America’s Top Young Scientist of 2020: 14-Year-Old Researches Spike Protein of SARS-CoV-2 Virus to Develop Novel Antiviral Drug to Combat Spread of COVID-19

Anika Chebrolu Takes Home Top Prize and Improving Lives Award at This Year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge

ST. PAUL, Minn. and SILVER SPRING, Md. (Wednesday, October 14, 2020) – 3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) have named 14-year-old Anika Chebrolu from Frisco, Tex. the winner of the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist), the nation’s premier middle school science competition. Anika used in-silico methodology for drug discovery to find a molecule that can selectively bind to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to find a cure for COVID-19.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is the cause of hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide and was declared a worldwide pandemic and public health emergency earlier this year. With the virus continuing to spread far and wide, there is an urgent need to find an effective anti-coronavirus drug. In her study, Anika discovered a molecule that can selectively bind to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2. Binding and inhibiting this viral protein would potentially stop the virus entry into the cell, creating a viable drug target. In her research, Anika screened millions of small molecules for drug-likeness properties, ADMET properties, and binding affinities against the spike protein using numerous software tools. The one molecule with the best pharmacological and biological activity towards the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was chosen as the lead molecule that can be a potential drug for the effective treatment of COVID-19.

For the first time in the history of the competition, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge showcased the top ten finalist projects and announced this year’s winner in a virtual event, held October 12-13, 2020. Anika, an eighth-grader at Nelson Middle School in Frisco Tex., at the time of entry, competed against nine other finalists in an interactive virtual competition. Each finalist was evaluated on a series of challenges and the presentation of their completed innovation. These young inventors – aged 12-14 – won the top ten spots in this year’s challenge through their innovative thinking, scientific acumen, and display of exceptional communication skills.

“Amidst the challenges of a global pandemic, quality STEM education for all has become an even more urgent need, and 3M’s commitment to fostering the next generation of science leaders has never been more determined,” said Denise Rutherford, senior vice president of Corporate Affairs at 3M. “In spite of challenges, like adjusting to new norms of distance learning and participating in virtual events, this year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists have smashed through barriers with grit, creativity, innovative thinking, and excitement – all in the name of applying science to improve lives. 3M is inspired by these young innovators and we celebrate each one of them. Our heartfelt congratulations go to this year’s winner, Anika Chebrolu, and our many thanks to all our 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists.”

Over the past few months, each 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalist worked with a 3M scientist who played the role of mentor and worked one-on-one with each finalist to transform their idea from concept to physical prototype. Anika was paired with Dr. Mahfuza Ali, a 3M corporate scientist in the materials resource division and a recent Carlton Society inductee.

As part of the program, challenge finalists received a variety of prizes from 3M and Discovery Education. The grand prize winner received a $25,000 cash prize, the prestigious title of “America’s Top Young Scientist,” and a special destination trip. The second and third place winners each received a $1,000 prize and a special destination trip. This year’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge winner, two runners up, and their mentors will also have the exciting opportunity to ring the New York Stock Exchange Closing Bell in a virtual event on October 15 at 4:00 p.m. EST. These exceptional middle-school-aged students at the time of entry are:

  • In second place, Kyle Tianshi, an eighth-grader at The Cambridge School from San Diego, Calif. Kyle designed a portable Total Suspended Solids (TSS) device that detects invisible particles in water to monitor water quality and contamination levels.
  • In third place, Laasya Acharya, a seventh-grader at Mason Middle School in Mason City School District from Mason, Ohio. Laasya utilized a neural network to detect crop diseases through image analysis.

The fourth through tenth place winners each receive a $1,000 prize and a $500 excitations gift card. These middle-school aged finalists at the time of entry, in alphabetical order by last name, are:

  • Xavier Baquero-Iglesias from Naples, Fla., a fifth-grader at Community School-Naples in the Collier County School District.
  • Rithvik Ijju from Englewood, Colo., an eighth-grader at Challenge School in the Cherry Creek School District 5.
  • Ekansh Mittal from Beaverton, Ore., an eighth-grader at Meadow Park Middle School in the Beaverton School District.
  • Harsha Pillarisetti from San Ramon, Calif., an eighth-grader at Windemere Ranch Middle School in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.
  • Samhita Pokkunuri from Old Bridge, N.J., a seventh-grader at Carl Sandburg Middle School in the Old Bridge Township Public School District.
  • Samvrit Rao from Ashburn, Va., a seventh-grader at Stone Hill Middle School in the Loudoun County Public School District.
  • Sophia Weiner from Rockledge, Fla., an eighth-grader at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.

