USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education Bring the Power of Story to Life in ‘Our Stories are Stronger Than Hate’ Virtual Field Trip

— Virtual Event Empowers Students in Grades 5-12 to Take Action
Against the Growing Wave of Racism and Intolerance in our Nation —

Silver Spring, Md. (Tuesday, November 5, 2019) – USC Shoah Foundation—The Institute for Visual History and Education (USC Shoah Foundation) and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, invite students in grades 5-12 to take part in a powerful virtual experience this afternoon.

Based on the idea that everyone has a story to tell – from filmmakers, to survivors of genocide, to artists, to middle and high school students – ‘Our Stories are Stronger Than Hate’ gives students tools to counter bullying, prejudice, and the growing hate in our schools by listening to stories and testimonies that build empathy, understanding, and human connections. Premiering at 1 p.m. EST on Nov. 5, 2019, educators are encouraged to register their class for this impactful event here.  ‘Our Stories are Stronger Than Hate’ will be available on-demand at teachingwithtestimony.com/virtual-field-trip.

‘Our Stories are Stronger Than Hate’ will transport students to USC Shoah Foundation in Los Angeles to hear from powerful voices including:

  • Steven Spielberg: Founder of USC Shoah Foundation and one of the most prominent storytellers of our time
  • Eva Schloss: Holocaust survivor, speaker, author as well as friend and posthumous stepsister of diarist Anne Frank
  • Samantha Grady: College student, musician, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting survivor
  • David Kassan: Acclaimed realist painter whose artwork captures humanity and portrays the stories of Holocaust survivors

By listening to these transformative voices, students will feel inspired to take steps toward countering hate, whether at school, in the community, or in the world.

“Only when we proactively counter hate can we work to resolve it. Through Teaching with Testimony and today’s virtual field trip, we can empower students to find their voice and to confront hate in their communities,” said Dr. Claudia Wiedeman, Director of Education. “And now more than ever we need to share powerful testimonies of empathy and courage that can show we all have the innate potential to change the future.”

USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education will host a live Twitter chat during the premiere using the hashtag #StrongerThanHateVFT. Educators are encouraged to join the conversation and download the accompanying standards-aligned educator guide, which helps illuminate strategies for how to talk to students about these difficult topics.

“By giving students an opportunity to stand up against hate and find their voice, we reinforce the importance of building empathy and understanding for one another,” said Karen Wells, Library Media Specialist at Midland High School in Pleasant Plains, Ark. “Thanks to free resources like today’s virtual field trip and Teaching with Testimony, educators everywhere can ensure that students have access to meaningful and actionable curricula that has the power to impact real, positive change.”

‘Our Stories are Stronger Than Hate’ is part of Teaching with Testimony, an educational program designed for grades 5-12 that challenges students to employ empathy, build critical-thinking skills, and become inspired to create a brighter future after listening to firsthand accounts from survivors and witnesses of genocide. In addition to being deeply integrated into sections of Discovery Education’s Social Studies TechbookDiscovery Education Experience, and Espresso, the program includes digitally immersive classroom resources, an annual student video challenge, and activities that provide educators with the tools they need to teach students to ultimately counter hate and respond to injustice.

14-Year-Old Named America’s Top Young Scientist

–Kara Fan Wins Top Prize at 2019 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her Nano-Silver Liquid Bandage Innovation–

St. Paul, Minn. and Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday, October 30, 2019) –3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd), have named 14-year-old Kara Fan from San Diego, California, the winner of the 2019 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). Kara invented a first aid liquid bandage using nano-silver technology to reduce the risk of superbug infections caused by antibiotic overuse.

Using the biosynthesis method—a multi-step, enzyme-catalyzed process where substrates are converted into more complex products in living organisms—Kara created a nano-silver (AgNP) solution using lemon leaf and silver nitrate to effectively kill and prevent the growth of bacteria. Her solution was tested using the Kirby-Bauer Method against Staphylococcus epidermidis, E. coli K12 and Bacillus subtilis on a Petri plate to measure the zone of inhibition (the circular area around the spot of the antibiotic use in which bacteria colonies do not grow). Finally, Kara mixed the nano-silver solution with a water-soluble polymer (PVP) to create the liquid bandage.

Kara formulated a nano-silver liquid bandage to replace the use of more commonly used over-the-counter antibiotics ointments and first aid treatments. With her invention, Kara hopes to reduce the number of incidents related to drug-resistant infections.

Kara, a ninth-grader at Westview High School, Poway Unified School District, competed against nine other finalists during a live competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. October 28-29. As the winner of this year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge, Kara was awarded the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” as well a $25,000 cash prize and a surprise destination trip.

