3M and Discovery Education Search for America’s Next Top Young Scientist in 2020 Premier Middle School Science Competition

Competition Provides Young Innovators with an Unparalleled Experience and the Opportunity to Showcase STEM Ingenuity and Real-World Problem Solving

St. Paul, Minn. and Silver Spring, Md.  (Wednesday, January 29, 2020) 3M, the global science and innovation leader, and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, today announced the opening of the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). The annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge recruits students in grades 5-8 to compete for an exclusive mentorship with a 3M scientist, the $25,000 grand prize and earn the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. Competition entries are accepted at www.YoungScientistLab.com until the April 21, 2020 deadline.

The nation’s premier middle school science competition enters its thirteenth year of fostering a new generation of students who are inspired to improve the world through science and innovation. Each year, the program recognizes 10 finalists and up to 50 state merit winners nationwide who have demonstrated a passion for solving everyday problems. Previous challenge finalists have collaborated with 3M scientists to create solutions to a wide variety of real-world problems, including water conservation, noise pollution, energy consumption and public transportation efficiency. Last year’s winner, 14-year old Kara Fan, invented a first aid liquid bandage to reduce antibiotic overuse.

It’s easy for students to enter the 3M Young Scientist Challenge – it only takes an idea to get started and no prototypes or fancy labs are required. Students are invited to create a one to two-minute video communicating the science behind an idea aimed at solving a problem that positively impacts them, their school, family or community. Videos will not be judged on production skills and may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital cameras. Entries will be evaluated based on their creativity, scientific knowledge, and effective communication skills.  For more information on the contest and rules, or to submit entries, please visit YoungScientistLab.com.

In June 2020, ten finalists will be chosen to participate in an exclusive summer mentorship program, where they will work closely with and learn from a 3M scientist. Each finalist will also receive a trip to the 3M Innovation Center at the company’s headquarters in St. Paul, Minn., to compete at the final event in October 2020.

“At 3M, we are passionate about the application of science to improve our everyday lives.  The 3M Young Scientist Challenge and its summer mentorship program is a unique, immersive experience for students to explore innovation and nurture their ideas from concept to working prototype,” said Denise Rutherford, senior vice president, Corporate Affairs at 3M. “Year after year, it’s a true pleasure to work alongside young leaders as they imagine and discover what is possible through the power of science.”

Since its inception, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student prizes, paired students with world-renowned scientists to give them real-world insights and delivered science resources to millions of students, teachers and families across the country. 3M Young Scientist Challenge learning resources, including classroom interactives and family activities, are available at no cost at YoungScientistLab.com.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with 3M and power a program that shines light upon the innate curiosities and wonder of young scientists,” said Lori McFarling, president of Corporate Education Partnerships at Discovery Education. “As we collectively embrace unknowns of the future ahead, we look to our youngest leaders to inspire change for the betterment of our world – and ultimately open our eyes to the change that can result from student innovation, commitment and passion for innovation.”

The American Heart Association, the National Football League, and Discovery Education team up to take students on a Virtual Field Trip

The NFL PLAY 60 Huddle Up and Get Moving! Virtual Field Trip transports students to Super Bowl LIV while getting hearts pumping in classrooms nationwide.

Silver Spring, Md. (January 23, 2020) Getting active for 60 minutes a day is critical as kids who are regularly active have a better chance of a healthy adulthood, but only 20% of kids get enough activity to meet the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans[1]. That’s why the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, and the National Football League (NFL) in production collaboration with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, are working together to make physical activity fun and inspire healthy lifestyles.

At 1 p.m. EST on Jan. 30, the NFL PLAY 60 Huddle Up and Get Moving! Virtual Field Trip will premier. Broadcast in classrooms across the country, the Virtual Field Trip gives students a behind-the-scenes look at the Miami Dolphins practice facility and stadium, which is home to Super Bowl LIV. Students will also learn ways to strengthen their muscles and hearts with Miami Dolphins players and cheerleaders. The virtual event makes physical activity fun and inspires healthy lifestyles through cardio and strengthening exercises. The livestream encourages classrooms to get active and give back to their community as part of the NFL’s Huddle for 100 initiative, which is asking people to volunteer 100 minutes of their time for a total of 100 million minutes to celebrate the NFL’s 100th season.

