About This Lesson

Inquiry-Based Activator Kicks Off Learning Stations


In pairs, students use a magnifying glass to look at different rocks, then record and share their observations about shape, size, and texture. The teacher asks students to begin thinking about what may have caused the rocks to look and feel the way they do.

Students Focus on Essential Questions


The essential questions are drawn from the model lesson in Science Techbook and displayed on the chalkboard wall. Students focus on these questions during the work they do at every station.

Station Highlights

Station 1: Interacting with Digital Explorations


At the smart board, students interact with two digital explorations: Erosion and Deposition and The Ever-Changing River. They manipulate variables and collect and analyze data.

Station 2: Building Academic Vocabulary


Science Techbook’s interactive glossary provides definitions in multi-language text, animation, video, and images. Using a Frayer Model graphic organizer, students develop an understanding of key academic vocabulary.

Station 3: Simulating Waves


Students simulate the action of waves and the effect on the sand of the shore. They record their observations in science journals and take pictures with their phones to use on their scientific explanation digital board. There are more than 400 hands-on activities and labs across Science Techbook middle school courses.

Station 4: : Deepening Literacy Skills


The interactive text in Science Techbook supports Universal Design for Learning. Students can access different lexile levels, highlight text, take notes, toggle between different languages, and have text read aloud. They use an inquiry chart to synthesize information.

Station 5: Creating a River


In another hands-on activity, students are given materials to create their own river. Working together, they hypothesize, generate their own questions, and test what happens. Students are doing the work of real scientists – collaborating, communicating, being creative, and thinking critically.

Station 6: Weathering Rocks


There’s a lot of energy at this station as students physically and noisily (in a productive, good way) weather rocks, setting up tests in different ways and under different conditions.

Assessing Understanding


Techbook provides a rich variety of ways to measure progress and assess understanding. These students write in their journals, use graphic organizers, and develop brief constructed responses. The teacher also did quick checks for understanding like “Three Truths and Lie,” part of Discovery Education’s Spotlight on Strategies series.
