Students Win $15,000 and Their PSA, an Imaginative Music Video, Will Run on Select Discovery Networks

Silver Spring, MD (April 28, 2017) – Just got your driver’s license? Can’t wait to floor it? Wait — two Memphis-area teens have a grand-prize winning video message about how to “Stay Alive While You Drive.”  High school sophomores Emi Otsuki (age 15) and Summer Knowles (age 14) sung all the right safety notes with a PSA tune to warn their driving-age peers about the dangers of distracted driving. Today Toyota and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced that the Faith Heritage Christian Academy students in Millington, TN won the grand prize in the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge for their video “Stay Alive While You Drive.”  View their video here.

Now in its sixth year, the TeenDrive365 challenge invites teens across the country to create public service video announcements to inspire their friends and peers to drive without distraction. Emi and Summer’s video uses catchy song lyrics to describe distractions “as the enemy” faced by teens behind the wheel. “Turn down that radio / Keep focused mind / Tell your friends to quiet down / And suddenly you will Find / You’re a great driver, you drive safe,” part of the PSA goes.  The teens will receive $15,000 and will collaborate with a Discovery film crew to reshoot their video into a TV-ready PSA to air on a variety of Discovery networks.

“We were impressed by Emi and Summer’s lighthearted, yet clear message on distracted driving,” said Mike Goss, general manager, Social Innovation, Toyota Motor North America. “Their original song gets in your head and reminds you to drive safely.  We’re excited to help spread the ‘staying alive’ message to teens nationwide.”

“Emi's and Summer’s driver safety video has made us incredibly proud,” said Terry Wade, associate headmaster, Faith Heritage Christian Academy, Millington TN. “Their PSA is a message for our community, and for communities around the country, about how to stay safe: don’t text, put your seat belt on, focus on the road, and quiet down!”

Emi and Summer’s video was chosen by a panel of judges at Toyota and Discovery Education from nearly 1,500 submissions. The other winners include:

  • Second Place and People’s Choice: Gabe Hostetler, student at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minnesota will receive $10,000 for coming in second place.  Hostetler’s video was also voted the People’s Choice winner and will receive an additional $5,000, and a behind-the-scenes trip to a live taping of a Velocity network show for his video, “One Decision.”
  • Third Place: William Thomason, a student at Atlanta Public School’s North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, GA will receive $7,500 for “Building Safe Drivers.”

The additional six finalists will receive $2,500, and four regional winners will receive $1,000. Their videos can be viewed here.

“We applaud this year’s grand prize winners Emi and Summer for their memorable peer-to-peer PSA to engage teens in driver safety conversations,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president, Discovery Education.  “Discovery Education strongly believes in creating digital learning environments that support students as they navigate life behind the wheel and we are proud to partner with Toyota in this effort to amplify driver safety messages in school and across selected Discovery networks.”

The challenge is part of Toyota TeenDrive365 (www.TeenDrive365.com), a comprehensive initiative to help teens and parents become safer drivers together. Building on the programs Toyota has offered for more than a decade, it offers a collection of online tools, events, expert advice, and tips as well as social media elements.

Public Can Vote Online for People’s Choice Winner until April 18.

In Schools, Virtual Field Trip on the Engineering Behind Safety Takes Place April 20.

Silver Spring, MD (April 6, 2017) –  Teen filmmakers are pointing their lens at driver safety, and making a difference.  Today, Toyota and Discovery Education announced the ten finalists of the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge. Now in its sixth year, the Challenge invites teens to create short videos to inspire their peers to drive more safely and avoid risky behavior.  The public is invited to watch the ten finalists’ videos —chosen from nearly 1,500 submissions — at TeenDrive365InSchool.com/vote and vote through April 18, 2017 for the People’s Choice winner, who will receive a $5,000 prize and a behind-the-scenes trip to a taping of a Velocity network show.

The Challenge is part of the comprehensive TeenDrive365: In School initiative, which offers a range of tools for high school educators and teens, including an upcoming virtual field trip on “The Engineering behind Safety” on April 20.  Students can meet the Toyota engineers, scientists and technicians who envision the future of driver safety and then use science, technology and innovation to make it a reality.

