-Approval of Award Winning Digital Textbook Series Empowers Educators to Create Modern Learning Environments that Support Instructional Shifts Required by the NGSS as Approved by Oregon-

Silver Spring, Md. (October 31, 2016) – Following a rigorous evaluation, the Oregon State Board of Education has approved new editions of the Discovery Education Science Techbook™ for statewide use as a core instructional K-12 resource through its state adoption process.  Completely aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as adopted by the state of Oregon, these latest additions to Discovery Education’s award-winning line of digital textbooks changes the way students and educators experience science.  Currently, Discovery Education Techbooks are used by more than 3 million students in all 50 U.S. states and several Canadian Provinces.

During its latest approval cycle, the Oregon State Board of Education adopted all Discovery Education Science Techbooks for classroom use, giving school districts across the state the option to purchase and integrate the K-8 Science Techbook, as well as the High School Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Space Science Techbooks into classroom instruction.  School districts across Oregon now have the option to purchase and integrate these latest Science Techbooks into teaching and learning.  The award-winning Discovery Education Textbook series is a fully interactive digital solution that replaces traditional textbooks.  Currently, Discovery Education’s Math Techbooks, which were adopted by the Oregon State Board of Education as a core instructional resource in 2015, are also approved for classroom use statewide.

The Science Techbooks aligned to the NGSS as adopted by the state of Oregon were developed by Discovery Education’s team of expert science educators with the input of teachers and administrators.  Their rich, standards aligned content includes video, audio, text and interactives with hands-on activities, as well as virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and create a rich and engaging learning experiences for all students.

These new Science Techbooks include valuable STEM resources as well. STEM Project Starters encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. In addition, the STEM In Action resources help students connect their work to STEM careers, which promotes a clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.”  Embedded formative assessment opportunities that help educators monitor student progress are embedded into each Techbook, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbooks work on any device and can be implemented in any instructional setting.

The Science Techbooks aligned to the NGSS as adopted by Oregon fully support the instructional shifts required by the new standards, embrace the philosophy of three-dimensional learning, and are designed to help educators adapt their classroom practice to meet the standards.  In addition to content chosen to directly support the standards, the Model Lessons within the Science Techbooks reflect the interconnectedness of the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI) and Cross-Cutting Concepts (CCC) and illustrate what these mean in practice for educators.  With these special editions of the Science Techbook, Oregon Students will become immersed in phenomenon-driven, relevant learning experiences, develop their own scientific explanations through a variety of activities such as exploring the overarching themes of science, learn to ask questions and make claims, and identify the cross-cutting connections between sciences.

Discovery Education understands that teacher engagement is critical to implementing successful learning initiatives.  Therefore, all Techbooks include research-based professional development that supports educators as they integrate new digital content and resources into classroom instruction. The Discovery Education Community, a global community of education professionals, further connects teachers and administrators around the world with social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events that inspire innovation and facilitates idea sharing.

A study conducted by independent research firm Merola Research, LLC found that usage of the Science Techbook is associated with higher science achievement scores in South Carolina elementary school students. After one year of implementation in the state’s Rock Hill Schools, fourth grade students whose teachers used Discovery Education Science Techbook scored higher on average on the 2013 Science Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) than students whose teachers did not use Science Techbook. Techbooks are also a substantially less expensive option per student at nearly half the cost of a traditional textbook, with additional savings derived from a lack of textbook replacement or inventory costs.

“Discovery Education thanks the Oregon State Board of Education for their exhaustive evaluation of the Science Techbooks,” said Jolie Vigen, Director of Educational Partnerships at Discovery Education.  “Their review and approval of these outstanding core instructional resources gives educators statewide access to engaging content 100% aligned to the NGSS as adopted by the state of Oregon that they can use to create the modern science classrooms today’s students need for future success.”

–National Initiative for Preteens, Teens, Educators and Parents Offers Standards-Aligned Resources to Address the Science of Addiction and Kick Start Lifesaving Conversations on Prescription Opioid Misuse and Heroin Use; Initiative Announced During Live Virtual Town Hall Event–

SILVER SPRING, Md. [October 25, 2016] – To combat America’s rapidly growing opioid and heroin epidemic, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced a new joint nationwide education initiative called “Operation Prevention.” This announcement was made as part of a live town hall event that was broadcasted from Virginia’s McLean High School and streamed into classrooms nationwide.

