Suffolk City Public Schools Launches New Partnership with Discovery Education to Deepen Student Learning Through Real-World Connections

SILVER SPRING, MD (Thursday, October 21, 2021)Suffolk City Public Schools (SPS) has launched a new partnership with Discovery Education supporting the district’s efforts to deepen student learning through real-world connections. Through this new collaboration, educators districtwide are now using a suite of Discovery Education’s award-winning digital services to design and deliver engaging lessons. Educators are embedding the 5 Cs (critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration & citizenship) and expanding high-demand course offerings to prepare students for college and career. Discovery Education is the worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place.

Located in the heart of Virginia’s Hampton Roads metropolitan area, SPS’ team of 2,300 professionals serves a diverse and dynamic student population of over 14,000 students. Guided by their strategic plan—Building Exceptional Schools—and supported by the district’s 1:1 initiative, the school system equips students to become lifelong learners while partnering with the community to provide outstanding educational experiences to all they serve.

To support the district’s efforts to embed the 5Cs more firmly into instruction and deepen student learning through real-world connections and cross-curricular content integration, SPS administrators sought a high-quality, flexible digital solution that would support the learning of all students. Following a review of potential solutions, SPS selected the Virginia Discovery Education Science Experience for use districtwide. Virginia Discovery Education Science Experience includes:

The Discovery Education platform.
Discovery Education connects educators to a vast collection of high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, intuitive quiz and activity creation tools, and professional learning resources. The program provides educators with a recently enhanced learning platform that facilitates engaging, daily instruction in any learning environment.

Discovery Education’s team continues adding, contextualizing, and organizing exciting new content and timely and relevant resources to the platform each month in response to current events and the ever-evolving needs of educators. These resources, sourced from trusted partners, are aligned to state and national standards and help educators bring the outside world into teaching and learning every day.

The K-12 learning platform is designed to work within the school systems’ existing infrastructure and workflows and provides safe, secure, simple access methods for educators and students. Through expanded, lasting partnerships with Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Schoology, Canvas, Brightspace, and Clever, integrating Discovery Education’s K-12 learning platform into existing IT architecture is easier than ever.

Discovery Education Science Techbooks.
The Discovery Education Science Techbook series—which is currently used in classrooms across the United States and Canada—is a comprehensive, research-backed science solution for grades K-12. Delivered through Discovery Education’s K-12 platform, the Science Techbook series drives engagement with exclusive phenomena and interactive content. Virtual and hands-on investigations, STEM activities, and various instructional supports enhance the delivery of impactful, blended instruction in person or at a distance. Digital teacher editions also provide flexible pacing options, embedded teacher notes, and Pathways for Learning to address diverse learners.

The Virginia edition of the Discovery Education Science Textbook was approved for statewide use by the Virginia State Board of Education in September of 2020 and is also used by Virginia’s Chesapeake Public Schools and the Portsmouth Public Schools.

“The introduction of Discovery Education’s digital services into district classrooms helps SPS teachers provide students new learning opportunities. It connects the instruction going on inside the classroom to the world in which they live,” said Dr. John B. Gordon, III, Suffolk Public Schools Superintendent. “We are incredibly excited to have these resources now available throughout the district.”

Discovery Education will provide SPS educators with dedicated professional learning to help the school system recognize the full return on their edtech investment. Through these interactive professional development sessions, participants will learn best practices for integrating their new digital resources into instruction. Effective professional development will maximize the power of these resources, increase student engagement in learning, and support students’ continued academic development.

The district’s partnership with Discovery Education also provides all district teachers access to the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and worldwide through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.

“Discovery Education is proud to partner with Suffolk Public Schools on their effort to produce life-long learners equipped with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to succeed as productive citizens in a local, national, and global society,” said Kelly Hoce, Discovery Education’s Senior Director of Education Partnerships. “This collaboration is off to a great start, and we look forward to continuing to work side-by-side to prepare every student to find success in our complex society.”

(Wednesday, October 20, 2021) 3M (@3M) and Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) have named 14-year-old Sarah Park from Jacksonville, Fla. the winner of the 2021 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist), the nation’s premier middle school science competition. Sarah created Spark Care+, an innovation that personalizes music therapy treatment for mental health improvement using artificial intelligence (AI), skin response (GSR) and photoplethysmography (PPG). As the 3M Young Scientist Challenge grand prize winner, Sarah received a $25,000 cash prize, the prestigious title of “America’s Top Young Scientist,” and a special destination trip.

