Now available in Discovery Education Experience and Science Techbook, the series presents simple and fun at-home experiments conducted by 3M scientists using common household items. The experiments are designed to reinforce core scientific principles in physics, chemistry, and biology and can be done from anywhere!

In addition, Discovery Education has added new content to the Viruses and Outbreaks channel currently found in Discovery Education Experience and the Science Techbook.  Launched earlier this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Viruses and Outbreaks channel is a curated collection of resources designed to give students access to the latest news and information about the pandemic; help them understand the science behind viruses and outbreaks; and learn strategies for staying emotionally and physically healthy during times of uncertainty. This dynamic collection of resources now includes videos, images, interactives, podcasts, studio boards, and activities in both English and Spanish.

“Teaching today’s students, either remotely or in a classroom, is a challenge,” said Quinae Jackson, an educator in Georgia’s Clayton County Public Schools. “My lessons need to be immediately engaging, or I will lose my students’ attention very quickly.  I am glad to have access to curated content from Discovery Education and their content partners.  Their resources give me confidence that my students will focus in on their lessons and stay engaged in instruction either at home or in the classroom.”

Educators using Discovery Education’s digital services also receive support from the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“The importance of providing students access to immersive digital content is in my mind, one of the enduring lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Discovery Education Vice President of Digital Content Robin Porter. “The new content recently added to Discovery Education Experience and the Science and Social Studies Techbooks is part of Discovery Education’s ongoing effort to ensure we are providing the educators and students we serve access to high quality digital resources so no matter where they are, they can continue their education.”

“Providing all district students meaningful, engaging science and math lessons is a critical component of our ongoing effort to prepare each learner for success beyond graduation,” said Raymond Central Public Schools’ Superintendent Derrick Joel.  “With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the flexibility to provide students those lessons either in the classroom or remotely took on greater importance.  We are excited to continue our partnership with Discovery Education, because no matter where our students are, exciting science and math lessons that prepare them for life beyond their K-12 experience are just a few clicks away.”

In addition to the ScienceX  suite of services, RCPS’s educators will also use Discovery Education’s  Math Techbook for instruction.  Discovery Education’s award-winning Techbooks are fully interactive, comprehensive digital textbooks currently used by more than 9.2 million students across all 50 states and Canada.  Updated regularly at no cost, Discovery Education’s Techbooks provide educators detailed lesson plans, embedded formative assessments, hands-on activities, digital simulations, and robust teacher supports that immerse students in instruction.

Through a deep collection of unparalleled digital assets and an accompanying print resources, the Math Techbook empowers educators to create engaging, blended learning environments.  The Math Techbook also connects students to mathematics through real-world problems worth solving, combines conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application to help all students develop a long-lasting mastery of mathematics.  The Math Techbook has been independently verified by EdReports.org as meeting the highest levels of mathematical content and pedagogy.

In addition to supporting RCPS’ efforts to improve college and career readiness, the expansion of the district’s partnership with Discovery Education expands teacher capacity.  Through Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corps capacity building model, district administrators and participating teachers will learn new strategies and best practices for building and sustaining a culture of STEM in their schools. With a focus on developing high-quality STEM instruction, creating interdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEM education across all middle schools, STEM Leader Corp will provide the robust professional development, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership support necessary to create centers of STEM excellence.

Diane Wolfe, the manager of Digital Learning Services for Nebraska’s Education Service Unit 2 and author of the grant that underwrote RCPS’s expanded partnership with Discovery Education, said, “The Raymond Central Public Schools have taken a very thoughtful approach to deepening its relationship with Discovery Education. By offering professional development opportunities that ensure district educators are prepared to use their new digital resources, the district is creating an environment in which classroom teachers can maximize the school system’s technology investment.”

The continuation of RCPS’s partnership with Discovery Education ensures district teachers ongoing access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

Daniel Boone Area School District’s New Partnership with Discovery Education Ensures All District Students Access to High-Quality Instruction From Any Device or Location

Suite of Dynamic Digital Services and Supporting Professional Learning Prepare Pennsylvania District’s Educators to Deliver Engaging Lessons in the Classroom or Virtual Environment

Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday April 29, 2020) Pennsylvania’s Daniel Boone Area School District (DBASD) today announced a new partnership with Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms. The digital services provided by Discovery Education to DBASD’s students and educators and the supporting professional development opportunities ensure district students access to exciting digital lessons no matter their location or device.

