Texas’ Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Expands Partnership with Discovery Education to Accelerate Growth of the District’s Culture of STEM Teaching and Learning

-Discovery Education’s Digital STEM Curriculum Resources and Professional Learning Set to Help Educators at Four More District Schools Create Dynamic STEM Learning Experiences-

Silver Spring, MD (June 17, 2019) — Texas’ Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District (HCISD) today announced the expansion of its multi-year partnership with Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.  In this collaboration’s latest phase, Discovery Education will support four more HCISD schools as they launch a new effort to accelerate the growth of the school system’s culture of STEM teaching and learning.

HCISD is located in one of the nation’s fastest growing regions–South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley–and is dedicated to preparing its students for success in the area’s rapidly expanding economy and beyond.  Last year, in support of HCISD’s strategic plan, Transforming Learning for Global Achievement, Discovery Education began providing educators in the district’s STEM2 Preparatory Academy dynamic digital content and sustained professional learning they are now using to create engaging, STEM-focused digital learning environments.  In this new stage of partnership, Discovery Education will support educators at two more HCISD elementary schools and two HCISD middle schools as they create immersive STEM learning experiences that will heighten students’ college and career readiness.

“Discovery Education’s dynamic digital resources and sustained, job-embedded professional development were initially chosen by HCISD to support our strategic plan’s key goals,” said Harlingen Consolidated Schools’ Chief Academic Officer Alicia Noyola.  “Together with Discovery Education, educators at the STEM2 Preparatory Academy are having great success as they use these resources to deliver high-quality instruction that results in maximum student achievement.  Expanding this powerful partnership will help us replicate this success in even more schools.”

Two HCISD elementary schools—Travis Elementary School and Rodriguez Elementary School—will shortly begin integrating Discovery Education STEM Connect into classroom instruction. STEM Connect is a cutting-edge, web-based, interdisciplinary K-8 supplemental resource that helps students develop the creative, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills they need for success beyond graduation, and was recently awarded the prestigious CODiE award by the Software and Information Industry Association. Featuring flexible, modular learning units, STEM Connect provides students an easy-to-follow educational experience that includes real-world challenges, career connections, and hands-on activities.  In addition, the educators at these two schools will also participate in Discovery Education’s STEMformation initiative.

A comprehensive, three-year system of professional development, STEMformation helps educators strengthen and sustain a culture of STEM at individual school sites and guides educators as they master STEM instructional strategies.  With a focus on developing high-quality STEM lessons, creating transdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEM education school-wide, STEMformation provides the robust professional development, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership to create a center of STEM excellence.

In addition, educators from two HCISD middle schools—Vela Middle School and Gutierrez Middle School—will participate in Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corps capacity building model.  A four-year system for scaling STEM education, STEM Leader Corps is a sustainable capacity building model that develops and nurtures teachers and administrators as they support STEM in their school system.  Both STEMFormation and STEM Leader Corps have been certified as meeting the Global STEM Alliance (GSA) STEM Education Framework, which was developed by the New York Academy of Sciences and SRI Education.

“Harlingen Superintendent Dr. Arturo Cavazos, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Alicia Noyola, and the entire HCISD team are playing an incredibly important leadership role in accelerating STEM education in South Texas,” said, Phillip Mikula, Director of Educational Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We look forward to continuing to support HCISD’s work to prepare their students for future success.”

HCISD educators will also be supported by the Discovery Education Community as they transform students’ learning experiences with dynamic digital media. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing and inspiration.

Major League Baseball and Discovery Education Invite Students and Educators Nationwide to Participate in the Global Sustainability Challenge

–In Latest Phase of Collaboration, MLB and Discovery Education Provide All U.S. & Canada-Based Students the Chance to Explore Their Impact on the Environment and the Importance of Environmental Stewardship–

Silver Spring, Md. (Monday, May 20, 2019)Major League Baseball® (MLB) and Discovery Education, the leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, invite all students and educators nationwide to participate in the Global Sustainability Challenge. During this unique no-cost event, participants will explore their impact on the environment and learn about the importance of environmental stewardship through a set of flexible digital resources that can either be integrated by educators into classroom instruction or completed independently by students over the summer as part of an enrichment activity.