“We are always ‘wowed’ by the unique perspective that the young filmmakers bring to the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge year-after-year, and they’ve done it once again,” said Mike Goss, General Manager, Toyota Social Innovation. “This year’s finalists impressed us with their ingenuity and it’s clear that they believe that driver safety is an important issue for their peers. We wholeheartedly agree with them and are excited to also offer the Virtual Field Trip to expand on these important safety messages.”

TeenDrive365 Video Challenge Prizes
In addition to the People’s Choice winner, several other prize winners will be chosen by a panel of judges representing Toyota and Discovery Education. The first place winner will receive $15,000 and will work with a Discovery film crew to transform their video into a TV-ready PSA to air on a variety of Discovery networks.

  • Third place prize – $7,500 scholarship
  • Fourth to tenth place prizes – Each receives $2,500 scholarship

The re-created PSA ran across Discovery’s family of networks and can be viewed at teendrive365inschool.com.

“Peer-to-peer messaging is a powerful tool to engage young people in driver safety conversations,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President, Discovery Education.  “With traditional drivers’ education programs leaving the classroom, it's never been more important to create digital learning environments that support students as they navigate life behind the wheel. We are proud to partner with Toyota in this effort to amplify, empower and celebrate driver safety messages in school.”

TeenDrive365: In School Virtual Field Trip
Complementing the challenge, educators will be able to take their students behind-the-scenes of Toyota Motor North America Research and Development HQ in Michigan on Tuesday, April 20 at 1pm ET/12PM CT, to learn about the engineering behind safety.  At this Toyota hub of design, research and development, get insight into how real world challenges that drivers face every day are being tackled with new design features to help enhance driver safety.

Students will get a behind the scenes look at:

  • The Electromagnetic Compatibility Chamber
  • Crash Test Dummy Lab
  • Crash Test Track
  • Toyota Safety Systems

In this 40-minute experience geared towards grades 9-12, students learn how the highly-skilled professionals in advanced manufacturing processes and systems identify problems, create solutions, think critically, and apply new technologies and skills.  They’ll see how advanced technology is used to help improve the quality and safety of automobiles today, and learn more about the physics principles that are involved in conducting crash tests. Register in advance here.

“The announcement of the TeenDrive365: In School initiative challenge finalists and the upcoming virtual field trip provided me a great reason to begin a discussion about driver safety with my students,” said Rob Lamb, Chemistry Teacher at Pattonville High School, Pattonville School District, Bel Nor, MO. “It’s wonderful to have classroom resources that can be a catalyst for a discussion as important as driver safety.”

Other TeenDrive365: In School resources that help teens prepare for the responsibility of driving, include quizzes, parental discussion points, and a financial calculator to help teens assess the costs of driving; classroom resources for educators, including standards-aligned lesson plans; and Heads UP!, an interactive simulation which allows teens to virtually experience real dangers of distracted driving.

– No-Cost Professional Development Events Designed Specifically for Principals and Vice-Principals to Strengthen Participants’ Educational Leadership and Practice-

Silver Spring, Md. (April 5, 2017) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, invites Principals and Vice-Principals across North America to participate in one of nine Regional Principal Summits being held in the United States and Canada this year. A series of free, full-day professional development events, Discovery Education’s Regional Principal Summits will introduce attendees to a host of new strategies for using technology to energize and refine their role as lead learners and will offer opportunities for Principals and Vice-Principals to explore ways to create dynamic digital learning environments in their schools.

The first two Regional Principal Summits will be held simultaneously on April 28th in Columbia, South Carolina and Arlington Heights, Illinois. Following a continental breakfast, each Summit will begin with opening remarks from the host and a motivational session to frame the day, which will be followed by breakout sessions presented by area school leaders. Discovery Education will provide lunch on-site, and during this time attendees can reflect on the morning sessions and network with their fellow Principals and Vice-Principals.

In the afternoon, attendees will hear about a host of regional topics from a featured local Principal and will learn about new resources for making the transition from using hardcopy textbooks as a core instructional resource to using dynamic digital content to engage students and transform teaching and learning.
