– 10 U.S. School Systems and 190,000+ Students Join as Early Computational Thinking Adopters, Receiving Professional Development, Educator Guides, Model Lesson Plans, CS Curriculum Connectors, and a Learning Leader for Year-round Support –

NEW YORK, NY | SILVER SPRING, MD (September 26, 2017) – Tata Consultancy Services, (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) a leading global IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital education content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced the launch of Ignite My Future in School. This, a first-of-its-kind, multi-million dollar initiative, leverages computational thinking and new teaching resources as a catalyst to transform the way K-12 students learn across America.

Recognizing the importance of computational thinking as a foundational skill, Ignite My Future in School has a goal of engaging 20,000 teachers and one million U.S. students by 2021. As a first step towards this goal, TCS and Discovery Education also announced that 10 U.S. school systems – with more than 6,700 teachers and 194,000 students – joined the effort as early adopters of this transdisciplinary approach.

These partner school systems are: Brooklyn, NY; Charlotte, N.C.; Dallas, TX; Denver, Colo.; Detroit, Mich., Dublin, Calif.; Harrisburg, Pa.; Janesville, Wis.; San Anselmo, Calif.; and Stone Mountain, Ga. They have joined the initiative in a five-year educator training and learning commitment to help empower middle school teachers. These select schools will experience the unique opportunity to learn and apply computational thinking through an annual free day of professional development for educators and community night for parents. In addition, TCS and Discovery Education have launched an online program, TECHademy, which will engage teachers nationwide in an exclusive, cost-free, virtual professional development experience that includes curriculum resources, eLearning courses, webinars, and more. These resources are aligned to national standards, as well as the recently launched K-12 Computer Science Framework.

“As an industry leader, Tata Consultancy Services has a fundamental responsibility to prepare the next generation of U.S. students with computational thinking and digital fluency that are critical to succeed in their future careers across all sectors,” said Surya Kant, President of TCS North America, U.K. and Europe. “Partnering with Discovery Education enables us to deliver maximum impact through a transdisciplinary approach to learning that starts with providing teachers the knowledge they need to empower their students through computational thinking skills that will set them up for success.”

“Advanced thinking and greater investment in our students is always to be commended,” said U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., a member of the Senate committee that oversees education. “Students and teachers across 10 school districts, including DeKalb County, Ga., will benefit from the opportunity Tata Consultancy Services and Discovery Education are providing as we find improved ways to help equip our students to be ‘big picture’ thinkers. This type of initiative will help to prepare them for many careers and elements of jobs that do not yet even exist. Now more than ever, our students need to learn the basic skills that will help them prepare for lifelong learning.”

Today, less than 25 percent of U.S. schools teach computer science related courses. However, in less than five years, there will be one million more jobs requiring computer science skills. The expansion of Ignite My Future in School will empower educators, administrators and school districts to champion a transdisciplinary approach to learning, as they introduce computer science to students within the context of core subjects, including: English, mathematics, social studies, science and the arts.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with TCS to help educators and students reimagine learning,” said Bill Goodwyn, president, and CEO, Discovery Education. “Through Ignite My Future in School, our shared goal is to help revolutionize innovative learning experiences by strengthening teacher effectiveness and increasing student interest in computational thinking.”

Unveiled during the launch of Ignite My Future in School, professional development, educator guides, model lesson plans, curriculum connector resources, and Learning Leaders for year-round support to partner school systems were introduced. Additionally, the initiative will provide:

TECHademy: Launched today LIVE from One Discovery Place in Silver Spring, Maryland, TECHademy will engage teachers across the nation in an exclusive virtual professional development experience. The immersive engagement will catalyze their learning journey and provide hands on experiences they can bring back to their classrooms.

Days of Discovery: Up to 150 educators and 250 community members will attend each Day of Discovery and Community Night. Additionally, each market will have local learning leaders, who will promote teacher learning communities, connect participants and act as guides for cross-district learning and sharing. Moreover, more than 3,000 TCS employees will be actively involved as mentors and support the building of local coalitions in each city. Educators will be provided with high quality professional development content that aligns with existing curricular requirements, enabling them to reach students in a compelling, hands-on manner.

Curriculum Resources: Inspiring educators across the U.S. through a virtual digital platform, IgniteMyFutureInSchool.org will feature an abundance of curriculum resources – engaging transdisciplinary lessons that tie-in exciting, real-world scenarios covering computational thinking strategies across core subject areas. Inspiring family activities provide the opportunity to have fun while providing powerful learning experiences in the process. Collaborative resources complement schools’ existing curriculum with computational thinking exercises and activities. Career vignettes connect students with real-world TCS professionals using computational thinking to solve complex problems and promote innovation.

eLearning Module: Giving teachers the knowledge they need to empower their students through computational thinking, will help to infuse computer science with everyday subject instruction. The Ignite My Future in School e-learning module, accessible by all teachers, will provide a guided online introduction to computational thinking courses that can be completed in one or multiple web-based sessions.

