Public Voting Now Open for the 3M Young Scientist Challenge Improving Lives Award

3M and Discovery Education to Recognize Scientific Innovation with Strongest Potential to Positively Impact the World

St. Paul, Minn. and Charlotte, NC (Tuesday, October 4, 2022) 3M and Discovery Education today announced public voting is now open for the Improving Lives Award, a special recognition awarded as a part of the annual 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). From now through October 14, 2022, students, teachers, parents, and other members of the public can vote once per day here for the innovation from the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge they believe has the greatest potential to make a positive impact on the world.

“The 3M Young Scientist Challenge exemplifies the positive impact that future scientists are already having on the world,” said Karina Chavez, senior vice president and chief strategy officer at 3M. “3M remains committed to equity in education and we are thrilled to invite science fans and advocates everywhere to vote now and support our finalists as they build on their passion for science. We look forward to what these finalists can achieve and are excited to name the recipient of the 2022 Improving Lives Award.”

In June, the top ten finalists were named for the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge now in its fifteenth year as the nation’s premier science competition – recognizing outstanding innovations from young scientists in grades 5 – 8. Each finalist will receive $1,000 and the opportunity to work with a 3M scientist who will mentor them as they evolve their invention from idea to prototype.

The winners of both the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge and the Improving Lives Award will be revealed during an awards banquet at 3M’s Global Headquarters in St. Paul, Minn. on October 18, 2022. The public is invited to watch the final event live on social media here.

The 2022 Improving Lives Award winner will receive a unique destination trip, and the grand prize winner of the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge will receive $25,000, a unique destination trip, and the prestigious title of America’s Top Young Scientist. In 2021, by public vote, 14-year-old Samarth Mahapatra from Marietta, Ga. was named the recipient of the Improving Lives Award. Inspired by his great aunt who had to give up her love for cooking due to glaucoma-induced blindness, Samarth’s project, “Accessibility Friendly Guidance System for Optimal Cooking Operations based on Machine Learning,” deployed edge computing and advanced vision algorithms to help those with vision impairments cook with ease.

“The finalists in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge demonstrate how students are already changing the world for the better and finding real-world solutions through STEM,” said Amy Nakamoto, general manager of Social Impact at Discovery Education. “At Discovery Education, we help students discover their inner curiosity about the world and the 3M Young Scientist Challenge is a tremendous example of how students bring science to life. We encourage the public to explore the incredible work of the 2022 finalists and Improving Lives Award contenders.”

The award-winning 3M Young Scientist Challenge supplements the 3M and Discovery Education program – Young Scientist Lab – which provides no-cost dynamic digital resources for students, teachers, and families to explore, transform, and innovate the world around them. All the resources are also available through the Young Scientist Lab Channel and in the Social Impact Partnerships channel on Discovery Education’s  K-12 learning platform.

The Glad Products Company and Discovery Education Partner to Support Science Education for 100,000 First Grade Students Across United States Amid Supply Chain Shortages

Charlotte, NC (Wednesday, September 28, 2022)— The Glad Products Company partnered with Discovery Education — the worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place — to support science education for over 100,000 first grade students across the United States. Through this collaboration, The Glad Products Company donated its popular Press’n Seal® product to more than 3,000 educators nationwide, empowering them to bring the hands-on components of Discovery Education’s Mystery Science resources alive for tens of thousands of students nationwide.

Mystery Science, which joined the family of Discovery Education services in 2020, provides K-5 educators simple to use, open-and-go, hands-on lessons that inspire students to love science. Each lesson begins by posing a question commonly asked by young students, followed by a series of brief videos and prompts to guide class discussion. The lesson concludes with a hands-on activity designed to bring learning to life.

As educators often face the challenge of having the proper materials to effectively teach science lessons, Discovery Education offers educators using Mystery Science “Mystery Packs,” a set of curated supplies containing the resources needed to support students’ hands-on learning. Due to global supply chain complications, Mystery Science was not able to source all the materials for the Mystery Packs designed to accompany 1st grade science lessons, including the popular Glad Press’n Seal® product. When The Glad Products Company representatives became aware of the situation, they immediately leapt in to support students by directly donating the needed Press’n Seal® product to more than 3,000 teachers across the country so students could learn about light by making stained glass flowers.

“When we learned that Discovery Education couldn’t secure enough Press’n Seal® for the Mystery Science Packs through their normal channels we were happy to step in and help. As a company committed to purpose-driven growth, we know that investing in students today contributes to a better world tomorrow,” said Chris Nielsen, Associate Director, Brand Management at The Glad Products Company.

“Seeing the delight of students as they solve a science problem lights up the world. The goal of Mystery Science and Discovery Education is to help as many educators as possible nurture students’ natural curiosity. With the outstanding support of The Glad Products Company, we were able to maximize our impact together,” said Discovery Education’s General Manager of Social Impact, Amy Nakamoto. “Thank you to The Glad Products Company for stepping up to support educators work to inspire STEM learning through Mystery Science.”

