— NBA Game Footage and Statistics Added to Award-Winning Math Techbook To Bring Concepts to Life for Middle and High School Students —

— Initiative Announced with Washington Wizards & Mystics, NBA Legends During Jr. NBA Clinic at John Hayden Johnson Middle School in Washington, D.C. —

NEW YORK & SILVER SPRING, Md. [Nov. 18, 2016] The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital education content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today launched a new multi-year partnership that will deepen middle and high school students’ engagement in mathematics nationwide. In this new collaboration, which harnesses students’ interest in professional basketball to help teach important mathematics concepts, interactive math problems derived from NBA and WNBA game footage and statistics such as points, rebounds, assists and more, have been integrated into Discovery Education’s  Math Techbook™. The latest addition to Discovery Education’s award-winning line of digital textbooks, the Math Techbook transforms the way students and teachers experience math through engaging instructional strategies and real-world problems that motivate and excite students with diverse learning styles. More than 3 million students across all 50 states and several Canadian provinces have access to the series.

This announcement was made during a Jr. NBA clinic at John Hayden Johnson Middle School in Washington, D.C (District of Columbia Public Schools) with special NBA and WNBA guests including Washington Wizards forward Daniel Ochefu; Washington Mystics point guard Ivory Latta; Washington Wizards legends Phil Chenier and Etan Thomas; Hall of Famer and NBA Cares Ambassador Bob Lanier; NBA legend and NBA Cares Ambassador Felipe Lopez; NBA legend and NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations Kiki VanDeWeghe. The Jr. NBA is the league’s youth basketball participation program for boys and girls ages 6-14 which teaches the fundamental skills as well as the core values of the game. At today’s event, participating students competed to solve NBA math problems and tested their shooting, passing, and dribbling skills during an oncourt clinic.

“We are proud to partner with Discovery Education to bring the excitement of the NBA, its teams and players directly to students in classrooms around the country,” said NBA Senior Vice President, Social Responsibility, Todd Jacobson. “Basketball can be a powerful learning tool and these interactive math problems around the game will engage students in fun, creative ways.”

Developed by Discovery Education’s team of expert math educators with the input of teachers and administrators from across the country, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are digital textbooks that support a comprehensive curriculum and are updated regularly at no cost. The Math Techbook engages students with real world problems worth solving, and can be accessed on any device, anywhere, anytime in any instructional setting. In addition to dynamic, standards-aligned content, interactives, videos, and game-like activities that increase students’ motivation to learn math, Math Techbook includes useful student tools such as a graphing calculator, a geometry tool, a whiteboard tool, and a matrix solver.  A Student Dashboard embedded within the Math Techbook helps students track their individual progress and take responsibility for their learning.  Technology enhanced items and formative assessments are woven throughout the entire instructional cycle, and teachers have a data dashboard that helps them monitor student progress.

With math naturally prevalent throughout the game of basketball, interactive NBA Apply problems in Discovery Education’s Math Techbook leverage students’ interest in basketball to help teach a wide range of mathematical concepts around their favorite players and teams. The NBA Math Tool allows students to create their own formulas and visualize math concepts through histograms, scatter plots and box plots using NBA and WNBA statistical categories such as points, rebounds, steals, assists and blocks. For example, to teach students about variables, equations, and weighted averages, educators can challenge students to predict who will be chosen for the All-NBA Teams by creating formulas based on available statistics.  Other problems ask students to use proportions to predict how many assists a player is on track to have by the end of the season; create probability models to show how likely players are to make 2 point or 3 point shots; or calculate the timing of a slam-dunk takeoff.

"The launch event is going to jump-start our students' enthusiasm for math by making it relevant to their interests,” said John Hayden Johnson Middle School Principal Courtney Taylor. “I'm thrilled to see our students deeply engaged in their learning through the context of basketball with Discovery Education and the NBA!"

Discovery Education understands that teacher engagement is critical to implementing successful learning initiatives.  Therefore, all Techbooks include research-based professional development that supports educators as they integrate new digital content and resources into classroom instruction. The Discovery Education Community, a global community of education professionals, further connects teachers and administrators around the world with social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events that inspire innovation and facilitates idea sharing.

"We know that sports are a great way to excite and motivate young learners, especially in critical areas such as math and science," said Discovery Education President and CEO Bill Goodwyn. "We applaud the NBA and WNBA's leadership in bringing the real world into classrooms and empowering kids to solve problems by building their core STEM competencies."

–No Cost, Online Portal Offers Educators Engaging Standards-Aligned Resources that Foster Kindness and Compassion in the Classroom and Beyond–

“The world is a better place when we encourage kindness."