Webinar Series: Compelling webisodes will feature key topics on computational thinking brought to teachers by thought leaders in the education industry. Instructional courses and content will provide faculty with the opportunity to leverage new teaching strategies in their classrooms, the series is designed to promote increased student engagement and achievement.

Computational thinking is a problem-solving process. Much like critical thinking, computational thinking is a higher-level process whereby students can decipher problems and form innovative solutions. Students will move from consumers to creators, and Ignite My Future in School will prepare them for bright futures where they can use their computational thinking skills to harness the power of digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, and design the future.

Ignite My Future in School builds on TCS’ robust global community initiatives that have inspired more than two million young people in STEM education and careers. TCS is a founding partner for two national mentoring initiatives in the United States, US2020 and Million Women Mentors. TCS’ flagship student engagement program, TCS goIT, has engaged more than 12,000 middle and high school students across 54 cities in the United States and Canada with hands-on experiences in computer science, inspiring them towards tech careers in all sectors.

– Award-Winning Social Studies and Science Techbooks to be Integrated into Instruction Across all District Middle Schools-

Silver Spring, MD (September 25, 2017) – Colorado’s Harrison School District Two (HSD2) announced today the selection of Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, as their new partner in advancing the district’s Strategic Plan: 2016-2021. As part of this new collaboration, HSD2’s curriculum committee has selected Discovery Education Social Studies Techbook ™ and Science Techbook ™ for use in the district’s middle schools. Educators will begin incorporating these resources into classroom instruction beginning this fall.

In the past year, HSD2 has enhanced the district’s WiFi network and expanded its 1:1 digital learning initiative. To bring the dynamic digital learning environments created by the HSD2’s 1:1 initiative alive and to achieve Strategic Plan: 2016-2021’s vision to provide equitable education for every student through personalized learning, the school system is integrating compelling digital resources into classroom instruction districtwide. This effort kicks-off this fall when HSD2 middle school social studies and science teachers begin integrating Discovery Education’s award-winning digital textbooks to their modern digital classrooms.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and are updated regularly at no cost. The series encourages all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. The Techbook series saves teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Techbooks are platform neutral and can be used in one-to-one or one-to-many configurations and in any instructional environment.

The Social Studies Techbook series uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps, and more.

Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the 5E model, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook helps teach students to read, write, and think like scientists through hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities.  In addition, a host of new STEM/STEAM resources have recently been added to the Science Techbook that encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems.

“Harrison School District Two is committed to providing each student an educational experience that prepares them to be college-ready, career-minded, and contributing to the common good of the community,” said Harrison School District Two Superintendent Dr. Andre Spencer. “We believe our transition to digital classrooms will transform students’ perception of the world around them, and we are proud to partner with Discovery Education on this initiative.”

The Discovery Education Community will also support the HSD2’s educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“The team at Discovery Education is excited to work side-by-side with Dr. Andre Spencer and the entire HSD2 team on this important initiative,” said Discovery Education Manager of Educational Partnerships Scott Burns. “We look forward to supporting the district’s efforts to build modern digital learning environments that will help prepare students for success beyond the classroom.”

New Science Fair Central Website Supports Students Preparing for Science Fair Season and Provides Exciting Learning Activities to Ignite Student Curiosity Through Unique “Maker Corner Activities” –

Silver Spring, Md. (Friday, September 22, 2017) – The Home Depot and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced a joint effort to support student engagement in science and STEAM education. Together, the companies have relaunched Science Fair Central, a website designed to provide the 12 million K-12 students participating in science fairs and STEAM events nationwide materials that will ignite their curiosity and support the development of creative, innovative, and impactful projects.

Specifically, Science Fair Central supports students participating in Science Fairs and STEAM events by providing useful resources such as project starters, information on scientific processes and engineering presentations, as well as material checklists and information on managing projects. The website also contains resources that help prepare parents and science fair coordinators to assist students in their efforts. Parent-focused content includes useful advice on how best to help students, what a completed project should look like, and printable material lists. Additionally, there is content available to support science fair coordinators in making sure their local science fairs run smoothly and efficiently.

In addition to these resources, Discovery Education and The Home Depot will promote student interest in STEAM by offering several types of fun-filled activities that can be used in the classroom. The new Maker Corner activities include hands-on, standards-aligned STEAM lessons and material lists for educators to guide students in critical, creative thought and strategy. These initiatives are modules specifically focused on environmental awareness, design and sustainability, such as: “Beehive Basics,” “Upcycled Lamp,” and “Armadillo Architecture.”