Through a weekly challenge, participating students will explore different conservation efforts currently ongoing in MLB ballparks across the United States and Canada.  Each of the six challenges will be accompanied by a video from an MLB executive that will immerse students in a variety of topics including recycling, local food sourcing, water conservation, and energy efficiency.  By learning how various baseball teams address these important sustainability issues, students will be challenged to think about how these topics relate to their own community.

After viewing these videos, students will use an extensive collection of curated resources aligned to each global sustainability challenge area to further investigate each topic. These resources, which include activity sheets, STEM career videos, and more, will help students establish career connections and share their findings with classmates, family, and friends throughout the summer. Additional details and the first week’s Challenge can be found here.

“Major League Baseball is excited to share with students and teachers nationwide the efforts our Clubs are making to be good stewards of the environment in their ballparks,” said Barbara McHugh, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Major League Baseball. “By partnering with Discovery Education to present the Global Sustainability Challenge, we are hoping students are inspired by the great work of our Clubs and are encouraged to think about how they can help protect our shared environment.”

The Global Sustainability Challenge is part of an ongoing multi-year partnership between Discovery Education and MLB. Through this collaboration, educators using Discovery Education’s Science Techbooks, Streaming Plus, and STEM Connect are empowered to use engaging, baseball-themed digital resources to help students connect America’s Pastime to key science and STEM concepts through real-world data and exciting gameday experiences that drive deeper learning.

“Discovery Education is thrilled to partner with Major League Baseball to launch the Global Sustainability Challenge,” said Discovery Education President of K-12 Education Scott Kinney. “Providing students engaging ways to explore interesting science and STEM topics like sustainability and environmental stewardship during the summer months is a tremendous double-play!”

The Drug Enforcement Administration, DEA Educational Foundation, and Discovery Education Announce Winners for 2019 ‘Operation Prevention’ Video Challenge

— Tennessee Teens Named Winners of People’s Choice Award and Nationwide PSA Video Challenge to Educate Youth on the Dangers of Opioid Misuse —

Silver Spring, Md. (Thursday, May 9, 2019) – The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the DEA Educational Foundation, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, today named four first place 2019 Operation Prevention Video Challenge winners. Dalton Sherrill, Jackson HammYanely Luna, and Brian Wang of Coffee County Central High School (CCCHS) in Manchester, Tenn., will receive $10,000 for their winning public service announcement (PSA) entitled What Could’ve Been, which highlights the life-altering effects of opioid misuse. The students also received the most votes during the People’s Choice award voting period, earning them a trip for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of DEA training at the DEA’s Training Academy in Quantico, Va.

The challenge invited teens across the nation to submit 30-60 second video public service announcements that capture their unique voice in order to communicate the opioid epidemic as a national crisis. In What Could’ve Been, a teenager’s opioid addiction shortens his life, halting the joys of growing into his adulthood. The character captures the essence of the challenge and encourages teens to research the opioid epidemic to identify its widespread impact on the country.

“Congratulations to the winners from Coffee County Central High School on creating a gripping video message that illustrates the gravity of opioid addiction and how it can devastate lives,” said Sean Fearns, chief of community outreach, DEA. “The role peer-to-peer influence has in preventing opioid misuse before it starts cannot be overstated. We are truly encouraged by the leadership we’ve seen exhibited by our nation’s youth.”

The third annual video challenge is a part of Operation Prevention, a joint nationwide education initiative that aims to educate students about the science behind addiction, and its impact on the brain and body. Available at no-cost, the program’s resources help promote lifesaving discussions at home and in the classroom. The winning video was chosen by a panel of educators and judges from Discovery Education, the DEA, and the DEA Educational Foundation.

