Florida’s Franklin County School District and Discovery Education Team Up on New Effort to Engage Students in STEM Education

– Discovery Education’s Award-Winning Digital Resources and Innovative Professional Learning System to Support the Creation of a Culture of STEM Teaching and Learning Districtwide –

Silver Spring, Md. (August 28, 2018) – Florida’s Franklin County School District (FCSD) announced today that it is teaming up with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, on a new initiative supporting STEM education across the district.  Utilizing Discovery Education’s award-winning digital resources and innovative professional learning systems, this new partnership will empower district educators to create a culture of STEM teaching and learning in the district’s K-12 school and K-8 charter school.

Located in the heart of Florida’s Panhandle and serving the county’s approximately 4,250 households, the Franklin County School District seeks to create an educational atmosphere in the school system that inspires students to reach their fullest potential. Specifically, FCSD seeks to deepen students’ engagement in STEM education and nurture learners’ communication, critical thinking, creative, and collaboration skills by creating inquiry-based STEM classroom environments.

Among the resources, the school system will use to create stimulating STEM learning environments is Discovery Education Streaming Plus.  A comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas, Discovery Education Streaming Plus helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information. Students can access a variety of digital assets such as images, primary source documents, podcasts, articles, and videos, then are empowered to become content creators with a suite of content creation tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects. Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes, as well as a collection of STEM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

FCSD educators across the school district will also soon begin using Discovery Education’s STEM Connect to enhance core curriculum and bring STEM to life in classrooms.  A cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource built on a 4Cs STEM skills framework, STEM Connect helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation. Featuring flexible, modular learning units, STEM Connect provides students an easy-to-follow educational experience that includes real-world challenges, career connections, and hands-on activities.

To help FCSD’s educators shift their instruction and utilize these new tools, the district will launch the STEM Leader Corps capacity building model.  Administrators and teachers from FSCD’s K-12 school and K-8 charter school will participate in STEM Leader Corps’ professional learning opportunities, which support the adoption of new strategies and best practices for building and sustaining a culture of STEM in their schools and guide them as they master new STEM instructional approaches.  With a focus on developing high-quality STEM instruction, creating interdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEM education district-wide, this initiative provides the robust professional development, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership support necessary to create centers of STEM excellence.

“The teachers and administrators of the Franklin County School District are deeply committed to helping all our students develop the knowledge and skills they need to be successful no matter where their lives take them,” said Franklin County Schools Superintendent Traci Moses. “Discovery Education’s professional learning opportunities and digital content can help us meet that goal, and we are excited to team up with their experts to jointly build the culture of STEM teaching and learning that will prepare our students to succeed in the real world.”

FCSD educators will be supported by the Discovery Education Community as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education looks forward to supporting the great community of teachers and administrators at the Franklin County Schools as they embark on this initiative,” said Dan Gammage, Partnership Manager at Discovery Education. “We are 100 percent aligned on our belief that a strong culture of STEM prepares students for successful lives beyond school, and are excited to begin this effort.”

Middle School Educators Across Southeast Michigan Adopt ‘Computational Thinking Curriculum to Prepare Students For 21st Century Careers’

Through “Ignite My Future in School” Tata Consultancy Services and Discovery Education Deliver Job Readiness to Students and World-Class Professional Development for Educators at Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan

BELLEVILLE, MI | NEW YORK, NY, August 21, 2018 – Tata Consultancy Services, (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) a leading global IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital education content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, have announced the Michigan launch of their Ignite My Future in School (IMFIS) initiative.

The program will provide a select group of middle school educators from Southeast Michigan – including hosts Van Buren Public Schools and Saline Area Schools, as well as Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, Taylor School District, Evart Public Schools, Riverview Schools, Wayne-Westland School District, and Crestwood School District – with the opportunity to participate in Ignite My Future in School’s Day of Discovery at Belleville High School. During this day of professional development training, local educators will connect with TCS and Discovery Education’s curriculum experts to learn about the program, understand its purpose and develop innovative strategies for integrating these new resources into classroom instruction. Yesterday, Discovery Education and the Van Buren Public Schools launched a new partnership that will support the school system’s effort to build dynamic digital learning environments.