SILVER SPRING, Md. [November 14, 2016] Kindness starts with one. One person holds open a door. One person writes a thank you letter to a teacher. One person sparks kindness when another really needs it. Now, more than ever, it’s time to be kinder. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAK), an internationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to inspiring people to practice kindness and pass it on to others, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, have teamed up to announce today the launch of an all-new education initiative, “Discover Kindness in the Classroom.Available at no cost to classrooms nationwide, the program offers standards-aligned resources for grades K-8 that teach important social and emotional learning skills, and stimulate thoughtful conversations between educators and students about the importance of kindness in their daily lives.

Social and emotional skills are critical to being a good student, productive citizen and successful worker. Many risky behaviors such as drug use, violence and bullying can be prevented or reduced when social and emotional skills are taught. Moreover, social and emotional learning can improve academic scores. One study shows that students who have been in a directed SEL program can increase their scores on standardized tests by up to 11%. (American Psychological Association’s Monitor on Psychology).

Discover Kindness in the Classroom provides elementary and middle school educators and counselors cross-curricular lesson plans and hands-on activities that encourage students to spread kindness and share their experiences with others. The program features two specially curated Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 Kindness Collections that explore kindness concepts including respect, compassion, empathy, integrity, fairness, helpfulness, and gratitude. The second  Kindness Collection will launch in February 2017 coinciding with Random of Kindness Week taking place during February 12-18, 2017. Units in each Kindness Collection are designed to inspire and empower students to be kind and compassionate, act on what they have learned and share their positive actions and how they felt. Educators can also utilize the “How-To Guide” to create their own Kindness Collections by selecting and organizing resources that meet their students’ needs, in addition to the educator guides that accompany each Collection and provide best practices for easily integrating these resources in classroom instruction.

“Social and emotional learning skills are incredibly important to my students’ futures and impact so many aspects of their lives both inside and outside of our classroom,” said Kristen Davis, first grade teacher in Santa Rosa County, Florida. “I look forward to incorporating resources from Discover Kindness in the Classroom into my instruction to show my students how small acts of kindness can make a big difference and impact everyone around them.”

In addition to the Fall and Spring Kindness Collections, Discover Kindness in the Classroom also offers monthly Kindness Spotlights that are designed to quickly and easily highlight various Kindness Concepts. Each Kindness Spotlight offers two short elementary and middle school activities focused around specific Kindness Concepts of the month. For example, November’s Kindness Spotlight will explore gratitude and respect, and December will feature fairness and integrity.

“The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation curriculum has been quietly implemented in thousands of schools worldwide, but we believe teaming up with Discovery Education will inspire and empower thousands more teachers across the nation to see and feel the impact of teaching kindness in their own classrooms. We couldn’t be more excited about this partnership,” said Brooke Jones, Vice President of The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.

"Discovery Education shares The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation's belief that the world is a better place when we encourage kindness," said Lori McFarling, senior vice president of Discovery Education.  "We are proud to collaborate with them to present classrooms nationwide engaging digital resources that help teach important social and emotional learning skills and promote thoughtful conversations between educators and students about the importance of kindness in their daily lives."

NEBRASKA’S SCHUYLER COMMUNITY SCHOOLS EXPANDS PARTNERSHIP WITH DISCOVERY EDUCATION TO LAUNCH NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

Stephen Wakefield, Discovery Education

– New Professional Learning and Leadership Initiative Will Nurture Teacher-Leaders and Supports District’s “SchuyPad” Initiative –

Schuyler, Neb. (November 7, 2016) – Nebraska’s Schuyler Community Schools today announced an expansion of its three-year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. The latest phase of this collaboration focuses on professional development and will provide eight educators from Schuyler Central High School the opportunity to participate in Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps initiative. A comprehensive professional development system, Digital Leader Corps supports the growth of teacher-leaders as they serve as change agents powering the district's transition to dynamic digital learning environments.

This new effort supports Schuyler Community Schools’ “SchuyPad” initiative.  Launched in 2013, the program has given all district high school students access to a personal device and is designed to provide students 24/7 access to learning at school, after school, and at home; prepare students for college and the workforce; personalize learning; and help students build important skills such as creative thinking, problem-solving, communication and collaboration.

Schuyler Community Schools’ teachers and students currently use Discovery Education’s Science, Social Studies and Math Techbooks, a series of digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and include professional development.  The Social Studies Techbook series uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy and the analytical writing and problem solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, a multimedia reference library, interactive maps and informational texts.  Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the 5E model, the Science Techbook, through hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities, helps teach students to read, write, and think like scientists. Math Techbook, the latest addition to Discovery Education’s award-winning line of digital textbooks, transforms the way students and teachers experience math through engaging instructional strategies and real-world problems that motivate and excite students with diverse learning styles.

In addition, Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas, is also being used by educators to enhance teaching and learning across the district.

