Mastercard and Discovery Education Partner to Empower Girls with STEM Learning Through the Signature Girls4Tech™ Program

Silver Spring, Md. (Thursday, April 22, 2021) — With the goal of providing five million girls with an engaging STEM education by 2025, Mastercard has partnered with Discovery Education to launch the latest phase of the award-winning Girls4Tech initiative. Girls4Tech is Mastercard’s signature science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program geared towards giving girls in middle and high school access to STEM resources and career exploration tools with an emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cyber security. Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms. Together, the partnership aims to reach more than 2 million girls.

In partnership with Discovery Education, Girls4Tech now offers a robust array of no-cost, standards-aligned, and on-demand digital resources that illustrate how technology can be used to solve the problems young people care about. Included in these resources are career profiles featuring Mastercard’s dynamic and diverse group of female cybersecurity professionals who fight hackers and help keep sensitive information safe on a global scale. The career profiles include activities and educator guides that inspire girls to dream big. In addition, this latest phase of partnership features digital lesson bundles focusing on the foundations and evolution of technology and binary code.

“The current and future workforce needs employees with hot skills like cyber and AI, so the more we can do to introduce these subjects in the early years, the better off we’ll all be,” said Susan Warner, vice president, talent management and community engagement, and founder of Girls4Tech. “Our partnership with Discovery Education will help us bring these hot jobs to life.”

To further impact girls around the world, Girls4Tech will also expand to Canada beginning with the provinces of British Columbia and Ontario. The expansion to Canada helps fill the need for Francophone STEM content that sparks interest for girls in topics like AI and cyber security. As part of the expansion, Discovery Education will host future virtual and in-person events focusing on the importance of STEM education for young women, as well as providing educators with resources to integrate STEM into their instructional plans.

“We are incredibly excited to enter this new phase of our partnership with Mastercard,” said Lori McFarling, president of corporate & community partnerships at Discovery Education. “Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Mastercard, we are proud to support young women across the U.S. and now Canada not only see themselves in a future STEM career, but also connect directly to resources that will propel them into the wonderfully wide and curious worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math and beyond.”

In 2019, Mastercard commissioned a study to understand gender and generational differences surrounding perceptions and attitudes of STEM-based topics and programs. The study also explored challenges and motivations students cited for pursuing college majors and careers path. The study showed that women are less confident, receive less encouragement, and need more mentors in STEM. Girls4Tech provides support to young women in each of these critical areas. South Dakota’s Pierre School District Selects Discovery Education to Support Its Mission to Inspire All Students to Achieve Their Potential

SILVER SPRING, MD (Thursday, April 15, 2021)—South Dakota’s Pierre School District (PSD) today announced the launch of a new partnership with Discovery Education supporting the district’s mission to inspire all students to achieve their potential. Through this new collaboration, educators, and students across the school system will soon receive access to a suite of Discovery Education’s award-winning digital learning resources. With these resources, district educators are empowered to support students’ future success through curiosity, engagement, and real-world learning experiences at home, in the classroom, or wherever instruction is taking place. Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

After a year of providing students instruction in both the in-person and remote environments, PSD sought flexible digital resources that would offer all students the flexibility to continue their instruction whenever or wherever learning takes place. Following a rigorous review, the district selected Discovery Education to provide the following digital resources to teachers and students:

The Discovery Education platform. Discovery Education’s flexible K-12 learning platform connects educators to a vast collection of compelling, high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, and professional learning resources. Together, these resources give educators everything they need to facilitate instruction in any learning environment and create lasting educational impact.

Discovery Education’s team continues adding, contextualizing, and organizing exciting new content and timely resources to the platform each month in response to current events and the ever-evolving needs of educators. These resources, sourced from trusted partners, are aligned to state and national standards, and help educators bring the outside world into teaching and learning every day.

Finally, the Discovery Education platform is designed to work within school systems’ existing infrastructure and workflows. Through expanded partnerships with Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Schoology, Canvas, and Clever, integrating the platform into existing IT architecture is easier than ever. PSD educators and students districtwide will have access to this resource.