“Our communities want science to solve the world’s toughest challenges; we hear this in our research on the State of Science. This year’s finalists have truly inspired us with their ingenious efforts to think innovatively and solve real-world problems,” said Denise Rutherford, senior vice president, corporate affairs at 3M. “As a company that remains deeply committed to STEM education and advancement, we wish this next generation of science leaders the best on their continued journey. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Kara Fan, and all our Young Scientist Challenge finalists.”

As part of the program, challenge finalists had the unique opportunity to work one on one with a 3M scientist to transform their ideas from concept to physical prototype as part of the competition’s mentorship program. Kara was paired with Sara Frisco, a 3M advanced product development engineer in the commercial solutions division.

At the final event, finalists presented their inventions to a panel of scientists and leaders from 3M and Discovery Education. In addition to presenting their prototypes, finalists were also paired up to compete in two mini-challenges in which they used 3M technologies and materials to solve, and were evaluated on skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

This year’s Young Scientist Challenge finalists received a variety of prizes from 3M and Discovery Education. The second, third and fourth place winners each received a $1,000 prize and one of a kind destination trip. These extraordinary students are:

In second place, Caroline Crouchley, an eighth-grader at Garden City Middle School from Garden City, New York, developed a sustainable method of public transportation that eliminates the need for a diesel engine or electric motor in trains.

In third place, Jordan Prawira, an eighth-grader at Altamont Elementary School from Mountain House, California, invented a wind turbine inspired by hurricane formation concepts to improve the performance and efficiency of current wind turbines.

In fourth place, Camellia Sharma, a seventh-grader at George H. Moody Middle School from Glen Allen, Virginia, developed a water leakage detection system to identify underground water leakage and reduce the estimated 48.6 billion cubic meters of water lost annually through current distribution systems worldwide.

The fifth through tenth place winners each received a $1,000 prize and a $500 excitations gift cardThese finalists, in alphabetical order by last name, are:

  • Samyak Shrimali from Portland, Ore., a ninth-grader at Jesuit High School
  • Reshma Kosaraju from San Jose, Calif., an eighth-grader at Harker Middle School
  • Jaya Choudhary from Canton, Mich., an eighth-grader at Canton Charter Academy
  • Nishant Lahiri from Corning, N.Y., a ninth-grader at Corning-Painted Post High School
  • Faraz Tamboli from Plainsboro, N.J., a seventh-grader at Community Middle School
  • Yosef “Joey” Granillo from University City, Mo., a sixth-grader at PEGS-Program at Rose Acres Elementary

“Discovery Education is so proud to partner with 3M on the Young Scientist Challenge and the Young Scientist Lab program,” said Lori McFarling, president of corporate partnerships, Discovery Education.  “We are all inspired by the finalists’ passion for solving real-world problems and making the world a better place through their curiosity, innovation and commitment.”

For the first time in competition history, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge named a recipient of the inaugural Improving Lives Award. This year’s winner is Reshma Kosaraju, an eighth-grader from San Jose, Calif., who was selected through an online public voting period from October 14-25, 2019. Reshma was recognized for her innovative solution to prevent and predict instances of forest fires using machine learning and neural networks. As part of this recognition, Reshma will receive a one of a kind destination trip.

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student prizes, paired students with world-renowned scientists, and the 3M Young Scientist Lab program in partnership with Discovery Education has delivered much-needed science resources to millions of students, teachers, and families across the country. The challenge targets students during the years when research shows that their interest in science begins to wane, and instead encourages them to find creative ways to explore solving real-world problems using the scientific method. Winners have gone on to be featured in Forbes magazine’s annual “30 Under 30” list, speak in front of members of Congress and attendees at the United Nations, meet the President of the United States and demonstrate inventions on national television programs such as ABC World News Tonight, Fox & Friends, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Discovery Education & Corporate Program Partners Recognize Red Ribbon Week with New Resources to Aid in Substance Abuse Prevention

–Comprehensive Instructional Tools Focus on Prevention of Underage Drinking and Opioid and Prescription Medication Misuse–

Silver Spring, MD (October 24, 2019) — Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital curriculum resources, digital content, and professional development for K – 12 classrooms nationwide, continues to add to the portfolio of Corporate Education Partnership programs that provide students, families, and employees with cross-disciplinary, standards-aligned resources and fact-based evidence to support educating students about the dangers of substance misuse. Aligning with this year’s Red Ribbon Week theme of “Send a Message. Stay Drug Free,” these programs provide proactive strategies to help ensure the health, wellbeing, and safety of our students and communities nationwide.

