–Alignment of Spotlight on Strategies to Learning Model Helps Educators Identify and Implement New Tactics Supporting the Success of All Learners–

Silver Spring, Md. (May 29, 2018)Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced it has aligned its popular Spotlight on Strategies content to McREL International’s six-phase model for learning.  The alignment of this popular series of digital professional learning resources to McREL’s model helps educators quickly chose the appropriate classroom tactics for aiding the acquisition and recall of information. McREL International is a non-profit, non-partisan education research and development organization that since 1966 has turned knowledge about what works in education into practical, effective guidance and training for teachers and education leaders across the U.S. and around the world.

Available in all Discovery Education Techbooks and Streaming services, the Spotlight on Strategies or SOS series offers creative, research-based instructional videos and supporting materials developed for teachers, by teachers. An example of an SOS can be found in a short video about the A-E-I-O-U strategy, through which students interpret information from images or videos they have viewed, write down their thoughts next to five descriptive categories, then pair-share their favorite parts.  This strategy provides scaffolding that helps students look for and remember key ideas about the information presented in the video segment and provides a conversation structure for debriefing with classmates and reporting out.

Another SOS example is the Table Top Texting strategy, which engages students in content by encouraging them to reflect and respond to videos or images they are presented by creating a written dialogue with their neighbor in the form of a “text thread.”  In this way, students connect to digital content in a way they communicate on a daily basis as they are encouraged to think and respond on a higher level.

McREL’s six-phase model was recently outlined in a McREL whitepaper entitled Student Learning that Works, and consists of:

1. Become interested in learning,

2. Committing to learning,

3. Engaging in learning,

4. Making sense of learning,

5. Practicing new learning, and

6. Applying learning and finding meaning.

Thanks to Discovery Education’s alignment of the over 130 SOS videos and their accompanying support materials to these six phases, educators can now quickly and easily find SOS strategies that support students’ needs no matter where they are on McREL’s model for learning.

“The SOS videos are one of the most useful professional learning resources available to teachers today,” said Susan Bowdoin, a Library Media Specialist in New Mexico’s Albuquerque Public Schools.  “The alignment of the SOS resources to McREL’s six-phase learning model is an incredibly valuable timesaver, as it allows me quickly cross-reference what phase of learning students are in and then choose a strategy that will help them progress to the next level.”

The SOS initiative grew out of the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members in school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Just as McREL is dedicated to helping educators flourish by turning research into solutions, Discovery Education seeks to empower educators worldwide with the content and professional learning they need to accelerate student achievement,” said Jannita Demian, Senior Director, Learning Communities and Instructional Content. “By aligning McREL’s research on learning to Discovery Education’s content, we’ve created an innovative tool educators can use to support the success of all their students.”

— Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge Selects Winner from 1,300 Submissions in Nationwide PSA Competition —

Silver Spring, Md. (Tuesday, May 22, 2018) To educate their peers on the dangers of distracted driving, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools high school seniors Kirklin “Mack” Hopkins (17) and Kellen Stadler (18) send a clear message: A single second can have life-long consequences. Their poignant video, titled “It’s Not Fine,” is the winner of the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge, a national driver safety public service announcement competition, using the tools of storytelling to get through to young drivers.

More than 1,300 videos were submitted to the competition by students to help inspire safe driving habits and spark a national conversation about staying safe behind the wheel.

“It’s Not Fine delivers a direct and powerful narrative that highlights the dangers of distracted driving and the ability of teens to encourage safe driving behavior,” said Mike Goss, Toyota Social Innovation.

The video opens with Sarah riding in the vehicle as her older sister Ellie texts and drives. Sarah says, “Mom said not to.” Ellie says, “It’s fine. I do it all the time. It’s only for a second.” The video cuts to years later, with Sarah now old enough to drive and behind the wheel. Believing “it’s fine” to text and drive, Sarah follows her sister’s example, with devastating consequences.

“The driver-safety video by Mack and Kellen is professional, resolute and a great example of how teens can influence their peers and others,” said Dr. Tracey Harrill, principal at Providence High School. “We are very proud of their work to communicate that ‘it’s not fine’ to text and drive.”

