Nebraska’s Bellevue Public Schools Launches New Partnership with Discovery Education to Create Dynamic STEM Learning Environments in Elementary School Classrooms Districtwide

– Discovery Education’s Unique Combination of High-Quality Content and Professional Learning Helps Prepare Diverse Student Body for Future Success-

Silver Spring, MD (November 29, 2018)– Nebraska’s Bellevue Public Schools(BPS) announced today a new partnership withDiscovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, focused on creating STEM learning opportunities across all 15 of the district’s elementary schools. Through this new collaboration, BPS’s educators will receive award-winning digital content and sustained professional development from Discovery Education that will help them create dynamic digital learning environments that engage students in STEM and prepare them to succeed in the world of tomorrow.

Situated next to Offutt Air Force Base, BPS’s mission is to provide its approximately 10,000 students, 25% of whom are connected to the military in some way, the skills needed for personal success and responsible citizenship in a global society.  Among the ways BPS is preparing all students for success beyond graduation is by creating immersive STEM and project-based learning environments that help students build the critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creative skills that will be in high demand by future employers. To drive Students & Teachers Energizing Minds, the district’s initiative creating these exciting new learning environments, BPS sought Discovery Education’s outstanding digital content and professional learning services.

One of the resources BPS will use to create digital STEM learning opportunities, improve math and science achievement, and build teachers’ capacity to accelerate the district’s efforts to prepare all students for success beyond the classroom is Discovery Education Streaming Plus.  Streaming Plus is a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas that helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information. Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes.  Students can access images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, books on tape, articles, and videos, as well as a collection of new STEM/STEAM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

Discovery Education’s STEM Connect will also serve as a key component of the district’s new effort to build an engaging STEM curriculum.  A cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource built on a 4Cs STEM skills framework, STEM Connect helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation. Featuring flexible, modular learning units, STEM Connect provides students an easy-to-follow educational experience that includes real-world challenges, career connections, and hands-on activities.

To help BPS’s educators integrate their new digital resources into instruction and build a culture of STEM teaching and learning across the school system, district educators will also participate in a sustained, scalable, three-year professional learning initiative from Discovery Education called STEM Leader Corps. BPS educators participating in STEM Leader Corps will learn new strategies and best practices for building and sustaining a culture of STEM in their schools and will be supported as they master new STEM instructional approaches.  With a focus on developing high-quality STEM instruction, creating interdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEM education in K-6, this initiative provides the robust professional learning, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership support necessary to create a STEM educational environment.

BPS’s use of Discovery Education Streaming Plus and STEM Connect and their educators’ participation in STEM Leader Corps will be funded, in part, by a grant from the Department of Defense Educational Activities. The 54-month grant provides resources for schools connected to military bases. Around 70 districts connected to a military base across the country applied for the grant, and 30 grants were awarded.

“The teachers and administrators of Bellevue Public Schools are devoted to helping all our students develop the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in the future,” said BPS Assistant Superintendent Robert Moore. “The digital content and professional development we will receive from Discovery Education will help us meet this goal, and we are excited to team up with their experts and jointly build the culture of STEM teaching and learning we know will prepare our students to succeed beyond graduation.”

BPS educators will also be supported by the Discovery Education Community as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

“Discovery Education looks forward to supporting the great community of teachers and administrators at BPS as they embark on this initiative,” said Nellie Herchenbach, Partnerships Manager at Discovery Education.  “We are completely aligned with the district’s belief that STEM education provides students exciting opportunities for hands-on experiences, interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving, and increased ownership of their learning.  We look forward to working with Superintendent Rippe, Assistant Superintendent Moore, and the entire BPS team on this exciting effort.”

TCS and Discovery Education Bring Computational Thinking to 5,100 Educators and 300,000 Students in 2017-2018 School Year

  • Tata Consultancy Services and Discovery Education Pioneer Transdisciplinary Teaching Approach through Ignite My Future in School
  • Program has Reached Educators in 55 U.S. School Districts in First Year; Digital Content for Educators used in all 50 States and D.C.

NEW YORK, NY | SILVER SPRING, MD, November 27, 2018 – Tata Consultancy Services, (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) a leading global IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital education content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, have far surpassed joint goals for the first year of Ignite My Future in School (IMFIS). During the 2017-2018 school year, IMFIS reached 5,100 teachers and 300,000 students, gaining strong momentum against a five-year vision to engage 20,000 teachers and one million students.

