Washington State’s Highline Public Schools Using Discovery Education’ Social Studies Techbook to Support Standards Based Instruction

—Use of Digital Social Studies Curriculum in All District Middle Schools Will Also Support the New Washington State K-12 Social Studies Learning Standards—

Silver Spring, Md. (October 14, 2019)Highline Public Schools (HPS) opened its middle schools this fall using Discovery Education’s digital Social Studies Techbook to support standards based instruction. Through this new collaboration, Discovery Education is providing educators and students in seven Highline schools access to an innovative, digital social studies resource supportive of existing Common Core State Standards, the C3 Framework, and the new Washington State K-12 Social Studies Learning Standards. Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

Highline serves approximately 18,000 K-12 students in the communities of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac and White Center in northwest Washington State.  To support the district’s commitment to educational equity, high expectations for all, and partnering with families and the community to ensure that all children achieve their potential, Highline sought a unique social studies curriculum.  This new resource was required to support both existing and future social studies standards and seamlessly fit into the school system’s existing inquiry-focused framework.

Following a rigorous review, Highline selected Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook for integration into classroom instruction in the following schools:

  • Sylvester Middle School
  • Pacific Middle School
  • Highline Choice Academy
  • Glacier Middle School
  • Chinook Middle School
  • Cascade Middle School
  • Big Picture Middle School

The Social Studies Techbook pairs compelling core content with thought-provoking essential questions, primary source analysis, and project-based tasks to help all students experience the social studies.  Specifically developed for diverse student audiences and curated by experts for ease of access, Social Studies Techbook’s high-quality, multimodal content supports the improvement of academic vocabulary, breaks down barriers to learning, provides all students multiple ways to shine, and engages students in higher-level thinking. In addition, a variety of differentiation tools integrated at point of use help educators meet the unique needs of each student. Access to two Lexile levels of core content, authentic Spanish translation—and 180 additional languages through Google Translate—as well as strategies for teaching students with special needs and English learners assist educators in creating inclusive, immersive learning experiences.

“Highline Public Schools’ strategic plan stresses the delivery of a guaranteed and viable curriculum that prepares students for the future they choose. This curriculum must prepare students to ask complex questions, read and write with a critical lens, and know how and when to take action,” said Lexi Samorano, Highline Public Schools’ Secondary Social Studies Specialist.  “Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook offers materials with diverse and accurate perspectives, authentic learning through inquiry, and literacy skills driven by real world application that supports our goals. We look forward to seeing how this partnership will change student outcomes.”

To help HPS’s middle school educators integrate their digital textbooks into classroom instruction, Discovery Education is providing district teachers a number of professional learning opportunities. Through these interactive professional development opportunities, participants will learn best practices for integrating technology and digital content into teaching and learning in ways that will maximize the power of their new resources, increase student engagement in instruction, and improve students’ academic achievement.

HPS educators are also receiving support from the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is excited to partner with HPS to provide its high-quality digital Social Studies curriculum for all middle schools students,” said Nellie Herchenbach, Discovery Education Partnerships Manager. “The team’s focus on equity and their innovative vision for integrating technology and multimedia content into instruction and our high-quality digital resources will help move social studies teaching and learning forward in the Pacific Northwest.”

Silver Spring, MD (October 3, 2019)Michigan’s Saline Area Schools (SAS) today announced a new multiyear partnership with Discovery Education focused on helping district students build proficiency in the “4C” (Communication, Creativity and Innovation, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving) skills needed for post-graduate success.  Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

 – Nationwide Challenge to Award $30K for New Stanley Black & Decker ‘Making for Good Challenge’ –

Silver Spring, Md. (Wednesday, October 2, 2019) Stanley Black & Decker, the world’s largest tools and storage company and leader in engineered fastening and security, and Discovery Education, the leading provider of standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, today announced the Making for Good Challenge, a challenge encouraging students to develop a unique product that addresses societal and environmental needs.

An extension of Discovery Education and Stanley Black & Decker’s Innovation Generation: Making an Impact program, the Making for Good Challenge asks high school students to work in teams of two-to-four to design a product solution that will help solve an environmental or societal problem in their home, school or community. Student teams must develop a product design blueprint and submit a 60 – 90 second video discussing the problem, how their product can help solve it, and explain how they used the engineering design process – ask, imagine, plan, create, test and improve. Overall, the initiative aims to cultivate student collaboration and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) learning acceleration in learning communities nationwide.

