Show Students the Power of the Periodic Table

On February 7, celebrate National Periodic Table Day with new interactive content and ready-to-use resources for every grade level.

The periodic table was one of the most important scientific breakthroughs in history! For the first time ever, scientists had a way to easily access a massive amount of information about the elements and all the ways they relate to one another with just one, easy-to-use reference tool.

Today, students and modern scientists can use the table to:

  • Identify trends and elements that share similar characteristics.
  • Predict the properties of elements, even those that have not been discovered!
  • Balance chemical equations and better understand the laws behind chemical reactions.

Whether you’re introducing its importance or celebrating its national holiday—or simply looking for a way to get students to use it—we have a wealth of resources to help promote the power of the periodic table.

NEW! The Interactive Periodic Table

Science Tool  |  Grades 6-8, 9-12
Newly released in 2020, this interactive science tool from Discovery Education and Blue Coral Learning lets students swipe and tap their way across the periodic table for quick stats on each element. Students can also search the table by name or symbol, click into each element for its “full stats,” and even recolor the table with patterns based off of properties like boiling point, melting point, and atomic radius.

The Periodic Table Channel

Available through Science Techbook and Experience
Investigate the periodic table using this comprehensive collection of high-quality content and vetted instructional resources, curated by Discovery Education curriculum experts and differentiated by grade level. Choose from a wide variety of content types, including videos, images, audio, text, and more.

Is It Sugar, or Is It Salt?
Audio/Song [2:00]  |  Grades K-2, 3-5
Use this playful song that touches on the periodic table and how different elements can be joined together to make different compounds that may look alike but are chemically very different, like salt and sugar!