Discovery Education Science Techbooks. The Discovery Education Science Techbook series—which is currently used in classrooms across the United States and Canada—is a comprehensive, research-backed science solution for grades K-12. Delivered through Discovery Education’s K-12 platform, the Science Techbook series drives engagement with exclusive phenomena and interactive content. Virtual and hands-on investigations, STEM activities, and a variety of instructional supports enhance the delivery of impactful, blended instruction, in person or at a distance.

Available with the Science Techbooks are coordinated digital and print teacher guides offering unit, concept, and lesson overviews, standards connections, and differentiation activities to inform instructional planning and guide three-dimensional learning. Teacher editions also provide flexible pacing options, embedded teacher notes, and Pathways for Learning to address diverse learners. Print student editions and interactive worktexts are available for every grade level and integrate seamlessly with the digital and hands-on assets of this comprehensive program. PSD educators and students in grades 3-5 will have access to this resource.

Mystery Science. Mystery Science—which joined the family of Discovery Education services in 2020—is an easy-to-use digital resource featuring ready-to-teach multimedia science and STEM lessons for K-5 students. Each lesson begins by posing a question commonly asked by young students, which is followed by a series of brief videos and prompts used to guide class discussion. The lesson concludes with an activity incorporating basic supplies commonly found in a classroom or at home.

Mystery Science lessons cover a wide range of questions children wonder about, including Where do rivers flow? Could a volcano pop up where you live? Why do the stars come out at night? and How far can a whisper travel?  PSD educators in grades K-2 will have access to this resource.

With this suite of dynamic digital resources, school leaders believe they now have engaging adaptable digital resources that will help the district create new learning opportunities for all students.

“COVID-19 and its effects have spurred us to rethink how we deliver instruction,” said Troy Wiebe, the Pierre School District’s Director of Education. “Our new partnership with Discovery Education puts high-quality digital resources into the hands of all our educators and students and provides us with tremendous flexibility in how we deliver instruction now and in the future.”

To help the district recognize the full return on their EdTech investment, Discovery Education will provide PSD’s educators dedicated professional learning. Through these interactive professional development sessions, participants will learn best practices for integrating their new digital resources into instruction. Effective professional development will maximize the power of these resources, increase student engagement in learning, and support students’ continued academic development.

PSD’s partnership with Discovery Education also provides all district teachers access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic beginning to come into sight, school systems nationwide are beginning to look at how they can better deliver instruction to students in the post-COVID-19 environment, and in South Dakota, the Pierre School District is leading this conversation,” said Adriana Ramirez, Discovery Education’s Manager of Education Partnerships. “The Pierre School District has a laser-like focus on creating up-to-date, flexible learning environments that will support the success of all learners, and Discovery Education is excited and honored to support their work.”

Ohio’s Reynoldsburg City Schools Selects Discovery Education’s Flexible K-12 Learning Platform to Create More Up to Date, Relevant, and Culturally Responsive Learning Opportunities

SILVER SPRING, MD (Tuesday, March 16, 2021)Ohio’s Reynoldsburg City Schools (RCSD) today announced the selection of Discovery Education’s flexible K-12 learning platform to support the creation of more relevant and culturally responsive learning opportunities districtwide. In addition to bringing Discovery Education’s award-winning content to all schools, this new partnership also provides educators unique professional learning opportunities that will support the use of their new digital resources and help the school system maximize the return on their edtech investment. Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

In 2020, RCSD began searching for a K-12, cross-curricular digital resource that would support the district’s goal of providing all students innovative, customized learning opportunities that are up-to-date and culturally relevantFollowing a rigorous review, RCSD selected Discovery Education’s flexible K-12 learning platform for use in all classrooms districtwide. Connecting schools to a vast collection of compelling high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, and professional learning resources, the Discovery Education platform gives educators everything they need to facilitate instruction in any learning environment and create lasting educational impact.

Discovery Education’s team continues adding, contextualizing, and organizing exciting new content and timely resources to the platform each month in response to current events and the ever-evolving needs of educators. These resources, sourced from trusted partners, are aligned to state and national standards and help educators bring the outside world into teaching and learning every day.