For the second time in competition history, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge has named a recipient of the Improving Lives Award; the competition’s public voting process recognizes one project from the top ten that has the potential to change the most lives. Anika Chebrolu, this year’s 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge winner, was also selected as the recipient of the competition’s Improving Lives Award. Anika was selected through an online public vote from September 28 – October 9, 2020.

“For over a decade, Discovery Education and 3M have shared a commitment to empowering young people to bring the power of STEM learning to life,” said Lori McFarling, president of Corporate & Community Partnerships at Discovery Education. “All of this year’s participants demonstrated their deep engagement in these critical disciplines, and we are so pleased to have supported the 2020 participants in their endeavors.”

In its 13th year, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge continues to inspire and challenge middle school students to think creatively and apply the power of STEM to discovering real-world solutions. Winners have gone on to give TED Talks, file patents, found nonprofits, make the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange, and exhibit at the White House Science Fair. These young innovators have also been featured in The New York Times Magazine, Forbes, Business Insider, and on national television programs such as Good Morning America and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The award-winning 3M Young Scientist Challenge supplements the 3M and Discovery Education program – Young Scientist Lab – which provides no-cost dynamic digital resources for students, teachers, and families to explore, transform, and innovate the world around them. All resources are also available through the 3M Channel and Corporate Education Partnerships Channel on Discovery Education Experience, the digital service whose high-quality resources and instructional supports for educators are enriching student learning and extending it to the real world.

For the full calendar of events, visit the Keeping You Connected to Curiosity homepage here.

Keeping You Connected to Curiosity is the right initiative at the right time,” said Janel Bedor Griffiths, a Library Media Specialist in Wisconsin’s Green Bay Area Public Schools.  “Both teachers and students have a lot on their minds right now, so it’s understandable that they might sometimes forget the joy of exploring the world around them. Through this exciting new initiative, Discovery Education has put into my hands the resources I need to wake the natural curiosity in all my students. I’m looking forward to integrating these resources into my instruction.”

Educators using Discovery Education’s services enjoy access to the Discovery Education Community. A new digital programme to deliver high quality professional and personal development to thousands of teachers and school leaders across the UK was launched today by Discovery Educationthe leader in curriculum-aligned digital resources, engaging content, and professional learning for classrooms worldwide–and school leaders’ union NAHT.

Designed to support ‘the whole teacher’, Pathway is a holistic programme focused on improving teachers’ professional and personal wellbeing. By blending professional development with personal development, and combining Discovery Education and NAHT’s expertise and reach, Pathway offers a unique approach to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) that empowers teachers and school leaders to flourish during these challenging times.

Featuring powerful insights and perspectives from the UK’s leading education experts, Pathway supports teachers at every stage of their career through a wide range of easy-to-access courses, webinars, resources and tools.  With Pathway’s unique materials,  teachers can identify what motivates them, analyse their professional skills, gain meaningful professional advice and manage their own wellbeing. Together, these resources  can support the creation of a culture of professional learning and personal and career development in any school.

Delivered digitally and available to teachers at any time and pace, Pathway provides educators access to the training, advice and support they need to meet the challenges of the modern classroom. Pathway also includes a unique wellbeing programme written and presented by Professor Tim O’Brien and Dr Dennis Guiney and a new Advice Hub powered by NAHT experts, which helps schools keep abreast of the latest education policies and guidelines.

Paul Whiteman, NAHT general secretary, said:

“The Pathway message is simple: In order to properly invest in the development of their teams, school leaders must first invest in themselves.  As we say, if effective education considers the whole child, then effective CPD should be about the whole teacher.”

Howard Lewis, UK Managing Director, Discovery Education said:

“We believe that teachers’ wellbeing, motivation and creative ambitions deserve as much consideration as their professional skills. If teaching requires body and mind, heart and soul, then good CPD should support the whole teacher. We’re delighted to partner with NAHT to deliver a programme which achieves this. Pathway will help teachers and leaders to stay motivated, develop their skills and retain agency – even during these exceptionally challenging times.”