Genentech and Partners Launch New Open-source Curriculum to Bring Biotechnology Education to Millions of High School Students

Futurelab+ is a $10 Million Expansion of Genentech’s Original South San Francisco Futurelab Program

This press release was originally distributed by Genentech. You can find the original version here.

South San Francisco, CA – September 26, 2022 – Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, today announced the launch of Futurelab+, a $10 million national expansion of the South San Francisco-based Futurelab program, a science education partnership with the South San Francisco Unified School District that has introduced more than 8,000 K-12 students annually to biotechnology concepts and careers since 2015.

Through Futurelab+, science educators can now introduce biotechnology skills and experiences that deepen students’ understanding of the full product life cycle, empower them with information about health disparities and how to address them, and help them prepare for the wide range of rewarding career opportunities available to them in science and medicine.

By 2026, Futurelab+ aims to reach two million more high school students across the Bay Area, California and beyond – many from Title I schools[1] and schools that serve communities that have been historically underrepresented and excluded from STEM careers.

Futurelab+ is comprised of three core elements:

1. The Futurelab+ Curriculum: The centerpiece of Futurelab+ is a new, free, open-source biotechnology curriculum written by and for teachers. Combining the latest scientific concepts from molecule to medicine with lessons that address health equity and inclusive clinical research, the modular and flexible curriculum equips teachers with hands-on labs, interactive resources and career exploration tools to engage all learners, with an intentional focus on the needs of historically excluded students. It also aligns to California Career Technical Education (CTE) Model Curriculum Standards for Biotechnology and incorporates Next Generation Science Standards.

2. The Futurelab+ Teacher Incubator & Educator Community: Futurelab+ centers and supports high school science educators. The Teacher Incubator prioritizes those teaching in Title I schools, providing them with lab equipment, targeted professional development, stipends and opportunities to connect with industry professionals. The Educator Community, launching in Spring 2023, connects all teachers who are using the curriculum and equips them to engage students from a range of racial, ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

3. The Futurelab+ Employee Volunteer Network: To expose learners to real-world applications of the Futurelab+ curriculum, the program connects Incubator teachers and students with biotechnology professionals – including Genentech employees – who visit classrooms virtually to help young people understand the full breadth of career paths and opportunities available in biotechnology.

“At Genentech, we know firsthand the promise and power that biotechnology holds to help people and create a better world,” said Ragnar von Schiber, principal, Corporate Citizenship & Engagement and head of K-12 STEM education initiatives, Genentech. “We heard from teachers that they needed more than just lab-heavy lesson plans that rely on expensive equipment. With Futurelab+, we set out to create project-based, cutting-edge tools that make biotechnology real, hands-on and relevant to students of all backgrounds – without a huge cost to schools.”

Futurelab+ was developed as a collaboration with Discovery Education and was further supported by a network of partners including BABEC (Bay Area Bioscience Education Community), Jobs for the Future (JFF), Ignited, The American Institutes for Research (AIR) and California Academy of Sciences.

“Immersing students in hands-on science and authentic career learning helps nurture a collaborative, creative and compassionate future workforce,” said Amy Nakamoto, general manager of Social Impact, Discovery Education. “We are honored and excited to partner with Genentech and our other collaborators to provide high school students and educators with innovative and flexible digital resources designed to inspire engagement in STEM from anywhere.”

Discovery Education, the American Heart Association, and the National Football League Engage Students in Fitness and Education Leading Up to Super Bowl LVII

Charlotte, NC. (Thursday, September 22, 2022) — The American Heart Association and the National Football League (NFL) and its 32 teams, in collaboration with Discovery Education, challenge kids to get moving with NFL PLAY 60’s Race to Super Bowl LVII Fitness Tracking Competition. From Sept. 26- Oct. 26, Race to the Super Bowl invites classrooms and afterschool programs to log minutes of physical activity each day through the NFL PLAY 60 app’s “Group Quickplay” feature.

The free app, available for iOS and Android, allows users to control personalized avatars onscreen with their own physical movement. As the group completes workouts through the app’s “Group Quickplay” feature, those physical activity minutes will be logged toward the group’s overall total. Students can complete workouts individually at home and have those minutes roll up as well. Groups and students can see where they rank in the standings by viewing a fun leaderboard feature, encouraging healthy competition. The class or afterschool program that logs the most minutes during the competition will receive a grant for $1,000. Each NFL market will have one winning recipient, for a total of 32 grants given. The leading school or afterschool program out of the 32 recipients will be awarded an additional grant of $1,000. Registration to participate via the app opens on Sept. 26.

