caddo Parish educators robust professional development opportunities, job-embedded instructional coaching, and administrative leadership support. Through their engagement in the program, educators will develop high-quality STEM lessons, transdisciplinary units, and the leadership skills to grow a culture of STEM teaching and learning in their school system. 44 educators from ten of the district’s schools will serve as teacher-leaders who will progress through the STEM Leader Corps over a period of six years. Discovery Education experts will work closely with these teacher-leaders to establish ‘learning lab’ classrooms in their school. These classrooms will provide opportunities for colleagues to observe and collaborate on the instructional strategies demonstrated and modeled in the “learning lab", so they can apply similar teaching strategies in their own classrooms and share with their peers district-wide.

In addition, the Discovery Education Community will continue supporting Caddo Parish Public Schools’ educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration. District educators and students will also continue using Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas, which was first introduced into Caddo schools in 2008.

“Discovery Education shares Caddo Parish Public Schools’ vision for combining engaging digital content and robust professional development to transform teaching and learning,” said Jason Sinquefield, manager of education partnerships at Discovery Education.  “We look forward to continuing to support Dr. Goree and his talented team as they accelerate student engagement and achievement district-wide through iLearn.”

McREL forms strategic partnership with Discovery Education supporting the creation of dynamic digital learning environments

(June 7, 2016) – Today, McREL International announced a new strategic partnership with Discovery Education supporting teacher leaders nationwide as they create dynamic digital learning environments.  Through this new collaboration, McREL will support Discovery Education’s global efforts to grow the capacity of teacher leaders by developing innovation configuration (IC) maps for Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps.

Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps is a comprehensive professional development model that builds and nurtures a network of teacher leaders to design and implement successful and innovative teaching strategies that can be shared with their peers. Featuring a unique combination of professional learning, pedagogy and tools, the Digital Leader Corps helps participating educators learn to integrate educational technologies and digital media into classroom instruction and create dynamic learning environments that meet the needs of all students. Digital Leader Corps provides participants with continuous customized, job-embedded consultation throughout the process with on-going modeling, coaching and feedback from Discovery Education experts in the pre-planning, stakeholder communications, and implementation phases.

IC maps identify the major components of an innovation, capturing current practice and describing the steps for achieving implementation goals—placing these on a continuum, with weak or low-level implementation at one end and ideal or high-fidelity implementation at the other. The construction and use of an IC map communicates a common set of behaviors and expectations related to the implementation of a new initiative, such as the integration of technology with instruction, and provides a unique tool for teacher reflection, feedback, and assistance throughout the implementation process.

With McREL’s support, Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps participants are increasing their capacity to develop and use IC maps, which will help drive even deeper implementation of Digital Leader Corps and other improvement initiatives guiding the professional learning of digital leaders.

“By using IC maps within the Digital Leader Corps environment, participating teacher leaders will gain additional clarity on the key components of their roles and have a pathway of clearly described, increasingly sophisticated behaviors that can be supported and strengthened for greater impact and implementation success,” said Dr. Dale Lewis, a senior director at McREL who is leading the project with Discovery Education.

“Discovery Education is pleased to work with McREL to integrate innovation configuration maps into the powerful Digital Leader Corps model,” explained Dr. Karen Beerer, Discovery Education’s vice president of learning and development.  “The IC maps are another powerful tool supporting the growth of the strong pedagogical practice needed to create the dynamic digital learning environments today’s students need for college and career readiness.”