Designed for middle and high school students, educators and parents nationwide, Operation Prevention is an important effort to educate students about the science behind drug addiction and its impact, with resources that help initiate lifesaving conversations in the home and classroom.  The no-cost initiative offers standards-aligned classroom resources including digital lesson plans, and a parent toolkit that offers information on the warning signs of substance misuse disorder and a guide to prevention and intervention. In December, a student video challenge will also launch.

Every day in America, 44 people die as a result of prescription opioid overdose, and heroin use has more than doubled among young adults ages 18-25 in the past decade (Center for Disease Control and Prevention). The epidemic cuts across lines of age, race, gender and wealth, afflicting cities as well as suburbs, rural towns as well as tribal communities. Now, Operation Prevention will provide students with the tools they need to make smart, informed choices when they are prescribed or presented with the opportunity to experiment with opioids. Materials include:

Educator Lesson Plans – Standards-aligned digital lesson plans bring powerful real-world context to science and health classrooms by equipping teachers with dynamic curricula on the science behind opioids’ physical and neurological effects. Companion instructor guides are also available to support educators as they integrate these lessons into classroom instruction.

Interactive Student Resources – A self-paced e-learning module combines video, animation and interactive elements to offer students an engaging learning experience that encourages them to investigate the impacts of opioids on the brain and body. Accompanying this module are pre-and-post-assessments as well as companion guides for educators and parents to utilize to best support students’ experience.

Parent Toolkit – Designed to empower parents with knowledge and resources to begin lifesaving conversations, detect warning signs and take action, the Operation Prevention Parent Toolkit includes family discussion starters, a detailed guide of warning signs and what they mean, and prevention and intervention tools that allows parents to proactively take action through research-based strategies.

“Operation Prevention is a free science-based education tool for students, teachers, and parents,” said DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg. “In partnership with Discovery Education, we will illuminate the opioid epidemic by teaching kids the science behind it."

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration on this important and potentially life-saving initiative,” said Bill Goodwyn, president and CEO, Discovery Education. “Operation Prevention will provide teachers, students, and families the engaging digital resources they need to combat the national opioid addiction epidemic.”

Today’s launch announcement was broadcasted from Fairfax County Public School’s McLean High School in Virginia. It connected students with a panel of experts including Louis J. Milione, DEA Assistant Administrator, Office of Diversion Control; Melvin Patterson, DEA special agent; Peggy Compton, Associate Dean at Georgetown University’s School of Nursing and Health Studies; Jamie Lane, Assistant Principal, McLean High School; and a former teen user, who discussed how prescription opioids and heroin affect the brain and behavior, and answered questions submitted in real time by participating students nationwide. An archive of the event is available for year-round use at: http://operationprevention.com/virtual-field-trip.

“Substance abuse touches everyone and too often it is unrecognized as families are left to deal with the consequences on their own,” said McLean High School Principal Ellen Reilly. “By bringing this issue to the McLean school community during today’s town hall and to school communities worldwide, this is a unique opportunity to acknowledge and understand a very real crisis. Operation Prevention will increase awareness of this crisis which is key to developing solutions for those struggling with this issue.”

More information on Operation Prevention and access to the program’s free resources are available at http://operationprevention.com/. For other Discovery Education initiatives, visit www.discoveryeducation.com.

dara_klatt@discovery.com, 202-607-4450

— Maanasa Mendu named America’s Top Young Scientist in Nation’s Premier Middle School Science Competition for her invention of HARVEST, a device that provides remote, global energy solutions by gathering unused solar and wind energy that is already around us to power rural and remote locations —

Silver Spring, Md. and St. Paul, Minn. (October 18, 2016) – Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) and 3M (@3M) have named 13-year-old Maanasa Mendu from Mason, OH, the winner of the 2016 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). Mendu created HARVEST, a bio-inspired energy device that uses solar and wind power to capture energy in the form of wind, rain and sun – and converts it to power.