The Pathway programme is structured around three core elements, which together form a virtuous cycle of continuous empowerment throughout an educator’s professional journey. Orientation is where educators can explore what motivates them, audit their skills and competences and plot future goals and aspirations. In Navigation, participants can learn from fellow educators, school leaders and education experts through a suite of continuous professional empowerment courses and modules – comprising films, thought-pieces and reflections – and online discussion forums. Finally, in Reflection teachers are encouraged to self-focus with an exclusive Wellbeing Programme, an Advice Hub and a Professional Learning Portfolio to keep a record of personal and professional achievements.

Pathway’s contributors include some of the UK’s leading education experts and include Lead Author and Series Editor Andrew Hammond, Hywel Roberts, Debra Kidd, Professor Tim O’Brien, Pranav Patel and Professor Max Coates.

STEM Careers Coalition to Celebrate Manufacturing Day October 2nd

SILVER SPRING, MD (Thursday, October 1, 2020) – Members of the STEM Careers Coalition – the first-of-its-kind national STEM initiative powered by corporate leaders and anchored in schools by Discovery Education – are helping educators nationwide imbue today’s students with spirit of innovation during Manufacturing (MFG) Day. Observed on October 2, 2020, MFG Day reveals the reality of modern manufacturing careers by encouraging thousands of companies and educational institutions around the nation to open their doors to students, families, teachers, and community leaders. Discovery Education is the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources and professional learning for K-12 classrooms.

This year, MFG Day emphasizes engaging digital content and virtual events throughout the country. With manufacturing careers at the heart of some of the most impactful work being done in response to the pandemic, manufacturers are excited to share with students nationwide how they can prepare for the future of STEM work.

Supported by Discovery Education, the STEM Careers Coalition unites the business community in meeting a shared goal of accelerating the growth of the STEM pipeline and preparing 10 million students for the future of work. By providing access to dynamic digital content and real-world experiences that engage students in STEM careers, Coalition members connect students nationwide to the resources they need to develop the 21st Century skills critical for college and career success.

To support educators as they explore modern manufacturing with their students, members of the STEM Careers Coalition are offering teachers and students across the United States access to exciting no-cost resources:

COVID-19 Solution Seekers Video Series
Spotlighting how non-profits, corporations, and industries pivoted to meet the challenges of COVID-19, this video series connects the dots between the application of STEM skills, innovating solutions, and important real-world challenges. Through an array of real-world content featuring diverse STEM professionals, educators and students alike can discover the flexibility and possibility of STEM. Find out how industry leaders like Boeing, content contributor GAF, Microsoft, and American Petroleum Institute innovate and problem-solve through STEM.

Classroom Activities
These no-cost and standards-aligned activities designed for wherever learning takes place ignite student curiosity in STEM and explore opportunities with thought provoking problem-solving applied to real-world challenges. Each activity features important STEM skills and a step-by-step guide for implementing activities with students. Take high school students through the interesting textile industry with the all new “Eco-Friendly Manufacturing” activity challenging students to examine environmental impacts through self-directed research and critical assessment of pollution-reducing initiatives.

Manufacturing-Focused Career Videos
Learn from STEM Careers Coalition contributing partner GAF how manufacturing impacts everyday life and the many STEM pathways available. In these two new videos created for Manufacturing Day, various STEM leaders from GAF outline how they do their work to address society’s need and explain how today’s students can also build a future in manufacturing.

“Classroom lessons that discuss and explore modern manufacturing practices support learning in two important ways,” said Dana Johnston, Instructional Specialist in the Orange Unified School District. “They can help show students how the science and STEM lessons they are learning in the classroom can be applied to the real-world, and they can also help students learn about possible career paths they may wish to pursue. The valuable resources from the STEM Careers Coalition will be helpful to any educator helping to prepare their students for the world beyond the classroom.”

With a focus on equity of access, the Coalition connects industry leaders to support the development of innovative problem-solvers ready to join the STEM workforce of tomorrow. In addition to the Coalition’s national work, members also engage in regional approaches to workforce development and support students’ explorations in STEM by underwriting critical academic and career content available through the award-winning Discovery Education Experience and STEM Connect services.