“The 3M Young Scientist Challenge aligns with 3M’s commitment to fostering the next generation of science leaders, and exemplifies how a quality STEM education can get young people interested and excited about science as a way to improve lives all around the world,” said Dr. Denise Rutherford, senior vice president and chief corporate affairs officer at 3M. “Against the backdrop of an ongoing global pandemic, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists have each shown how grit, determination, resiliency, innovative thinking, and the scientific process come together to create truly incredible innovations with the potential to address major global challenges. 3M is inspired by these young inventors, and we celebrate their accomplishments. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Sarah Park, and to all our 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists. We thank you for inspiring us through your efforts.”

The global pandemic has had a profound impact on mental health – negatively affecting millions of people and creating new barriers for people already suffering from mental health disorders. For her project, Sarah developed SparkCare+ as an efficient, affordable, portable, and personalized music therapy for mental health improvement. SparkCare+ is made up of two components: a communication with the participant, and a mechanism that uses deep neural networks to select therapeutic music.

The communication component of SparkCare+ asks the participant questions and elaborates on the Hamilton Anxiety and Depression rating scales, providing insight for the AI. Sarah used Arduino (an open-source electronic prototyping platform) so a PPG sensor could gauge indicators regarding the participant’s mental state, including their heart rate and blood pressure. The GSR sensor is an additional tool Sarah developed to indicate mental state, and to provide the AI the necessary information to pick suitable music for the participant and sense progress. Sarah envisions developing personalized wristbands for all interests and ages, so that anyone seeking improvement in mental health can be treated with Spark Care+.

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge also named 14-year-old Samarth Mahapatra from Marietta, Ga. as the recipient of the Improving Lives Award, a special recognition award based on online public voting to choose the final project from the challenge that has the greatest potential to make a positive impact on the world. Inspired by his great aunt who had to give up cooking due to glaucoma-induced blindness, Samarth’s project, “Accessibility Friendly Guidance System for Optimal Cooking Operations based on Machine Learning,” deployed edge computing and advance vision algorithms to help people with vision impairments cook with ease.

Now in its fourteenth year, the 2021 3M Young Scientist Challenge hosted the two-day competition as a virtual event on Oct. 18 and 19, 2021. Sarah Park, an eighth-grader at Bolles School – Bartram in Jacksonville, Fla. at the time of entry, competed against nine other finalists. Each finalist was evaluated through a series of interactive, virtual challenges and the final presentation of their innovation. These ten young inventors, aged 12 to 14, won the top spots in this year’s challenge through their innovative thinking, scientific acumen, and exceptional communication skills.

Over the past few months, each 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalist worked with a 3M scientist who mentored and worked one-on-one with them to transform their idea from concept to physical prototype. Sarah Park was paired with Dr. Ann Fornof, a senior research specialist in the electrical markets division at 3M.

All ten 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists received a variety of prizes from 3M and Discovery Education. The grand prize winner received a $25,000 cash prize, the prestigious title of “America’s Top Young Scientist,” and a special destination trip. The second and third place winners each received a $1,000 prize and a special destination trip. These exceptional students at the time of entry are:

  • In second place, Samarth Mahapatra from Marietta, Ga., an eighth-grader at Dodgen Middle School in Cobb County High School Area 1. Samarth deployed edge computing and advance vision algorithms to help people with vision impairments cook with ease.
  • In third place, Snigtha Mohanraj from West Haven, Conn., an eighth-grader at Engineering and Science University Magnet School in New Haven Public School District. Snigtha invented Ferro-Sponge, a novel way to remove microplastics and oil from contaminated water.

The fourth through tenth place winners each receive a $1,000 prize and a $500 excitations gift card. These finalists at the time of entry, in alphabetical order by last name, are:

  • Abhinav Anne from Plainfield, Ill., a seventh-grader at Clifford Crone Middle School in Indian Prairie Community Unit School District 204.
  • Veda Murthy from Herndon, Va., a seventh-grader at Rachel Carson Middle School in Fairfax County Public School District.
  • Viraj Pandey from San Jose, Calif., a seventh-grader at Bret Harte Middle School in San Jose Unified School District.
  • Moitri Santra from Oviedo, Fla., a seventh-grader at Jackson Heights Middle School in Seminole County Public School District.
  • Danielle Steinbach from San Jose, Calif., a seventh-grader at Harker Middle School.
  • Aadrit Talukdar from San Jose, Calif., a seventh-grader at Basis Independent Silicon Valley.
  • Sydney Zhang from San Diego, Calif., an eighth-grader at Mesa Verde Middle School in Poway Unified School District.