“Working together with the American Heart Association on PLAY 60, we’re excited for another Virtual Field Trip that will get youth across the country moving towards a healthier and more active lifestyle,” said Anna Isaacson, SVP of Social Responsibility, NFL. “Encouraging students to volunteer in their communities through this year’s Virtual Field Trip as part of the NFL’s Huddle for 100 emphasizes the importance of giving back which has been a constant theme throughout NFL100.”

Now through Super Bowl LIV, educators and students can Huddle to Play it Forward by getting out and volunteering to improve their school community or neighborhood. Participants are encouraged to share a photo or 15-second video of their classroom demonstrating healthy behaviors in the community on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #GetMovingPLAY60.

“Starting in childhood, lifelong healthy eating and regular physical activity are key to great cardiovascular health and to preventing heart disease and its risk factors. Engaging children in PLAY 60 is a strategy to make movement fun,” said Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., MPH, the American Heart Association’s chief medical officer for prevention. “Active kids learn better. When kids are active, they focus more, think more clearly, react to stress more calmly, and perform and behave better in the classroom. Kids who are physically active as kids will help build healthy kids and future generations of adults with great health.”

The NFL and the American Heart Association have teamed up since 2006 to inspire kids through a fun and engaging way to get physically active. In addition to the NFL PLAY 60 Huddle Up and Get Moving! Virtual Field Trip, the American Heart Association and the NFL offer the free PLAY 60 app, which has been redesigned this year to help kids get more movement throughout the day. The PLAY 60 app allows users to control personalized avatars onscreen with their own physical movement. The app is available for iOS and Android devices.

Registration for the NFL PLAY 60 Huddle Up and Get Moving! Virtual Field Trip is now open at heart-nflplay60.com/register. To learn more about this program and to access the free resources, visit aha-nflplay60.discoveryeducation.com.

Oklahoma’s Woodward Public Schools Select Discovery Education Experience to Create Digital Learning Environments Districtwide

New Partnership Empowers District Teachers to Create Even More Engaging Classroom Lessons with Award-Winning Digital Resource

Silver Spring, Md. (January 22, 2020)Oklahoma’s Woodward Public Schools (WPS) announce the selection of Discovery Education Experience to support the creation of digital learning environments districtwide.  Created by Discovery Education – the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms – the award-winning Discovery Education Experience is a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas.

Located in the county seat, the Woodward Public Schools serve more than 2,500 students each day.  Dedicated to producing lifelong learners with a pioneer spirit: WPS students graduate cooperative, productive, responsible, and ready for the future.  To meet the district’s goals of increasing student achievement and closing achievement gaps, WPS has integrated digital content into classroom instruction.  After a careful review, the district selected Discovery Education Experience as its new digital resource for classroom use.

“The Woodward Public Schools’ educators are committed to the district’s ongoing, collaborative, data-driven effort to increase student achievement and close achievement gaps,” said Jerry Burch, WPS’s Deputy Superintendent Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology. “To accomplish this challenge, we are creating digital learning environments that engage students and support improved achievement.  While we’ve tried other providers of digital content, we’ve found that Discovery Education Experience provides our teachers the best suite of tools to support our needs.”

Discovery Education Experience—the latest iteration of Discovery Education’s popular Streaming Plus service—assists educators in creating real-world learning opportunities that engage all students and lead to improved academic achievement.  The service’s standards-aligned content is assignable and can be bookmarked and saved for later use and remixed to meet the varying needs of diverse student populations in a safe and secure environment.  In addition, the service’s up-to-date, high-quality, and ever-growing digital content collections, as well as a library of immersive virtual field trips and viewing parties, are drawn from trusted partners.

Students in elementary, middle and high school that have regular access to Discovery Education’s comprehensive, K-12 digital content service have higher attendance rates and are outpacing their peers on state assessments in reading, mathematics, and social studies. Additional findings tell a consistent story of how access to Discovery Education’s supplemental content services can be linked to higher student achievement, especially for racial/ethnic minorities and students impacted by poverty, disabilities, and limited English proficiency. Click here to learn more.

In addition to providing WPS’s educators access to Discovery Education Experience, this new partnership offers district teachers access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is incredibly excited to begin this new collaboration with the Woodward Public Schools,” said Ericka Dean, Discovery Education’s National Partnerships Consultant. “The combination of our rich digital resources and the district’s dedicated team of educators will create the exciting learning environments that will support Woodward’s students future success.”