Prizes for winning submissions, include:
Grand Prize Team: $15,000 and Stanley Black & Decker Virtual Mentorship
First Runner-Up Team: $10,000 and Stanley Black & Decker Prize Pack
Second Runner-Up Team: $5,000 and Stanley Black & Decker Prize Pack

“Stanley Black & Decker is committed to fostering a spirit of STEAM learning in building, making and doing in the next generation of innovators, and we are excited to partner with Discovery Education to advance the future of engineering design-based learning and education,” said Deb Geyer, Stanley Black & Decker corporate responsibility officer. “The ‘Innovation Generation: Making an Impact’ program aims to inspire students to develop the skills necessary to create the future and the ‘Making for Good Challenge’ provides them with the tools and access needed to successfully achieve that goal.”

Innovation Generation: Making an Impact complements Stanley Black & Decker’s existing maker-focused efforts – including Makerspace collaboration initiatives with universities and other organizations, global apprenticeship programs, sponsorship of WorldSkills International, and the company’s recent announcement of its Manufactory 4.0 initiative that includes job retraining efforts and the STANLEY+Techstars Additive Manufacturing Accelerator program.

“Discovery Education and Stanley Black & Decker, in launching the Making for Good Challenge, have one shared mission, vision and goal – to bridge the gap between classroom and real-world application for new generation of creators,” said Lori McFarling, Discovery Education senior vice president and chief marking officer. “We’re excited to showcase the program’s winning submissions, while continuing to encourage students to think outside the box.”

Powered by Stanley Black & Decker’s tools, with powerful brands such as DEWALT, CRAFTSMAN, STANLEY, IRWIN and BLACK+DECKER, together with Discovery Education’s unparalleled classroom reach, Innovation Generation: Making an Impact aims to drive student learning with a premiere, STEAM-focused, cross-disciplinary initiative that invites students and educators to explore their worlds through building, making and doing. Innovation Generation resources help students build the important critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills needed for success beyond the classroom, and the program’s no cost tools can be accessed online at innovation-gen.com.

Alongside Stanley Black & Decker experts, Innovation Generation will provide students with opportunities to learn about diverse STEAM careers in context – connecting them with examples of real-world applications. Exploring direct connections to vocational STEAM, young innovators will engage in Virtual Field Trips, maker activities and a national student challenge that represents the innovation continuum. This will ensure that students are exposed first-hand to how math, science, technology, creativity and teamwork can lead to technological advancements in our everyday lives.

“The ‘Innovation Generation’ partnership between Discovery Education and Stanley Black & Decker opens a world of innovation for our students and builds on the ideas of maker spaces in schools, and the ‘Making for Good Challenge’ takes students on an extraordinary journey through the process of exploring STEAM in action,” said Becky Goddard, Pine Lake Preparatory School instructional technology specialist, Mooresville, N.C. “As an educator, I’m always seeking ways to make learning exciting for my students and this initiative provides digitally immersive learning experiences that prepare them with rigorous STEAM competencies for careers of the future.”

Making for Good Challenge opens today and will close on January 30, 2020. Winners will be announced in Spring 2020. U.S. high school students can register and find more information about the challenge here.

The competition – the 2020 TeenDrive365 Video Challenge by Toyota and Discovery Education – invites students in grades 9-12 to submit an original 30-60 second Public Service Announcement (PSA) about distracted driving to encourage their peers to stay safe behind the wheel.

Now in its ninth year, the challenge’s grand prize includes $15,000 and the opportunity to work with a Discovery, Inc. film crew to re-shoot the entry video into a TV-ready PSA. Also, as a new program component, the video challenge will announce up to 50 state merit winners, the winning individual or team will receive a TeenDrive365 prize pack. Teens can register and submit their entries today through Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at TeenDrive365.com.

