– Discovery Education’s Math Techbook and Professional Development to Accelerate  District’s Transition to Digital Teaching and Learning –

Silver Spring, Md. (March 27, 2018) –  Illinois’ School District U-46 (U-46) today announced it has selected Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to support the implementation of its new bilingual teaching and learning strategy. This new partnership with Illinois’ second-largest district accelerates the ongoing transition toward digital teaching and learning through a combination of Discovery Education’s Math Techbook and customized professional development services.

Nearly 30 percent of School District U-46’s students are English Learners, a demographic that paved the way for the creation of the District’s renowned Dual Language program. Dual Language is a form of bilingual education in which students are taught literacy and grade-level academic content in two languages. U-46 offers “one-way instruction” for students with a home language background of Spanish who qualify for the English Learner services program.  Students without a home background of Spanish or who are English dominant may enroll in “two-way instruction” to learn Spanish and develop bilingual skills along with English Learners.

Today, more than 10,000 students are developing bilingualism and biliteracy skills in U-46 classrooms. The District’s collaboration with Discovery Education will bring digital textbooks to the  Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry classrooms.  Delivered in both English and Spanish, Discovery Education’s digital content is uniquely positioned to meet the bilingual needs of  School District U-46’s student body and community.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are breakthrough digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and are updated regularly at no cost.  The series supports the academic success of all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. Techbooks save teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Currently, Discovery Education Techbooks are used by more than 5.6 million students in all U.S. states and several Canadian provinces.

School District U-46 students and teachers will use Discovery Education’s Math Techbook, a digital textbook that connects students to math through real-world problems, helping all learners develop long-lasting mastery of mathematical concepts. In 2017, Math Techbook was independently verified by EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy. The Math Techbook will be delivered to students through Chromebooks as part of the school district’s one-to-one strategy, creating dynamic digital learning environments that drive higher student engagement.

To ensure each District teacher is fully supported throughout the transition to digital teaching and learning, Discovery Education experts will provide educators robust professional development opportunities that will help them maximize their new hardware and digital content to improve students’ academic achievement.

In addition, the Discovery Education Community will also support U-46  educators in transforming student learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is honored to work alongside District U-46’s educators in their effort to create inclusive digital learning environments for all students,” said Emily Keith, Educational Partnerships Manager at Discovery Education. “We look forward to collaborating with teachers and administrators on our joint mission to prepare every student for future success.”

– Celebrating the International Day of Happiness, ‘Discover Your Happy’ Virtual Field Trip to Expose Students and Educators to the Science Behind Happiness –

Silver Spring, Md. (Thursday, March 15, 2018) – In celebration of the International Day of Happiness, LG Electronics USA has teamed up with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to launch Discover Your Happy – an exciting new program designed equip students nationwide with the skills for sustainable happiness. Studies assert that two out of three American teens are stressed and lack the tools needed to manage anxiety. On March 20, 2018, the International Day of Happiness, LG and Discovery Education will host a unique Discover Your Happy Virtual Field Trip at 1:00 p.m. ET to address this critical issue.

“Discovery Education is excited to partner with LG to help teach students that happiness is more than just a positive mood, it is an emotion and state of being that can be achieved through the practice of fostering mindfulness and contentment,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “Research has shown that happy children do better in school and ‘Discover Your Happy’ invites them to explore immersive experiences that equip them with the skills necessary to lead healthy, successful and impactful lives.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents age 12-17 in the United States. Research from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America shows that one in four children are affected by anxiety disorders; these youth are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss out on important social experiences and engage in substance abuse. Happy people are healthier, live longer, earn more money, and do better in school and life.

Discovery Education’s Discover Your Happy program, designed to teach students that happiness is a learnable skill, is an extension of LG’s Life’s Good: Experience Happiness corporate social responsibility initiative. Discover Your Happy highlights six skills that sustain one’s ability to recognize that life’s good: mindfulness, human connection, positive outlook, purpose, generosity and gratitude. The goal is to create awareness that happiness is more than a fleeting feeling, that sustainable happiness is achievable, and that there are a set of skills that can be taught, learned and practiced to help anyone in their journey toward happiness.