This innovation was inspired by a visit to India where Maanasa observed many people lacking basic life necessities such as clean water and lighting. Through her invention, Mendu hopes to provide a globally applicable, cost-effective energy source to solve real problems. Mendu’s scientific thinking reflected the competition’s goal of applying science to everyday life, creating a solution that will improve lives and strengthen communities around the globe.

Mendu, a ninth grader at William Mason High School in Mason City School District, competed alongside nine other finalists today during a live competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. She was awarded the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” as well as a $25,000 prize.

During the past three months, Mendu and the other nine finalists had the exclusive opportunity to work directly with a 3M scientist to develop their personal inventions as part of a unique summer mentorship program. Mendu was paired with Margaux Mitera, a 3M Senior Product Development Engineer whose research has helped 3M develop new Post-it® Note products. Each of the students collaborated with some of 3M’s top scientists, who provided guidance as they worked through the scientific process to advance their ideas from a theoretical concept into a physical prototype. Together, the mentors and finalists shared their passion for science, reviewed the scientific process and worked virtually through pre-assigned objectives with resources and support provided by Discovery Education and 3M.

During the final competition hosted by Discovery Education Vice President Lance Rougeux, the finalists presented their completed inventions to an esteemed panel of scientists and leaders from both Discovery Education and 3M, including honorary guest judge Trace Dominguez, producer, writer and host of Discovery’s DNews!. In addition to presenting their prototypes, the ten finalists paired up to compete in an “Applied to Life” challenge through which they combined multiple 3M technologies to solve a real-world problem.

“Witnessing a new generation of young scientists leverage their passion and knowledge is truly inspiring,” said Jon Lindekugel, Senior Vice President, Business Development and Marketing-Sales, 3M. “We know these young scientists learn a lot from the 3M mentors they are paired with as they evolve their science innovations over three months of hard work, and the truth is, we always learn from them as well. It reminds all of us at 3M that when scientists come together, they really can change lives for the better.”

“Each year, the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge reminds us of the inspiring ingenuity that results when we empower our youngest generation to apply science, critical-thinking and creativity to solve real-world problems,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education. “Discovery Education is honored to stand alongside 3M in congratulating Maanasa and the rest of this year’s finalists on their impressive innovations that foreshadow a bright future for our nation.”

The remaining nine finalists also received a variety of prizes from Discovery Education and 3M. The second, third and fourth place winners each received a $1,000 prize and a trip to a taping of a show on Discovery’s family of networks. These extraordinary students are:

-Dynamic Digital Textbooks and Professional Development Support School System’s Efforts to Create Modern Science and Social Studies Learning Environments-

Silver Spring, Md. (October 10, 2016) – Colorado’s St. Vrain Valley School  District (SVVSD) today announced a new partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.

As part of this new relationship, Discovery Education is supporting the district’s continued transition to modern learning environments by empowering the district’s middle school educators to more deeply engage students in science instruction with its award-winning Science Techbook™. In addition, Discovery Education and SVVSD are commencing two year-long pilot review programs, bringing the Science Techbook to high school classrooms, as well as the Social Studies Techbook to middle school classrooms.

SVVD’s new partnership with Discovery Education directly supports the continued implementation of the district’s Learning Technology Plan (LTP).  The LTP, developed by a committee of 33 district teachers, principals, and other staff members, ensures the district’s investment in technology is aligned to instructional priorities and school needs.  The LTP also makes certain students and teachers have the tools they need to investigate, communicate, collaborate, create, model, and explore concepts and content in authentic contexts, and provides all learners with devices they can take home and use to extend learning opportunities beyond the classroom to the entire family.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and are updated regularly at no cost.  The series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. The Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Techbooks are platform neutral and can be used in any classroom configuration or instructional environment.

The Social Studies Techbook series uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy and the analytical writing and problem solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, a multimedia reference library, interactive maps and informational texts.  Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the 5E model, the Science Techbook, through hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities, helps teach students to read, write, and think like scientists.

To ensure each SVVSD teacher is fully supported in their transition to the Techbooks, Discovery Education experts will provide faculty high-quality professional development supporting the integration of the digital textbook into classroom practice.

“St. Vrain Valley School District is committed to creating technology-rich learning experiences that engage students and help them cultivate the critical skills they need for success beyond the classroom,” said Damon Brown, Executive Director of Communications, Human Resources and Risk Management at St. Vrain Valley Schools. “Discovery Education’s dynamic digital resources and professional development are incredibly important to our efforts to create the authentic digital learning environments districtwide that make teaching and learning more engaging and accessible for all.”