Toyota’s TeenDrive365 is a comprehensive program to provide educators, parents and teens with critical safe driving materials. The video challenge, now in its seventh year, has received thousands of inspirational submissions that have celebrated teen’s creativity, while elevating the critical goal of protecting teens on the road.

“We are very proud of the powerful video storytelling by Mack and Kellen,” said Dr. Clayton Wilcox, superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. “It drives home the dangers of texting and driving in a dramatic, effective way. As a national PSA, it could save lives by showing what happens when you text and drive.”

The students were awarded $15,000 and the opportunity to transform their video into a TV-ready PSA. View the video here.

“All of us in CMS are very proud that our students’ work has been nationally recognized,” said Joey Burch, principal at Levine High School. “By showing the tragic consequences of texting and driving, the video impresses the need for safety on everyone.”

Other winners include:

  • Second Place: Porter Christensen, student at Pine View High School in Saint George, Utah will receive $10,000 for developing Stupid Stats.
  • Third Place: Jake Wieners, an Agawam High School student from Agawam, Massachusetts will receive $7,500 for Don’t Blind Yourself.
  • People’s Choice Winner: Michael Sivvianakis, an Old Rochester Regional High School student from Mattapoisett, Massachusetts was voted the People’s Choice winner. Sivvianakis will receive $7,500 – for the People’s Choice and top 10 finalist awards – and a behind-the-scenes trip to a Velocity network taping for Magic Won’t Help You.

The additional six finalists will receive $2,500, and four regional winners from the Northeast, Midwest, South and West regions will receive $1,000. National and Regional Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge finalists can be viewed here.

“TeenDrive365 strikes a chord with teens as role models. Peer-to-peer influence is a powerful tool to engage teens in driver safety conversations,” said Kristin Hirst, vice president of corporate education partnerships, Discovery Education. “We applaud this year’s grand prize winners Mack and Kellen for their use of immersive storytelling, creativity and authenticity to positively influence others and ultimately help save lives.”

– Unique Digital Content Combined with Sustained Professional Development to Help Create Vibrant Culture of STEM in Participating Schools –

Silver Spring, Md. (May 16, 2018) – Texas’ Richardson Independent School District (RISD) today announced it has selected Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to support the district’s new, three year “Future Ready: STEM for All” initiative. In the latest phase of Discovery Education’s approximately 10-year collaboration with the school system, district educators will integrate Discovery Education’s dynamic digital services into classroom instruction across RISD’s 18-school Berkner Feeder Pattern.  The introduction of digital resources, coupled with sustained, job-embedded professional development also provided by Discovery Education, will help create a vibrant culture of STEM teaching and learning in participating schools.

Through the “Future Ready: STEM for All” initiative, RISD seeks to transform the Berkner Feeder Pattern’s culture and pedagogy.  This initiative features a renewed emphasis on Project-Based Learning (PBL) within instruction which will ensure academic rigor, student engagement, and relevancy across the curriculum.  In addition, the added focus on PBL will inspire the creation of STEM-centric cross disciplinary units that will be embedded within the district’s curriculum. RISD’s “Future Ready: STEM for All” initiative is supported by the Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) initiative.  A statewide public-private initiative, T-STEM is designed to provide Texas students with the knowledge needed to succeed in higher education and the workforce.

RISD educators across the Berkner Feeder Pattern will use Discovery Education’s award-winning Science Techbook, Math Techbook, and Social Studies Techbook, as well as the Discovery Education Streaming Plus and STEM Connect services as core instructional resources supporting the “Future Ready: STEM for All” initiative.

Discovery Education’s Techbooks are award-winning digital textbooks aligned to rigorous standards, supportive of a comprehensive curriculum, and updated regularly at no cost. Utilizing an inquiry-based format built on the 5E model, Discovery Education’s Science Techbook helps teach students to read, write, and think like scientists through hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, and data analysis activities. Discovery Education’s Math Techbook is a digital textbook that connects students to math through real-world problems, helping all learners develop long-lasting mastery of mathematical concepts. In 2017, Math Techbook was independently verified by EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy.

The Social Studies Techbook series uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps, and more.

