3M AND DISCOVERY EDUCATION ANNOUNCE NATIONAL FINALISTS AND STATE MERIT WINNERS IN 2019 3M YOUNG SCIENTIST CHALLENGE

– Top Ten Finalists Compete for $25,000 Grand Prize and Title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” –

Silver Spring, Md. and St. Paul, Minn. (Tuesday, June 25, 2019) 3M and Discovery Education today announced 10 finalists from across America as part of its annual 2019 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). The nation’s premier middle school science competition recognizes scientific thinking, communication and curiosity in students grades 5-8 who demonstrate a passion for solving everyday problems that could ultimately improve lives around the world.

After submitting a short video communicating the science behind a possible innovation to solve an everyday problem, these young scientists rose to the top of the competition and were selected over hundreds of others, because of their science acumen, innovative thinking and exceptional communication skills demonstrated.

“The ‘3M Young Scientist Challenge’ supports young innovators who have demonstrated a passion for science, the perseverance to see their creative discoveries unfold, and a desire to improve the world around us,” said Denise Rutherford, senior vice president, corporate affairs, 3M. “We are excited to recognize this new generation of scientists as part of 3M’s ongoing commitment to STEM-equity and science advocacy for all students. We are really energized to play a part in shaping the next generation of change makers who will lead and mold our future.”

The top 10 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists – five boys and five girls, ranging in ages from 9-14 – include those from public and private schools across the nation. Each finalist will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a 3M Scientist during a mentorship program, where they will be challenged to bring their innovative concept to life. Students will meet virtually with their mentors, who will provide guidance to help them move their innovation from concept to prototype – allowing for a complete experience in the scientific process.

All 10 finalists will receive $1,000 and a trip to 3M’s Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn., where they will participate in the final competition on October 28 and 29. They will be evaluated on a series of challenges, including a presentation of their completed innovation. Each challenge will be scored independently by a panel of judges. The grand prize winner will receive $25,000, a unique destination trip and the title of America’s Top Young Scientist.

Texas’ Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Expands Partnership with Discovery Education to Accelerate Growth of the District’s Culture of STEM Teaching and Learning

-Discovery Education’s Digital STEM Curriculum Resources and Professional Learning Set to Help Educators at Four More District Schools Create Dynamic STEM Learning Experiences-

Silver Spring, MD (June 17, 2019) — Texas’ Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District (HCISD) today announced the expansion of its multi-year partnership with Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.  In this collaboration’s latest phase, Discovery Education will support four more HCISD schools as they launch a new effort to accelerate the growth of the school system’s culture of STEM teaching and learning.

HCISD is located in one of the nation’s fastest growing regions–South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley–and is dedicated to preparing its students for success in the area’s rapidly expanding economy and beyond.  Last year, in support of HCISD’s strategic plan, Transforming Learning for Global Achievement, Discovery Education began providing educators in the district’s STEM2 Preparatory Academy dynamic digital content and sustained professional learning they are now using to create engaging, STEM-focused digital learning environments.  In this new stage of partnership, Discovery Education will support educators at two more HCISD elementary schools and two HCISD middle schools as they create immersive STEM learning experiences that will heighten students’ college and career readiness.

“Discovery Education’s dynamic digital resources and sustained, job-embedded professional development were initially chosen by HCISD to support our strategic plan’s key goals,” said Harlingen Consolidated Schools’ Chief Academic Officer Alicia Noyola.  “Together with Discovery Education, educators at the STEM2 Preparatory Academy are having great success as they use these resources to deliver high-quality instruction that results in maximum student achievement.  Expanding this powerful partnership will help us replicate this success in even more schools.”

Two HCISD elementary schools—Travis Elementary School and Rodriguez Elementary School—will shortly begin integrating Discovery Education STEM Connect into classroom instruction. STEM Connect is a cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource that helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation, and was recently awarded the prestigious CODiE award by the Software and Information Industry Association. Featuring flexible, modular learning units, STEM Connect provides students an easy-to-follow educational experience that includes real-world challenges, career connections, and hands-on activities.  In addition, the educators at these two schools will also participate in Discovery Education’s STEMformation initiative.

