Call for Teen Filmmakers: Toyota and Discovery Education Announce National Video Challenge to Promote Safe Driving Habits

— 2020 TeenDrive365 Video Challenge Opens for Entry through Feb. 26: Winner to Receive $15,000 and Opportunity to Work with a Discovery Film Crew to Produce TV-Ready PSA —

Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday, September 25, 2019) –  A national video challenge for high school students to encourage their peers to avoid distractions and stay safe behind the wheel opened this week.

The competition – the 2020 TeenDrive365 Video Challenge by Toyota and Discovery Education – invites students in grades 9-12 to submit an original 30-60 second Public Service Announcement (PSA) about distracted driving to encourage their peers to stay safe behind the wheel.

Now in its ninth year, the challenge’s grand prize includes $15,000 and the opportunity to work with a Discovery, Inc. film crew to re-shoot the entry video into a TV-ready PSA. Also, as a new program component, the video challenge will announce up to 50 state merit winners, the winning individual or team will receive a TeenDrive365 prize pack. Teens can register and submit their entries today through Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at TeenDrive365.com.

“The ‘TeenDrive365 Video Challenge’ combines student collaboration, critical thinking and the use of immersive digital resources to help students to express their deepest concerns about safe and responsible driving,” said Tom Clowes, assistant principal, Westminster High School, Westminster, Md., Carroll County Public Schools. “Through this partnership, Toyota and Discovery Education are empowering students, educators and communities to have critical conversations about the power of making safe choices behind the wheel.”

A panel of judges comprised of community leaders, educators, communications experts and Toyota representatives will convene in March 2020 to select challenge winners. Since the inception of the competition, thousands of video submissions have been considered, and the effort has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student prizes. The top ten finalists’ videos – some amusing and others more serious in tone – communicate the importance of maintaining safe driving habits and avoiding fatal distractions while behind the wheel.

Other prizes include:
Second place prize: $10,000
Third place prize: $7,500
Fourth to tenth place prizes: Each receives $2,500
Four regional prizes: Each receives $1,000
People’s Choice: $5,000
State Merit winners: Prize pack valued at approx. $300

The video challenge is part of TeenDrive365, an educational initiative that encourages teens to avoid distractions and stay safe behind the wheel. The TeenDrive365 offers a range of content, tools and resources designed specifically for educators, teens and parents at no cost.

“With the reduction of safe driving programs from the school day, Toyota’s efforts to empower teens to make the right choices behind the wheel are more important than ever,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “When it comes the issue of safe driving, teens play a major role in influencing the behavior of their peers, and we are proud to collaborate with Toyota and educators nationwide, because we know that their work is literally saving lives.”

Wyoming Educators Obtain Computational Thinking Principles Through Ignite My Future in School

— Tata Consultancy Services Provides Local Albany County Educators Professional Development in Partnership with Discovery Education —

WYOMING| NEW YORK (Monday, September 23, 2019) Tata Consultancy Services, (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, have launched Ignite My Future in School within the Albany County School District. This free professional training event will connect more than 100+ local educators with education experts to learn about Ignite My Future in School, understand its purpose and receive hands-on curriculum training.

Recent studies show Wyoming graduates less than 45 computer science majors each year and only seven percent were female. A recently as 2016, universities in Wyoming did not graduate a single new teacher prepared to teach computer science. However, earlier this year, the National Science Foundation awarded nearly $1 million to the University of Wyoming (UW) to support integration of computer science education in K-8 classrooms and public libraries across the state. This followed a 2018 state legislature mandate to teach computer science in Wyoming’s K-12 schools by 2022. To support the state’s ambitious goals, TCS is launching Ignite My Future in School to help close the teacher preparedness gap by building the capacity of educators to integrate computational thinking into everyday lessons.

“We are so excited to be able to take part in this learning with ‘Ignite My Future’,” said Dr. Jubal Yennie, Superintendent of Albany County School District #1. “It will be very impactful for our students and teachers. I’m personally looking forward to seeing the Family Night activities in action. What a fantastic opportunity for our students and families to connect with the school in a fun, engaging atmosphere.”