“For 14 years, Discovery Education and 3M have partnered to help empower young people to bring STEM learning to life,” said Lori McFarling, president of social impact at Discovery Education. “Every single one of this year’s participants demonstrated the power of STEM to change the world and improve lives.”

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge inspires and challenges middle school students to think creatively and apply the power of STEM to discovering real-world solutions. America’s Top Young Scientists have gone on to give TED Talks, file patents, found nonprofits, make the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange, and exhibit at the White House Science Fair. These young innovators have also been named Time Magazine’s first Kid of the Year, featured in The New York Times Magazine, Forbes, Business Insider, and on national television programs such as Good Morning America, CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and more.

The award-winning 3M Young Scientist Challenge supplements the 3M and Discovery Education program – Young Scientist Lab – which provides no-cost dynamic digital resources for students, teachers, and families to explore, transform, and innovate the world around them. All the resources are also available through the Young Scientist Lab Channel and in the Social Impact Partnerships channel on Discovery Education’s recently enhanced K-12 learning platform.

USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education Award $10,000 to 2021 Stronger Than Hate Challenge Winners

Silver Spring, Md. (Monday, October 18, 2021) – USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education (USC Shoah Foundation), and Discovery Education today announced the winners of the 2021 Stronger Than Hate Challenge. The 2021 winners exemplify the power of youth voices to connect communities and the role of social-emotional learning in empowering students to overcome hate.

The Stronger Than Hate Challenge encourages students ages 13+ in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada to work individually or in groups of 2-4 to submit multimedia projects demonstrating the power of story to create a community that is stronger than hate.

The Stronger Than Hate Challenge builds upon the USC Shoah Foundation and Discovery Education no-cost and standards-aligned educational initiative, Teaching with Testimony, which inspires middle and high school students to create a better future by learning from the powerful testimony of survivors and witnesses of genocide.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has fueled rapid increases in racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism all over the world, making the Stronger Than Hate program more important and relevant than ever.  Students participating in this unique challenge produced remarkable content, despite many barriers and distance, exemplifying the power of storytelling to promote empathy, understanding, and respect. We are proud of every submission and left hopeful that students will enact real change in their communities as a result of this initiative,” said USC Shoah Foundation Head of Programs for Education, Lesly Culp.

The winners of the Stronger Than Hate Challenge demonstrated excellence in leveraging testimony and creativity to promote empathy, understanding, and respect in their local communities. The 2021 Stronger Than Hate Challenge winners are:

First Place
11th grader Madhalasa I. from Plano Senior High School of the Plano Independent School District located in Texas will receive a $6,000 scholarship for the video poem titled “Where Were You?” In addition, Madhalasa receives an exclusive learning experience from the team of storytellers at USC Shoah Foundation.

Inspired by the testimony of Holocaust survivor Tamara Bratinsky, Madhalasa created the multi-media poem emphasizing the importance of standing up for what’s right in order to stop history from repeating itself. As Madhalasa stated in the submission: “If we can all speak out against discrimination, our war on division is won and acts such as genocide and atrocities would only be present in the pages of history.”

Second Place
7th grader Ramaa P. from Avondale Alternative School in Canada’s Toronto District School Board will receive a $3,000 scholarship for their poem entitled “Stronger Than Hate.”

The written piece depicts a concerned person comforting a mother saddened by her children’s constant quarreling. The reader discovers the mother is Mother Earth distraught by how humans are treating each other and the planet, remarking “How long will you wait? It’s time for humans to grow stronger than hate.” Ramaa remarks that “In this poem I have given an outsider’s perspective on this issue, it underlines the petty and trivial nature of the origins of hatred. My poem encourages readers to reflect on how their actions can make a difference.”

Third Place
11th grader Aneesa T.  from Benjamin N. Cardozo High School of the New York City Geographic District #26 located in New York will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the poem and artwork titled “Face the Truth.”

Inspired by the testimony of Kizito Klima, a survivor of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, Aneesa created a poem and art piece intended to spark conversations for the transformation of society. Connecting the movement for racial equity in the United States, Aneesa states that “I wanted to point out in my poem that black lives do matter and the only way we can solve this problem is by loving each other and finding proper solutions.”

“We are proud to partner with USC Shoah Foundation to elevate student voices and promote understanding and diversity through these uniquely powerful social-emotional learning resources,” said Lori McFarling, President of Social Impact at Discovery Education. “Congratulations to each of the 2021 Stronger Than Hate Challenge winners and thank you for your inspirational work to make the world a more equitable place.”

Teaching with Testimony supports the integration of social-emotional learning—student understanding of their emotions, social skills, and how these influence decision-making and interpersonal relationships—into classroom learning through with dynamic and thoughtful content and inspiring educational supports.