Located approximately 10 miles southeast of Reading, Pennsylvania, and approximately 50 miles northeast of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, DBASD takes pride in Learning Together; Advocating for All as they develop diverse learners within a safe environment.  To build the capacity of district educators to meet the evolving needs of students and the challenges of virtual learning, DBASD sought a digital instructional solution that could be used either in the classroom or remotely and that was supported by sustained professional learning.  Following a rigorous selection process, the district chose Discovery Education’s suite of award-winning digital services for classroom use in all schools districtwide.  Those resources include:

Discovery Education Experience.  The latest iteration of Discovery Education’s popular Streaming Plus service, Discovery Education Experience is a comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K–12 curricular areas.  Discovery Education Experience assists educators in creating real-world learning opportunities that engage all students and lead to improved academic achievement.  The service’s standards-aligned content is assignable and can be bookmarked and saved for later use and remixed to meet the varying needs of diverse student populations in a safe and secure environment.  In addition, the service’s up-to-date, high-quality, and ever-growing digital content collections, as well as a library of immersive virtual field trips and viewing parties, are drawn from trusted partners.

Discovery Education’s family of MathScience, and Social Studies Techbooks. Used by over 9.5 million students globally, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are aligned to rigorous standards and updated regularly at no cost. Each Techbook is an immersive, digital curriculum that provides educators detailed lesson plans, embedded formative assessments, hands-on activities, digital simulations, and robust teacher supports that deeply engage students in learning.

Discovery Education STEM Connect.  STEM Connect is a cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource that helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation, and in 2019 was awarded the prestigious CODiE award by the Software and Information Industry Association. Featuring flexible, modular learning units, STEM Connect provides students an easy-to-follow educational experience that includes real-world challenges, career connections, and hands-on activities.

Discovery Education Coding. Through Discovery Education Coding, elementary and middle school students are inspired to learn important coding concepts as they develop computational thinking skills through decomposition, logical reasoning, and problem solving. Based in part on the award-winning Discovery Education Coding service used by teachers across the United Kingdom, the U.S. version of Coding features a wide array of coding resources that help students take coding from concept to reality.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of providing all students access to flexible, digital curricula they can access from school or at home,” said Dr. Brett Cooper, Daniel Boone Area School District Superintendent.  “But equally important is preparing educators to effectively integrate digital content into their instructional practice in the classroom or online.  Through our new collaboration with Discovery Education, our educators will be better prepared to meet the needs of our students wherever they are now and in the future.”

To help educators maximize the value of their new digital resources, Discovery Education’s expert Professional Learning team will provide numerous professional development opportunities in the upcoming school year. During these professional development opportunities, educators will learn how to use their new digital resources.  In addition, they will explore best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize their impact, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

DBASD’s partnership with Discovery Education also provides district teachers access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is excited to work with the team at the Daniel Boone Area School District on this new initiative,” said Alissa McLean, Discovery Education’s Manager of Education Partnerships. “We are honored to be selected by the district for this work and believe that together we will create the dynamic digital learning experiences the district’s students need no matter where they are learning.”

The CVS Health Foundation and CATCH Global Foundation Premier New ‘Be Vape Free’ Virtual Field Trip April 30th in Partnership with Discovery Education

Virtual Learning Opportunity Empowers Students and Families to Make Healthier Science-Based Decisions About E-Cigarette Use

Silver Spring, Md. (Monday, April 27, 2020) – According to the Food and Drug Administration, 5 million youth in the United States currently use e-cigarettes: 1 in 4 high school students (27.5%) and 1 in 10 middle school students (10.5%). Vaping increases a person’s chance of experiencing complications from upper respiratory illnesses and some researchers believe there exists a relationship between vaping and COVID-19 patients. In growing efforts to combat the vaping epidemic, Be Vape Free presents the all-new Be Vape Free Clearing the Air Virtual Field Trip, premiering April 30th at 1pm ET. Learn more and register today.

The Be Vape Free Clearing the Air Virtual Field Trip provides young people and their families with the facts and science to make healthier decisions. As part of the virtual field trip, students will hear from other young people and gain powerful insights from their peers sharing firsthand experiences of avoiding the dangers of e-cigarette use. The on-demand field trip will also feature interviews with a marketing expert who can help young people think critically about influences such as advertising and social media. Students will learn effective refusal skills and debunk common vaping myths with first-hand insight from a leading health professional.