Ask, Listen, Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don’t Mix, a program of Responsibility.org in partnership with Discovery Education offers no-cost, standards-aligned lessons and digital resources to teach students in grades 5-7 the science behind how alcohol affects their developing brains, bodies, and behavior. The program features a series of short videos, lesson plans, and parent resources to help kids say “YES” to a healthy lifestyle and “NO” to underage drinking. A new interactive digital exploration coming this fall will dive into the science of how alcohol impacts the developing brain and strategies to navigate peer pressure. Students will meet Alex, a 6th grade student, who is invited to attend a party where there is likely to be alcohol. Students will learn refusal strategies from the tactics she uses to make smart, healthy, and safe decisions to say “NO” to underage drinking.

Created in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Operation Prevention provides students in grades 3-12 with an in-depth look at the science behind addiction and the extremely harmful impact opioid misuse has on lives of those that become addicted. Three on-demand virtual trips takes students inside opioid addiction and communities coping with the epidemic, and newly updated classroom resources, a self-paced module and parent resources give students in-depth lessons that aid them in making well-informed choices. New workplace resources to be released in the Spring will focus on providing employers with tools to educate and support their employees with information on the opioid crisis, including how opioids affect the brain and body, how to seek treatment, where to find preventative resources, and how to interact with those who have been directly affected.

Dose of Knowledge, a Pharmacists Teach program created in partnership with CVS Health and Discovery Education, officially launches in January 2020 and will feature a suite of digital resources for pharmacists, educators, and students grades 9 – 12, including classroom activities, digital lesson bundles, and student-led digital interactives. The program is aligned to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and is focused on the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and empowering students with the facts about prescription and illicit drug misuse.

“It is more important than ever that we provide educators, parents and communities with instructional resources to support their efforts to deliver these vital lessons about the dangers of substance misuse,” said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Discovery Education. “Public health is of key concern to Discovery Education and our partners, and we look forward to continuing the work to ensure that students are prepared to make healthy choices that will benefit their long-term goals and future success.”

New Jersey’s Trenton Public Schools Launches New Partnership with Discovery Education Focused on Enhancing Social Studies Instruction

Rollout of Digital Social Studies Curriculum in District Middle Schools to Support the Growth of Students’ Critical Thinking and Citizenship Skills—

Silver Spring, Md. (October 23, 2019) – New Jersey’s Trenton Public Schools (TPS) today unveiled a new partnership with Discovery Education. Through this collaboration, Discovery Education will provide educators in district middle schools an innovative, digital social studies curriculum that supports the development of students’ critical thinking and citizenship skills. Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

Among the largest school systems in the State of New Jersey, TPS serves a diverse population of more than 11,000 students. With a mission to graduate all students with a vision for their future, a motivation for continuous learning, and the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their choice of college or career, district leaders sought innovative new approaches to teaching and learning.  After considering a number of options to enhance social studies instruction and develop students’ critical thinking and citizenship skills, TPS selected Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook for middle school teachers and students.

Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook pairs compelling core content with thought-provoking essential questions, primary source analysis, and project-based tasks to help all students experience the social studies.  Specifically developed for diverse student audiences and curated by experts for ease of access, Social Studies Techbook’s high-quality, multimodal content supports the improvement of academic vocabulary, breaks down barriers to learning, provides all students multiple ways to shine, and engages students in higher-level thinking. In addition, a variety of differentiation tools integrated at point of use help educators meet the unique needs of each student. Access to two Lexile levels of core content, authentic Spanish translation—and 180 additional languages through Google Translate—as well as strategies for teaching students with special needs and English learners assist educators in creating inclusive, immersive learning experiences.

“The Trenton Public Schools are incredibly excited to kick-off this new partnership with Discovery Education,” said Michael Hodnicki, Supervisor of Humanities for Secondary Education at Trenton Public Schools. “By providing our students an engaging digital curriculum that challenges and engages them in social studies, we are putting them in a position to grow the critical skills they will need for career and citizenship success.”

To help TPS educators integrate their new digital resources into classroom instruction in the coming school year, Discovery Education will provide teachers numerous professional learning opportunities. Through these interactive professional development opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

TPS educators will also receive support from the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“The team at Discovery Education is thrilled to begin this partnership with Trenton Public Schools,” said Kelly Hoce, Discovery Education’s Director of Education Partnerships. “The talented educators at Trenton Public Schools have created an exciting vision for social studies instruction across the district, and we are proud to be a part of their plans.”
