Discovery Educator Network Announces 2018-2019 Leadership Council Members

–Educators Around the World Leading the Growth and Development of Discovery Education’s Professional Learning Network–

Silver Spring, Md. (October 31, 2018)– The Discovery Educator Networktoday announced the members of the professional learning network’s 2018-2019 Leadership Council (LC). The Discovery Education Network is supported by Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content for K-12 classrooms.  A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Educator Network connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable professional learning, idea sharing, networking, and inspiration.

The members of the Leadership Council are active contributors to the growth and development of the Discovery Educator Network. They serve and lead by hosting events, contributing to social media and the Discovery Education blog, creating instructional resources, and providing feedback on Discovery Education’s services. The expertise, enthusiasm, and passion of the Leadership Council, and the members they serve, drive the Discovery Educator Network.

“Serving on the 2018-2019 Discovery Educator Network Leadership Council is a tremendous honor,” said Damian Lozano, a high school teacher in California’s San Bernardino City Unified School Districtand a new member of that state’s Leadership Council.  “Each day, the idea and inspiration generated by this vibrant, innovative, professional learning network helps teachers and administrators across the country improve the educational experiences of thousands of students.  I am proud to be a part of the Discovery Educator Network Leadership Council, and look forward to helping plan a new series of professional learning events and initiatives that will help propel the continued development of my peers.”

Selected for their leadership abilities and commitment to improving teaching and learning worldwide, members of the Discovery Educator Network’s 2018-2019 Leadership Council will help facilitate the professional growth of their fellow teachers and encourage the sharing of best practice both locally and globally.  The term of service for each Leadership Council member is one year.

Mississippi’s Columbia School District Selects Discovery Education to Support Innovative Before- and After-School Programs for All Students

– School System to Use Discovery Education Streaming Plus to Create Digital Learning Environments in Extracurricular Settings–

Silver Spring, MD (October 24, 2018)– Mississippi’s Columbia School District(CSD) announced today it has selectedDiscovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, as its partner in creating digital learning environments in its before and after school programs. By integrating Discovery Education’s award-winning digital content into its innovative X-STREAMextracurricular program, the Columbia School District is creating one-of-a-kind digital learning experiences that increase participating students’ love of learning.

CSD is committed to ensuring that all students reach their potential to become responsible, productive citizens through a quality K-12 education. To reach this goal, the district utilized Federal funds to create the X-STREAM program, which helps students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, particularly in reading, science, and math.  Focusing on X-ing out learning gaps by providing eXplicit instruction and eXperiences in STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math), X-STREAM offers participants a broad array of enrichment activities that complement the students’ regular academic programs.

The X-STREAM before school programs “XL Period” operate five days per week for 45 minutes per day immediately before the regular school day.  The X-STREAM after school programs “Power Hour” operate three days per week for two hours per day immediately following the regular school day.  During the program hours, students have time to explore hands-on activities, complete individual assignments, or work collaboratively in small groups while acquiring 21stcentury skills. Beginning later this fall, X-STREAMwill be supported by Discovery Education’s Streaming Plusdigital content service.

Discovery Education Streaming Plus is an award-winning comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas. The streaming service helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information. Students can access a variety of digital assets including images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, articles, videos, interactives, and more, and are empowered to become content creators with a suite of content creation tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects. Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, interactive learning courses, and content collections organized around themes, as well as a collection of new STEM/STEAM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

Students Invited to Take a Peek into the Future of Mobility

— Toyota and Discovery Education Hosts Virtual Field Trip on Cars of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Automated Vehicles —

— Immersive Educational Experience to Explore STEM Concepts set for Oct. 30 —

Plano, Texas and Silver Spring, Md. (Tuesday, October 23, 2018) – Rather than take a bus on a field trip, this October, Toyota and Discovery Education will bring the latest in automotive technology to students in their classrooms.

Toyota Research Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan is opening its doors to middle and high school students nationwide through a free Virtual Field Trip. The live event, Cars of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Automated Vehicles, will explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts through an in-class activity. Students will see how TRI is using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics to develop smarter automated vehicles. To assist teachers, an educator guide for the Virtual Field Trip is available for download.

“Toyota is working on cutting-edge AI research, and we are excited to show students how we are applying that to vehicle automation and robotics to ignite their passion in STEM,” said Ryan Eustice, senior vice president of Automated Driving, Toyota Research Institute.

Students will also get an insiders’ tour of the University of Michigan’s Mcity, the one of a kind urban test facility where industry, government and academia come together to improve transportation, safety, sustainability and accessibility for the benefit of society.

The Ann Arbor Public Schools in Ann Arbor, Michigan are one of hundreds of school districts across the U.S. expected to participate in the Virtual Field Trip.

“Students will be able to see how the curriculum and hands-on skills we practice daily are implemented into the technological world around them; specifically, in the real world work at Toyota,” explains Tom Pachera, Ann Arbor Public Schools STEAM Coordinator.

The Virtual Field Trip is the part of Toyota’s TeenDrive365 initiative, which offers a range of content, tools and resources designed specifically for educators, teens and parents. Available at no cost to classrooms nationwide, these resources include: standards-aligned lesson plans for grades 9-12; activities that teach appropriate behaviors for young drivers and passengers.

“The TeenDrive365 ‘Cars of the Future’ Virtual Field Trip will unlock the potential of innovation in classrooms across the country and help students explore the progression of vehicles from present through far in the future,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education.