Other Operation Prevention Video Challenge winners include:
Second Place: Aria Kydd of Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science
Worcester Polytechnic Institute| Worcester, Mass.
Awarded: $5,000 for her video Think Again

Third Place: Jake Sandvik of Cody High School
Park County School District | Cody, Wyo.
Awarded: $1,000 for his video Wanna

People’s Choice Award: Dalton Sherrill, Jackson Hamm, Yanely Luna, and Brian Wang
Coffee Country Central High School | Coffee County School District | Manchester, Tenn.
Awarded: A trip to Quantico, Va., for an exclusive tour of DEA training for their video What Could’ve Been

“Not only did these students make an impactful and creative PSA, they took time to include community members in it. That choice likely contributed to them winning the ‘People’s Choice Award’; everyone loved seeing the video spread throughout the community,” said Megan Eaves, assistant principal at Coffee Country Central High School. “I think I can speak for all of the administrators and teachers at CCCHS when I say that we are very proud of the work these students put into their video, and we are excited about their win.”

Coffee Country Central High School Career and Technical Education Director Richard Skipper continued, “I say this a lot, every one of our kids will become something great, we just don’t know what! Audio visual production classes at CCCHS provide wonderful opportunities for students to thrive and our newest ‘Operation Prevention Video Challenge’ winners are a powerful example of what is possible.”

First, second, and third place prizes are provided courtesy of the DEA Educational Foundation and the People’s Choice Award prize is made possible by support from the DEA. Winning videos can be viewed at operationprevention.com, and will be featured across DE and DEA digital, including social media platforms. Program resources are accessible for free online and also through Discovery Education Streaming Plus.

“Discovery Education is proud to support the DEA in a critical effort to combat the epidemic of prescription opioid misuse, which is impacting communities nationwide,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “We’re inspired by the number of young people across the country who are taking action to save lives by participating in the ‘Operation Prevention Video Challenge’. Congratulations to this year’s winners, finalists and participations.”

Louisiana Public Broadcasting and Discovery Education Renew Long-Term Partnership Empowering Educators to Create Engaging Digital Learning Experiences

–In Its 16th Year, Partnership Between LPB and Discovery Education Helps Public Broadcaster Continue Serving as the State’s Largest Classroom–

Silver Spring, Md. (May 7, 2019) – Discovery Education, the leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, today announced a renewal of its long-term partnership with Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB). LPB’s extension of its 16-year collaboration with Discovery Education continues empowering K-12 educators to create dynamic digital learning experiences with high-quality content from Discovery Education Streaming Plus.

LPB is Louisiana’s largest classroom over the air, on every device, in schools, and in the community.  LPB’s Educational Services Department is committed to providing extensive information, lesson plans, materials, and digital resources to support formal K-12 education statewide. Through its long-term partnership with Discovery Education, LPB offers educators a host of digital resources, such as Discovery Education Streaming Plus, that help teachers build engaging learning experiences for all students.

Discovery Education Streaming Plus is a comprehensive digital service that supplements teaching and learning across all K–12 curricular areas.  Discovery Education Streaming empowers educators to create dynamic learning environments that mirror students’ use of technology outside the classroom through engaging lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes. Students can access images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, books on tape, articles, and videos, as well as a collection of new STEM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

Students in elementary, middle and high school that have regular access to Streaming resources have higher attendance rates and are outpacing their peers on state assessments in reading, mathematics, and social studies. Additional findings tell a consistent story of how access to Discovery Education Streaming can be linked to higher student achievement, especially for racial/ethnic minorities and students impacted by poverty, disabilities, and limited English proficiency. “Louisiana Public Broadcasting is dedicated to education and cultural enrichment statewide. As part of that effort, we provide educators a robust online platform that delivers the best and most effective digital content to students and educators each day,” said President and CEO of Louisiana Public Broadcasting Beth Courtney. “Our partnership with Discovery Education is critical to providing the most well-researched digital learning content to Louisiana’s classrooms, so we are excited to continue this valuable collaboration.”