Much like critical thinking, computational thinking equips learners with essential skills for solving complex problems to find innovative solutions through skills such as collecting and analyzing data, modeling solutions, or applying algorithmic thinking. Ignite My Future in School combines the best of digital content, lesson plans, career vignettes, and professional learning to help teachers prepare their students for careers of the future. The initiative offers educators instructional resources and year-round curriculum support to ensure that computational thinking is embedded into core subjects such as math, sciences, arts, and social studies.  This interdisciplinary approach helps students to obtain the necessary skills required for 21st century careers across all industries.

In [this video message], Michigan Senator Gary Peters congratulated TCS and Discovery on their IMFIS program stating, “Jobs of tomorrow will require an increasing level of digital skills. Technology plays a crucial role in our modern economy, a role that will only continue to grow in the coming years. Today, nearly 50 percent of jobs require digital skills, and by the end of the decade there will there will be more than one million new technology related jobs and we will not have enough highly skilled graduates to fill them. As Michigan leads the way in technological advances like self-driving cars, Artificial Intelligence, and even missions in space exploration, this incredible program will ensure that you can help prepare your students to play a central role.”

Yet, Michigan colleges only produced 1,793 computer science (CS) graduates in 2015, and this past school year, just 71 high schools in the state offered AP computer science courses. Ignite My Future in School hopes to bridge the gap by developing relevant skills for future job opportunities in the new digital economy, including Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and the Internet of Things (IoT).

“I would like to congratulate Tata Consultancy Services and Discovery Education on their collaborative efforts to create the ‘Ignite My Future in School’ initiative,” said Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell. “The resources and programs that this initiative offers to the teachers and students will provide new learning opportunities to prepare our students for an ever-changing world.”

“Creating pathways for students to gain relevant job readiness skills is essential to their future success and the future of the nation,” said Balaji Ganapathy, Head of Workforce Effectiveness, TCS. “I applaud the various school districts in Southeast Michigan for being forward-thinking and committed to integrating computer science into core subjects. We are excited to work with each school system as they continue to give young people opportunities to succeed through education that is contextually aligned with the needs of growing industries in Michigan.”

On a national level, Ignite My Future in School has a goal of engaging 20,000 teachers and one million U.S. students by 2021. As a first step towards this objective, TCS and Discovery Education have partnered with U.S. school districts in the Washington, D.C. area, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan and Wisconsin as early adopters and launch sites of this transdisciplinary approach. Since launching in 2017, IMFIS has provided training materials valued at more than $2 million and engaged over 185,000 students and 3,300 educators in all 50 states. Michigan’s Van Buren Public Schools Select Discovery Education to Support Districtwide Movement to 1:1 Learning

– Unparalleled Blend of Discovery Education’s Digital Resources and Professional Learning Services to Power School System’s Movement to More Personalized Learning Environments –

Silver Spring, Md. (August 20, 2018) – Michigan’s Van Buren Public Schools (VBPS) today announced it has finalized a new partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.  This new collaboration will power the district’s movement to 1:1 learning by providing the dynamic digital content and sustained professional development educators need to make students’ devices come alive as powerful learning tools.

VBPS’ mission, as articulated in the district’s 2017-2022 Strategic Plan, is “To provide a high-quality, dynamic education that empowers every student to reach their full potential.” To achieve this goal, the district has identified five major strategic focus areas:  Student Achievement, Technology, Facilities/Operations, Learning Environment, and Communications.  VBPS’ new partnership with Discovery Education supports the school systems’ efforts to accelerate student achievement, utilize innovative technologies to support teaching and learning, and create dynamic, digital learning environments that mirror students’ experiences with technology outside the classroom.