Ignite My Future in School offers educators curriculum support through free instructional resources with computational thinking strategies embedded into subjects such as math, sciences, arts, and social studies, housed on a digital platform and offers year-round engagement. This interdisciplinary approach enables students to obtain in-demand critical thinking skills for 21st century careers across all industries.

“In today’s digital economy, computational thinking is as foundational as reading, writing and math. We are excited to partner with the State of Wyoming, empowering educators and preparing students to be future ready,” said Balaji Ganapathy, Head of Workforce Effectiveness, TCS.

TCS is also working alongside Wyoming’s Department of Education to bring goIT, TCS’ flagship student-facing STEM education program, to the entire state of Wyoming. In the fall of 2018, goIT piloted its programming with over 300 students Clear Creek and Kaycee Middle Schools in Buffalo, WY. This year, TCS and the DOE plan to bring goIT to three to five new districts and will host a statewide goIT competition in the spring of 2020.

On a national level, Ignite My Future in School aims to engage 20,000 teachers and one million U.S. students by 2021. As a first step towards this goal, TCS and Discovery Education have already partnered with U.S. school districts in Washington, D.C., Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri and California to launch this initiative. Since debuting in 2017, IMFIS has provided a value of more than $13.5 million to the U.S. education system and has engaged nearly 550,000 students and over 9,000 educators from all 50 states.

Wings for Kids and Discovery Education Launch New Effort to Promote Social and Emotional Learning, and Well-Being for Students Nationwide

– The Allstate Foundation’s ‘Good Starts Young’ Initiative Grants ‘Soar with Wings’ Multi-Year Grant to Inspire Millions of Young Learners to Use Social and Emotional Skills to Become Active Global Citizens –

Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday, September 18, 2019) Wings for Kids and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, launched a new initiative Soar with Wings: Social Emotional Skills for School and Life, an educational program created to equip educators with digital resources focused on social and emotional learning in the classroom and beyond. Soar with Wings provides free standards-aligned learning activities and lessons for students in grades K-5 that incorporate academics and fun, while helping them build social and emotional skills. The program, powered by Wings for Kids and sponsored by The Allstate Foundation, provides educators, youth leaders, and caregivers with tips and tools to help young learners soar.

“Wings for Kids is proud to partner with Discovery Education to expand the awareness that all learning is social and emotional, and every opportunity is ripe for social and emotional skill development,” said Bridget Laird, Chief Executive Officer, WINGS. “The ‘Soar with Wings’ launch signifies a new chapter in the future of education equality, where we lock arms to change the trajectory of the lives of youth. While we cannot change a child’s economic situation, we can foster a mindset that tells them they can succeed, and we can equip them with the skills needed to command an equitable chance at long-term academic success.”

To extend learning in classrooms nationwide, the Soar with Wings program also announced today, Bringing SEL to Life: Skills for the Classroom and Beyond, a Virtual Field Trip scheduled to premiere on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT. Shared from the perspective of Wings for Kids student advocates, the immersive experience will introduce students nationwide to the key pillars of emotional intelligence, including: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness and relationship skills. The Virtual Field Trip will transport students from inside the walls of their classrooms to Charleston, S.C. where they will meet other students who share a pledge called Words to Live By. Viewers will follow young learners throughout the day as they explain and model how the words of the pledge help them better understand themselves, control their actions and strengthen their relationships. Educators, parents and students are invited to register for the virtual event here. Participants are encouraged to join @DiscoveryEd, @WINGSforKids and other experts for a live Twitter chat during the premiere by submitting questions and sending pictures using #SoarwithWingsVFT.

“Empowering young people by harnessing their talents and passions will build a better world,” said Laura Freveletti, Senior Program Officer, The Allstate Foundation. “We believe the ‘Soar with Wings: Social Emotional Skills for School and Life’ program will prepare and inspire youth to be leaders and history-makers and achieve their full potential.”