To nurture student interest in science and STEAM outside the classroom, Science Fair Central also features details on The Home Depot’s in-store Kids Workshops.  Now in its 20th year, the Kids Workshops program provides children ages 5-12 the opportunity to build a design project with the help of their parents at their local Home Depot on the first Saturday of every month. More than 55 million kids have attended Kids Workshops since 1997, inspiring their ingenuity to build nearly 12 million wooden tool boxes, bird houses, fire trucks and boats. To reinforce the importance of STEAM-focused learning in everyday life, new extension activities to the Kids Workshops, in both English and Spanish, have been added to Science Fair Central.  With these extensions, parents and students can continue their exploration of science and STEAM at home.

Science Fair Central also features other resources designed to grow interest in science and STEAM.  These resources include HERBan Gardening module, in which family members work together to create a sustainable herb garden, and Big Fun, Small Space module, that encourages family members to work together to design and build three outdoor, interactive games.  Family activities will be added to Science Fair Central regularly.

“The Home Depot is proud to work with Discovery Education to build greater student engagement in science and STEAM education where ever learning is happening,” said Lisa Destefano, vice president of marketing, at The Home Depot. “In partnership with Discovery Education, we’ve created a host of exciting resources to serve our Kindergarten through 5th Grade students, as well as expand our program to middle school and high school students. We are proud to further our mission to help develop the next generation of Doer’s.”

“Increasingly, our world is being shaped by science and STEAM,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “Discovery Education applauds The Home Depot for their commitment to helping today’s students develop a greater understanding and appreciation of these topics, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate on our joint endeavor to support the success of K-12 students nationwide.”

— Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids! Launches New Pledge Contest for a Chance to Win $10,000 for Schools and $1,000 for a Charity of their Choice, PLUS New Resources for Educators and Families to Help Students Grades K-6 Become Financially Empowered Adults

Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday, September 20) – Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms and Jackson Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit with the mission to advance financial knowledge on a national scale, today unveiled an all-new suite of Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids! activities, and a back-to-school contest, designed to bring personal finance topics to life across all subject areas. This engaging and fun financial education program, designed to train the next generation of financially empowered adults, equips students’ grades K-6 with the knowledge, tools, and practice they need to make informed decisions to reach their goals and dreams.

“We are bringing Cha-Ching to schools across the country so it can be the spark that starts a conversation about money,” said Danielle Robinson, executive director, Jackson Charitable Foundation. “Whether it’s with parents, kids, teachers, students or people at any stage of their lives, one of the most important steps to financial wellness is planning, and planning begins with a conversation.”

Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids! empowers youth with critical 21st century skills by beginning high-quality financial literacy education in elementary school, where it can be fundamentally embedded in core learning experiences. Available at no cost to classrooms nationwide, the program includes educator resources, family activities, animated videos and more. Additionally, the Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids! contest invites elementary school teachers and families to take a pledge to teach kids how to “earn, save, spend and donate.” Contestants may enter for a chance to win $10,000 for their local school, plus a bonus of $1,000 for the charity of their school’s choice. The winning school will receive a fun financial literacy event at their school, and will enter the running to spend time with children’s educational media expert Dr. Alice Wilder, producer for Blues Clues and co-creator for Super WHY!, and the characters of Cha-Ching.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with Jackson Charitable Foundation to prepare the next generation of leaders to make informed money decisions,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “Cha-Ching promotes positive financial behavior, and empowers educators and families to teach young learners the building blocks of financial literacy.”

Launched in April 2017, this partnership amplifies engaging financial literacy content, and brings it to classrooms and families across the United States. Cha-Ching is a cartoon band that features six energetic characters, brought to life in music videos, that help children learn about fundamental money management concepts through the band members’ different approaches to money habits. The original videos were created by Dr. Wilder and feature storylines that spotlight the four key concepts of money: “earn, save, spend and donate.” These concepts emphasize the cycle of money and vital choices that are made every day, throughout life.

“Helping children learn money management concepts while engaging them in fun and memorable activities prepares them for a promising future,” said Jacqueline Prester, Business and Technology Teacher, Mansfield Public Schools, Massachusetts. “With Cha-Ching, Discovery Education and Jackson are putting students on a path to financial freedom in adulthood, where money smart habits can positively impact their families, communities and lives.”

Through their stories, students will experience firsthand how the STEM concepts they are learning in the classroom are applied in the workplace. The immersive experience will also provide an opportunity for them to explore a number of interesting and rewarding careers. “This is an exciting time in agriculture, especially for innovators like Syngenta, because we have new tools to develop better seeds and crop protection products, as well as digital solutions to help farmers be more productive, said Ian Jepson, Syngenta R&D Center leader in Research Triangle, North Carolina. “We encourage students to think about the wide range of challenging and rewarding careers in companies like ours to help develop and deliver what farmers need to feed the world.”