IMFIS empowers educators using a first-of-its-kind approach to integrate computational thinking and problem solving into core subjects such as math, science or the arts. Launched in the Fall of 2017, this pioneering transdisciplinary approach has provided educators in 55 school districts with free in-person professional development on computational thinking, aligned to standards and built on the K-12 Computer Science Framework. Early adopter school districts include the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New York, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan and California.

We envisioned Ignite My Future in School as a revolutionary spark that empowers educators and transforms how we prepare younger generations for future careers,” said Surya Kant, President, TCS North America, UK and Europe. “I am extremely proud to see the program’s impact on educators, students and districts across America in its first school year. As students become computational thinkers, they can harness the power of today’s digital technologies to create tomorrow’s path breaking innovations.”

Teachers who received professional development instruct a variety of subjects, including English language, arts, social studies, science, mathematics, physical education, and theater. Almost 99 percent of educators who participated felt ready to incorporate an element of computational thinking in their classroom, while 45 educators have stepped up to become Learning Leaders for their district and community, deepening the engagement and impact of the program. IMFIS has also engaged parents, guardians and other stakeholders through Community Nights, where they experienced the power of the lesson plans through hands-on exercises like Decoding DNA, Recycle and Reuse! and Drop the Beat.

Over the last year, TCS’ extraordinary commitment to helping teachers integrate computational thinking into classroom instruction has been one of the drivers of this initiative’s tremendous success, and we are grateful for the visionary leadership TCS has provided in this space,” said Bill Goodwyn, President and CEO, Discovery Education. Heading into its second year, ‘Ignite My Future in School’ has great momentum nationwide and Discovery Education is excited to continue supporting this important effort to transform the learning experiences of students nationwide.”

Educators from all 50 U.S. states and D.C have made use of the open source, standards-aligned resources on the IMFIS digital platform. This includes 40 lessons plans, four curriculum connectors, educator guides, three career vignettes, and K-12 computational thinking resources. To date, participating educators have obtained more than 575 micro-certifications through completion of the self-paced, e-learning modules for the eight computational thinking strategies.

The top five states where the IMFIS lesson plans have been used are California, New York, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, and the top three lesson plans used are Build A Movement, Outbreak and Celebrate Together.

The early success of IMFIS represents a paradigm shift in democratizing access to computational thinking for students early on in their learning journey. Our district partnerships help to customize program implementations based on community needs, enabling educators to impart 21st century skills in an equitable manner. Finally, our transdisciplinary approach is inclusive, empowering educators to integrate computational thinking across any subject, any district, and any standards,” said Balaji Ganapathy, Head of Workforce Effectiveness, TCS.

TCS is a long-time supporter of national efforts like CSForAll and regional ones like Computer Science for All NYC Students (CSNYC) that have helped to drive much needed momentum for computer science by creating policies, standards, certifications, teacher training, and teacher recruitment. IMFIS supplements these efforts by expanding opportunities for students, educators and districts to learn and teach foundational computational thinking techniques, such as collecting and analyzing data, finding patterns, deconstructing problems, abstraction, building models, and developing algorithms.

In August 2018, IMFIS also launched the TCS Ignite Innovation Student Challenge, inspiring students to use these techniques to pressing problems encountered in their communities. Winners of the challenge will earn scholarships totaling $20,000, virtual mentorships with TCS employees and the opportunity to work with TCS to bring their idea to life.

In its second school year, IMFIS is poised to launch in more districts within the U.S., as well as make a foray into other countries. Educators will receive more resources to help envision how the lesson plans can be brought to life within a classroom setting. Learning Leaders will share their experiences with educators and help more school districts adopt the pioneering transdisciplinary approach. The program will continue to incorporate various teaching innovations, as well as develop computational thinking as a discipline alongside institutions of higher education. Furthermore, TCS is engaging lawmakers to recognize computational thinking as part of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which governs the U.S. K-12 public education policy.

California the Latest State to Adopt Discovery Education’s Award-Winning Science Techbook for K-8 Classroom Use Statewide

– Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for California NGSS Designed to Meet the Unique Needs of the State’s K-8 Educators –

Silver Spring, Md. (November 26, 2018) –Upon the recommendation of its Instructional Quality Commission, the California State Board of Education recently adopted Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for California NGSS for use in K-8 classrooms statewide through its state adoption process. Discovery Education’s Techbooks are currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across all 50 states and Canada.

The California State Board of Education’s approval of the Discovery Education Science Techbook for California NGSS clears the way for school systems across the state to purchase and integrate these resources into classroom instruction. Discovery Education’s Techbooks support a comprehensive curriculum, can be integrated in any teaching environment, including one-to-one, one-to-many configurations, and when used in combination with print materials and hands-on kits, can create unique blended learning experiences. In addition, the Techbook series saves California teachers time with a comprehensive design that places model lessons, student activities and performance-based assessments at their fingertips.

Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for California NGSS includes a comprehensive collection of digital assets, ancillary print materials, and hands-on kits that empower educators to transform K-8 science instruction. Built from the ground up for educators in the Golden State, the Science Techbook for California NGSS is available in both Spanish and English, includes model lessons and embedded CAST-aligned assessments, and features a vast array of interactive models, high-quality multimodal content, and accompanying hands-on labs and activities. In addition, Science Techbook resources approved by the California State Board of Education for grades 6-8 were custom built to the Preferred Integrated Learning Progression Course arrangement of standards developed by the California Science Expert Panel.

The Science Techbook for California NGSS’s rich, digital resources offer educators numerous opportunities to use anchor and investigative phenomena to activate student-driven investigations that fuel students’ natural curiosity and promote deeper learning. In addition, through model lessons and embedded Teacher Notes, the Science Techbook helps teachers ensure all three dimensions of learning are addressed and supports students as they utilize scientific practices, identify crosscutting connections and demonstrate an understanding of science through the application of critical thinking and disciplinary literacy skills.

The Science Techbook series also includes valuable STEM resources certified by the Global STEM Alliance. STEM Project Starters encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. Teens Invited to Enter Third Annual Operation Prevention Video Challenge as Part of National Opioid Education Initiative

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Discovery Education Give Youth a Voice in Combatting the Misuse of Prescription Medication with Call-for-Entries Announcement —

Silver Spring, Md. (Tuesday, November 20, 2018) – The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the DEA Educational Foundation, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, announced today the launch of the third annual Operation Prevention Video Challenge – a peer-to-peer platform for communicating messages about the dangers of opioid misuse.

An extension of Discovery Education and the DEA’s Operation Prevention program, the video challenge encourages teens to create a 30-60 second original public service announcement that alerts other students about the dangers of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use. Overall, the challenge aims to inspire teens to research the opioid epidemic, identify its widespread impact on the country and the substances’ harmful effects on the body, and start a social movement that encourages authentic dialogue about this critical issue. The top 10 finalist videos will be uploaded to operationprevention.com for a public vote to determine the People’s Choice winner. Winning PSAs will be featured on-air, across Discovery Education and DEA digital platforms, and on other social media platforms.

Prizes for winning submissions, include:
1st place: $10,000;
2nd place: $5,000;
3rd place: $1,000; and
People’s Choice: A VIP trip to Quantico, Virginia, for a tour of DEA training.

“Stopping drug abuse before it starts isn’t just the responsibility of education and prevention programs – it takes all of us, including the next generation of leaders, to make people and communities whole again,” said Sean Fearns, chief of community outreach, DEA. “Peer-to-peer education is uniquely impactful for teens, so we’re excited to continue promoting this video challenge to inspire new advocates for drug-free living.”

Last year’s winning PSA, titled Waiting to Die by Porter Christensen of Saint George, UT, was one of the hundreds of original submissions the challenge received. To view entries from finalists and winners of the previous Operation Prevention Video Challenges, visit operationprevention.com/competition/video/archives/2018.

“The ‘Operation Prevention Video Challenge’ sparks peer-to-peer conversations, in classrooms, in homes and in neighborhoods nationwide, about the importance of kick-starting life-saving conversations to prevent heroin use and opioid misuse,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “We are proud to support the DEA in their work to create a social movement that encourages anew era of empowered and educated young people using their voice to stem the tide of the epidemic.”

According to National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), more than 115 people in the United States die from opioid misuse every day. The Operation Prevention Video Challenge is launched at a time when prescription opioid misuse and heroin use have reached epidemic levels in the United States. Operation Prevention is a nationwide program that educates students about the science behind addiction, and its effects on the brain and body. Standards-aligned Operation Prevention interactive resources, available at no-cost, help promote lifesaving discussions in the home and classroom.

“Opioid addiction and substance abuse touches everyone and too often goes unrecognized as families, educators and communities are left to deal with the consequences on their own,” said Rodney Crouse, Guilford County Schools Educator from Trinity, N.C. “The ‘Operation Prevention’ Video Challenge presents a unique opportunity for my colleagues and I to acknowledge the epidemic’s impacts, while encouraging our students to part of the solution.”

The Operation Prevention Video Challenge opens today and will close on March 6, 2019. Public voting for the People’s Choice winner will take place April 11-25, 2019. United States high school students, ages 13 and older, can register and find more information about the challenge here.

Operation Prevention resources are free, accessible and available at operationprevention.com. Operation Prevention resources are also available through Discovery Education Streaming.