The Discovery Education resources powering VBPS’s 1:1 initiative include the award-winning Math Techbook, which will be used by teachers and students in grades 5-8.  A digital textbook that connects students to math through real-world problems, the Math Techbook helps all learners develop long-lasting mastery of mathematical concepts. In 2017, Math Techbook was independently verified by EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy. The Math Techbook will be delivered to students through Chromebooks as part of the school district’s one-to-one strategy, creating dynamic digital learning environments that drive higher student engagement.

To support the integration of the new devices and digital content in grades 7-12, educators teaching those grades will participate in Discovery Education’s Digital Leader Corp professional learning model.  Featuring a unique combination of professional learning, pedagogy, and tools, Digital Leader Corps offers participating educators proven approaches to integrating educational technologies and digital media into classroom instruction.  These approaches are then practiced in educator created, student-centered Learning Labs. In these labs, teachers practice and adapt their new skills in a classroom setting before sharing their successes broadly with their colleagues. The Digital Leader Corps program provides teachers continuous customized, job-embedded consultation, with on-going modeling, coaching, and feedback from Discovery Education experts in the pre-planning, stakeholder communications, and implementation phases.

“The Van Buren Public Schools’ shift to a 1:1 learning environment that puts a device in the hands of each student represents a tremendous investment,” said Peter Kudlak, Van Buren Public Schools Superintendent. “To fully realize the return on this investment, we need to power those devices with the highest quality content and make sure our educators are prepared to evolve their instruction.  Discovery Education is the right partner for those two important jobs, and we look forward to working with them on this initiative.”

Throughout this partnership, VBPS’s educators will be supported by the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“The entire team at Discovery Education is excited to support the Van Buren Public Schools as they make the shift to dynamic digital learning environments,” said Discovery Education Partnership Manager Alissa McLean, M.Ed. “Superintendent Kudlak and his gifted team of administrators and teachers have created great plan to make this transition, and we look forward to supporting them in this effort.”

Louisiana’s East Baton Rouge Parish Schools Launches New STEM Initiative in Partnership with Discovery Education

– Unique Combination of Digital Content and Sustained Professional Learning to Support Educators’ Efforts to Build Dynamic STEM Learning Environments –

Silver Spring, Md. (August 14, 2018) – Louisiana’s East Baton Rouge Parish Schools (EBR) today launched a new STEM initiative in partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms.  In this new collaboration, Discovery Education will support EBR’s educators with award-winning digital content and sustained professional learning that will help them develop a culture of STEM teaching and learning that fosters project-based learning opportunities for students at Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School and Park Elementary School.

The second largest school system in the state of Louisiana, EBR’s 3,757 educators serve a diverse population of over 42,000 students and are committed to making the district an innovative and globally-competitive educational choice for all families.  As part of this effort, district educators have for years integrated Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas provided by Louisiana Public Broadcasting, into classroom instruction.

EBR’s new STEM initiative is the school system’s latest effort to provide all students a comprehensive and rigorous academic curriculum that builds workforce and college preparedness and cultivates an appreciation for knowledge. By leveraging cutting-edge digital services and participating in sustained, job-embedded professional learning opportunities, district educators will create a culture of STEM education that features authentic digital learning environments and offers relevant project-based learning opportunities that meet the newly adopted Louisiana Science Standards and connects students to future careers.

This school year, educators in the two schools participating in this initiative will begin integrating Discovery Education’s STEM Connect into classroom activities. A cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource built on a 4Cs STEM skills framework, STEM Connect helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation. “We are excited to be supported by Discovery Education as we work toward our goal of creating inclusive, dynamic STEM teaching and learning environments for our students,” said East Baton Rouge Parish Schools’ Superintendent Warren Drake. “The East Baton Rouge Parish Schools seek to ensure all our students are motivated to become high achievers prepared for the demands of the 21st Century workforce, and we believe this new collaboration will help us make this possible.”