Discovery Education Streaming Plus is a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas that helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information across all subject areas. Students can access a variety of digital assets including images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, books on tape, articles, videos, and more, they are empowered to become content creators with a suite of content creation tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects. Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes, as well as a collection of new STEM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

Discovery Education’s STEM Connect enhances core curriculum and brings STEM to life in classrooms.  A cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource built on a 4Cs STEM skills framework, STEM Connect helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation. Featuring flexible, modular learning units, STEM Connect provides students an easy-to-follow educational experience that includes real-world challenges, career connections, and hands-on activities.

“The teachers and administrators of Richardson Independent School District share a commitment to ensuring all of our students connect, learn, grow and succeed.” said RISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Tabitha Branum. “Our deepening partnership with Discovery Education brings dynamic digital resources to the schools participating in the “Future Ready: STEM for All” initiative, which will help them create the rigorous curriculum and innovative learning opportunities that helps build a strong culture of STEM instruction.”

To accelerate integration of dynamic digital resources into classroom instruction, educators from across RISD’s Berkner Feeder Pattern will also participate in a professional development initiative from Discovery Education called STEMFormation.  A three-year system for professional learning designed to build and sustain a culture of STEM teaching and learning, STEMFormation helps create a shared STEM vision, develops educators and administrators, cultivates inquiry-based, transdisciplinary instruction, and prepares our future workforce.

“Discovery Education is proud to aid RISD’s efforts to maximize student engagement and strengthen project-based learning” said Phillip Mikula, Director of Educational Partnerships at Discovery Education. “Together, we are creating immersive STEM learning experiences that ignite students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math while nurturing the important skills today’s children need for success beyond graduation.”

The Discovery Education Community will continue assisting RISD’s educators’ efforts to create more personalized learning experiences. This global community of education professionals connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

-Discovery Education’s Math Techbook and Professional Learning Services to Strengthen Efforts to Create Dynamic Digital Classrooms –

Silver Spring, Md. (May 9, 2018) – Oklahoma’s Edmond Public Schools (EPS) today announced it has chosen Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to support the implementation of the district’s Digital Conversion Strategy.  This new six-year partnership, which provides a unique combination of customized professional learning services and the award-winning Math Techbook to teachers and students in grades 6-12, will help change the way teachers teach and students learn through the use of technology across the district.

In the Fall of 2017, Edmond Public Schools began implementing their new Digital Conversion Strategy district-wide.  Through this effort, students are building collaborative learning skills that prepare them for college and careers. Classroom engagement has been increasing as deeper and more enriching content makes learning more relevant and exciting.  In addition, opportunities for expanded learning beyond the school day and outside the school building are growing, which is allowing students to spend more of their time learning.

The incorporation of Discovery Education’s Math Techbook into EPS secondary instruction will help accelerate these developments by connecting students to math through real-world problems worth solving in dynamic digital settings.

Discovery Education’s Techbook series, which was chosen for use in EPS following a competitive process, is a breakthrough collection of digital textbooks that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and include numerous professional development opportunities.  The series supports the academic success of all learners through interactive features that change the reading level of text and enable text to be read aloud. Techbooks save teachers’ time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and assessments at their fingertips. Currently, Discovery Education Techbooks are used by more than 5.6 million students in all U.S. states and several Canadian provinces.

EPS students in grades 6-12 will soon have access to Discovery Education’s Math Techbook, a digital textbook that connects students to math through real-world problems, helping all learners develop long-lasting mastery of mathematical concepts. In 2017, Math Techbook was independently verified by EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy. The Math Techbook will be delivered to students through Chromebooks as part of the school district’s one-to-one strategy, creating dynamic digital learning environments that drive higher student engagement.

“We are excited to partner with Discovery Education and use Math Techbook as our 6th grade through Algebra 2 math curriculum,” said Edmond Public Schools’ Secondary Math Content Specialist Becky Archibald. “Math Techbook’s instructional resources and pedagogical approach align with Edmond Public School’s Instructional Pillars, which are Inquiry, Choice, Create, Reflect, Collaborate.  The Math Techbook’s research-based and innovative math curriculum will support our teachers as they strive to advance excellence and empower all students to succeed in a changing society.”