Be Vape Free is a nationwide initiative providing standards-aligned, no-cost, e-cigarette prevention resources for educators teaching grades 5-12 created in partnership with the CVS Health Foundation, CATCH Global Foundation, and Discovery Education. At the core of the initiative is the evidence-based CATCH My Breath vaping prevention program, developed by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health.

“Even though students are not in school, it remains critical for them to continue to see and hear from their peers and from experts about the dangers of e-cigarette use,” said Eileen Howard Boone, President of the CVS Health Foundation. “This virtual field trip will allow students, educators, and families to continue to benefit from the Be Vape Free resources made possible through our work with Discovery Education and the CATCH Global Foundation.”

“During this global pandemic, we need to work together to ensure students have access to no-cost virtual learning experiences that empower young people to make good life choices,” said Lori McFarling, President of Corporate Partnerships, Discovery Education. “This dynamic Virtual Field Trip expands the existing anti-vaping resources available to families as part of the national Be Vape Free initiative designed to aid educators and families in their efforts to stay healthy and safe.”

“Given the extra vulnerability vaping causes to respiratory pathogens like COVID-19, being vape free is more important than ever. The Be Vape Free Virtual Field Trip is another incredible resource created through this partnership that enables youth and communities to create a vape-free generation,” said Duncan Van Dusen, Founder and CEO of CATCH Global Foundation.

The Be Vape Free initiative ensures that everyone—students, parents, educators, and other community members—has access to no-cost, preventative resources to help educate and empower young people. With the support of educators and all community members, the Be Vape Free initiative is on a mission to foster the first vape-free generation. The Be Vape Free resources are available at BeVapeFree.org and through Discovery Education Experience’s Corporate Education Partnerships channel and the Viruses and Outbreaks channel.

Georgia’s Cobb County School District Launches Virtual Professional Learning Initiative Supported by Discovery Education

Face-to-Face Professional Learning Initiative Moved Online to Support Continued Professional Development During COVID-19 Pandemic

Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday April 22, 2020) Georgia’s Cobb County School District (CCSD) has launched a new, virtual professional learning initiative to help district educators make grade level content comprehensible and engaging for their English Learner (EL) students. To continue CCSD’s tradition of academic creativity and innovation, the district again selected Discovery Education for this endeavor. Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

The ESOL Leadership Team in CCSD’s Academic Division is working in close collaboration with Discovery Education to provide educators a new model of professional learning that will improve educational outcomes for English learners. To foster close collaboration between ESOL and content experts, this innovative research-based model brings ESOL Lead Teachers, district ESOL consultants, and classroom teachers together for job-embedded core learning and instructional support sessions. Originally intended to be delivered by Discovery Education’s professional learning staff in person, Discovery Education’s team is now, due the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting this professional learning initiative in a virtual environment.

Following these sessions, participants will work in teams at their local schools to combine Discovery Education’s powerful digital resources and strategies, the insight of classroom teachers, and the expertise of the district and local school ESOL experts to engage students in developing their language skills as they learn the content. The curated resources and embedded additional research-based strategies from this initiative empower educators to initiate and sustain long-term shifts in instructional practice supporting English Learners.

The second largest school system in Georgia, the Cobb County School District serves nearly 113,000 students, including over 16,000 English Learners, across 112 schools, including 67 elementary schools, 25 middle schools, 17 high schools, one charter school, one special education center, and one adult education center.  For 20 years, CCSD educators districtwide have used Discovery Education Experience—which is provided to all teachers and students across the state through Georgia Public Broadcasting—to support the creation of student-centric digital learning environments.  In 2019, CCSD partnered with Discovery Education to launch a comprehensive STEM professional learning initiative.  This program, called Teaching Relevance and Innovative Learning, is helping district educators cultivate future problem solvers through problem-based learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Providing our educators robust professional learning that helps them evolve their classroom practice has always been a critical part of the Cobb County School District’s effort to support the growth and development of all students,” said Jennifer Lawson, Cobb County School District’s Chief Academic Officer. “We are excited to build on our existing relationship with Discovery Education, and even more pleased this initiative can be undertaken virtually.”

The continuation of CCSD’s partnership with Discovery Education ensures district teachers ongoing access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is excited to expand its partnership with the Cobb County School District,” said Molly Hebert, Discovery Education’s Senior Director of Urban Partnerships.  “While COVID-19 has thrown significant challenges at educators across the country, we are excited to continue providing our partners the professional learning their teachers need to prepare for the education beyond this crisis.”
