Science Techbook ™ implementation goes well beyond core instructional materials. We provide customized, research-based professional development to support inquiry-based learning. Our professional development provides support on implementing Techbook relative to TEKS, advancing literacy through the content area, and developing a collaborative, student-centric environment.



Overall, we believe rich digital content, inquiry-based instructional strategies and powerful, simply-to-use technology must be intentionally linked to elevate student engagement and achievement.

How does the Discovery Education Science Techbook increase student engagement?

Science Techbook leverages high quality content from educationally relevant programs from Discovery Channel, Science Channel and other Discovery Communications television networks and more than 100 publishing partners to engage our 21st century learners. This content is then organized by the 5E Instructional Model to engage students in inquiry-based science, stimulate multi-modal learning, and create relevant and experiential classroom environments. Several examples of this engaging, standards-based content includes Virtual Labs, Hands-On Labs, Digital Interactives, Hands-On Activities, and Virtual Simulations.

How does the Discovery Education Science Techbook facilitate personalized learning?

Students using Science Techbook engage multiple modes of learning within every concept, including visual, auditory, kinesthetic, reading, and writing. Students can personalize their interaction with the core text by highlighting and note-taking, both of which are then saved to their unique login for future reference and review.

Teachers can assign Science Techbook learning activities to entire classes, groups of students, and/or to individual students based on unique needs and learning styles. The Student Center landing page provides a customized appearance and a list of assignments (both current and completed), as well as the ability to access the entire Science Techbook library of content to extend their learning, research areas of interest, and satisfy their scientific curiosity. In addition, students can download content and begin ‘creating’ new knowledge and work as evidence of their learning progress. Individual student logins allow student and parents 24/7 access to Science Techbook on virtually any device with Internet access.

How does the Discovery Education Science Techbook support comprehensive literacy through science?

Discovery Education’s fundamental philosophy in the development of Science Techbook was to ensure that no student was denied access to science content due to his or her reading abilities. The Techbook ™ service provides multiple genres of reading passages at various Lexile levels. Along with reading passages, each concept contains Core Interactive Text to provide foundational information about the concept. Core Interactive Text for grades high school science includes key reading sections (Engage and Explore tabs) at two levels: at grade and two levels below grade (7/8th grade level). For additional reader support a text-to-speech feature for nearly all materials is available. Additionally, lesson plans contain teaching strategies to help facilitate opportunities for students to investigate, collect data, write statements that support their evidence, and discuss their findings as they work through each concept. Science Techbook™ provides extensive multimedia resources to activate prior knowledge and build academic vocabulary to prepare students for successful reading. The Interactive Glossary includes animations, videos, images, and definitions for over 800 terms.

How does the Discovery Education Science Techbook support special education, gifted and talented, and English-language learners?

Every concept in the Science Techbook ™ service provides resources to engage multiple learning styles at varying levels of rigor. Periodic checks for understanding occur throughout the 5E instructional pathway with additional resources provided and highlighted for remediation and enrichment opportunities. Model Lessons also include extension ideas for project-based learning. All core text and glossary terms are available in Spanish as well.

How does the Discovery Education Science Techbook use data to drive instruction?

The “check for understanding” assessments for each concept provide data reports to inform instruction. For each question a student answers incorrectly, Science Techbook recommends a variety of additional instructional resources for the student to learn the concept and skill. Data from the formative assessments can be analyzed by class, student, or sub-group of students in order to better understand where/what remediation is needed to ensure mastery of each concept.

Is the Discovery Education Science Techbook continuously updated with new content and TEKS alignment?

Yes. Discovery Education believes that in order to truly engage our students and provide relevant and experiential learning environment, it is essential to have instructional materials that are up-to-date with current events and content that reflects the world in which our students live. Below are several examples of ways Science Techbook will be updated throughout the full 8-year adoption cycle:  
  • Changes in scientific information/knowledge and new finding will be continuously updated.  For example when Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet, Discovery Education revised this information in Science Techbook and provided learning resources for students to understand why the change occurred.
  • When standards in Texas change in 2016, Discovery Education will revise Science Techbook content alignment to meet the new TEKS so educators have relevant resources to meet the new standards.
  • Discovery Education continually upgrades the user experience based on educator feedback to enhance the student learning experience.