The International Day of Happiness is a global celebration to recognize happiness as a fundamental human goal that lays the foundation for the well-being of people worldwide. The Discover Your Happy Virtual Field Trip, premiering on March 20, will enlighten students and educators across the country as experts from The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, Inner Explorer and Project Happiness demonstrate how happiness impacts our physiology and psychology.

Accessible standards-aligned materials found on the Discover Your Happy website will help students identify actionable ways to start their journey toward sustainable happiness. The immersive experience will also inspire and encourage them to bring happiness to their communities.

“Many of us are focused on happiness as a momentary feeling, but our goal is to spread the message that sustainable happiness is what matters – though it takes effort to achieve,” said Emiliana R. Simon-Thomas, Ph.D., science director at the Greater Good Science Center. “LG’s dedication to this important mission will help empower our youth to unlock their potential by learning the fundamental, science-backed skills of sustainable happiness.”

Research shows that happy kids do better in school. Happy learners remember information better and happiness positively impacts grades. LG’s Life’s Good: Experience Happiness initiative, Discover Your Happy introduces skills and practices aimed at achieving sustainable happiness. These classroom tools are aligned with curriculum standards and are designed to provide engaging, hands-on activities for students to identify actionable ways to start their journey toward sustainable happiness and bring happiness to their communities through six sustainable happiness skills.

LG Experience Happiness | Discover Your Happy program elements include:

Classroom Activities — Providing standards-aligned, grades 9-12 classroom resources, curriculum will incorporate the six sustainable happiness skills and will frame curriculum around the science behind happiness.

Family Activities — Offering parents, families and communities helpful tools to teach their children to experience happiness.

“Helping my students identify actionable ways to thrive, by teaching them the science behind happiness, provides them with prosocial advantages at home, at school and in their communities,” said Brandon Wislocki, fifth grade teacher, Irvine (Calif.) Unified School District. “Providing them with an awareness that happiness is more than a fleeting feeling, that sustainable happiness is achievable, and that there are a set of skills that can be taught, learned, and practiced to help them in their journey toward happiness, centers their concentration and helps them to alleviate stress.”

These resources are available at LearnExperienceHappiness.com and will become available through Discovery Education Streaming. Why Embracing New Ways of Teaching is a Worthwhile Risk

This column was submitted by Branchburg Township School Districts’ (NJ) Superintendent of Schools Rebecca Gensel.

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” – Michelangelo

Michelangelo’s quote is one that’s been applied to many other fields. So it should come as no surprise that his wisdom also applies to how good educators can bring out the best in their students.

To decompress at home after a long day, I throw clay on a pottery wheel. I’m no Michelangelo, but one of the things this hobby has taught me is that forcing something into what I want it to be usually doesn’t work out. I’ll throw a ball of clay on the wheel, setting out to make a mug. But as the wheel spins, and I influence the clay by putting pressure on it or moving it around the wheel, often I discover the clay has a mind of its own for what it wants to become. I’ve learned that if I incorporate that tendency of the clay, rather than beat it back into what I had intended it to be, the result is much more successful.

Over the years, I’ve learned that relinquishing control often yields a more beautiful piece of art than what would have existed if I insisted on exerting my will over the clay.

One of the recent challenges my district’s teachers have been faced with is making the leap to a new relationship with students – one augmented by technology. Instead of a top-down, authoritative approach to classroom instruction, many teachers have embraced the notion that by democratizing access to information, they don’t always need to be the expert on every topic.

Rebecca Gensel, superintendent of Branchburg Township School District

More of our teachers are looking to their students to help them become better educators. Without a doubt, our students know more about what’s out there than we do. Giving them the opportunity to share what they know by flipping the teacher/student relationship certainly has its advantages.
Though technology has been a cornerstone of our district for decades, our use of technology has been transformational over the past four years. Classroom devices have moved from discreet computer labs to an everyday presence throughout school buildings. We’ve equipped our K-8 students with classroom devices ranging from laptops to tablets. We’re not just teaching keyboarding in our tech labs anymore. We’re using those labs now to teach coding, showing students how to master technology by understanding what makes the computer do the things that it does and what happens when you manipulate those programs in new ways.