“The ‘TeenDrive365 Video Challenge’ combines student collaboration, critical thinking and the use of immersive digital resources to help students to express their deepest concerns about safe and responsible driving,” said Tom Clowes, assistant principal, Westminster High School, Westminster, Md., Carroll County Public Schools. “Through this partnership, Toyota and Discovery Education are empowering students, educators and communities to have critical conversations about the power of making safe choices behind the wheel.”

A panel of judges comprised of community leaders, educators, communications experts and Toyota representatives will convene in March 2020 to select challenge winners. Since the inception of the competition, thousands of video submissions have been considered, and the effort has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student prizes. The top ten finalists’ videos – some amusing and others more serious in tone – communicate the importance of maintaining safe driving habits and avoiding fatal distractions while behind the wheel.

Other prizes include:
Second place prize: $10,000
Third place prize: $7,500
Fourth to tenth place prizes: Each receives $2,500
Four regional prizes: Each receives $1,000
People’s Choice: $5,000
State Merit winners: Prize pack valued at approx. $300

The video challenge is part of TeenDrive365, an educational initiative that encourages teens to avoid distractions and stay safe behind the wheel. The TeenDrive365 offers a range of content, tools and resources designed specifically for educators, teens and parents at no cost.

“With the reduction of safe driving programs from the school day, Toyota’s efforts to empower teens to make the right choices behind the wheel are more important than ever,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Discovery Education. “When it comes the issue of safe driving, teens play a major role in influencing the behavior of their peers, and we are proud to collaborate with Toyota and educators nationwide, because we know that their work is literally saving lives.”

Wyoming Educators Obtain Computational Thinking Principles Through Ignite My Future in School

— Tata Consultancy Services Provides Local Albany County Educators Professional Development in Partnership with Discovery Education —

WYOMING| NEW YORK (Monday, September 23, 2019) Tata Consultancy Services, (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, and Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms, have launched Ignite My Future in School within the Albany County School District. This free professional training event will connect more than 100+ local educators with education experts to learn about Ignite My Future in School, understand its purpose and receive hands-on curriculum training.

Recent studies show Wyoming graduates less than 45 computer science majors each year and only seven percent were female. A recently as 2016, universities in Wyoming did not graduate a single new teacher prepared to teach computer science. However, earlier this year, the National Science Foundation awarded nearly $1 million to the University of Wyoming (UW) to support integration of computer science education in K-8 classrooms and public libraries across the state. This followed a 2018 state legislature mandate to teach computer science in Wyoming’s K-12 schools by 2022. To support the state’s ambitious goals, TCS is launching Ignite My Future in School to help close the teacher preparedness gap by building the capacity of educators to integrate computational thinking into everyday lessons.

“We are so excited to be able to take part in this learning with ‘Ignite My Future’,” said Dr. Jubal Yennie, Superintendent of Albany County School District #1. “It will be very impactful for our students and teachers. I’m personally looking forward to seeing the Family Night activities in action. What a fantastic opportunity for our students and families to connect with the school in a fun, engaging atmosphere.”

Ignite My Future in School offers educators curriculum support through free instructional resources with computational thinking strategies embedded into subjects such as math, sciences, arts, and social studies, housed on a digital platform and offers year-round engagement. This interdisciplinary approach enables students to obtain in-demand critical thinking skills for 21st century careers across all industries.

“In today’s digital economy, computational thinking is as foundational as reading, writing and math. We are excited to partner with the State of Wyoming, empowering educators and preparing students to be future ready,” said Balaji Ganapathy, Head of Workforce Effectiveness, TCS.

TCS is also working alongside Wyoming’s Department of Education to bring goIT, TCS’ flagship student-facing STEM education program, to the entire state of Wyoming. In the fall of 2018, goIT piloted its programming with over 300 students Clear Creek and Kaycee Middle Schools in Buffalo, WY. This year, TCS and the DOE plan to bring goIT to three to five new districts and will host a statewide goIT competition in the spring of 2020.

On a national level, Ignite My Future in School aims to engage 20,000 teachers and one million U.S. students by 2021. As a first step towards this goal, TCS and Discovery Education have already partnered with U.S. school districts in Washington, D.C., Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri and California to launch this initiative. Since debuting in 2017, IMFIS has provided a value of more than $13.5 million to the U.S. education system and has engaged nearly 550,000 students and over 9,000 educators from all 50 states.