A comprehensive, three-year system of professional development, STEMformation helps educators strengthen and sustain a culture of STEM at individual school sites and guides educators as they master STEM instructional strategies.  With a focus on developing high-quality STEM lessons, creating transdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEM education school-wide, STEMformation provides the robust professional development, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership to create a center of STEM excellence.

In addition, educators from two HCISD middle schools—Vela Middle School and Gutierrez Middle School—will participate in Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corps capacity building model.  A four-year system for scaling STEM education, STEM Leader Corps is a sustainable capacity building model that develops and nurtures teachers and administrators as they support STEM in their school system.  Both STEMFormation and STEM Leader Corps have been certified as meeting the Global STEM Alliance (GSA) STEM Education Framework, which was developed by the New York Academy of Sciences and SRI Education.

“Harlingen Superintendent Dr. Arturo Cavazos, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Alicia Noyola, and the entire HCISD team are playing an incredibly important leadership role in accelerating STEM education in South Texas,” said, Phillip Mikula, Director of Educational Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We look forward to continuing to support HCISD’s work to prepare their students for future success.”

HCISD educators will also be supported by the Discovery Education Community as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

School System Adopts Full Suite of Digital Curriculum Resources for Selected Courses in Middle and High School as Part of an Ongoing Effort to Strengthen Digital Learning

Silver Spring, MD (June 11, 2019) — Indiana’s Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) today announced the renewal of its partnership with Discovery Education , the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms. Through this expanded, multi-year collaboration, Discovery Education will support the school district’s ongoing commitment to helping students maximize their fullest potential through modern classrooms powered by innovative digital curriculum resources.

Located at the southern tip of Indiana and bordering Kentucky and Illinois, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation serves a diverse population of nearly 23,000 students.  EVSC’s teachers and administrators are committed to providing outstanding educational opportunities to all students and are guided in their efforts by the district’s goal to maximize digital resources and learning.  Among the core strategies that will help district students reach their full potential is the continued implementation of a robust academic curriculum featuring resources that support personalized, rigorous instruction in all classrooms.

To support this strategy, EVSC will expand their use of Discovery Education’s award-winning Techbooks. In addition to continuing their use of the Science Techbook, EVSC’s educators will in the coming school year begin to integrate the Social Studies Techbook into middle school classroom instruction and the Math Techbook into middle school honors and high school classroom instruction.  Discovery Education’s Science, Social Studies, and Math Techbooks are currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across all 50 states and Canada. An immersive digital curriculum, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are aligned to rigorous standards and updated regularly at no cost. Each Techbook provides educators with detailed lesson plans, embedded formative assessments, hands-on activities, digital simulations, and robust teacher supports that deeply engage students in learning.

Discovery Education’s Science Techbook is built on the 5E model and helps teach students to read, write, and think like scientists through hands-on labs, digital explorations, an interactive glossary, data analysis activities, and powerful STEM resources. The Social Studies Techbook uses an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. The Math Techbook is a digital textbook that connects students to math through real-world problems, helping all learners develop long-lasting mastery of mathematical concepts. Math Techbook has been independently verified by EdReports.org to meet the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy.

EVSC science, social studies and math teachers integrating Techbooks into classroom instruction in the coming year will receive robust professional development from Discovery Education experts. Through these interactive professional learning opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

“Our expanded partnership is exciting,” said Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Director of Science, Dr. Vic Chamness.  “We have seen great engagement in science and are looking forward to our students expanding their use and learning with Discovery Education.”

EVSC educators using Techbook will also be supported by the Discovery Education Community as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“EVSC’s vision for excellence in its schools is inspiring,” said Discovery Education Partnerships Manager Andrew Harshey. “Discovery Education is proud to be supporting the efforts of Superintendent Smith and the entire Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation to continue the district’s efforts to help all students maximize their potential and be successful throughout each stage of their lives.”