These devices have given students opportunities to learn and share their learning with their peers and a broader audience. Students’ responsibilities have evolved from rote memorization and single-audience term papers to exploring abstract concepts in group settings.

Services like Discovery Education Streaming and Techbook are woven into the canvas of resources our students can explore and through which they can share, expressing what they’ve learned in their own unique way.

Technologies like these give our students opportunities to choose how they learn, rather than limiting all students to only one avenue for expression.

We’re fostering learning environments where we can say to our students, “Here’s the topic-now go explore. Open your laptops, see what you can learn, share it, and we’ll connect the pieces together.” At this stage in their education, it’s not necessarily about defining a career as much as it is about helping students understand the possibilities that exist for learning.

This is a lot to take in for many educators. It requires taking a risk-giving students permission to fail while trusting that they’ll learn from their mistakes. It requires being a mentor and a guide, not a dictator or a drill sergeant.

Through Discovery Education’s professional development sessions, our educators’ eyes were opened to the possibilities of what can be achieved by integrating technology into the curriculum. We’re collectively beginning to shift our own understandings for what our students can be.

Rather than forcing our students, like a ball of clay on my pottery wheel, to learn in the ways we think are best, there is much to be gained by following their lead as we all move forward in our learning.

-A Combination of Discovery Education’s New STEM Connect Digital Service and Sustained Professional Development is Set to Drive District’s Efforts to Grow Student Interest in STEM Education-

Silver Spring, Md. (March 14, 2018) – Missouri’s Mehlville School District (MSD) today announced an expansion of its partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. Through this latest phase of MSD’s multi-year collaboration with Discovery Education, the district will create dynamic digital STEM teaching and learning environments across the school system through a unique combination of digital content and job-embedded professional development.

The MSD community seeks to build a system of learning that supports a culture of continuous improvement and helps every child engage in their future. In 2013, to support all 10,600 MSD students as they strive to reach their fullest potential and become life-long learners, Discovery Education Streaming Plus was introduced into all classrooms across the school system. Since the integration of the award-winning digital service into instruction, interest in STEM has grown among district students, and especially, among young girls. To continue building student interest and engagement in STEM education, the district is expanding its partnership with Discovery Education and will provide all middle school classrooms access to Discovery Education’s latest digital service, STEM Connect.

Discovery Education’s STEM Connect enhances core curriculum and brings STEM to life in classrooms.  A cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource built on a 4Cs STEM skills framework, STEM Connect helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation. Featuring flexible, modular learning units, STEM Connect provides students an easy-to-follow educational experience that includes real-world challenges, career connections, and hands-on activities.

Discovery Education’s Professional Development Services will continue supporting MSD’s effort to accelerate STEM education. Through MSD’s STEM Innovator Program, which is powered by Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corp capacity building model, district administrators and teachers are learning new strategies and best practices for building and sustaining a culture of STEM in their schools and guide them as they master new STEM instructional approaches. With a focus on developing high-quality STEM instruction, creating interdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEM education across all middle schools, this initiative is providing the robust professional development, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership support necessary to create centers of STEM excellence. MSD’s STEM Innovator Program, which will shortly complete the second year of its four year term, also helps district educators integrate STEM Connect into instruction in all middle school classrooms.

MSD’s successful STEM Innovator Program’s will soon expand into the school system’s high schools.  Additional details about this expansion will be released during a special STEM community event scheduled to occur in April of this year.

“The introduction of Discovery Education’s Streaming service into classroom instruction has helped improve student engagement and has accelerated student interest in STEM,” said Mehlville School District Assistant Superintendent Dr. Tina Plummer. “It’s the natural next step for us to capitalize on our students’ interest in STEM by introducing this powerful new resource into our middle-school classrooms.  Discovery Education’s STEM Connect, combined with the ongoing powerful professional development opportunities for educators, will be critical to preparing our students for future success.”

The Discovery Education Community will continue supporting the MSD educators’ efforts to create more personalized learning experiences for students through dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is pleased to continue working with the incredibly talented Mehlville team, and is excited to support the district’s STEM strategy,” said Kelly Hoce, Director of Education Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We look forward to accompanying the district’s educators and administrators on their journey to reinvent STEM education across the school system.”