The digital resources from Teaching with Testimony, including the Stronger Than Hate Challenge, support education online, at home, or wherever learning is taking place. Learn more about the Stronger Than Hate Challenge and the partnership at TeachingwithTestimony.com and in the Social Impact Partnerships channel on Discovery Education’s recently enhanced K-12 learning platform.

Latest Virtual Field Trip from Discovery Education Explores the History of Veterans Day and the Importance of Service

SILVER SPRING, MD (Thursday, October 14, 2021) — Discovery Education today announced the Voices of U.S., a Virtual Field Trip series in partnership with Discovery, Inc. that introduces students to the principles, people, and perspectives that shape our nation and inspires them to participate in civic life. The first installment – entitled Voices of U.S. – Why We Serve – will help teachers and students around the world learn about the importance of service through a celebration of Veterans Day. This series is built on the successful City of U.S. Virtual Field Trip, which took students on a virtual trip around Washington D.C. Created in partnership with Discovery Inc., the Voices of U.S. virtual experience premieres on Wednesday, November 10th at 1:00 PM ET at discoveryeducation.com/learn/voices-of-us.

Designed to engage upper elementary and middle school students in a variety of topics related to veterans and public service and support greater student agency, the Voices of U.S. – Why We Serve Virtual Field Trip:

  • Features notable U.S. military veterans and/or active-duty members who will share personal stories about their military experiences and explain why they chose to serve their country;
  • Highlights historic locations symbolizing and amplifying service, honor, and duty;
  • Inspires students to consider ways they can also act and serve their communities.

Voices of U.S. – Why We Serve begins by introducing viewers to the student hosts who are guiding this important virtual event. Through four engaging segments, students will hear from U.S. veterans about their service while learning more about Veterans Day, as well as distinguished national leaders, including:

  • Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA)
  • Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ-11)
  • Neal McIntyre, Deputy Superintendent at Arlington National Cemetery

Extraordinary students served by Operation Homefront, the national nonprofit whose mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families, will also ask Rep. Sherrill about her service and its importance to the nation. Additional details on this exciting event can be found here.

“As a company commander who served over 23 years in our nation’s uniform, and as the mother of a West Point cadet, I was proud to take part in the Voices of U.S. – Why We Serve Virtual Field Trip to share the value of service I was taught in the military with our next generation of leaders,” said Senator Joni Ernst, the first female combat veteran elected to the U.S. Senate. “Just like the brave men and women who answer the call to protect our country, I encourage students across Iowa and America to follow in the footsteps of these heroes by living a life of service to their families, communities, state, and country.”

“I could not be more proud to share my experiences as a veteran and in public service with so many students through Discovery Education’s virtual field trip series,” said Rep. Sherrill. “The opportunities I’ve had to serve have been a privilege, and it is incredible to see so many young people interested in public service. Thank you to Discovery Education and Discovery, Inc. for bringing together all of the presenters for this project, and for honoring Veterans Day in such a fitting way for Discovery’s student audience.”

The Voices of U.S. – Why We Serve is accompanied by a helpful instructional resource for students in grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 created by Discovery Education’s expert Curriculum Team, which are available on the event homepage. In addition, the segmented production of the Virtual Field Trip empowers teachers to either view the entire program with their classrooms as a single live event or use selected segments for specific lessons. The special will also air exclusively on Discovery Family and in Spanish on Discovery Familia.

The Voices of U.S. Virtual Field Trip series builds upon the successful City of U.S. Virtual Field Trip, which featured First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. The City of U.S. helps all students experience the history and beauty of Washington D.C. through a tour of the federal city’s many historic landmarks.

The Voices of U.S. – Why We Serve is the latest Virtual Field Trip produced by Discovery Education the worldwide edtech leader whose state-of-the-art digital platform supports learning wherever it takes place. Previous Discovery Education Virtual Field Trips can be found here or in the Virtual Field Trips Channel within the company’s recently updated K-12 learning platform connecting educators to a vast collection of compelling high-quality, standards-aligned content, ready-to-use digital lessons, and professional learning resources.

“Veterans have helped make this nation what it is today, and students can learn so much about service, honor, and history from their stories,” said Scott Kinney, Chief Executive Officer of Discovery Education. “We are thankful to be teaming up with Discovery, Inc. to bring this powerful Virtual Field Trip to classrooms nationwide and are grateful to the guest presenters for taking the time to share their experiences and perspectives with students.

“Discovery, Inc. is a mission-driven company with a long history of using its brand reach for positive change and impact.