In addition, the Discovery Education Community will support SSVD’s educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to be a part of St. Vrain Valley School District’s efforts to equip students with the digital tools and content they need to engage in dynamic learning experiences anytime, anywhere,” said Scott Burns, Manager of Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We are looking forward to supporting their talented team as they empower educators with rich, dynamic digital content they can use to enhance instruction.”

Program empowers students to make a positive environmental impact through standards-aligned lesson plans and interactive classroom activities focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

SILVER SPRING, Md. (October 5, 2016) – Novelis, the world leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today the launch of an all-new aluminum recycling education program, “Life of a Can – A Never Ending Story.” Designed to reinforce the importance of aluminum recycling and empower students to be environmental stewards, this new program offers standards-aligned digital learning tools for classrooms and families nationwide that explore the never-ending lifecycle of a recycled aluminum can and encourage classrooms to implement recycling programs of their own.  The online tool also features national hockey league defenseman, Stanley Cup Champion, and “eco-athlete,” Andrew Ference, to drive home the importance of recycling and underscore our individual impact on the environment.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with Novelis on this nationwide effort to engage students in the importance of our environment and the critical role they can each play to protect and preserve our planet,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president, Discovery Education. “Life of a Can illuminates the core STEM applications utilized in the recycling process, and empowers educators with dynamic digital resources to inspire their students in the exploration of the earth’s natural resources.”

Beyond STEM skills, Life of a Can educates the future generation on key recycling facts such as the $1.5 billion total value of aluminum sent to landfills every year and the end-to-end recycling timeline for a can, while encouraging the development of students’ critical-thinking skills through a holistic look at the recycling process and real-world implications of our actions. Created by Discovery Education’s curriculum experts, this multi-year engagement program offers digital resources designed to stimulate insightful conversations and illustrate STEM at work throughout the aluminum recycling process.

Available at no cost, the new online platform offers the following:

  • Interactive classroom activities – The program’s digital learning tools include a complete suite of standards-aligned free educator resources for upper elementary classrooms, which emphasize key STEM, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills for students focused on environmental subjects like sustainability, manufacturing and product lifecycles. Downloadable classroom activities are designed to complement teachers’ existing lesson plans and explore the unique properties of aluminum and its role in our everyday lives. Life of Can lessons ask students to reflect on their own contribution to trash, strategize how they can improve their current practices and understand the environmental benefits of aluminum recycling. A downloadable Recycling Toolkit allows classrooms to create their own classroom recycling programs. An engaging, hands-on digital interactive module designed to walk students through the recycling process will launch in spring 2017.

  • At-home family resources – Life of a Can’s family extensions encourage students to share their classroom learnings with family members at home through STEM-based activities and family discussion starters that inspire insightful conversations about aluminum and the recycling process. Students will take home a scavenger hunt that illustrates how students’ homes can be powered by the energy saved from aluminum recycling.

  • Video vignette – Featuring National Hockey League defenseman and Stanley Cup Champion Andrew Ference, a self-proclaimed “eco-athlete,” the What’s One Can video highlights how recycling saves energy, investigates everyone’s impact on the environment, and details how all students’ can be champions for the environment.

“Partnering with Discovery Education provides a fantastic opportunity for millions of teachers, students, and their families to understand the true value of aluminum as an infinitely recyclable material,” said David Gill, Vice President and General Manager, Can for Novelis North America. “As the world’s largest aluminum rolled products manufacturer and recycler, Novelis recycles more than 60 billion aluminum cans each year. Through Life of a Can, we are excited to help increase the number of cans recycled throughout the world by inspiring kids to be lifelong recyclers.”

Brandon Wislocki, a fifth grade teacher at Stonegate Elementary School of Irvine Unified School District, Calif. added: “As an educator, I’m thrilled to have these resources to engage my students in sustainability topics and give them an in-depth look at the aluminum recycling process. I look forward to integrating the Life of Can lesson plans and activities into my classroom instruction to reinforce STEM skills utilized in environmental careers, and creating a new recycling program for my classroom.”