Research shows that strong social and emotional skills are key to helping kids succeed in school, be prepared for the workforce, and become positive and healthy contributors to society. Research also shows that an effective social and emotional education has the power to strengthen attachment to school, and reduce negative classroom behavior – two significant predictors of who will stay in school through high school graduation. Wings for Kids, Discovery Education and The Allstate Foundation joined forces to launch Soar with Wings to help equip students with the skills they need to succeed and stay in school, then thrive in life. In addition to the Virtual Field Trip, Soar with Wings: Social Emotional Skills for School and Life provides digital lesson bundles, classroom activities, educator guides, family activities and professional learning videos. Overall, Wings for Kids’ long-term vision is to advance a world where there is equity in academics, opportunity, and emotional well-being for children across the nation and around the world, regardless of socioeconomic status.

“Discovery Education is proud to collaborate with Wings for Kids in their important work to bring critical social and emotional learning tools into classrooms nationwide,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Discovery Education. “‘We know from research that often times, school is the only place where these issues can be addressed before young people become active members of society. ‘Soar with Wings: Social Emotional Skills for School and Life’ provides educators with interactive, standards-aligned curriculum resources designed to foster new mindsets and build confidence in today’s youth.”

Soar with Wings: Social Emotional Skills for School and Life resources are available at soarwithwings.com and within Discovery Education Experience, an award-winning comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas. Discovery Education Experience helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding and evaluating information.

“The ‘Soar with Wings: Social Emotional Skills for School and Life’ helps educators effectively incorporate key social and emotional learning concepts into everyday classroom culture,” Peter Panico, 5th grade teacher, Devonshire Elementary School, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. “When engaged in social and emotional learning, our students must be surrounded by empathetic adults who are well trained in modeling encouraging behavior. Soar with Wings’ digitally immersive activations personalize learning environments that are impactful, informative and safe.”

Silver Spring, MD (September 12, 2019) — Oregon’s Reynolds School District (RSD) today announced the expansion of its multiyear partnership with Discovery Education the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.  In this collaboration’s latest phase, RSD’s high school science teachers are empowered to use Discovery Education’s award-winning Science Techbook and sustained, job-embedded professional development to create immersive, digital lessons in a 1:1 environment.

Serving students and families in the eastern Portland metro area, Reynolds School District is dedicated to graduating students that embrace lifelong learning and apply skills in technology, global literacy, creativity, and critical thinking to enhance family, career, and community.  To help reach this goal, the Reynolds High School just launched a new 1:1 initiative that is putting new Chromebooks into the hands of each student.  In addition, the district is shifting to a new inquiry-based approach to Science instruction designed to meet the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

To support RSD’s efforts to meet the NGSS, the school system selected Discovery Education’s Science Techbook for student use in high school science classrooms.  The Science Techbook series empowers educators to transform science instruction through a rich digital curriculum that includes video, audio, text, interactives with hands-on activities, and virtual labs that help educators differentiate instruction and provide a rich and engaging learning experience for students. Additional student features include Spanish/English text-to-speech and leveled reading tools and note-taking and highlighting capabilities.  The Science Techbook series also includes valuable STEM resources including STEM Project Starters that encourage students to connect math, technology, and engineering to their understanding of science concepts to produce creative solutions to real world problems. In addition, the STEM In Action resources help students connect their work to STEM careers, which promotes a clearer understanding of how skills used in school can be applied to jobs “in the real world.”

“Reynolds School District believes every student is entitled to an equitable opportunity to engage in three-dimensional learning focused on higher-order thinking and student-driven inquiry,” said RSD’s Curriculum Coordinator Tara DeBois.  “Our collaboration with Discovery Education has helped drive deeper student engagement in our middle school science classes, and we look forward to similar results in our high school science classes.”

To help RDS’S High School Science teachers maximize the Science Techbook and their new Chromebooks in the coming school year, Discovery Education will provide district educators numerous professional development opportunities. Through these interactive professional learning opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

“Discovery Education is excited to continue this powerful partnership,” said Nellie Herchenbach, Discovery Education Partnerships Manager.  “Through the creation of digital, 1:1 learning environments powered by Discovery Education’s Science Techbook, Reynolds School District is making great strides in their effort to help all students grow the skills and competencies needed to enhance family, career, and community connections.”

NECSD’s educators will also receive support from the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.