To help educators integrate this virtual event into classroom instruction, the FFA Organization, Syngenta and Discovery Education have made a number of pre-and post-virtual field trip teaching resources available for classroom use at agexplorer.com/virtual-field-trip.  In addition, educators and classrooms are invited to deepen their experience by joining the conversation and asking questions of participants LIVE on Twitter @NationalFFA@DiscoveryEd and using the hashtag #AgExplorerVFT.  Following this live event, a Virtual Field Trip Archive will be made available on-demand through Discovery Education’s website.

“What a great time to be engaged in agriculture,” said Ambra Tennery, Educational Development and Evaluation Team Leader, FFA. “We are excited to partner with Syngenta and Discovery Education to educate youth about the importance of agriculture careers and finding their futures in agriculture.”

In the next five years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that the industry of agriculture will have more than 60,000 job openings annually and an estimated 22,500 of those openings will not have highly skilled graduates to fill them. Launched last year, this resource offers teachers and students a deep database of career profiles that help students connect what they are learning in school to future careers. Among the career pathways highlighted at AgExplorer.com are: animal systems; biotechnology systems; environmental service systems; food products and processing systems; natural resources systems; plant systems; power, structural and technical systems; and agricultural education. In addition, AgExplorer.com includes more than 250 career descriptions, education requirements, average salary, links to a college and university database and more all designed to help students.

“Discovery Education is excited to collaborate with the National FFA Organization and Syngenta to share with students worldwide how the STEM concepts they are learning today can be applied to an exciting range of careers in modern agriculture,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “Together, we are providing teachers with valuable resources that help them connect what their students are learning in the classroom to potential careers beyond graduation, and we look forward to continuing this effort with our great partners.”

– Award-Winning Digital Textbooks and Content to Create Captivating Learning Experiences for K-8 Students District-wide-

Silver Spring, Md. (September 12, 2017) – Indiana’s South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC) today announced a new partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.  Through this new collaboration, SBCSC’s K-8 educators will advance the district’s transition towards captivating digital learning environments by integrating Discovery Education Streaming Plus and Science Techbook™ and into classroom instruction.

SBCSC’s new relationship with Discovery Education supports the district’s mission to provide all students the support needed to attain the knowledge and skills necessary for postsecondary success. By strategically combining Discovery Education’s award-winning digital content and professional development with a shift to 1:1 learning, SBCSC’s educators are now empowered to create digital learning environments that will fully engage students and help build the skills they need to successfully meet the challenges of work, life, and citizenship.

Beginning this fall, SBCSC’s K-8 educators will begin using Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas, to help build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information. Through Streaming Plus, students can access a variety of digital assets including images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, books on tape, articles, videos, and are empowered to become content creators with a suite of tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects.  Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes, as well as a collection of new STEM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.  While Streaming Plus was originally purchased to satisfy the district’s current health adoption, the breadth and depth of the service’s content and its powerful content creation tools will support all K-8 teachers in all subject matters.

SBCSC’s K-8 educators will also begin using Discovery Education’s Science Techbook to create more engaging science lessons at the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate (5E) model, each Science Techbook includes rich, standards-aligned content such as video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Additional student features include bilingual text-to-speech and leveled reading tools, and note-taking and highlighting capabilities.

The Science Techbooks series also includes valuable STEM resources as well. STEM Project Starters encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. In addition, the STEM In Action resources help students connect their work to STEM careers, which promotes a clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.”  Embedded formative assessment opportunities that help educators monitor student progress are embedded into each Techbook, and like all Discovery Education digital textbooks, the Science Techbooks work on any device and can be implemented in any instructional setting.

“The South Bend Community Schools are dedicated to being the region’s choice for exceptional education, with expert staff and exemplary programs that engage our diverse students in quality learning and equip each one, academically and personally, to thrive in and shape an ever changing world,” said Dr. Kenneth Spells, SBCSC Superintendent. “Our talented staff is passionate about this mission and our decision to move forward in our digital transition, and we are pleased to partner with the great team at Discovery Education on this endeavor.”

The Discovery Education Community will also support the SBCSC’s educators’ efforts to transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is honored to be part of South Bend Community School Corporation’s work to create modern digital learning environments,” said Kelly Hoce, Discovery Education’s Educational Partnerships Director. “We look forward to closely supporting Dr. Spells, Facilitator of Science Tracy Slattery, and the rest of the district’s talented team in our joint effort to prepare all students for success beyond graduation.”