“Manufacturing Day offers educators and students nationwide the perfect opportunity to explore not only how science and STEM relate to modern manufacturing, but the diverse careers available to students today,” said Marla Wilson, Executive Director of the STEM Careers Coalition. “We are grateful to our partners in the business community for their efforts to share with all learners these engaging digital resources highlighting both manufacturing’s connection to science and STEM and the possibilities open to today’s students in tomorrow’s manufacturing careers.”

Used in school systems nationwide, Experience is a flexible K-12 learning platform that connects educators to a vast collection of compelling high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, and professional learning resources. Together, these resources give educators everything they need to facilitate instruction in any learning environment and create lasting educational impact.

Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund Partners with Discovery Education to Deliver High-Quality Online Learning to Thousands of Refugees and Vulnerable Youth in Lebanon

This press release was originally distributed by the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education You can find the foundation’s online version here

DUBAI, UAE–29 September, 2020:  The Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund (REF) has announced a new first of its kind partnership with Discovery Education to deliver award winning online learning, increasing access to education for thousands of refugees and vulnerable youth in Lebanon.

The Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Covid-19 Online Learning Emergency Fund for Refugee Education, was launched by H.E. Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair in April 2020 to ensure vulnerable populations are able to continue their learning without interruption. This partnership with Discovery Education will help fill the educational gaps that have emerged because of the COVID -19 crisis. This program will reach 5,000 at-risk students in addition to over 17,500 students already being helped by REF in Jordan, Lebanon, and the UAE.

As part of the partnership with the Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund, and for the first time ever, Discovery Education will collaborate with local organizations in Lebanon to provide access to high-quality digital learning resources aligned to the Lebanese curriculum for students in Grade 8 – 12. This partnership is a component of the Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund’s effort to help 5,000 refugees and marginalized youth communities transition to Grades 9 and 12 and give them a chance to succeed when sitting the critical Lebanese national examinations.

Discovery Education will also provide Professional Learning to 100 teachers to address the challenges of remote instruction, enabling them to access a diverse set of new digital tools to help them deliver online lessons to students effectively. Through a series of online workshops, including but not limited to remote classroom management, effective teaching strategies for enhancing learning with digital resources will be offered. Participating teachers will also become part of Discovery Educator Network, an online community of practice comprised of educators from all over the globe.

The Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Covid-19 Online Learning Emergency Fund for Refugee Education will also provide students access to devices and internet connections to ensure their Discovery Education experience is not obstructed by any technical difficulty or lack of equipment.

As students in Lebanon continue to face multi-faceted challenges with an unprecedented high risk of dropping out of school, this first of its kind partnership between Discovery Education and The Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund comes in a timely manner.

The increase in dropouts from secondary education amongst refugees is alarming, whereby less than 2% of Syrian refugees complete their secondary education. This program will help students catch up on the education they have missed – on and off since October 2019 – through interactive and creative online tools and pedagogies.

H.E Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, Chairman of Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education and founder of the Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair Refugee Education Fund said: “The economic crisis followed by the pandemic and the devastating blast in Beirut has forced Lebanon to adapt to a new challenging reality. We are proud of this partnership with Discovery Education as digital education is the new go to solution for education, this program ensures refugees and vulnerable youth have effective access to high quality education that they would not have otherwise.”

Robin Headlee, managing director of Discovery Education International said:  “Refugees and vulnerable youth in Lebanon have faced unprecedented challenges over the last year, which have posed several risks to their access to education. We strongly believe that no child or young person’s education should be halted due to external factors which are beyond their control. That’s why we are doing our part to ensure these young people have the opportunity to continue their education online, in order for them to catch-up on their development and not be held back in the future. I am delighted that what started out as a kernel of an idea by two like-minded organizations has resulted in this practical, proactive and tangible project.”

The fund awards grants through a competitive selection process to education institutions and non-governmental organizations working with refugee and conflict affected children and youth. To date, the Fund is supporting 10 organizations who are collectively reaching over 17,000 refugee and vulnerable youth. Programs are based on emerging needs and focus on secondary and vocational educational streams.

The Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, launched in 2015, supports the provision of high-quality education opportunities for Emirati and Arab youth across the Arab region.