To ensure EPS teachers are optimizing their new Math Techbooks, Discovery Education’s professional learning team will support district educators throughout the transition to digital teaching and learning. Through the robust professional learning opportunities offered by these experts, EPS secondary educators will learn how to maximize their new hardware and digital content to improve student academic achievement.

Finally, the Discovery Education Community will also support EPS in transforming student learning experiences with digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is looking forward to working with Edmond Public Schools as they implement their Digital Conversion Strategy,” said Discovery Education’s Director of Education Partnerships Phillip Mikula.  “The district has created a tremendous roadmap to building dynamic digital learning environments, and we are excited to be a part of their journey.”

Silver Spring, Md. (Friday, May 4, 2018) – EA SPORTS, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, are teaming up to host A Numbers Game Virtual Field Trip: The Role of Data in EA SPORTS Madden NFL on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 from 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. ET. Featuring special guest Pittsburgh Steelers Wide Receiver Antonio Brown, the immersive experience will transport students nationwide to EA Tiburon Development Studio in Orlando, Fla., where a group of Osceola County students will join the virtual exchange to ask Antonio and EA SPORTS employees questions about how data is used to activate players in the game. Together, educators and students will go behind-the-scenes at EA SPORTS to learn how data dominates video game development. Student’s will also learn how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) power today’s popular Madden NFL series. Register here.

“We’ve always considered Madden NFL to be a powerful teaching tool for the sport of football and we’re marrying the art of the video game to the science behind our young fans’ favorite sport,” said Daryl Holt, VP and Head of Operations for EA Tiburon. “This Virtual Field Trip teaches students both the fundamentals of football as a sport and the math that fuels it.”

Available at no cost, Discovery Education and Antonio Brown will introduce students to EA SPORTS engineers, animators, designers, analysts, and producers to discuss career paths and the various applications of STEM used to bring Madden NFL to life. Classrooms across the country will learn how data collected from the NFL Combine’s rookie event –from the 40-yard dash to the vertical jump – are used as inputs to create Madden NFL player rankings. Students will also learn how EA SPORTS gathers thousands of data points on players to create the most realistic in-game experience.

“The NFLPA is about connecting businesses with sports and the players themselves,” said Ahmad Nassar, President of NFL Players Inc. “This successful partnership is a perfect example of thinking outside the box to connect education with NFL players. Students learn directly from players, not only through the ‘Madden NFL: Football By the Numbers’ platform, but through interactions with players who bring the concepts to life.”

The Virtual Field Trip is part of EA SPORTS, NFLPA and Discovery Education’s EA SPORTS Madden NFL: Football By the Numbers program – a comprehensive educational initiative that taps into children’s excitement about football and video games to ignite their passion for STEM. The program offers a first-of-its-kind digital interactive that teaches math and science concepts to students in grades 5-9 – such as angles, force, probability and velocity – using famous Madden NFL highlights. In addition, the program has expanded to include STEM career challenges and elementary lessons, including lesson plans and career challenges.

“We salute EA SPORTS and NFLPA’s commitment to engaging today’s students in the importance of math and science by leveraging the magic of sports to inspire learning,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “As an immersive, standards-aligned education program designed to harness students’ love for football, ‘Football By the Numbers’ engages young learners in key math and science concepts, bringing the real world to the classroom to make theoretical concepts, relevant to their worlds. We’re proud of our collaborative work to empower young learners with the skills they need to succeed.”

These resources are available online at FootballbytheNumbers.DiscoveryEducation.com and are available through Discovery Education Streaming. Participants may submit questions before the Virtual Field Trip or join the experience LIVE on Twitter @DiscoveryEd. The Twitter chat will also feature Antonio Brown @AB84, @EAMaddenNFL and @NFLPA using the hashtag #ANumbersGameVFT.

“Students flourish when provided with opportunities to see careers that exist beyond their classrooms. It’s helpful for them to gain a clear understanding of how STEM factors into ranging career pathways,” said Brandon Wislocki, Elementary Teacher, Beacon Park School, Irvine Unified School District. “The Role of Data Virtual Field Trip engages students in scenario-based learning and draws clear connections between computational analysis and video game development – overall the digitally immersive experience makes learning exciting and fun.”