Finally, the Discovery Education platform is designed to work within school systems’ existing infrastructure and workflows. Through expanded partnerships with Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Schoology, Canvas, and Clever, integrating the platform into existing IT architecture is easier than ever.

“To reach our district goal of ensuring every child achieves and progresses, the Reynoldsburg City Schools needs to continuously rethink and redesign learning to meet the ever-changing demands of our students and the world they live in,” said Dr. Melvin J. Brown, RCSD Superintendent. “Providing our teachers with high-quality digital resources that support the engagement of all students wherever learning takes place is critically important to our efforts to meet our district goals. For these reasons, we are excited to partner with Discovery Education.”

To help educators integrate their new digital resources into instruction in the coming school year, Discovery Education will provide RCSD teachers dedicated professional learning. Through these interactive professional development sessions, participants will learn best practices for using their new digital resources. Effective professional development will maximize the power of these digital resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and support students’ continued academic development.

The school system’s new partnership with Discovery Education also provides all district teachers access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

Discovery Education Brings Together Thought Leaders to Amplify Social-Emotional Learning

Educators, Students, and Families Receive Access to Dynamic Learning Resources for SEL Day

Silver Spring, Md. (Monday, March 15, 2021) — Educators, students, and families are invited to explore social-emotional learning with dynamic digital resources from Discovery Education and its diverse network of partners. In recognition of the second annual Social and Emotional Learning Day (March 26), the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum and professional learning presents communities no-cost content for wherever learning takes place.

Social-Emotional Learning is often described as the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Research reveals that SEL programs provide students the ability to manage stress and depression, improve self-esteem, and better school behavior. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) key pillars of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship skills.

Discovery Education joins communities across the world to celebrate the importance of social-emotional learning by highlighting the new Social-Emotional Learning Center available in its award-winning K-12 learning platform. The Social-Emotional Learning Center presents a curated collection of hundreds of resources designed to support educators as they integrate SEL into core instruction and to help students develop social and emotional competencies. Content in the Center is aligned to SEL competencies and is organized into tabs that focus on educator professional development and school culture, ready-to-use instructional activities, and multimodal, student-facing digital content for all grade bands. The SEL Center is made possible in part through The Allstate Foundation’s generous support and commitment to providing innovative SEL resources for students, teachers, and school communities.

The SEL Center resources feature Discovery Education original content, content from trusted partners like CASEL, Inner Explorer, and Everyday Speech, as well as content created in partnership with LG Electronics USA, Wings for Kids, and RFK Human Rights. CASEL resources, including their SEL framework, support educators’ SEL implementation in the classroom. Inner Explorer provides students in grades PK-12 short, daily exercises teaching practical breathing and relaxation techniques proven to heighten awareness of senses, regulate thoughts and emotions, and develop compassion and connection. Resources from Everyday Speech include videos, activities, and worksheets encompassing multiple SEL strategies organized by each of the CASEL competencies. The SEL Center is a one-stop shop for teacher access to dynamic SEL supports and will be regularly refreshed with new resources from an expanding array of partners.

A number of the resources provided through corporate and community partners are also available to all educators and communities at no-cost, including:

Amazing Me
The Dove Self-Esteem Project and Discovery Education have teamed up to deliver the best in SEL, health, and confidence-building resources for 4th and 5th grade students. Silver Spring, Md. “The economic consequences of the pandemic have shined a spotlight on financial fragility in our country and the need for continued financial education. With Financial Literacy Month coming up in April, we are thrilled to open the 2021 Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Contest and provide communities with an engaging opportunity to help students and their local school make smart financial decisions,” said Danielle Robinson, Executive Director, Jackson Charitable Foundation.

“The challenge empowers schools with the financial literacy and technological resources needed to educate students and close the equity gap,” said Dr. Mark Andrade, Principal of Rhode Island’s Potter-Burns Elementary School, 2020 winner of the Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Contest. “Winning the contest exemplifies the power of community collaboration in coming together virtually to support Potter-Burns Elementary School and all its students in their pursuit of a secure financial future.”