“The American Heart Association recommends kids be active 60 minutes a day to support mental and physical health. This can also improve their behavior in the classroom,” said Michelle A. Albert, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, volunteer president of the American Heart Association.

In addition to the Fitness Tracking Competition, NFL PLAY 60 offers many ways to support physical activity habits by meeting kids where they are. For the 2022-2023 school year, the NFL and American Heart Association are hosting two upcoming free, fifteen-minute Fitness Break broadcasts. The series helps students understand the connection between physical activity and long-term health and provides opportunities to move with exercise segments. Students and educators can take fitness learning further with ready-to-use lesson plans aligned to learning standards created by Discovery Education’s curriculum experts designed to fit into any classroom or learning environment. Registration is currently open for the Super Bowl LVII broadcast on February 9 and the NFL Draft broadcast on April 26.

“We’re excited to continue working to promote healthy lifestyles to students across the country with our partners at the American Heart Association in collaboration with Discovery Education,” said Megan Mendoza, NFL Manager of Community Relations. “The NFL PLAY 60’s Race to Super Bowl LVII Fitness Tracking Competition’s goal is to encourage parents, teachers and students to be more active. We’re excited to see the healthy impact this program will make for every participant.”

Lastly, educators can access the on-demand exercises from all 32 teams through the NFL PLAY 60 library, a digital playlist helping students reach the recommended 60-minutes of daily physical activity. Those resources can be found online at heart.org/NFLPLAY60.

“Student’s health is a key factor in their success, in and out of the classroom,” said Amy Nakamoto, General Manager at Discovery Education. “We proud of our continued collaboration with the National Football League and the American Heart Association to inspire young people everywhere to get moving.”

Educators and Students Across the Diocese of Brooklyn Start the School Year with Dynamic New Digital Resources from the Catholic Telemedia Network and Discovery Education

Charlotte, NC (Wednesday, September 21, 2022)—The Catholic Telemedia Network (CTN) and Discovery Education —the worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place—are teaming up to send teachers and students in schools across the Diocese of Brooklyn back to the classroom with award-winning digital resources. These new resources connect the Diocese’s schools and academies to the world outside the classroom, supporting the delivery of a comprehensive academic education that will help students reach their full human potential and contribute to the common good of our nation and the world.

CTN has been serving the educational and spiritual needs of the children in the diocesan schools and academies of Brooklyn and Queens since 1966. CTN’s initiatives fall into three main categories. First, to provide digital content for Catholic school classrooms in Brooklyn and Queens. Second, to offer professional development for teachers and instructional coaches. Third, to bring technology in the form of personal computing devices/tablets, LTE broadband connectivity, and network infrastructure to schools. In addition, CTN services assist teachers in meeting national technology standards established by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Next Generation Standards, enabling students to collaborate with the world around them.

Through this partnership, which is underwritten in part by the generosity of Stanley Black & Decker, 68 diocesan schools will receive access to Discovery Education’s K-12 learning platform.

Connecting educators to a vast collection of high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, intuitive quiz and activity creation tools, and professional learning resources, Discovery Education provides educators an enhanced learning platform which facilitates engaging, daily instruction in any learning environment.

Discovery Education’s team continues adding, contextualizing, and organizing exciting new content, and timely and relevant resources to the platform each month in response to current events and the ever-evolving needs of educators. These resources, sourced from trusted partners, are aligned to state and national standards, and help educators  bring the outside world into teaching and learning every day.

The K-12 learning platform is designed to work within the school systems’ existing infrastructure and workflows, and provides safe, secure, simple access methods for educators and students. Through expanded, lasting partnerships with Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Schoology, Canvas, Brightspace, and Clever, integrating Discovery Education’s K-12 learning platform into existing IT architecture is easier than ever.

“Discovery Education’s resources are unparalleled, and CTN is excited to have this opportunity to support the educators and students of the Diocese of Brooklyn’s schools and academies,” said Gina Krainchich, Director of CTN. “We look forward to seeing the creative ways educators across Brooklyn and Queens will use these digital resources to develop challenging lessons that reflect the New York State Learning Standards in a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment while preparing students for high school and beyond.”

“The Diocese of Brooklyn is at the forefront of creating dynamic digital learning environments supportive of a Catholic education,” said Shayla Rexrode, M.Ed Director of Partner Success at Discovery Education. “We are excited to partner with CTN and the innovative and dedicated team using these services across this school system.”

“These exciting new digital tools from CTN and Discovery Education support the Diocese of Brooklyn’s effort to challenge students to grow through digital learning experiences that thoughtfully integrate technology into instruction,” said Joseph Paniccia, Principal of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Academy. “These resources will play a critical role in growing each child’s love of learning and deepening their opportunities to see our Catholic faith in action within our local school communities.”

Diocese of Brooklyn educators using Discovery Education’s services also enjoy access to the Discovery Education Community.