Building on the successful integration of these services into classroom instruction, Schuyler Central High School is now participating in Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corps.  Featuring a unique combination of professional learning, pedagogy and tools, Digital Leader Corps offers participating educators proven approaches to integrating educational technologies and digital media into classroom instruction.  These approaches are then practiced in educator created, student-centered Learning Labs. In these labs, teachers practice and adapt their new skills in a classroom setting before sharing their successes broadly with their colleagues. The Digital Leader Corps program provides teachers with continuous customized, job-embedded consultation, with on-going modeling, coaching and feedback from Discovery Education experts in the pre-planning, stakeholder communications and implementation phases.

“Schuyler Community Schools, in partnership with parents and the community, is committed to providing students the educational experiences they need to become skilled, knowledgeable, and responsible citizens in a global society. We look forward to continuing to partner with Discovery Education on that mission,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Dan Hoesing. “The Digital Leader Corps will help our educators build the challenging, authentic, digital learning environments they need to create these experiences.”

In addition, the Discovery Education Community will continue to support Schuyler Community Schools’ educators in their efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to support Schuyler Community Schools’ commitment to digital learning by building the capacity of their teachers to make a positive impact on student engagement and achievement,” said Jason Barnes, Vice President of Partnerships at Discovery Education.  “By combining sustained professional development with dynamic digital content, the Schuyler team is creating authentic digital learning spaces that will engage today’s learners and advance student achievement.”

Standards-aligned education program, “Econ Essentials,” makes economics relevant with digital learning modules; plus new three-part mini documentary series from Discovery’s Seeker brings concepts to life-

Silver Spring, Md. (November 2, 2016) – Now more than ever, it’s critical for students to understand the core concepts of risk management and the factors that drive the global economy. That’s why Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, has partnered with CME Group, the world's leading and most diverse derivatives marketplace, to offer high school classrooms nationwide a dynamic, standards-aligned education program that broadens students’ understanding of key economic principles.

Econ Essentials offers three, interactive learning modules that are aligned with the Council for Economic Education’s Voluntary Content Standards for Economics. They present the fundamentals of microeconomics using real-world scenarios, interactive components, embedded assessments, and accompanying Educator Guides. The interactive modules are:

  • Fueling the Future: Presents students with a hypothetical challenge of starting a shuttle business. Students learn about supply and demand, discover the forces that impact gas prices, and explore how these prices impact their everyday lives. Students apply their knowledge to set a ticket price for their business and see if they made a profit.
  • The Facts About Food: Allows students to take a journey from ‘farm to table’ in the role of an advisor to a farm, enabling them to learn how the supply chain and other global factors influence supply and demand. Students explore the role of economics in food prices and what influences the price we pay for our food.
  • Foundations of Finance : Introduces learners to the topics of interest rates and its relationship with financial health. Students will learn about personal financial growth in a real-world context, such as applying for student loans, buying a car, or saving.

Discovery Education and CME are also offering a compelling three-part mini documentary series by Seeker, from Discovery Digital Networks. Appropriate for students in grades 6-12, each episode brings economic topics to life – transporting students across the globe and showcasing stories of people overcoming challenges in the areas of agriculture, energy, and finance. These thought-provoking videos, offered alongside an engaging classroom activity, reinforce fundamental economic concepts in real-world contexts – agriculture and food, energy and fuel, and finance. The five-minute episodes are:

  • How Algae Could Change the Fossil Fuel Industry: In this video, students meet a CEO of a company developing new techniques to convert algae into energy. Students learn about the challenges associated with bringing new and innovative technologies to market and reaching a sufficient scale to make the solutions viable.
  • Why the U.S. Needs a New Generation of Farmers: Meet the owner of a farm who is fulfilling her dream of responsibly providing meat for members of her community. Students learn about the challenges associated with food production including the fact that so few young people are choosing to farm.
  • Owning A Restaurant Under the Cuban Embargo: Hear from a restaurant owner operating in Cuba, a country that has historically been a command economy. As market reforms have taken place and relations with the United States have improved, new opportunities have arisen for people to start businesses.

“Through the study of economics, students become equipped to make wise decisions in both their public and private lives and also grow important skills like critical thinking, problem solving, media and information literacy,” said Jackie Prester, Business and Technology Teacher, Mansfield Public Schools, Massachusetts. “I’m looking forward to using Econ Essentials to help my students learn fundamental economic principles in an engaging, digital environment.”

“Food, fuel and finance matter to our everyday lives, so it is critically important that students understand how these economic concepts work, impact their families and affect the world around them,” said Anita Liskey, CME Group Managing Director, Corporate Marketing & Communications.  “We are thrilled to partner with Discovery Education and all of the talented educators around the country who are using these modules to help students better understand and participate in our global economy.”

“From purchasing a car, to paying taxes, to making investment decisions, the principles of economics impact our daily lives. Econ Essentials helps students engage with these important topics and empowers them with the information they need to make smart decisions in their public and private lives,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President at Discovery Education. “Discovery Education applauds CME for their leadership in helping today’s students understand basic economic topics, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with CME’s team on our joint mission to support the success of all learners.”
